The silence was deafening and Profitable for all
President’s Message
Hi, I hope all is well. Mike and I went to Albuquerque between 20-27 April. I had an opportunity to go to
The Museum of Science and Natural History. There were a lot of fine rocks and fossils there. If you make it
out that way, it is a great way to kill an afternoon and it won’t empty your pocket book. They have a huge
chunk of smithsonite there, but I couldn't figure a way to get it in my pocket. Oh lust, lust. We should have
a great meeting in May. We will have a guest speaker on paleo that day, so make it a point to make it; you
won't be sorry. See you then and God Bless. Harold

Mineral Wells Fossil Park, Mineral Wells, TX
A former ‘borrow pit’ for the city of Mineral Wells now gives visitors a chance
to collect fossils from the 300-million-year-old (Pennsylvanian) shale. Open all
day Friday through Monday at no charge, the site yields crinoids, bivalves,
brachiopods, corals, trilobites and much more. The Dallas Paleontological
Society has a volunteer program for this unusual public resource.
Ladonia Fossil Park, Ladonia, TX
Sediments in the bluffs of the North Sulphur River near Dallas yield all kinds of Cretaceous
fossils from mosasaur bones to ammonites, bivalves and shark teeth. The Pleistocene
sediments above have mammoth bones and teeth. This is a rugged, at-your-own-risk kind of
place where you need to watch for snakes, slides, feral pigs and sudden floods from controlled
water releases

May Birthstone
Source: http://www.americangemsociety.org/may-birthstone
Emerald
As the birthstone for May, the emerald, a symbol of rebirth, is believed to grant the owner foresight, good fortune,
and youth. Emerald, derived from the word smaragdus, meaning green in Greek, was mined in Egypt as early as
330 B.C. Today, most of the world’s emeralds are mined in Colombia, Brazil, Afghanistan, and Zambia. The
availability of high-quality emerald is limited; consequently, treatments to improve clarity are performed
regularly.

April 28, 2014 TXI Field Trip Report
A great adventure. The day started out warm and windy. After a short 47-mile drive from Plano to Midlothian TXI
cement plant, we met up with our group; TXI furnished ‘hard hat and safety glasses’ for those who needed them,
and off we went!
The hunting took place in large cleared areas, large mounds of dirt, rocks and boulders. We had a choice of
looking for sharks teeth, septerian nodules, marine fossils or pyrite. Having done this trip once before looking for
shark teeth, we chose to look for pyrite.
During the two-hour time, we found a bucket-full of marble and pencil size pyrite, and some larger pieces (2” x
2”), really nice to look at.
We enjoyed ourselves and are looking forward to going again. Thanks to David Dobson and the people of TXI
Cement Plant who made these trips possible.

Classes at the Shop
Qualifying Class. The shop only has 5 Genie's so we can only teach 5 students at a
time in the Qualifying Class. There is a waiting list of people who want this
class. So please register with Monika and she will notify you when she has a class
opening.
Other classes: Wire-wrapping, Metal Clay, Chainmail, Metal Smithing, etc. are
taught in the shop classroom. Due to space limitations we also limit the size of these
classes to 5 or less.
How to Register. If you are interested in taking a class, contact Monika Brown at
[email protected] . Ask to be placed on the Waiting List for the class you are
interested in. When Monika has an opening in a class she will contact you to ask if
you can attend on the date of the class. If you cannot she will keep you on the
waiting list. Once she has registered you she sends out a confirmation email
confirming your attendance in class. While you may be on the waiting list that does
not mean that you will be in the next class if we have a long waiting list.
Thanks for your understanding in this matter! We have a great group of volunteer
teachers so please tell them how much you appreciate their willingness to teach! If
you are interesting in teaching a class, bring some samples to the next meeting and
talk to Monika about your ideas.

“WHAT IS THE MOHS HARDNESS SCALE FOR MINERALS?”
Mineral Hardness is measured on a Scale: In 1812, German mineralogist Frederic Mohs penned what
would become what is referred to as Mohs’ Scale of Mineral Hardness. For his scale, he selected 10 minerals
based upon their being common and readily available. It should be noted that the scale is not actually linear but
rather arbitrary. Here is the Mohs Scale of hardness including the hardness number, the mineral associated and its
common uses.
Mineral Hardness 1 – Talc: Associations and uses: talcum powder
Mineral Hardness 2 – Gypsum: Associations and uses: Plaster of Paris. Gypsum is formed when
seawater evaporates from the Earth’s surface.
Mineral Hardness 3 – Calcite: Associations and uses: Limestone and most shells contain calcite.
Mineral Hardness 4 – Fluorite: Associations and uses: Fluorine in fluorite prevents tooth decay.
Mineral Hardness 5 – Apatite: Associations and uses: used to manufacture fertilizer
Mineral Hardness 6 – Orthoclase: Associations and uses: Orthoclase is a feldspar
Mineral Hardness 7 – Quartz: Associations and uses: is a lovely crystal and is often used in jewelry
Mineral Hardness 8 – Topaz: Associations and uses: The November birthstone.
Mineral Hardness 9 – Corundum: Associations and uses: Sapphire and ruby are varieties of
corundum.
Mineral Hardness 10 – Diamond: Associations and uses: Used in jewelry and cutting tools.
Hopefully now you understand the Mohs Scale of Hardness. Thanks for watching. If you’d like to
learn more, please find us on the web at About.com.
