Romanian VerbsRomanian verbs have 6 different categories: a verbs, everbs, ea verbs, i verbs, verbs, and irregular. The infinitive is the ending of a verb. I told the 5 different

infinitive endings. Each of these verbs havedifferent conjugationrules. A conjugation of a verb ischanging the infinitive form to the form for a certainperson view. An irregular verb doesn't follow the originalrules set for the certain verb infinitive ending, so thereforewe call it "irregular". :).

In English, our verbs (let's say talk) only has one form ofconjugation in the present tense which is in the thirdperson singular (he/she/it talks). It adds an "s" at the end.Romanian has 6 different conjugations to describe the

view of the action of the person.Example: schia (ski) is an -a verb, so for the 1st personsingular view, -a would change to -ez --> Eu schiez.

a schia is the pure form of the verb which is like "to ski"which is the pure form of the verb in English.

In Romanian, you usually drop the subject pronounbecause the conjugation will tell its person form. Euschiez --> Schiez. However, if you want to be more polite

or to emphasize the person doing the action, the subjectpronoun does not need to be dropped.

Romanian does not have a progressive tense, or anemphatic tense. Progressive tense is the -ing conjugationin English. There is no "I am speaking" equivalent inRomanian. The emphatic tense is adding "do" before theverb, and after the subject pronoun. There is no "I dospeak" equilavent in Romanian. Those usually translateliterally to "I speak" for present tense in Romanian, butcan mean all "I speak/I am speaking/I do speak".

Verb Conjugation RulesGet ready for a longer lesson than usual. This lessons willbasically describe the rules for Romanian verbconjugations in the simple present tense. After this, you'llbe able to conjugate most Romanian regular verbs in thesimple present tense. Just hope you find out that the verbis regular first :).

Romanian verb infinitive endings take the -a -e -ea and -iendings. -e and -ea verbs have the same basic conjugationrules. Here are the regular verb conjugation rules for thepresent tense:

    -A Conjugation Verb Rules

First off, the -a infinitive ending is a little tricky, becausethey can have 2 different endings except for the 1st personplural and 2nd person plural.

    Eu: -, -ezTu: -i, -eziEl/Ea: -, -eazNoi: -m, -mVoi: -ai, -aiEi/Ele: -, -eaz

    Tu dansezi Voi dansai

    El/eadanseaz

    Ei/eledanseaz

    -E Conjugation Verb Rules

-e and -ea verbs only have 2 different regular endings onthe 1sg, and 3pl, but I know there is a rule for this. The -eor -ea verbs take -u in the 1sg and 3pl conjugations if theroot ends in a vowel

    Eu: -, (-u)Tu: -i

    El/Ea: -eNoi: -emVoi: -eiEi/Ele: -

    a merge (to go)

    Tu scrii Voi scriei

    -I Conjugation Verb Rules

-i verbs are the easier ones since they don't have anyfancy rules to regular present tense conjugations.

    Eu: -esc

If you want to say you're going somewhere or doingsomething and you want to specify the day you say,Eu merg la bucureti luni - I'm going to BucharestMondayNo preposition needed. If you want to stress you're going on Monday (put moreemphasis that you are) you say,Eu merg luni la bucureti

If you want to say you go somewhere repeatedly and youwant to specify the date you say,

Present SubjunctiveThe subjunctive is a big part in everyday Romanianspeech. This is another long lesson, so get prepared :P.Let's get started.

The subjunctive expresses wishes, wants, and can. Thesubjunctive marker is s.

Nu vrei s mergi la Bucureti? - Don't you want to go toBucharest?Da, Vreau s merg la Bucureti - Yes, I want to go toBucharest.

Pot s scriu foarte bine - I can write very well.Poi s vorbeti romnete? - Can you speak Romanian?

If you haven't seen yet. The action verb person matchesthe subjunctive verb. That's how it is in this case. Next isa list of the verbs you can use in the subjunctive.

    a vrea (to want)

    Singular Plural

    Eu vreau Noi vrem

    Tu vrei Voi vrei

    El/ea vrea Ei/ele vor

    a putea (can / may)

    Singular Plural

    Eu pot Noi putem

    Tu poi Voi putei

    El/ea poate Ei/ele pot

A trebui is the verb that expresses you must, you need, oryou have to do something.

Trebuie s vorbesc cu el - I need to speak to himVoi trebuie s mergei la coal - You need to go toschool.Trebuie s plecm mine - We must leave tomorrow

  • 7/31/2019 Romanian Lang

    38/61

If you want to say "I want you to.." you say it like this:Vreau s vezi sta! - I want you to see this!

As you probably notice, a vrea is in the 1st person

singular (vreau), while a vedea is in the 2nd personsingular (vezi). This is how it works if you want to say "Iwant you to..."

In Romanian you can't say "I need you to see this" or "youneed them to see this", instead it's just "you need to seethis" or "they need to see this". You should get it. ;)Trebuie s vezi sta! - You need to see this!

a trebui in the present tense in all persons is always"trebuie". Pretty easy ;).

There is another expression for need. "a avea nevoie de".That's only used if you need something, not need to dosomething. You can say Am nevoie de odihn - I need torest. You can say am, ai, etc.. nevoie de to do somethingonly if the something is in the subject sense, not verb.Basically "am nevoie de" translates to "i have a need of".I hope I didn't confuse you. ;) On to the subjunctive.

The subjunctive is also used with ca. ca s. Ca expresses"as" in English. Ca s basically is close to "in order to" or

"so that" in English. And ca s nu is close to "lest" inEnglish.

Merg la coal ca s nv - I'm going to school in orderto learn.El Trebuie s vorbeasc cu noi ca s nelegem - Heneeds to speak with us so that we understand.

*1 El nu-i ca noi - He is not like us

*1 Nu-i is the contraction for "nu este / e". This can also

apply to a word that ends in vowel with este as the nextword.

The subjunctive used after a preposition is used when youwant to use a verb after a preposition.

Ea mereu vorbete fr se gndeasc - she always

    speaks without thinking.

Also used for a condition, expressed with "cu condiiac". Translated to English, it's close to "only if" andliterally it means "with the condition to"

Vin la tine cu condiia s bem o bere. - I'm coming toyour place only if we can drink a beer.

The expression "la tine" means at/to your place. It's usedlike other accusative pronouns. la mine - at/to myplace, la el - at/to his place, etc.

When you want to say "let's go" or something similar to"let's" in an imperative form, you use s and the 1stperson plural verb. You can use "Hai s" to make sort of a

    stronger command.S mergem! - Let's go!

Hai s bem ceva. - Let's drink something.

Also when used in a question form, it's similar to should.

    S plecm? - Should we leave?Unde s merg - Where should I go?Ce s fac - what should I do?

You can say "numai s", and that closely expresses "it'sust that (subject) want" in English. Numai means "only".

Numai s vorbesc cu ea! - It's just that I want to speak toher.Numai s vin i ei - It's just that we want them to cometoo.

This is the hard part of it all, but you'll get used to it. Inthe 3rd person singular and plural, there are some changes

for the verb after the subjunctive.

forms for more emphasis when it's not needed, or be usedindependently. Always use 'pe' before the stressed form.Example sentence.

    Te Iubesc pe tine.

    Pe mine?Da, pe tine!I love you(you love) me?Yes, you!

"Te iubesc tine" cannot work. A stressed accusativepronoun always has to have a preposition. Speaking moreof 'pe'. You also use it before a person that everyoneknows, a name of a person or animal, or toy doll, teddy-bear.. somewhere along those lines that have to do with an

inanimate object being a metaphor for a person. If it's ageneral person, character, animal, or a location, you don'tuse 'pe'.

-e verbs: replace -e, with ut, (if final consonant is d,change to z)(start) ncepe, nceput(believe, think) crede, crezut

-e verbs: e changes to s. And if final vowel is i, change eto s(write) scrie, scris(understand) nelege, neles(laugh) rde, rs

-e verbs: change e to t(tear apart) rupe, rupt(boil) fierbe, fiert(break) sparge, spart

-i verbs: add t(exit, get out) iei, ieit(sleep) dormi, dormit

    - verbs: replace with t(hate) ur, urt

-a, -ea, -i, and - verbs have the suffixes at, ut, it, and t.-e verbs don't have a set standard for their conjugations. The best thing to do for them is to learn their pastparticiples by heart. Now, for some example sentences at

last!Ai but ultima bere din frigider? - Did you drink thelast beer from the refrigerator?Da, de ce? N-am tiut c ai vrut nite bere. - Yes, why?I didn't know that you wanted some beer. Ai spartmasa! - You broke the table!a fost spart mai demult. - It was broken a while ago.

Sometimes the past tense conjugation of the verb can beused as an adjective as well.
