inspiredteachingFrom its earliest years, Roedean has been renowned for its reputation in maths and science. Small classes, a hands-on approach to science and enthusiastic teachers ensure Roedeanians achieve consistentlyoutstanding grades.

In maths, we stretch our most able sixth form girls at the University of Sussex’s first year geometry lectures. In the sciences, girls manufacture nylon, design windturbines and identify local wildlife.

As a result of inspired teaching and exceptional resources,a high proportion of our girls progress each year to world-class institutions such as the Universities of Oxford andCambridge, Imperial College (London) or UniversityCollege (London).

The five boarding houses provide warm, comfortableaccommodation with stunning sea views. The Houses aredivided into main and senior wings, so that friendshipgroups are never too big and it is easy for the day girls tofeel involved.

Step into any of the Houses: you will find an affectionatecamaraderie between the girls and an air of respectfulinformality towards the House staff.

recognisingindividual tyBetween studying and pursuing outside interests, life at Roedean can be an intense, exciting experience. The wellbeing of our girls is the highest priority and our pastoral care is highly praised.

Teachers offer subject clinics and individual support forstudents needing a little extra help; pastoral staff create a warm, homely atmosphere in the Houses.

Together, their close knowledge of each individual girl’scharacter means they can quickly tell if anything is amissand either contact parents, or guardians, or refer to ourmedical or counselling staff on site.

outward boundClassrooms are just one element of life at Roedean. The School’s founders were strong believers in the valueof fresh air for healthy, strong girls - even taking them sea-swimming between the Brighton piers.

Nowadays, our students can work towards their Duke ofEdinburgh’s Award Scheme with expeditions to the PeakDistrict or the south of France, or learn to sail, or playpolo. Alternatively, they might prefer to participate incommunity volunteering in Brighton.

Roedean actors, dancers and musicians regularly achievemerits and distinctions in the advanced grades of externalexamination boards including LAMDA, Royal Academy of Dance, and Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

esprit de corpsSport has always been an important element of life atRoedean; there are records of school cricket matchesdating as far back as 1899.

Beyond developing physical fitness and a healthy glow, the girls learn transferable team skills and demonstratetheir commitment to the Roedean values of fairness and honesty. Our girls are encouraged to play at school,county and national level, or just for fun.

As well as playing all the standard school sports, Roedean also offers horse riding, scuba diving and cricket.Sports tours to Australia and the Caribbean have alsotaken place.

Roedean is the only school in the UK to be sited within a National Park, and on a coastline and within city boundaries. This location gives our girls uniqueopportunities as they start to venture beyond the 45 acre campus.

Stylish Brighton, with its Regency heritage and renownedcultural attractions, is an easy city in which to find yourfeet. As the girls progress through the School they aregradually trusted with more freedom - permission first tovisit the marina, then Brighton - ultimately leading to asmooth transition to their chosen university.

creatingopportunitiesIt is important to us that there are no limits to the careeraspirations of our students. Our alumni include humanrights campaigners and lawyers, journalists andpoliticians, record breaking sportswomen and at least onebeauty queen!

Throughout the School’s history, creative girls have beeninspired by a broad art curriculum, gallery visits, nationalcompetitions and collaborations with local artists.

Many have gone on to work as professional fashion,interior and graphic designers. Two examples are PhyllisPearsall (creator of the first London A-Z map in 1936) and Beatrix Ong (luxury accessories designer).
