Older adults who want to stave off Alzheimer’s

disease may want to supple-ment their diets with large doses of B vitamins. So say researchers who found that vitamin B supplements cut

the rate of brain shrinkage in half in elderly people with Alzheimer’s warning signs. Brain shrinkage is a natural part of aging that occurs more rapidly in people with mild cognitive im-pairment, which is a precursor to Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. However, a two-year study shows that taking high daily doses of the B vitamins folate, B6, and B12 slowed the rate of brain atrophy by 30 percent. In some cases, the reduction in brain shrinkage attained through B vitamin supplementation reached as high as 53 percent.
