Marriage/Gender Roles " #n the era %hen the tragic lo&e stor! or Romeo and Juliet too( place
gender meant just a+out e&er!thing in the %orld o$ politics and other (e! topics o$ the era* .eing
a male meant that !ou had no $ear %hat so e&er* 'hen Romeo heard o$ his possi+le exile due to
(illing T!+alt in the duel he started thin( that committing suicide ma! +e a +etter option then
li&ing in exile $or the rest o$ his li$e or at least until it %as sa$e $or his return to the to%n o$
Verona* 'hen :riar con$ronts Romeo a+out his decision a+out committing suicide he starts
calling Romeo a co%ard and a %imp $or e&en thin( or ac(no%ledging that he could ta(e the eas!
%a! out* 5old th! desperate hand rt thou a man; Th! $orm cries out thou art* Th! tears are

Romeo %ith these lines he is calling Romeo and %omanish2 %imp +ecause e&en though he is a
man he is cr!ing and thin(ing o$ suicide %hich is &er! unman li(e thing to do during the era*
nother example marriage and gender roles in Romeo and Juliet can +e seen %hen Juliet)s $ather
?ord Capulet sa!s that he need a $ul$illing man to $ill his role as lord once he is no longer li&ing
and the +est %a! to do that is +! ha&ing some+od! marr! Juliet* This sho%s marriage roles +!
ela+orating that a man meant e&er!thing to the $amil! man s!m+oli@ed po%er- control- and
%ealth %hich %ere the three main goals to achie&e in li$e at the time*
Love v. Infatuation> $ter hearing that he %as exiled $rom Verona- Romeo is grie$ stric(en and
is in a deep state o$ depression* .ecause he is $or+idden $rom the land- he comprehends that it

gre% up &er! closel! %ith* #n the end the lo&e o&ercame the in$atuation $ull o$ hatred $or Romeo*
The Helper or Wise Adviser " 'hen Juliet is $aced %ith the $act that she must marr! Count
Parris- she con&e!s that she %ould rather ta(e her li$e rather than marr!ing him* Ao thou +ut

'ith this line- Juliet detonates to :riar ?a%rence that she %ill (ill hersel$ unless he has a solution

this sounds li(e the per$ect plan in order to e&ade her marriage %ith Count Parris* The onl!
dra%+ac( o$ the plan is that she %ould ha&e to lea&e her $amil! +ehind- +ut due to her true lo&e
o$ Romeo she concludes that Romeo is %orth gi&ing her $amil! up $or* :riar ?a%rence seems to
ha&e come up %ith the per$ect plan +ut as $oreshado%ed in the prologue his plan ma! not
produce the desired outcomes* #nstead o$ helping Juliet)s situation o$ her marriage %ith Romeo-
he instead ends up causing the death o$ +oth o$ the star>crossed lo&ers* 5e causes the indirect
