“ReturnonInvestment(ROI)”ismostoftenconnectedtothebusinessworld,andevenwhenassociatedwithnonprofits,thefocusisongettingthemostforthemoneyyouinvestedorcontributed.However,ROIinour2011CraigFoundationAnnualReportreferstothereturnofindependenceforCraigpatients.CraigHospitalisrecognizedinternationallyforthesuperioroutcomesourpatientshaveintheareasoffunctionalindependence,aswellasthepercentageofpatientsreturningtohome,toworkandtoschool.

Asyoureadaboutthemanysuccessstoriesofourpatientsandgraduates,youshouldfeelasenseofaccomplishmentknowingthatyouhelpedsupporttheirefforts.Manyofourprogramswouldnotbeinexistencebutforthesupportofourdonors.TherapeuticRecreation,ourNurseAdviceLine,ourresearchcollaborationsandourassistanceprovidedtopatientstopurchaseequipmentormodifytheirhomesareallpossiblethroughthegenerosityofthoseindividuals,families,corporations,organizationsandfoundationswhohavedonatedin2011.

ThishasbeenabanneryearforCraigwithseveralmilestoneevents:theopeningofthePEAKfitnesscenter,a10-weekinvestigationalstudyoftheEksoSkeleton,andalegislativebillsignedintolawallowingtheCraigHospitallicenseplate.ThePEAKfitnesscenterisdesignedexclusivelyforthosewithvaryingdegreesofdisability.AptlynamedforPerformance,Exercise,AttitudeandKnowledge,thecenteroptimizesrecoveryandpreventssecondarycomplicationsassociatedwithimmobility.Featuresincludestate-of-the-artequipment,one-on-onepersonaltraining,pooltherapy,functionalelectricalstimulation(FES)bikeclassesandadaptiveyoga.

WealsohostedapressconferencewithEksoBionicstointroduceanewexoskeletonproductnowavailableforuseinthePEAKcenter.Thisroboticdeviceisstrappedovertheuser’sclothes.Itbringsapersontoastandingposition,supportingthebody.Itthenmovesthelegsforthepatientallowinghimorherto“walk.”Thislowerbodyexoskeletonhasbeenprovensafe,butmoreimportantlyithasshowntobeaneffectivemeansofgettingpatientswithparalysisupandmoving,thereforeenhancinglongtermphysicalandpsychologicalbenefits.

Craigisalsothefirstandonlyhospitalinthenationtohaveitsownlicenseplate.Aportionofsalesbenefitsourpatientassistanceprogram.

Wecontinuealongouraward-winningtrend.Wewereprivilegedthisyeartoberankedforthe22ndconsecutivetimeasaTopTenRehabilitationCenterbyUSNewsandWorldReport,andrecentlyreceivedtheprestigiousElPomarSpencerandJuliePenroseAwardfortheOutstandingNonprofitinthestateofColorado.WeonceagainachievedMagnet®statusfornursingexcellenceandwereawardedtheNDNQI®designationfornursingquality.

WhenImetDr.Charles(Charlie)Hamlin,Iwasimmediatelyinspiredbyhiswarmandcontagiousspiritofenthusiasm.Weenjoyedclubsandwichesandlemonadethathegraciouslybroughttoourmeeting.“Thesecrettothissandwich,”heconfessedwithawink,“istheextrabaconandextramayo.”Heisacompellingstoryteller.Irealizedattheendoftheinterview,thatIhadbecomesocaughtupinthetaleofhislifethatI’dneglectedtowriteanythingdown.Dr.HamlinisafoundingmemberofHandSurgeryAssociatesinDenver—hepracticedthereforalmostfourdecadesbeforeheretiredfromthepractice.ThishumblemanholdsdegreesfromYaleUniversity,DartmouthMedicalSchoolandanMDfromColumbiaUniversityCollegeofPhysicians&Surgeons.HeisafellowintheAmericanAcademyofOrthopaedicSurgeonsandreceivedtheirHumanitarianAwardin2001.HealsoreceivedtheVolunteerServiceAwardfromtheAmericanSocietyforSurgeryoftheHandin2007.

Inthe1970s,Dr.HamlinbeganahandclinicatCraigHospitalforreconstructionoftheupperextremityinthequadriplegicpatient.“Thetangiblerewardsareseeingthesepeopletakingcareofthemselvesandtheirfamiliesandgettingbacktowork.”Dr.Hamlinhasmadeameasurabledifferenceinmanylivesofpatientswithquadriplegia.Oneofhissurgicallovesisthe“art”oftendontransfers.“Whereasweallhaveoverfiftyworkingmusclesbelowtheelbow,thespinalcordpatientmayhaveonlyfourtosix.Selectivelyredistributingtheseassetscanrestorefunctionwherenonehasbeenpresent,providingpinchandgraspandrelease.”Thiscanmakeamajordifferenceineverydayactivities,suchascuttingfood,openingcansorbottles,holdingapen,holdingacellphone,dealingwithbuttonsorzippersorturningadoorknob.

Dr.Hamlincreditsseveralworld-renownedmentorsandteacherswhocontributedtohissuccess,butitwasalsosomeserendipitousoccasionsthatdefinedthepathofhislife.“ThemostcourageousdecisionImadewasa‘cold’calltoCraigHospital,offeringtobeginahandprogramthere,thisfollowingthecareofapatientIsharedwithDr.MarkCilo,whohadrecentlyjoinedthestaff.IquicklylearnedoftheteamapproachatCraig,whichtakesonincrediblechallengeswithgraceandintegrity—tomymind,theyarethebestintheworldatwhattheydo.”

HevolunteeredhisservicesinoutreachclinicsthatCraigheldonIndianreservationsinNewMexicoandArizona,andsoonrealizedtheneedforhandcareontheNavajoReservation.

CHARLESHAMLIN,MDGivingBackIndependenceOneSurgeryataTime

ForseveralmonthshewasmetonlywithskepticismfromReservationrepresentativeswhenhepitchedtheidea,untilPetersonZah,thePresidentoftheNavajoNationatthetime,heardaboutDr.Hamlin’sproposalandarrangedaprivateaudience.Theclinicopenedfourmonthslater.Dr.Hamlindonatedhisowninstruments,encouragedorthopediccompaniestodonatesupplies,andralliedhiscolleaguestoparticipateinthisclinic,whichhasbeenoperatingessentiallymonthlysince1994.“Seeingpatientsgetbetter,manyformerlyuntreated,isgratifying,andinthisbeautifulsettingontherimoftheCanyondeChelly,sacredgroundtotheNavajopeople,nearthecommunityofChinle,Arizona—howcanyounotbeinspired?”

AsDr.Hamlinlikestosay:“MylifeisalotlikethequoteIparaphrasefromJosephCampbell’sThePowerOfMyth,‘Ifyou’redoingtherightthing,doorswillopenforyou.’”

Dr. Hamlin recently made a donation to the Occupational Therapists Education program at Craig, “to mark every year of the 30 years I’ve been involved with Craig. With everything I’ve done, I got more than I gave.”

Because of the funds Dr. Hamlin has provided for continuing professional education and development of the Craig Hospital Occupational Therapy staff and community clinicians, a two-day course was offered at Craig entitled: “Functional Electrical Stimulation and Contemporary Approaches in Neurological Rehabilitation: Coupling Therapies.” Thirty attendees were able to participate and gain knowledge and expertise because of Dr. Hamlin’s generosity.

Doug Frydenlund –The Cutting Edge IndependentDougFrydenlundwasfour-wheelingnearthefamilysummerhomeinremoteNorthernMinnesotawhenabranchfromafallentreepuncturedhisradiator.Hearrangedforatowtruck,calledforarentalcar,andhoppedonhisbrother’smotorcyclewithafriendtogopickitup.Onanotherwiseclearandopenroad,asimplesquareofloosegravelalteredhispath.

“Onenanosecondchangedmywholeexistence.Noone—noone—noone,canbepreparedbyanystretchoftheimaginationtobefacedwiththeobstaclesandcostsassociatedwithacatastrophicspinalcordinjury,”remarksDoug.

WhenyouarriveatCraig,youdon’trealizethatwhileyou’relearningaboutthisnewnormalandlearninghowtofunctioninthisuniverse,thestaffatCraigisquietlylearningaboutyou—whatmakesyoutick,whatyouweredoing,howyouwereliving.Whenthetimeisright,you’representedwithoptions,whichopenlimitlesspossibilities.

WhenJillBaldessari,assistivetechnologyspecialistatCraig,offeredtoshowDougsometechnologyoptionsforhisnewlifeasaquadriplegic,headmitshewasskeptical.Heandhispartnersinacommercialwall-coveringcompanypridethemselvesontheuseofcuttingedgetechnologytostayaheadofthecompetitors.

Fordecades,aninformalnetworkofCraighealthcareprovidersandCraiggraduatesexistedinthesecriticalmoments.Craiggraduateswouldcallsomeonetheyknewhopingthestaffmemberwouldhaveafewmomentstochat.

Now,initsfourthyear,theSpinalCordInjuryNurseAdviceLinereplacesthatheartfelt,butscatteredresponse.Itprovidesfreein-depthmedicalandwellnessadvicetoCraiggraduatesandotherswithspinalcordinjuriesallovertheUnitedStates.Peoplewithspinalcordinjuriesmanagetheirconditionthroughouttheirlives,andthingscanchangedramaticallyfromday-to-day,year-to-year.Akeypieceofmedicaladvicecankeepasmallhealthissuefrombecomingamedicalemergency.

Establishedin2008,theAdviceLinehashelpedover5,600people,anddemandcontinuestosoar.Thestaffincludesthreeregisterednurseswhoarelicensedinall50states.Thisinnovativeprojectisnurse-led,nurse-managedandservesabroadbaseofconsumersandprofessionals.

ThePEAKCenter—aptlynamedforPerformance,Exercise,Attitude,andKnowledge—wascreatedforindividualswithneurologicdisabilitieswhoareseekingtooptimizetheirrecoveryandpreventthesecondarycomplicationsassociatedwithimmobility.State-of-the-artservicesandcustomizedtreatmentplansareprovidedtoclientsinahighlymotivatingenvironmentaftertraditionalrehabilitationserviceshavebeencompleted.Tomaximizeaccess,thePEAKCenterprovidesthreelevelsofservice,cateringtoawidevarietyofindividualphysicalneeds,economicsituationsandcommitmentlevels.Individualswithneurologicdisabilitieshavetheopportunitytoparticipateinthefollowingthreeprograms:

Presented by the Colorado Special Education Advisory Committee, the “People First” philosophy means the individual goes above and beyond to make a difference in another person’s life. Laura sees the person first and the disability last. As one of the first award recipients, Laura shares her positive energy and dedication with Craig graduates across the country.

However,forschool-agepatients,educationtakesonamoresignificantrole.Manyyoungerpatientsfindtheirformaleducationjourneyturnedupsidedown.Injuriesinterruptschoolyearcalendarsleavingpatientswonderingwhen,andhow,theywillevergettoweartheircapandgown.

TheCraigHospitalSchoolProgramhelpsschool-agepatientscontinuecurrentacademicrequirementsorremedialworkduringtheirrehab.Ontopofdifferenttherapies,medicalappointmentsandotherrehabactivities,thesestudentsstudysubjectsfromEnglishliteraturetogeometryandalgebra.Tapingchartswheretheycanbeseenandstudied,dictatingthoughtsandphrasesforessays,doingmaththroughdictation,andearningPEcreditsforattendingmultiplehoursofphysicaltherapy,allbecomepartofastudent’spersonalizedacademiccurriculumandnewlystructuredstudyhabits.Studentswanttoreturntotheirhometownschoolsandgraduatewiththeirclassandgoodfriendsifpossible.

Craig’sSchoolProgramisaccreditedasanAlternativeSchoolinColorado,receivesregularvisitsfromstatepersonnel,andcontractswithastatespecialeducationdirectorwhooverseesthiscriticalprogram.Studentsfromalloverthecountryparticipate,andtheprogramhelps25-30studentsayear.
