DALLAS – Carr Pro Rodeo’s MGM Deuces Night, the 8-year-old mare who was honored as the 2012 PRCABareback Horse of the Year, died Feb. 23 after suffering anepisode of colic at the Elgin (Texas) Veterinary Hospital.
It occurred several days after MGM Deuces Nightunderwent a minor procedure on an injured coffin bone inher right hoof.
“Dr. (Marty) Tanner said the procedure went well andthat she was doing well, and he was going to send herhome Monday (Feb. 25),” owner Pete Carr said. “We’ve lostsome great horses over the years, but this one stings quitea bit.
“She had been so brilliant so early in her career. She wasa foundation mare, and we were going to breed her for alot of years. ”
MGM Deuces Night was born on the Zinser Ranch inClaire, Mich., and then purchased by bareback rider WesStevenson, an eight-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeoqualifier. He later sold the horse to Carr, who first took theanimal to the NFR in 2010. She returned to ProRodeo’sfinale in 2011 and 2012.
“I knew she was that good, so part of the reason I soldher to Pete is that I knew she’d have a good shot to go tothe Finals,” Stevenson said. “I bought her from Jim Zinseras a broodmare, but she bucked so good, I didn’t want towaste her sitting at my house. I wanted her to have achance.”
In the six times she performed in Las Vegas, she guidedcowboys to three go-round titles: Kelly Timberman (88points in the 10th round, 2010), Ryan Gray (90 points inthe fifth round, 2011) and Kaycee Feild (87 points in the10th round, 2011).
Feild, the two-time and reigning bareback riding worldchampion from Spanish Fork, Utah, says he earned about$100,000 on MGM Deuces Night. Feild rode the horse for
90 points at the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo inApril 2011.
In her short lifetime, the mare led cowboys to a lot of bigpaydays. In her first trip during a PRCA rodeo, she guid-ed five-time NFR qualifier Chris Harris to an 88-pointride to win the West of the Pecos (Texas) Rodeo in 2010 –the two had a rematch in Pecos in 2011, with Harris win-ning the title again after an 87. Chase Erickson won the2011 All American Series Finals title with an 88 on MGMDeuces Night.

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Tuf Cooper is good with num-bers. From memory, he can tell you how much he won atthe first rodeo on his PRCA permit ($743.37, Hattiesburg,Miss.), how much he won in his first PRCA rodeo as a cardholder ($1,023, Huntsville, Texas) and how much he gotfor his first rodeo win ($5,371.03, Logandale, Nev.). Nowhe’s got a new milestone to commit to memory. And it's abig one.
On Feb. 22, 2013, Cooper became the youngest cowboy toreach $1 million in career earnings, surpassing that mile-stone at the San Angelo Rodeo just 22 days after his 23rdbirthday. It broke the 20-year-old record of 23 years, 9months set by ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductee Ty Murrayduring the Fourth of July run in 1993.
“That is a very cool thing to be in the same category withTy Murray at least once in my career, considering all thathe has accomplished in the sport,” Cooper said. “It’s amaz-ing. It means a lot to me. I can still remember when I wasabout 9 years old and it was between him and my dad(Hall of Famer Roy Cooper) for who was going to becomethe first $2 million cowboy (it was Roy).”
Cooper surpassed the $1 million milestone by winningthe third round of the tie-down roping in San Angelo, worth $2,981, and, ironically, the first check he has everwon at this rodeo.
With checks for finishing second to Justin Maass in theFeb. 23 final and third in the average behind Maass (34.2seconds on four head) and Scott Kormos, Cooper departedSan Angelo with his career total at 1,008,168.
Cooper actually had his winning run of 7.4 seconds theprevious Sunday, allowing for a bit of nearly perfect sym-metry. Cooper’s first check – that one in Hattiesburg, backin 2008 – came 16 days after his 18th birthday and thisrecord-producing run came 17 days after his 23rd.
“I did the math a couple of years ago,” Cooper said, “andfigured out that I had a chance to break Ty’s record in thewinter of 2013 if I kept doing the job. I turned out to bepretty much on the money. I guess I stayed the course allright.”
Breaking the record in his home state of Texas makesthe accomplishment even more special. Cooper, his dad,and brothers, Clint and Clif have been coming to SanAngelo for years, both for the PRCA-sanctioned rodeo andthe Roping Fiesta.
There is a lot of family history in this arena, but nonebigger than what Cooper managed here this year.
“To become the youngest cowboy millionaire and just doit in one event is pretty impressive,” Murray said. “I did it
i n
three events (bull riding, saddle bronc riding and bare-back riding), so I had three times the opportunity. Imagineif everywhere Tuf went he had three shots at it in the tie-down roping.
“When I was a kid, Roy Cooper was literally one of theguys who changed the game. He was the biggest star atthe NFR. Tuf ’s one of the young guys who will further rev-olutionize the sport, and I’m proud to see young cowboyscoming up and breaking records. I wish a money recordwould never stand for 20 years, but having young starslike Tuf Cooper come along is what helps the sport grow.”
In addition to Maass, the other champions at this$462,792 rodeo were bareback rider Kaycee Feild (175points on two head), steer wrestler Trevor Knowles (16.1seconds on tour head), team ropers Chace Thompson andChad Williams (20.3 seconds on four head), saddle broncrider Jesse Bail (162 points on two head), steer roper ScottSnedecor (34.6 seconds on three head), bull riders CodyTeel and Trevor Kastner (88 points each) and barrel racerMary Walker (43.63 seconds on three runs).

Cooper Becomes Youngest Rodeo Millionaire
Two-time and reigning World Champion Tuf Cooperbecame the sport's youngest-ever millionaire with this 7.4-second run in the third round of the San Angelo (Texas)Rodeo. Cooper broke the record set by Ty Murray in July1993 when he was 23 years, 9 months old; Cooper turned23 on Jan. 31.
