CANDLE INTENTIONS

Church: Ann Personette Convent: Dolores Porter

Moses was in exile because he murdered an Egyptian who abused a Hebrew slave. When he meets God in a burning bush, God asks this murderer to lead the people. Talk about mercy and a mercy that is constant, for God is “I am who am,” that is, constant being. That ever-living God took flesh in Jesus. The parable about the fig tree is a statement about God’s desire to save us. Through Jesus the ever-living God cultivates us and fertilizes us with mercy. When we repent, we reorient our lives to live Jesus’ values and teachings. The same God who asked a murderer to lead the Israelites forgives and empowers us to bear fruit. Talk about mercy! The Corinthians thought they were better than anyone else. But they were sinners like everyone else. Paul advises them to learn from their ancestors who complained in the desert; many of them were saved, though not all. Some chose not to repent. Paul is the gardener who offers the Corinthians another chance to know God as kind and merciful.

The main source of operating funds for St. Thomas is our weekly / holyday offertory collections. The information below will show where the Parish is as of February 14, 2016 compared to the budget amount for the year. The break even date is June 30, 2016. The amount needed each week is $17,656 and the amount collected last weekend

was $14,679.

Budget Amount Year to Date Remaining Amount $900,500 $563,398 $337,102

The year to date amount is negative by $19,250 as of week number 33 in our budget year.

2016 LENTEN REGULATIONS 1. The days of Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday continues until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.

2. On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast.

3. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence.

4. The obligation to observe the laws of Abstinence and Fast "substantially", or as a whole, is a serious one.

5. Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are days designated for penance, but each individual may substitute the traditional abstinence from meat with the practice of voluntary self-denial as penance.

6. Time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, February 14th to The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, May 22nd.

*Canon 920, §1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year.

Men’s Scripture Reading and Reflection Men - want to do something for Lent? All men are invited Monday, March 7 at 7:30pm in St. James room for Men’s Scripture Reading and Reflection. We will do the readings for the next Sunday and discuss some of what was going on at that time. Come! Share the extraordinary Word of God with ordinary men and together we can learn more about our beautiful Catholic faith.

After all Masses: In Parish Center February 27th & 28th

2017 MASS BOOK OPENING

Tues., March 29th from 9:30am -1pm in the parish center.

Masses from January through December of 2017 will be scheduled. We will be taking intentions for 7:30 and 11:30 a.m.

daily masses and weekend Masses. We ask that you please limit the number of Masses you reserve. For this reason we are limiting Mass reservations on opening day to a maximum of two weekend Masses or four weekday Masses. For example, one can reserve four weekday Masses or two weekday and two weekend Masses. Perhaps a birthday or anniversary might be an initial date–thus giving all Parishioners the opportunity to reserve the dates and times they may wish. Another way to remember your deceased loved ones would be to make donations to our Memorial Fund. The Memorial Fund allows us to purchase needed Vestments, Altar Linens, Vessels, etc. to be used at the celebration of Mass. Also available are Sanctuary Offerings which include the Sanctuary Candles in Church, the Rectory and the Convent. They burn weekly in memory of your loved ones as well as for special intentions: birthdays, anniversaries, improved health, etc. Cards are available announcing your donation to both the Memorial Fund and the Sanctuary Candles.

Archdiocese of Newark Anniversary Masses

• Sunday, May 1 - 50 years (All Counties) • Sunday, April 24 - 5 and 25 years (All Counties)

All Masses will be celebrated at 3:00 p.m. To register, call the Parish Center, 973-338-9190
