Capoiera for KidsAges: 5-12 4 week sessions Amazonas Community Center Meeting Room #3

Capoiera is both a martial art and a dance, where each individual adds their own personality. Unlike most martial arts, capoeira is rooted in African rituals, which includes astrong music component that connects the players in a shared rhythm. Through exploringphysical movements, music and cooperative play, students will increase self-confidence andself-expression. We will go upside-down, sideways and backwards, do handstands, kicksand dodges, dance, sing, clap and play percussion instruments. We will learn Portuguesewords and phrases through ritual songs of Capoiera.

Capoiera is a language of the body that allows you to be alive and present with your spirit. It is a dance of respect, humility, playfulness and vulnerability.

Amazonas has been playing Capoiera since 2001. She has a background in Contact-Improvisation and Authentic Movement. She has been teaching Capoiera since2006 to both children and adults. Her classes emphasize cooperative play and allow eachindividual to grow and develop at one’s own pace.
