Room 9: Out and About in New Plymouth
Last Friday Room 9 spent the morning in New Plymouth.
First we went to Puke Ariki, participating in the “Voyage to the Deep” experience, then on to the
Fire Station, which
coincides with our learning
about Fire.
Kia ora koutou. Nga mihi nui ki te whanau o te kura Puketapu. Hello to Parents and Caregivers
What a fabulous long weekend! I hope everyone got to enjoy relaxing with friends and family in the winter sunshine.
Today it is our pleasure to celebrate Support Staff Day. We are lucky to have an incredible support staff team and each and every one plays an essential role in making Puketapu a great place to be. In fact, our school would not be able to operate without them. Our thanks to Paula who is our ray of sunshine and multi-talent on the front desk; Ray who so reliably multi-tasks behind the scenes, looking after the grounds and our computers and networks as well; Jay, Julia, Michelle, Lynette, Judith and Diane who do an incredible job daily supporting our tamariki and teachers in a huge range of ways; and Paula D, Sabrina, Leah, Toni and Sharron who do an awesome job keeping Puketapu clean and tidy.
It’s hard to believe that it is Wednesday again already and I have to confess that getting sufficient exercise remains my goal!
So far we have looked at ‘Self-Management’ and ‘Relating to Others’ key competencies. We bring these competencies together in “Participating and Contributing”.
Participating and Contributing is about:
Is about learning that is authentic. Participating actively in local, national and global communities. Balancing rights, roles & responsibilities. Responding appropriately as a group member.
Participating and Contributing are keys in family, school, sports, clubs, friendships and our social lives. We can help our kids learn and practice the Key Competencies …. They’re not automatic so keep up the great work teaching and modelling for your treasured tamariki.
Nga mihi nui. Kia pai to ra whakata.

Measles!
Taranaki is surrounded in measles! There are outbreaks all around us and likely that we may have cases in
Taranaki in the near future. Measles is easily preventable as there is an effective measles vaccine (MMR) which is
available free for all those who need it.
Measles is a severe disease: most people need to spend several weeks off school or work because they are so sick. About one in ten needs to be hospitalised. It is a highly infectious disease and spreads quickly in people
who are non-immune.
It is most infectious just before people develop the rash. Watch for: flu like symptoms: cough, fever, a runny nose, sore eyes… then a rash, which tends to start on the head.
If you suspect measles, PHONE your doctor or Healthline on 0800 611 116
A reminder to parents that the age limit to have a Facebook account is 13 years…
Lets Go!
Let’s make the most of the good weather and make
active trips to and from school. It’s great to see so
many people walking, biking and scooting to school.
