SECOND COLLECTION FOR NATURAL DISASTERS

Bishop Barres has authorized a special second collection to assist those impacted by some of the

most recent natural disasters. Our parish will have a second collection the weekend of Octo-

ber 27th/28th. The monies collected will be used to support the efforts of Catholic Charities

USA and/or Catholic Relief Services, the official relief agencies of the US Catholic Church, as

they and their local agencies respond to the immediate emergency needs for such necessities as

water, food, shelter and medical care and aid in the long-term rebuilding and recovery efforts,

and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops for pastoral and reconstruction needs of

the Church. Please be as generous as your means will allow.

FOCUS ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

From Catholics for Freedom of Religion

www.cffor.org Pennsylvania residents, Scott & Theresa Fetterolf, were ordered by government officials to stop using

their 35-acre farm to host Bible studies and other Christian gatherings or pay $500 per day in

fines. Since 2003, the property was used for these gatherings, carrying on a decades old practice held by the

previous owner.

In October, the city decided that the farm violated a zoning ordinance that states a "place of worship or assem-

bly" must apply for a permit and issued a "Notice of Violation/Cease and Desist Order." However, other prop-

erties that host secular counterparts to these activities like parties, political fundraisers, and book clubs are not

banned.

"Government should not target religious activities for punishment, particularly when similar secular activities

are permitted," said Senior Counsel for the Independent Law Center. "In America, no government can cate-

gorically ban people from assembling to worship on one's own property." The lawsuit states that "There is no compelling interest in prohibiting Bible studies, meetings where religious

songs are sung, religious retreats/fellowship, and religious fundraisers, especially when secular counterparts of

these activities are permitted."

Pastor & Wife Ordered to Stop Bible Studies in their Apartment. A semi-retired Lutheran pastor and

his wife, both in their mid-80s, were ordered by their Virginia apartment complex to stop holding Bible

studies or face eviction. In 2017, residents asked Pastor Hauges to lead a Bible study in the complex to which

he agreed and applied to reserve the community room for the study. But in 2018, other residents attempted to

interfere with the Bible study and the management outlawed religious activities in the community room and

any private apartment, labeling this study a "business."

First Liberty law firm is now representing the pastor who has agreed to stop leading the Bible studies until the

matter is resolved.

"Evicting elderly residents from their home for holding a Bible Study is not only outrageous, it's illegal,"

said counsel for First Liberty. "It's frightening that a management company would use the threat of

eviction to stop residents from meeting together to discuss any issue, let alone their faith." pafamily.org, 7/18/18; christiannews.net, 7/20/18; citizensgo.org, 7/27/18; theblaze.com, 8/24/18)

LITURGY CORNER

PART THREE of the new Catechism finishes up with Other Liturgical Cele-

brations. The first article covers Sacramentals.

Sacramentals are sacred signs instituted by the Church. They prepare men to

receive the fruit of the Sacraments and sanctify different circumstances of life.

Among the sacramentals blessings occupy an important place. Sacramentals

derive from the baptismal priesthood: every baptized person is called to be a

“blessing,” and to bless. Hence lay people may preside at certain blessings. Blessings include both

praise of God for his works and gifts, and the Church’s intercession for men that they may be able to

use God’s gifts according to the spirit of the Gospel. Sacramentals do not confer the grace of the

Holy Spirit in the way that the sacraments do, but by the Church’s prayer, they prepare us to receive

grace and dispose us to cooperate with it. Among sacramentals blessings come first. Certain bless-

ings have a lasting importance because they consecrate persons to God, or reserve objects and

places for liturgical use.

The dedication or blessing of a church or an altar, the blessing of holy oils, vessels, and vestments,

bells, etc., can be mentioned as examples of blessings that concern objects. In addition to the liturgy,

Christian life is nourished by various forms of popular piety, rooted in the different cultures. The re-

ligious sense of the Christian people has always found expression in various forms of piety surround-

ing the Church’s sacramental life, such as the veneration of relics, visits to sanctuaries, pilgrimages,

processions, the stations of the cross, the rosary, medals, These expressions of piety extend the litur-

gical life of the Church, but do not replace it. While carefully clarifying them in the light of faith, the

Church fosters the forms of popular piety that express an evangelical instinct and a human wisdom

and that enrich Christian life.

A common form of blessing in which many of us participate is saying grace before and after meals.

That is an example of how we practice our baptismal priesthood. Making the stations pf the cross, or

praying the rosary, especially as we meditate on the stations and the mysteries, are excellent ways to

use Sacramentals to enhance our spiritual life and prepare us to receive grace and cooperate with

those graces`
