Roman Pot Status
Gennaro RuggieroTOTEM Week Collaboration Meeting December‘08
Review since the last Coll. Meet.
• Status of Production– Production Planning (until pot #12)
• Tests/Commissioning in H8 and IP 5
Production Planning (I)
• The construction of each Detector Package requires a sequence of operations which lasts more than 1.5 months .
• This planning is meant to be “no earlier than ...”
• During this sequence we also need services/technician which belong to other groups/experiments and the sharing of resources is not always obvious
Production Planning (II) Definition of all the tests for the “pot” before going to the tunnel + finalisation of the DCS requirements
Same production logic for all pots; critical part: hybrid construction
“IP5 Installation” means: ready for IP5 Installation
RP hybrids: actual status
Failures and Reworks: • Bottleneck of the production chain is the VFAT test• After failing tests only 8 VFATs replaced so far. The replacement of the VFAT has always
turned in a positive test result
The construction of the RP hybrid is made of an alternated sequence of mounting and inspecting/testing steps. The failure at different steps is followed by further investigation and relocation of the hybrid to a rework slot.

ProductionFor what is available we should not have (major) problems in following the planning until Pot6
* Production not fully delivered, ~1/4 had been rejected for black pad

3 H8 under test
>>> Not to forget:
Beam test to Cosmic rays test setup in H8• Detector package position swapped to the “cosmics position”• Detector package with the thin window inserted in a stainless steel
(vacuum) vessel with thin plastic windows• Cosmics selection by 4 scintillators (2 top and 2 bottom of the package) • Low rates... Long data taking (test results shown by Valentina)• Moreover, presence in H8 needed all the time:
• Low Voltage/High Voltage manual• Cooling/ Vacuum: manual control and online monitoring
• Cooling plant operating Pot #3, Thermo-model and dummy heat load
Pot #3 in cosmics position
H8 cooling
Point 5: RP cooling
valves
PLC rack
C3F8 storage tank
compressors
dummy load
USC 55 • Cooling plant ready in USC 55 since months• Piping serving stations at 220m completed
(both sides)• Piping serving stations at 147m will be
completed in January ’09• Controls, monitoring, warnings and alarms
running on station (only) .
• First cooling liquid flowing in the 2 installed pots in October
• Temperature/pressure data monitoring at the station with its own controls and in the Pot with the mini-dcs prepared by Vic’s group
• Absence of a real DCS obliges presence in IP5 for all the duration of the test
Plane 3 and 8 at -35°C (electronics OFF)
Point 5: Commissioning of the RPsLately we had an “exercise” at point 5 for 3 days. The objective was to run the RPs ( cooling, low/high voltage, environmental sensors monitoring) and start the commissioning of the DAQ in IP5 (see Emilio’s talk as well).
Negative Points• This has required the presence in loco of about 11 people (also at same time...)• Very hard working conditions at the moment• Among other things, limited by shut-down programs in CMS and Tunnels of which we
were not aware of.• No chances of redoing this exercise before end January 09
Positive Points• Cooling plant Ok• Environ. monitoring cumbersome but OK• One scan on the pot 56 (readout via S-Link)• LV delivery seemed OK, but monitoring still
not fully understood• Good restaurant in Cessy...
