Values are Important

Superstitions can creep under our skins and we don't realise when they disrupt our power to think logically. For example,

superstitiously, number 13 is unlucky. In fact, the list of superstitions is endless and changes from region to region, country to country and family to family. People all around the world are superstitious and, hence, they make their lives miserable. We have 'good and bad omens' that are so powerful that they rule our life. However, there are people who love God, understand the basic tenets of religion but believe in hard work, perseverance and have a high self-esteem. They don't recognise failure and if they fail, they work harder to achieve their goals. What is the secret of their success? Is it a mantra or a good omen that protects them from evil to pave the way for a good life? Just try it. Keep aside your old records, work hard on your weaknesses and focus on your strong points, and you will nd yourself on the road to success. It is important to be focussed in the direction of hard work to increase ability and strengthen skills. Just think that if a palmist has the knowledge to talk about our destiny, why couldn't he change his own? Superstitions are beliefs that come down to us from earlier generations. There is nothing 'touch wood' about anything in life. Good remains good till the time you think well. My friend Rudr recalls, “It became a habit of mine to see how my slippers would end up once I removed them. If they faced opposite directions, it meant I was about to go places. But it never happened. Over a period of time, I got over it.” Superstitions bring in negative beliefs. If we don't overcome our belief in them, we tend to become weak-willed in life. We expect bad and end up

On April 26, a massive tree plantation drive was carried out in the Leh region of Jammu and

Kashmir. The aim is to battle climate change with one of the methods which really works— growing more trees. The drive was a part of the 'Go Green, Go Organic' initiative which seeks to plant 15 million saplings all over the Ladakh region. The idea behind the drive was 20% reduction in the carbon footprint of the state and mitigation of negative human impact on the environment. During the drive, around 4,000 Willow and Umbu saplings were planted and participation for this was in the hundreds with volunteers and Buddhist monks joining hands under the chairmanship of the Ladakh Environment and Health Organisation (LEHO). Earlier in March, a state-wide drive was launched to save Chinar trees, often seen as the heritage of Jammu and Kashmir.

On April 6, Britain's sugar tax on soft drinks came into effect, a move that will lead to some

higher prices as the country seeks to battle childhood obesity. The tax, announced in March 2016, has already cut sugar content in drinks by 45 million kg per year, Britain's Treasury said, as over 50 percent of manufacturers have reformulated their products to be below the levy's sugar threshold. “Our teenagers consume nearly a bathtub of sugary drinks each year on average, fuelling a worrying obesity trend in this country,” Public Health Minister Steve Brine said. “The soft drinks industry levy is ground-breaking policy that will help to reduce sugar intake, whilst funding sports programs and nutritious breakfast clubs for children.” Soft drink makers including Coca-Cola, Britvic and Lucozade Ribena Suntory have reformulated drinks, though Coca-Cola Classic, the nation's top-selling branded soft drink, is subject to the tax.

The clouds of Venus may possibly host alien life, say scientists who suggest that microbes

may have evolved on the planet. Some models suggest Venus once had a habitable climate with liquid water on its surface for as long as two billion years. "That's much longer than is believed to have occurred on Mars," said Sanjay Limaye of the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the US. On Earth, terrestrial microorganisms —mostly bacteria are capable of being swept into the atmosphere, where they have been found alive at altitudes as high as 41 kilometres by scientists using specially equipped balloons, according to David J Smith of NASA's Ames Research Center. There is also a growing catalogue of microbes known to inhabit incredibly harsh environments on our planet, including the hot springs of Yellowstone, deep ocean hydrothermal vents, the toxic sludge of polluted areas, and in acidic lakes worldwide.

On the occasion of Earth Day on April 22, leaders across India and the world voiced solidarity over

protection and preservation of the planet, with emphasis on reduction of plastic use and adopting a sustainable lifestyle. People around the globe also came together to celebrate the Earth Day. First celebrated in the United States in 1970, the idea of commemorating such a day was propounded by Gaylord Nelson, a US senator from Wisconsin. Nelson, who had been a witness to the devastation caused by an enormous oil spill in Santa Barbara, California in 1969, felt the urgency of the matter. According to Earth Day Network, this year's Earth Day was dedicated to spreading awareness about the pollution caused by plastic and the need to eventually end its use. The Earth Day went global by the 1990s and is now celebrated by at least 192 countries.

As parents we all want our children to succeed in life and become good human beings. And we want to give them the best we can, in

order to help them in their growth and overall development. But usually we are not sure and not aware of how we can contribute in their overall development. Before we go further, it is important for us to understand the importance of early years in our children's life. This is the time when their potential level is at peak. They are much curious about things and full of energy. Thus, they are ready to understand, learn and grasp new things happening around them. Consequently, the best time when we can contribute in their development is their early childhood period because their development during those early years will set the foundation for lifelong learning, behaviour and health. As parents, we must allow our children to be more independent. They can only be so, if we give them some breathing space. They must learn to fall and pick themselves up. But we also cannot avoid the fact that they are our next generation and the generation next is always superior than the previous one, Thus, they have the capability to learn and understand the things in fast mode. Just as children must be taught to tie their shoes, read and write, solve maths problems and understand science concepts and events in history. So must they be guided in developing the qualities of character that are valued by their families and the communities in which they live. It is only through guidance and modelling by caring adults that children learn to be honest and thoughtful, to stand up for their principles, to care about others, to get responsibly and to make sound moral choices. The most important thing we can do for our children is to help them acquire values and skills that they can rely on throughout their lives. In doing so, they will have the best chance to lead good lives as individuals and as citizens of their communities and of India.
