    1.Medical Duties

    A nurse in a psychiatric setting helps to implement the

    plan of care, as set forth by the doctor and followshis treatment orders. she takes care of the patient,carefully chart every detail of her interactions withand observations of patients, as well as vital

    medical information.2. Nurse clinician

    As the nurse cares for each of her patients, sheexamine him and institute a plan of care, coming upwith certain nursing diagnoses and care plans foreach diagnosis. These plans depend on eachpatient's specific problem and is tailored to each

    3. Demeanor

    It is important for the psychiatric nurse to be aware ofher demeanor, or the way she portrays herself. It isimportant for her to help patients to feel confidentin her as their caregiver. She should actively listento her patients and show that she is listening

    through maintaining eye contact; this helps withtrust.

    4. Patient Educator

    Nurse should not only fulfill the medical side of the

    care plan, but also educate her patients and theirfamilies. This education can extend from the mostbasic care to teaching the patient about the

    medications they are taking and their condition

    5. Patient Advocate

    It is also the nurse's job to stand up for her patients'rights as individuals. If she notices a mistake orsomething that just doesn't seem right in thepatient's treatment plan, she should first study itand then approach the doctor. Many mistakeshave been corrected because of an observantnurse.

    6. Care Manager

    Nurses assess patients and develop treatment plans,

    coordinate resources provided by others. The CareManager also manages patient needs andresources episodically and is skilled in managingpsychiatric rehabilitation as well relapseprevention

    In this role, the nurse evaluates patients in directencounters or by telephone in order to triage thepatient to the most appropriate level of care,including referrals to credentialed providers,

    Many managed care companies employ psychiatric

    nurses to function as utilization reviewers inwhich they review aspects of the patient's careand influences decisions about treatmentassignment. In this role they serve as

    "gatekeepers" to mental health services.

    Nurses who work as risk managers are charged with the

    task of decreasing the probability of adverse outcomesrelated to patient care. They engage in identifying riskfactors, individual and system-wide problems,corrective actions and the implementation of strategiesto reduce risk and prevent loss.

    10. Chief Quality Officer

    Nurse have assumed primary responsibility forformulating and implementing comprehensive quality

    management and improvement programs formanaged care companies. They engage in trainingother staff on-site and synthesize data related toperformance improvement, outcomes management

    and other health services research activities.

    1. Consultant role : .

    Advises family & other community resources

    about the level of support & care provided for aspecific group.

    2. Clinician role:

    Renders direct nursing care to the clients withinthe community. Nurses has to accept the clientsas they are; assists the client to develop coping

    abilities that promote psychologicalfunctioning. Nurses will identify the clientwith behavioral deviations, refer them, assistsfor therapeutic care & follow up.

    Counsels the family members and help them inmeeting the clients needs at home & reduces thesocial stigma associated with it. Motivates thecommunity to provide support to the families.

    4. Nurse educator role:

    Organizes community awareness campaigns onhealth promotion, maintenance & communityactions. Teaching the community on themanifestations of illness, importance of early

    diagnosis, so that they will be able to observe &refer cases immediately.

    Psychiatric care is based on multidisciplinary team

    Community mental health nurses visits the housesand assess the health status, coping strategies

    utilized by the family members, supportivesystems, plans, implements necessary care attheir doorsteps.
