SO WHO AND WHAT IS THE TCSA ? The idea to create the TCSA began in 1987 when the Desert Rifle and Pistol Club lost access to their Range which was situated near the current Hanford Patrol Firing Ranges. The TCSA was officially incorporated in 1992 and was the dream of a few dedicated people behind the driving force of Rose Iris Toberg. We are an organization of people with a variety of interests in shooting sports and we are all volunteers. Take a moment and consider how the TCSA started and look at where we are today and it is all due to people who stepped up to the plate and volunteered. The TCSA started with a patch of ground on a hillside and is now the finest shooting range in the Pacific Northwest. Trying to list the names of all those responsible who helped us get where we are today would be an impossible task. These are the people who pay their yearly membership dues and then give more: giving their time, energy and usually additional funds out of their own pockets to finish a project. We have no paid employees and we are all VOLUNTEERS! This is the time of year to pause and give “Thanks!” Thank you to those in the past and present who have: trained the Range Safety Officers, written the manuals, worked up the duty schedules, to the Range Safety Officers who open up and run the Ranges for the public, to those who have built and created the Pistol Bays, the Cowboy and Practical Pistol structures, the Shotgun Range, the High Power Range, the HESA Range and the Primitive Range. Thank you to all who have maintained the bathrooms, the water systems, the roads and the grounds.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT

By: George Hager

Howdy All ! It appears as if we have made it through the early stages of the Washington hunting seasons with no significant issues at the Range. I am extremely grateful for the eye towards SAFETY that all our members and patrons continue to display in maintaining a safe and enjoyable experience for all. It is through these efforts that allow us to continue to provide all a facility that we can utilize to exercise our 2

nd Amend-

ment freedoms. It IS our Range Safety Officers, under the direction of John Hill, that ensure all rules are followed and we all make it home safely to our families. Thank-you for promptly adhering to their direction!!

One item I would like to bring to the attention of our members and your families. Saturday November 11th IS Veteran’s Day. Many of our members are Veterans and I would like to thank each of you for your service! If you know a Vet or two, take a few moments of your time to thank them for their sacrifice. To this end, Sean Reffalt and I will be hosting a Vintage Military Rifle (VMR) Match on the morning of Veteran’s Day. Whilst the Match is for these old warhorses (rifles not Vets), we allow anyone with a safe rifle to shoot even if you are not in the prize pool. Immediately following the VMR we will be conducting our first Rattlesnake Rattle Battle. This Match will be roughly based upon the National Team Trophy Infantry Match conducted each year at Camp Perry. Main exception is that it will be an individual match and not a team effort. Please visit (https://www.tcsa.info/disciplines/highpower) to review the VMR Match program. Please see the TCSA High Power FaceBook page (https://www.facebook.com/TCSAHP/) for information regarding the Rattle Battle.

This Class is limited to 30 participants and will be filled on a first confirmed basis. This RSO Training Class is intended for those persons, except Life Members, who are willing to obligate themselves to open and operate the Rose-Iris Range for the public and general TCSA membership on three Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, or Sundays throughout the year. Daylight Savings Time Ends

By: Randy Absolon

Our last Class for 2017 was held on October 7th, there were 20 students who successfully completed the Class.

We anticipate that our next Class will be a Traditional Class in January of 2018, but have not finalized dates for next year’s classes at this time.

Students needing an Online Course Evaluation can look for available Classes on the WDFW website. At this time of year, there are typically fewer classes, so students should be prepared to travel farther to attend a class.

I would like to acknowledge and thank the other instructors on our teaching team. They are: Jeff Ayers, Shane Bigham, Ed Bush, Mike Patello, Jim Shattuck, Bob Spencer, and Joe Sundal. It would be impossible to offer Hunter Education Classes without their help. We have also had help from TCSA RSOs during the year and I would like to thank them also; their assistance is greatly appreciated and often occurred on short notice.

Also, my monthly reminder, RSOs using the HESA Range are expected to sign in at the Rose Iris Range before going over to the HESA range to shoot.

If you have questions on our Hunter Education Classes you can contact me at [email protected]

Check out Rattlesnake Mountain Shooting Facility/TCSA on Facebook! You can find us at: https://www.facebook.com/RMSFTCSA/.

When you visit the page, write a review and share your opinion about TCSA’s Rattlesnake Mountain Shooting Facility! Your review will let us know how we are doing and show us the areas that we need to make improvements. Contact Steve Scott with questions or comments at [email protected].

It is the veteran, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the veteran, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the veteran, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble.

HOLIDAY MEMBERSHIPS

By: Sue Verwest

It is time to start thinking about those Holiday Gifts!

If you are starting your Holiday shopping, consider a One Year Membership for the person in your life who enjoys spending time shooting at the Range. A NEW Membership will begin in December and will not expire until March 31st, 2019! A Membership RENEWAL will extend the membership to March 31st, 2019. If you are looking for a “bigger” gift, consider a Life Membership!! To purchase a Membership, fill out a Membership Application (found on our web site www.tcsa.info) and indicate on the form that it is a gift for the Holidays. Also, please let me know if you want the membership cards mailed to your address so you can give them personally or if you want them mailed directly to the person you are giving the gift to. In order to be able to process this in a timely manner, please plan ahead. We must receive this by December 7th. Any requests after December 7th may not be processed in time.

By: Mike Ensminger

Come out and shoot with us on November 5th. Shooter’s meeting will be at 9:15 a.m. so we can shoot at 9:30 a.m. We will be shooting 6 stages (150 hits) and you can enter with 2 guns if that is not enough shooting for you. Don’t forget, kids shoot free, so bring the whole family.

By: Mike and Robbie Ensminger

We had a beautiful day for our October Match and 17 shooters to enjoy it. Runamuck collected another

win, with Redline high lady for the day.

We will NOT be shooting in November due to the Thanksgiving holiday, but will be back

on our regular schedule (weather permitting) in December and through the winter.

Winter rules will be in effect, so wear whatever keeps you warm, expect places to stage everything, and bring your .22 rifle if you don’t want to scrounge brass.

By: Clint Bouslaugh

The Primitive Range will be holding their monthly shoot on November 18th from 9:00 a.m. until noon.

RANGE SCHEDULE: Our Match season is coming to a close, but we still have two solid shooting challenges the first half of November. We are shooting a Vintage Military Rifle (VMR) in honor of Veteran’s Day on November 11th and 50 yard Rimfire Benchrest Match at Rose Iris on November 14th.

Our full 2017 schedule is available at: https://www.tcsa.info/pdfs/highpower/match_descriptions/2017/High-Power-Schedule.pdf

RANGE CLOSURES AND MATCH SCHEDULE REVISIONS/CANCELLATIONS: The Precision Rifle Match scheduled for November 11th has been cancelled due to a conflict with a Regional Level Match the same weekend. Also, High Power will be closed on Tuesday, November 21st, for use by a local Department of Corrections sniper element.

RSO VOLUNTEERS: Thank you to all of our RSOs who either helped with Matches, leant a hand around the range, or supported us with your donations. We really appreciate it, and High Power would not be nearly as successful without your support. If you are interested in getting involved in High power shooting, just contact John Hauptmann at [email protected].

3-POSITION RIMFIRE: The weather was gorgeous, with periods of a slight breeze, for the Match on October 1st. Sean Reffalt was the Match winner shooting an insane 371-6x out of a possible 400-40x using a CZ trainer with open iron sights. George Hager finished a distant second with a 361-8x. The traditional Mad Minute was held after the 3-P Match; Charles and Charley Bonham both shot manually operated rifles, with Sr. besting Jr. by connecting with 11 of 13 shots fired, while George beat his semi-auto jam-o-matic into connecting with 34 out of 35 rounds.

SMALLBORE DEWAR: The weather was cool for the Match on October 10th, and the wind conditions were circular and contrary. Gary Meerdink shot 389-16X (97.25%) out of a possible 400. Ben Cook Placed 2nd also with 389-16X (97.25%.) Gary had one more X at the 100 yard distance thus breaking the tie.

SMALLBORE BENCHREST: The 2nd Tuesday 50 Yard .22LR Match was held on October 10th. It was a cool Fall day with almost no wind. Out of 250 total points were possible Gary Meerdink was Match Winner with 236-0X (94.4%) Ben Cook was 2nd with 232-1X (92.8%).

LONG RANGE PRONE: Rattlesnake’s annual NRA Long Range Regional was held October 6th – 8th. Weather conditions varied throughout the weekend, and

kept things interesting. In the end Gary Rasmussen was the top sling shooter, finishing the weekend’s aggregate with 556-25x out of 900 possible, just one point above Wayne Budbill. In the F Class (scopes and bipods) Target Rifle Division (.308/.223 only, Keith Ague finished with 816-11x, just 2 points above Canadian Jerry Teo. And to round things out, Keith Glasscock finished with 855-27x, just 2 points above Canadian Steve Baardsen.

SHORT RANGE ANY POSITION: The final 2017 Senior 60+ 200/300 Match of 2017 was held on October 24th. The range conditions were excellent with very low wind. John Schneider was Match winner with a 199-15X (99.5%.) Ben Cook placed second with 198-6X (99%.) Notice only a one point spread between the top two shooters. Thanks to Ben Cook and John Schneider for helping run the Match.

HIGH POWER GATE COMBINATION: If you need to be reminded of the gate combination, contact John Hauptmann at [email protected] or 308.9230.

Please contact: John Hauptmann at [email protected] or 308.9230 to schedule your training.

Roberta Johnson, Shotgun author has turned her pen over to Mark Monopoli. Mark! Welcome Aboard!

By: Mark Monopoli

There have been changes and upgrades going on at the Shotgun Range the past couple of months. If you have not been out lately come and look! While you are at it, bring your gun, some shells and shoot a couple of rounds!

Trap Field #2 has had the token machine moved to the north end of the 27-yard line. This was done to resolve some communication issues with the buried lines.

The upper Skeet field has a new rock retaining wall on the north side that looks great. If you look closely, about halfway down the wall there is a large rock that has a new plaque attached to it. The plaque was installed in appreciation of all the hard work Ron Geiger puts into maintaining our highly manicured fields. Thank you Ron!

The 5-Stand course is constantly seeing upgrades and changes. Eric Bickel and Phil Volkman have really done a great job in keeping the course set-up and running every

Sunday, 9 a.m. – Noon-ish. You have never shot 5-Stand?!? Well you should come out and give it a try. It is a great course and arguably one of the best around. It is also very affordable, a single token gets you 25 well thought out target presentations that are fun and challenging. New shooters are always welcome, and we will gladly offer to help everyone figure out the course and have a good time.

To help reduce maintenance time and costs some of the lawn has been removed and replaced with hardscapes. Our beautiful Trap, Skeet and 5-Stand fields are still lush and green, but the outlying grass areas have been paired back a bit.

Several of our TCSA Shotgun Members have been travelling around to Trap, Skeet, and Sporting Clays Shoots this summer and doing well, which is a testament to our great facility!

Names are removed from the RSO Schedule in this Newsletter before it is posted at the Rose-Iris and Shotgun Range and before it is posted on the web site to protect your privacy.

Please Be Responsible And Considerate

Toward Your Fellow RSOs

On Your Duty Day – Please Be There!

TCSA HATS: Our new camo hats are available for purchase! They can be found at the Rose Iris Range. 15.00 each (includes tax)

RSO/RO REMINDER It is your responsibility as an RSO/RO to find a substitute from the Swap List if you are unable to make your scheduled duty date. When you do arrange a swap date with another RSO/RO, you need to send an email to both John Hill, Chief RSO and Greg Spencer, RSO Scheduler with you and your replacements name and the dates involved. John Hill’s email address is [email protected] and Greg Spencer’s email address is [email protected]. If you fail to show up for your scheduled RSO Duty Day, your gate access card will be deactivated until you contact John Hill to straighten out your missed duty day issue. Contacting John or Greg hours before your scheduled duty day and letting them know you cannot make your duty day causes hardships for the RSO’s who are doing duty on that day. It has also caused us to shut down one side of the Rose Iris Range when we don’t have enough RSO’s to open both sides of the Range. Please be considerate towards your fellow RSO. On your Duty Day, please be there or find someone to swap with you by using the Swap List on the web site. And most important – Thank you for the time you give to TCSA! The time you volunteer at the Range has made us the best in the Northwest!

RSO access key cards are only to be used for opening gates. Access key cards are not to be used in place of or as a substitute for your Membership identification card.

RSOs must have their Membership Card confirming they are a current RSO.

Without your current Membership Card you will need to pay the $10.00 Daily Use Fee and shoot with the general public.
