Last week…

Change for believers, as every Christian knows, is not automatic, as some have

claimed.

But, why should we expect that?

That gives us a new inner person and unites us to the Body of Christ; in His death, burial,

and resurrection.

That whole “body of work”, body of sins we committed through our physical bodies, is in

our past and it’s rule over us has been broken.

The goal is that we should no longer be enslaved to it.

Romans 6:8-9

It is critical that we know this fundamental truth:

“Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion

over Him.”

Page 25: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Death’s authority is broken.“Death reigned from Adam through Moses…”

However…

Page 28: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 5:20b-21

“…Where sin abounded grace abounded much more, so that as sin reigned in death,

even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus

Christ our Lord”.

Romans 6:10-11

Christ no longer needs to deal with sin as He did on the cross.

It has been permanently dealt with.

Romans 6:10-11

That’s how ours should be!

Page 33: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:10-11

We are to live our lives with this Identification Truth that begins in 6:3.

Page 34: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:10-11

This is one of the first major actions believers need to make.

Page 35: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:10-11

The reality is that we are united to Jesus Christ, dead to sin and alive to God.

Page 36: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:10-11

Satan will go to great lengths to blur this reality and gets cooperation from our flesh

and the world!

Page 37: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:10-11

“Consider”Same word as God “imputing” righteousness

earlier (4:3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 22, 23, 24).

Page 38: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:10-11

We are to live our lives regarding ourselves the way God does; according to reality.

Page 39: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:10-11

But, the further reality is that we don’t have to live according to that reality.

Page 40: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:10-11

Anyone who says believers can’t and don’t live contrary to their new lives is not being honest with their own lives and the reality

we all observe.

Page 41: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:10-11

Nothing could be farther from the truth than that godly living is automatic for

believers.

Page 42: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:10-11

This problem is not solved by inserting ideas of godly living like “lifestyle” that are not, and

cannot be, defined.

Page 43: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:10-11

Practically, this theology leads only to frustration and/or self-delusion.

Page 44: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:10-11

However, the reality is that, with the proper understanding, Christians can enjoy the

victory Christ has brought!

Page 45: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:12-14

When we “consider” this spiritual reality true, it should result in behavior consistent

with that reality!

Page 46: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:12-14

Before believing, we allowed sin to rule our lives by giving members of our body to a

lifestyle consistent with it.

Page 47: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:12-14

Now, we should give those same members to the goals and activities consistent with

godly living.

Page 48: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Page 49: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:12-14

Our commitment to new life should be intentional!

Page 51: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:12-14

Our bodies were made available for sin and now they should be made available to God

and His purposes.

Page 52: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:12-14

In other words, our actions should match our new attitudes.

Page 53: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:12-14

Sin no longer has the ability to rule over us.

Page 54: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:14

The idea is expressed well by the Anchor Bible, “You must not allow sin to rule you”.

(Fitzmyer, Romans, p. 447)

The Mosaic Law is not effective in helping us grow.

Romans 6:14

When taken as a whole, vv. 12-14 teach us that it is only the rule of grace that can free us

from sin.

Page 57: Romans 6:10-11 k. Overview of Romans I. Intro. + Theme1:1-17 II. Condemnation1:18-3:20 III. Justification3:21-5:11 IV. Sanctification5:12-8:39 V. Illustration9:1-11:36

Romans 6:14

The reality is that all believers know that sin can overwhelm us.

But, when Paul’s teachings are understood and followed, we can be assured that sin’s

dominion will not win out.

Like our risen Lord, we can experience freedom from sin!
