My name is Rory Nichol and I am currrently studying MLA Landscape Architecture at the University of Sheffield, due to graduate in July 2013. I have previously completed a BSc in Landscape Architecture with Ecology. During 2011-12 I completed a 12 month contract with Colvin & Moggridge Landscape Architects in Gloucestershire, gaining valuable experience and workplace skills.
My interests include football, technology, cooking, photography and travel. My aim is to secure a job in landscape Architecture as soon as possible after graduating and get started with a career in the profession; a long term goal is to get a project I have contributed to published!

“ ”a responsive heat, energy & resource core for London
CentralisedDocklandsDe ‘De-Centralised Docklands’ is the title of the ongoing special
project for my MLA studies. The project is taking a planning/design
route and the idea is to create a de-centralised resource hub in London
Docklands, removing utilities such as energy, heating & food production
from inefficient nationalised distribution chains and supplying them at
district and neighbourhood level, promoting social and environmental
sustainability through a public and engaging proposal.

The project is currently at a brief writing, surveying & strategic
planning stage, a site selection model has been applied to
London Docklands and the site surveyed & analysed.
Strategic proposals have been applied to provide a sustainable
and functioning framework for the design stages and address
the numerous issues regarding a de-centralised infrastructure
proposal.

LSC 5010: Urban Planning Project
Producing strategic proposals for the Upper Don valley in Sheffield, creating a program of sporting activities for a sub site called Parkwood Springs and providing an operable planning and design framework to help realise the proposals. The module involved extensive survey and analysis of relevant policies, land uses census data etc, including desk based ArcGIS work & further strategic design refinement.
I completed a 12 month contract at Colvin & Moggridge for my year in practice, from Sep 2011 to Sep 2012.
I was tasked with various landscape processes, ranging from CAD & hand produced technical drawings, to masterplan renderings in photoshop & LVIA production.
It was a fantastic introduction to a professional Landscape Architecture practice, and due to the relatively small office size I learnt alot from working directly with directors and associates.
As my contract progressed I was given more responsibility and one of my last projects was to assemble the complete underground service information for a large estate, involving client & contractor meetings, site visits and CAD drafting. Different but interesting!

Viewpoint 1 - Proposed
The visual impact of the proposed outbuilding and landscape framework on the key landscape qualities and character of the landscape is very slight. The built structures appear massed on the valley floor, embedded in vegetation, and open views across rolling fields to ridge top woodlands remain unaected by the proposal.
NOTES: Refer to FIGURE 1. for location of viewpoints.
London Green Infrastructure Ideas Competition
An open ideas competition run by the Garden Museum & the Landscape Institute to develop green infrastructure which engages
the public similar to the New York High Line. The entry required a 250 word statement & various visuals.
Bromley-By-Bow GasworksThe Bromley-by-Bow Gasworks are situated along the banks of the River Lea, East London, just south of the Olympic Park. Initially the site of the gunpowder rocket factory of William Congreve, providing the rockets fired by the British against the Americans in 1812. The use of Congreve rockets at the battle of Bladensburg led to the surrender of Washington DC, and the bombardment of Fort McHenry in 1814 inspired a line in the Star Spangled Banner; ‘and the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air’.The gasholders were constructed in 1872-1878 and have since become grade II listed structures. Production was ceased in the 1960’s leaving 7 Victorian gasholders rich in history and interest. The industrial character of the site provides huge potential to revitalise the gasworks into a contemporary urban park.
The proposals involve opening and re-involving the site within the existing green infrastructure of East London, eventually extending to meet the Olympic park, presenting an interesting and un-orthodox public greenspace, defined by the historical commentary of the towering Victorian gasholders. The structures essentially subdivide the park into a series of semi-permeable spaces allowing the creation of a rich variety of experiences within. The largest gasholder, to the south, will feature an observation deck at the top, providing fantastic views over numerous London landmarks, including Canary Wharf, the Shard, the Olympic Park and the 02 Arena, celebrating the industrious history of the Lea Valley and providing a viewpoint to enjoy the future evolution of London.
