The University of Petroşani is an academic education institution whose beginnings date

back in 1948. The foundation of the Coal Institute at Petroşani in 1948 represents an

important moment in the social, economic and cultural life of the Jiu Valley, proving,

from a historical perspective, beneficial both for our area and for the general evolution of

Romanian economy, with particular emphasis on the field of mining.

The Jiu Valley was one of the few industrial, highly urban areas in Romania, thus

displaying the conditions for hosting such an institution. It was also a strong industrial

center with top specialists, which provided a suitable framework for applied education.

With the reorganization of higher mining education in 1952, the Coal Institute changes

into the Mining Institute Petroşani. Thus, by the Order of the Minister of Education no.

4894/1991 the Mining Institute in Petroşani – consisting of two faculties: the Faculty of

Mining Engineering and the Faculty of Electromechanical Machines and Installations,

and the Academic Technical and Administration College in Petroşani, founded in 1990 –

changes its name into the Technical University of Petroşani.

Beginning with 1995, the Technical University of Petroşani becomes the University of

Petroşani, consisting of three faculties: the Faculty of Mining Engineering, the Faculty of

Electromechanical Machines and Installations, the Faculty of Sciences and the Academic

Technical and Administration College.

Presentation of the school

“I.G.Duca” Secondary School is situated in the centre of the

municipal town Petroşani, in Hunedoara county/region. Our school

carries out its education activities in three buildings which are

situated to a small distance one from another. The main building is

on Şt.O.Iosif Street, No.4, a second one is on 1 Decembrie 1918

Avenue and the third one is on Oituz Street, No.7. It is one of the

biggest schools in our county including different types of

education for a big number of pupils of different ages (5 to 14

years old): pre-school education, primary school education,

Page 5: Romania

secondary school education, inclusive education and additional

musical education.

Our school has got qualified teachers and a varied school

population. It has at its disposal good resources and good

equipment, being the property of the City Council Petroşani.

Some of the types of educational activities offered to the Roma

children at our school include programs that aim at the integration

of these pupils into the mass education and the assistance for the

pupils with special needs through compensatory activities and their

involvement in all the extra-curricular activities.

Although, in our school are taught all kind of pupils they have

good grades and they achieve success in many subject, artistic and

sport competitions. Our school is one of the most successful and

active schools in our town.

Our school is an example of implementing the concepts of the

educational reform, offering new and important opportunities for

all the pupils who come to our school. Our school aims at being a

place of culture and civilization, a place that has its doors open for

Page 6: Romania

all those who need education, no matter what their religion or

ethnic culture is. In order to attain this desideratum our school aims

at involving its teachers in different training programs, long life

learning programs, fact that will allow providing a high quality

education. At the same time we focus upon establishing a

stimulating atmosphere for pupils and teachers through a correct

applying of the educational policies of the Ministry of Education

so that to make easier the individual development of every young

pupil who benefits from the educational system of our school and

so that the pupils to become confident and to give a sense to their

dreams and aspirations, both in their personal and professional

plan. By promoting an open and flexible education and by assuring

a good and strategic communications with the other community

institutions, our school wants to offer a model of educational

process that educates active and efficient young people who are

and will be able to integrate in the life of the big European family.

Page 7: Romania

We believe that taking part in such a project will help our pupils

improve their skills such as effective communication, self

expression and problem solving. Being member of the European

community, we want to improve our students’ understanding of

European values. Our students are educated and they are interested

in taking part in different projects. The active participation of

students in making projects is one of the most important tasks in

our educational work. This will help them learn how to work in a

team and to create with imagination and knowledge their own

materials and products. They like working hard to achieve success.

We want to provide our students with the chance to learn about

other cultures by experiencing them, and thus overcome prejudices

and rigid attitudes by getting to know each other better through

personal contacts, working together in a common project with

similar goals and aims, experiencing new surroundings. A nice

side-effect, of course, is that by getting to know each other better

our pupils develop a deeper feeling of cultural awareness, develop

a sense of deeper understanding for cultural differences and learn

to exercise tolerance, respect and understanding for others.

In a world of terrorism it’s relevant to further the mutual respect

and the readiness to cooperate and work together instead of

working against each other. We want to raise healthy, informed,

well educated students with wider world views who do not blindly

stick on rigid ideas.

And, of course, visiting other countries and meeting new people is

the best way to learn more about foreign history, cultures,

traditions and wider world views. We hope that the project will

help us to achieve these purposes.
