Rolling Green Village Retirement Community has been a part of the Greenville community for

almost 30 years. The Rolling Green Village staff and residents are dedicated to serving both their own community and Greenville.

Whether it’s the Women on a Mission group collecting donations for inmates or the whole community coming together as part of the annual Festival of Giving to raise money for local charities in Greenville, Rolling Green Village is committed to making Greenville a great place to live and retire.

Rolling Green Village was born out of charitable giving. The land was once part of the property of Hoke and Mildred Smith. When the Greenville Baptist Association began the process of looking for land to

build a retirement community, where seniors could feel safe and enthusiastic about life, Hoke and Mildred decided to donate some of their farmland to make that dream a reality. Rolling Green Village residents and staff are mindful of these charitable beginnings and strive to continue that legacy today.

Ruth Wise has brought to Rolling Green Village her love of ukulele playing. Ms. Wise is a member of two different ukulele groups in the Upstate, the Bushy Creek Baptist Church Ukulele Group and the Happy Strummers Ukulele Group.

These dedicated ukulele players travel around the Upstate to assisted living communities, senior centers, and nursing homes. The Happy

Strummers will be playing at the Greenville Area Parkinson’s Association next month. Their dedication to bringing music and joy to seniors across the Upstate is inspiring, and demonstrates that helping someone out doesn’t have to involve any material goods – sometimes just a song can help.

Marge Wood of Rolling Green Village has been a certified volunteer at McCall’s Hospice House for the past five years, but she doesn’t do it alone. She is accompanied by her dog, Xiao Huang Ti (nicknamed Xiao Xiao), who visits the residents at McCall’s as a therapy pet. Xiao Xiao even has his own photo badge that notes his volunteer status.

He is a beloved member of the McCall’s team, and his presence always brings smiles and comfort not only to the patients, but also their families and the staff. “He seems to know just what to do and walks into the room always with a smile on his face,” said Mrs. Wood.

Greenville for almost twenty years

Pat Hendrix began volunteering long before she came to Rolling Green Village; she has been a delivery volunteer with Meals on Wheels Greenville for almost twenty years. She became involved with the organization through a friend at church, who she worked with for several years, before taking on routes on her own for about six years.

“Everyone I deliver to is so appreciative,” she says, “sometimes I’m the only person they’ll see all day, and they’re always grateful for the delivery.” Ms. Hendrix says she works hard to remember who likes what kind of food and always carries some dog treats for their furry friends as well. She and intends to keep making her weekly deliveries.

These three people are just a few of the many at Rolling Green Village who are dedicated to doing charitable work. This charitably focused outlook is seen not just in the residents of Rolling Green Village, but the community as a whole.

One of the biggest annual events

at Rolling Green Village is the Festival of Giving, when the community comes together to raise money for local charities in the area. The Festival features entertainment, a Fishing Tournament, a 5K Fun Run, a BBQ lunch, and live music.

Residents and guests donate money throughout the day, and this year they were able to raise over $6,000. The money was donated to the Alzheimer’s Association, Loaves and Fishes, Meals on Wheels, and Miracle Hill Ministries. “All

of our residents are really involved in the Festival, and it’s wonderful to see them coming together as a community to help the underserved of Greenville,” said Marketing Director Ruth Wood.

Rolling Green Village works closely with the local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association; in addition to raising money for the organization during the Festival of Giving, Rolling Green also participates in the annual local Walk to End Alzheimer’s in downtown Greenville. They also host their own Walk on the Rolling

Green Village campus to ensure that all residents can still participate and show their appreciation for the organization.

Both residents and staff attended the Upstate Walk this past October. The staff is dedicated to providing the best care possible for the residents, and this is enhanced by the support that independent living residents give to the Cedars Assisted Living neighborhood, Evergreen Place

Memory Care, and the Mildred L. Smith Health Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Althea Bishop and Alice Roberts are Rolling Green Village residents who help to look after the skilled care neighborhood by providing water and ice for the residents once a week. “We go to each room and refill their pitcher with fresh water and ice,” said Ms. Bishop. “They really appreciate it and we enjoy getting the chance to talk with people in different neighborhoods.”

Rolling Green Village also looks for opportunities to partner with their neighbors, including Shannon Forest Christian School. Earlier this year a team of residents from Rolling Green Village competed against Shannon Forest students

in a “Seniors vs. Seniors” Jeopardy competition. The event was a part of Shannon Forest’s larger mission project, and money was raised to support their food drive. Not only was a lot of money raised and a lot of fun had, the Rolling Green Village team beat the Shannon Forest seniors!
