Alif-Lam-Ra. As stated earlier, theknowledge of these Isolated Letters isonly with Allah-SWT and His-SWT

Prophet-SW. The devoted servants ofAllah-SWT , who are competent inknowledge of Deen are also blessedwith this knowledge to a certaindegree. For the Muslims in generalonly recitation suffices and it is notproper to attempt an interpretation bymere conjecture or approximation.

These Ayat are of a Glorious Book,a treasure of wisdom. It is very easy tounderstand even for an unletteredshepherd, provided he has a soundmind. For if the message is full ofwisdom but the listener has nointellect he shall not understand it. Forinstance, some people are amazedthat Allaah-SWT has revealed His-SWT Message unto a human being towarn mankind of the perils of life. Thisis thoroughly logical for if theProphets-AS were raised fromanother creation like angels or Jinn, mankind could not have benefitedfrom them. First of all an angel wouldnot have been visible to the humanbeings, and to be visible he wouldhave to assume a human form. Thenwhy an angel, who differs in hisqualities and in his requirements fromthe human beings? Therefore, it wasnot rational at all. To raise a Prophet-AS from amongst the mankind wasabsolutely logical but they fail tounderstand this simple point.

The Holy Prophet-SW mustconvey glad tidings to those who haveembraced Islam, for they havecertainly stepped into righteousness, indeed a very strong foothold. Itneither breaks nor can ever be lostbecause it is from their Rabb-SWTand is everlasting. Giving rewards ondeeds is directly related to His-SWTProvidence; that is why the AttributiveName Rabb-SWT is used here. Butthe non believers have such pervertedminds that they label the HolyProphet-SW as a perfect magicianwho brings information from both nearand far-off places, or gives accurateprophecies to establish himself-SW.

fact, anyone denying the Islamicobligations would deserve a similartreatment.

When some people refused to payZakat the First Caliph Hadhrat AbuBakr Siddiq-RAU, on the authority ofthis Ayah declared Jihad againstthem, which was corroborated by theCompanions-RAU. And if anyoneamongst the penitent seeks protectionof the Holy Prophet-SW, in order togain awareness of Islam, he must notonly be given protection, but as soonas his mission is completed, he mustbe safely escorted back to his place sothat he may consider accepting Islamout of free will. This Injunction catersfor the ignorance of the non believersabout Islam and will be applicable onlywhen an infidel wishes to come to theIslamic State to learn about Islam. However, if an infidel wishes to join theMuslim community for reasons otherthan learning Islam, for instance tradeetc, it is entirely at the discretion of thebelievers to allow or refuse a visa

It is the State's responsibility tokeep an eye on the movements andactivities of those non Muslims, whohave been permitted into the IslamicState. As soon as their visa expires orthe purpose of the visit is achieved, they must be escorted back. Theymust not be allowed to stay in theIslamic State unnecessarily, unliketoday s Muslim States, which hire nonbelievers as advisors, and theirGovernments are run by theassistance and advice of the infidels. This is indeed a grave sin.

The above s ix Ayat havehighlighted the different categories ofthe infidels in terms of their conductand dealings. The rules for thetreatment to be extended to each havealso been spelled out. It is clearlyexplained that the establishment of an

Islamic State and its protectionagainst the intrigues of the infidels isthe only way to the rise of Islam. This isan eye-opener for those whoparticipate in some way intellectually, physically or financially to cause thewicked and ungodly people to rule theMuslims. This indeed is a seriousviolation. It is imperative for everyMuslim to contribute towards theestablishment and protection of anIslamic State. And the only way forachieving this goal is by making surethat the infidels and the ungodly havenothing to do with it.

By virtue of Revelation, it is aMakkan Surah but has been placedafter Surah Taubah in sequence. Itcontinues the same topic, as of SurahTaubah and answers the objectionsraised by the infidels over theProphethood of the Holy Prophet-SW.This Surah presents both logical aswell as historical answers. Firstly, itproves that Islam logically is the bestCode of Life for everyone, and is notmerely to be imposed on people.Secondly, it quotes historical evidenceof some of the preceding nations; howAllah-SWT blessed those who obeyedHim-SWT , and the end of those whoengaged in frivolous arguments, thusfailing to embrace Islam

Is it a matter of wonder to themankind that We-SWT should revealto a man among them saying: warnyou-SW the mankind, and bear thefaithful the glad tidings that theirs shallbe a sure footing with their Rabb-SWT? The infidels say that this is aplain sorcerer.(10:2)

The English Tafseer of Quran

Hajj -e-Akbar(The Greater Pilgrimage)

According to the Commentatorsthis term refers to the Hajjperformed annually because

'Umrah has been termed as Hajj-e-Asghar (the smaller Hajj). Theexpression embraces all the five daysof Hajj. The inference that the day at'Arafat falling on a Friday means Hajj-e-Akbar has no factual basis. However, it is true that when the HolyProphet-SW performed Hajj, the Dayat Arafat was a Friday. Although aFriday falling on the day at ‘Arafatcertainly has its own Barakah, it mustbe noted that in 9th Hijrah, the day at'Arafat was not a Friday. Still, theQuran terms it as the "Day of Hajj-e-Akbar"

According to Quran these five dayshave been dedicated for performingHajj. Therefore, 'Umrah is notpermitted in these days. As for theannulment of the treaties,Allaah-SWTand His-SWT Prophet-SW declarewithdrawal from all the treaties heldwith the infidels. When all the treatiesare being abolished, those groupswith whom there never had been anyTreaty ought to pay even greater heedto the following announcement. Thepolytheists of Makkah had themselvesviolated the treaties, which led to theconquest of Makkah and as such theydid not deserve any concession. Still,Islam treated them gracefully bygiving them a respite for four months.

As these were the Sacred Months soAllaah-SWT commanded that thesancti ty of these months bemaintained and the infidels be giventime to take a decision. Moreover, theyshould be allowed to move freelywithin the Islamic State if they wishedto during these four months.

However, they must realize that theonly route to peace is throughobedience to Allaah-SWT . Otherwisethey would ultimately perish alongwith their intrigues and shall fail topose a challenge to the Omnipotenceof Allaah-SWT . Besides, theirdestruction would not only be physicalin this world, but would take the form ofan eternal and shameful doom in theHereafter.

For those non believers who didnot violate their treaties with theMus l ims , no r ex t ended anyassistance to the enemy againstthem, it was enjoined that the treatieswith them must be honoured until thedate of expiry. Undoubtedly Allaah-SWT loves the righteous. Taqwa mustnot be lost sight of even in mattersinvolving treaties with the infidels. Nopretence must be used to abrogatesuch pacts, as this is contrary to aMuslim's integrity.

This Ayah granted respite to thetwo tribes of Bani Kinanah, namelyBani Dhamrah and Bani Madbah. Thetreaties with them were to behonoured until the remaining ninemonths of their validity. Besides, theywere informed well in time that the

treaties would not be renewed. Thenthere were other groups with whom, either the period of the treaty was notfixed or there was no treaty altogether. To them applied the injunctionsrevealed in the first two Ayat and theytoo got a respite for four months. It wasdeclared that if after the lapse of thisperiod the polytheists and the nonbelievers did not either accept Islam orquit Makkah, they would be dealt withruthlessly without any leniency, asreservations in slaying the deceitfulactually denote cowardice. Therefore, the treacherous must be slain orseized wherever found. The believersmust wage a full-fledged combatagainst them and apply all feasibletactics in warfare. Yet it must beremembered that a believer is not theenemy of any person but evil beliefsand conduct. Hence if the nonbelievers repent and accept Islam, forwhich the proof will be that they offerSalat and pay Zakat, then the Muslimsmust not stand in their way, becauseAllah-SWT, for sure, is the MostMerciful and Forgiving. Thus itbecomes evident that to obliterateoppression, the grandeur and themight of the tyrants must be shattered, without giving them any allowance. However, if they give up tyranny, which would imply repentance, theywill be treated without discrimination.Repentance demands a reformationof conduct in the first place; therefore, they must offer Salat and pay Zakat.Failure to do so would render the claimof embracing faith meaningless andthe fighting would not be called off. goal is to mimic the rosiness thatfollows a great workout (although thiscan be a lot for some people), and likeyou're glowing from within. This ofcourse means, no harsh edges!

Whether you're applying cream orpowder, use the right brush and startwith minimal amount of product andbuild up. A duo-fibre brush is great forthis because of its sheer delivery.

Contouring runs the most dangerof looking too obvious and fake.Precision and quantity is essential inthis application. My preferred way toapply a contour is to take the producton my brush and first tap it (lightlystroke it as if you were applying theproduct) on the inside of my wrist (orforearm). This technique not only

helps remove excess product from thebrush but also shows you what theshade will look like on your skin beforeyou apply it on your face (a great help-trust me!). Of course, you can avoidthe potential muddiness by notapplying contour at all and usinghighlighter alone to shape your face.My favorite contour brush is Inglot's36BJF for the cheekbones and NarsItaKabuki brush for cheekbones andnose. Highlighter should also beblended in properly so that there are novisible edges. Apply highlighter higherthan your blush, slightly overlapping toavoid the lines. Use a minimal amount-applying too much can make your faceappear flat. Blending for beginners

Here are a few pointers for thosewho are completely new to makeup

and blending…Always start with a moisturized (not

damp) face. Blending products will bemuch, much easier on well hydratedskin. Sometimes I even add a teeny bitof moisturizer to my foundation orconcealer. Never apply blush andcontour directly on the face. Alwaystest the product on the inside of yourarm. Certain routines require a skilledhand, which takes practice. Considerusing a spray. A facial mist like MacFix+ works magic. It helps you blendbetter because it can liquefy yourmakeup as it dries. Fix+ is a greatproduct to apply at the end of yourmakeup routine to help keep yourmakeup in place all day!

Do what works for you. These tipsare not meant to be hard and fast rules.Give them a try and see what worksbest for you!

The National Defense LieWe never said our nation did not

need arms or, wars.We got along with the military--the

purchase officers of the weaponry. We, the writers, got our cut.As children died of hunger or, for

the lack of a malaria pill in the rest ofthe country, we fed our children goodand bought them the malaria pill when

needed. We, the writers, never brought it

up in our writings that instead ofpurchasing weapons, we had tospend our 800-plus million dollars-a-year to cater to the hunger and healthof the 200 million people we have inour country.

We raised our children good as wekilled the poor children good.

The dead, the poor, the people, don't even know we did it.

Probably, even we, the writers, donot know we did it.

Chances are, if we did know it, wewould deny it.

However, the fact would remain. We don't need machine guns,

artillery, tanks, warships, warplanesor nuclear bombs.

We need food, education andhealth care.

The purchase officers are a bunchof liars.

National defense is a lie.We, the writers, are liars when we

say the fiction of national defense isnot a lie.

We have to tell the truth! We, the writers, the middle class,

the maggots of the sewer, thecriminals serving the dominant set ofcriminals, are murderers of millions,as of now, documented and certifiedby history.

The key to life is blending (OK.Maybe not your whole life, butmost of it!). Having naturally

gorgeous skin-smooth, even-toned,pore-less may be a challenge-butthere is a simple (and free!) way ofmaking it seem like you do….

This technique sounds easy, buteven for me it took some trial anderror. When I first started wearingmakeup, I would pile on a quarter-inchthick layer of EVERYTHING! Themore the better? No! No one looksgood in streaky, unblended makeup. The caked on skin is not onlyunappealing, it doesn't allow the skinto breathe. So here are a few tips to

getting your skin and makeup lookingand feeling a whole lot better.

The purpose of foundation is tomake your skin look radiant and even-toned. You don't want to look like youhave a mask on. To keep your skinlooking like skin, buff your foundation. This means applying your foundationin small circular motions and gentlypushing the product into the skin.Doing this will help the product meltinto the skin rather than sitting on top.Brushes and fingers can be your bestfriends when trying to get a flawlessface. Use brushes rather thansponges, since sponges can waste alot of product and also apply on morethan you need. There's a few differenttypes of brushes you can use: flatbrush, buffing brush, or a stipple brush.Fingers are also great for creams andliquids since your body heat warms the

product and helps it blend easily intothe skin. My favorite tool is the 122blending brush by Make Up Foreverand even more, my fingers! For liquidfoundations, I usually take a dime sizeamount on the top of my hand andapply it in areas needed. For creamand heavy coverage foundations, Itake it out on the back of my hand(more hygienic than dipping yourbrush in the compact) and use thebrush to apply it on my face. Then Itake a damp beauty blender spongeand press the product in. I love using awet beauty blender for foundationsbecause it really makes your skinappear magically luminous. Butremember, practice (and greatlighting) makes perfect.

Blush is my favorite product and it isalso the easiest product to make youlook instantly healthy and awake. The

Veteran actor and film makerKamal Haasan speaking atthe annual India Conference

of Harvard University in downtownBoston said democracy is a work inprogress which requires constantvigilance to safeguard it.

Kamal Haasan said freedom ofspeech cannot be taken for granted. He spoke of the Emergency and"voices silenced in plain sight for theworld to see". Democracy does notguarantee freedom of speech, CNNIBN quotes the actor saying at theBoston event.

Kamal Haasan has said he wasagainst the word "tolerance" as heunderlined that all communities needto "accept" each other to save thecountry from disintegration.

Haasan, during a "fireside chat"with students of the prestigiousHarvard University, said the countryhas already lost its two arms -Bangladesh and Pakistan - and allefforts should be made to maintainthe unity and integrity of the country.

Citing the example of a sleevelesssweater knit in green thread amongother colours, Haasan said, "It (India)is a sweater which is already knit withgreen thread (among other colourwools). You just can't pull (the greenthread). There is no sweater left then."

"We have already lost the sleevesof the sweater - Bangladesh and

Pakistan (have) gone. It 's asleeveless sweater So let's keep thesweater. It's getting cold," he saidamid applause from the young Indianstudents studying at the HarvardUniversi t y and other h ighereducational institutions aroundBoston including the MassachusettsInstitute of Technology.

Haasan's answer came inresponse to a question from one ofthe students who wanted to seek hisviews on voices of intolerance comingfrom some of the popular Bollywoodstars like Aamir Khan and ShahrukhKhan.

"I am against the word tolerance. You do not tolerate; you accept a

friend. Why should you tolerateeverything? It is a view either youaccept it or not accept it? Why do youtolerate?" Haasan asked.

"Intolerance is there because youare tolerating it. Do not tolerate.Accept the Muslims as your co-citizens. Do not tolerate them. Acceptthe Hindus (as your co-citizen). That'sthe problem of tolerant. Accept it(Muslims) because you are not goingto take away the green in your Indianflag," the popular Indian actor told theaudience.

The intolerance debate had ragedin India recently with many writers, artists and civil society membersexpressing alarm over the issuen

Seventy-one per cent of China'sarms exports go to Pakistan,Bangladesh and Burma.

The importers are among thepoorest countries on the planet.

Yes! This is probably thecheapest weaponry on sale.

And, the Chinese do not hesitateto duck the international anti-bribery,anti-kickback laws. This is a lucrative combination.

The Chinese manufacturers andmiddlemen make money and so dothe purchase officers in the importercountries.

The generals and the politicians ofthe importing countries get theircommission which may not be just10%.

The kickback, the commission canbe as high as 80%.

They pay the Chinese 5,000dollars for a thousand-dollar weaponand the difference is divvied up anddeposited in bank accounts in Dubai.

This system serves multiplepurposes.

I t personally enriches thepurchase officers.

Plus, i t dis-empowers thepopulations.

The rulers waste the money awayon weaponry to stop it from tricklingdown to the poor taxpayer in theshape of food, education, and healthcare.

Food, education, health care isempowerment.

The rulers remain empowered aslong as they stop the subjects fromgaining empowerment.

So, the tax-paying poor man'smoney wasted, lost, is an investmentfor the ruler.

The ruler steals as much as he canand destroys whatever is left so thatthe leftover never reaches the subjectand the subjec t never getsempowered to challenge the ruler.

The ruler keeps the subjectshungry, illiterate and sick and rules--comfortably.

It is not a conspiracy. It is a system. It is politics. It is a way of life.It is history. It is culture. As our purchase officers enrich

themselves, they rob the people of themoney meant to improve the lives ofthe taxpayers.

The people paid taxes for food, education, health and other things--toempower themselves.

The rulers usurped the collectedtaxes to buy weapons for personalenrichment and to keep the moneyfrom being used on people's needsthus stopping the poor from gettingempowerment.

The children of the poor wenthungry, got stunted--physically andmentally.

Many children of the poor got noeducation. The lucky ones got thediluted version of education devisedby the rulers who sent their ownchildren to select schools.

Abetter physique, a well-fed brain,a fully-nourished educated mind is anempowered mind--it is an empoweredman.

By not spending the collectedtaxes to feed, educate and keephealthy the population, the rulers robthe people of empowerment.

In turn, the rulers get moreempowered. The writers can break this cycle.

Traditionally, historically, at least, for the last one hundred years, especially in the East, the writers, mostly coming out of the middle class, had been duty-fully serving the rulingelite.

We, as a class, the writers, themiddle-class, have done good during

this century-long melee. Some of us are making millions.Others have fairly decent-paying

jobs or, pensions. Those who choose to stick to

ideals die in peace and poverty or,live--quiet, silent, in poverty.

But, we, the writing writers, rich orpoor, have to know and say that thevery idea of national defense is anelaborate fraud, a lie, a scheme todeprive the poor of empowerment bysimply blowing away the money onweapons to keep the poor poor, hungry, physically and mentallystunted, uneducated, ignorant, dis-empowered.

Talking about it is essential.Writing about it comes last.Knowing about it comes first. We, the writers, have to know that

buying arms for the so-called nationaldefense is a scam, a fraud, a lie.

We, the writers, had beenparticipating in this fraud for a while--making a living out of it--literally.

We, the writers, have to know thatwe had been doing it at the cost of realhuman lives--still-born babies ofmalnourished mothers, gross infant-mortality rate, gross mortality rateamong children and even amongadults from hunger and treatableailments and many other preventablefactors.

There are 18-year-old folkswalking into journalism trying to makea living, emulating us, to raise theirchildren.

We have to tell them how did wedo it? How exactly we shook handswith the evil? How did we surrender? How, exactly, we sold our souls? Howdid we manage to remain silent?

Do we have the strength to tellthese kids--these future journalists--that we did wrong? With a brood ofMBAs under our roof, we live with aguilty conscience glossed over withan imagined pride of making it fromthe ghetto to the mansion. At whatcost we achieved it?

We, the writers, remained silent. We wrote within the parameters

the editors set.

Why is that?

We have raised our children.

Pakistan is at a historiccrossroads on of its foreignpolicy today. And, whatever

path it takes will have long-termimpact on its soil.

Seemingly, so far, the state hasshown enough wisdom in sorting outcontradictions in its foreign policy. And, one can hope that this process ofself-correction will continue in futureas well.

Today’s Pakistan is confrontedwith two key questions in relation to itsforeign policy. And, both address theHOW of things, not their WHY.Advisor to PM Mr. Sartaj Aziz has toldthe parliament that it has not joinedthe Saudi-led military alliance. He hasalso explained that 1200 plusPakistani soldiers remain in SaudiArabia under a 1982 Pak-Saudibilateral military pact. Which, ofcourse, has nothing to do with thelatest Saudi-led multilateral militaryalliance. That’s good.

Mr. Aziz’s statement shows howPakistan is trying to practice its statedpolicy of equal friendly relationshipwith All Muslim states. The world nowknows this is HOW Pakistan willremain committed to its stated policyof non-interference in affairs of othersovereign states and this is how it willavoid being caught up in a regionalconflict which also has its roots inMuslim world’s Shia-Sunni divide.

Readers would recall that Mr.Aziz’s statement has come after PMNawaz Sharif and Gen Raheel Sharifvisited Riyadh and Tehran to convinceboth sides to reconsider theirpositions vis-a-vis the Saudi-ledmilitary alliance or at least avoid adirect confrontation.

The second key question forPakistan’s foreign policy is HOW thestate can handle its non-state actorswhose unscrupulous activities make itdifficult to remain at peace with its

neighbours, in particular, and withother nations in general.

That Pakistan has been hostingquadri lateral meetings of therepresentatives of the US, China,Afghanistan and itself for hammeringout an agreement between Talibanand the current Kabul regime showsits commitment in this regard. In sodoing, and even before that the stateof Pakistan has sent a clear signal toall non-state actors that the days ofgood or bad Taliban are over. And,Pakistani soil cannot be used anylonger by any of its non-state actors tocreate fuss across the border.

One should hope that the wayPakistan is handling these and othercrucial issues of foreign policy wouldhelp position it at a safer and higherplace in the new world order, at leastin relation to the new Asian Order thesigns of which are emerging clearly inevery passing day.

This new Asian Order isdominated by China, shared withsome reservations by India and stillsomewhat dictated by the US thatwants to make sure that the AsianOrder does notdeviate from thenew world order.P a k i s t a n a n dother countriesa r e j u s t t h efollowers of thenew Asian Order.B u t w h e t h e rs t rong -headedIranian and theArabs are alsogoing to join in or,if so, on whatconditions are stillu n c l e a r . T h eSaudi-led militaryalliance or theIranian opposition

to it is not going to make anydifference in the fact that the newAsian Order has emerged and is sureto run full course across, or in themost of,Asia 10-20 years.

In new Asian Order, as in the newworld order, things are being definedand decided in the light of aperspective fundamentally differentthan in the previous order. Religion istaking a back seat, a new worldculture (read corporate culture) isbeing introduced, and the economicmight married with futuristic vision isgoing to have a final say in the Asianand world order.

The multi-million dollar question ishow deeply our policy makers havegrasped this essence of the bigchange thatAsia, in particular, and theworld in general is bound to embrace.

Many of us live in the fantasy ofdemocracy that, in the new Asian andworld order, is acquiring a completelydifferent meaning than the popularslogan of “of the people, by thepeople, for the people.” That is whyconfusion prevails everywhere. And,Pakistan is no exceptionn

the South Side, near Englewood, theneighborhood on which filmmakerSpike Lee based Chi-Raq. FatherPfleger is a longtime social activistwho has spent years speaking outa ga i ns t gu n v io l en c e . T h eunemployment rate near St. Sabina isclose to 25 percent.

Father Pfleger often sharesweekend shooting statistics on hisFac ebook page , a long wi thcommentary. And whatever opinionyou have of Father Pfleger, he gets it.

While we fight against corruptpolice we must also fight againstthose who are part of this self-inflictedGenocide that is causing ourneighborhoods to live in Fear. Yes, wemust demand Jobs, Education,Economic Opportunity, Options andend this Easy Access to Guns, andyes we must Tell the Thousands ofChurches that will gather today topray that Faith without Works is stillDead.

Our family has a friend on theSouth Side who grew up in the RobertTaylor Homes, the now-demolishedhigh-rise public housing project of 28buildings that ran along the Dan RyanExpressway. He and his family havel ived in several South Sideneighborhoods, yet the only jobsavailable to him are far away.Currently he has a 2.5-hour commuteto a job in a northern suburb. He hasto ride a bus, two elevated trains, andanother bus to get to work.

But he says it’s worth it. He and hiswife, who also works, are scrapingtogether every penny they can (andno doubt creating student loan debtfor their son) to send their boy tocollege—he’s now in his junior year.“He had to go away to school,” ourfriend told us. “Two of his friends havealready been killed.”

He’s traveled to job interviews witheven longer commutes, all withcomplicated multiple modes of publictransportation. All of this is because ofthe lack of employment opportunity inhis own neighborhood. “All we’ve gotare mostly liquor stores and funeralparlors,” he’s told us.

“Want to curb violence? Give blackmen a job,” argues Dahleen Glantonin a column in the Chicago Tribune. “Ifyoung black men went to work every

day, they wouldn't be out in the streetskilling each other,” she writes, citingfigures from the Great Cities Institutereport.

It means that only about 1 in 2black men will be able to lift himself orhis children out of poverty. It meansthat nearly half of all black men inChicago could be on the path to a lifewithout a future, a journey that willlikely land them in the Cook CountyJail or the Cook County morgue. Itmeans that the fate of African-American men is being cemented intoa permanent underclass, a legacythey will likely pass on to theirchildren, their grandchildren and theirgreat-grandchildren.

And we wonder why Chicago hasan escalating problem of violence? …

A young man without a job gets tohang out on the corner day and night, whether the temperature is belowzero or near 100. He gets to dodgebullets every time he takes a stepoutside. He gets to hold the hand of abrother or a friend since grade schoolas that buddy takes his dying breath.

A young man with a job gets tohold his head high when he walksdown the street. When his childrenare afraid, he can look them in the eyeand tell them that everything is goingto be OK. And a man with a job gets tobelieve in theAmerican Dream — thatif he works hard, he will eventuallyearn the success he deserves.

You're wrong if you think themajority of black men would walkaway from a chance at that.

In its conclusion, the Great CitiesInstitute report describes “permanentscars” that lead to conditions that areboth a consequence and aprecipi ta t ing fac tor in youthunemployment.

This report clearly highlights thatyouth employment rates are tied toconditions in neighborhoods andcannot be seen as distinct from whatis happening in the neighborhoodsthemselves. The devastation ofunemployment, in turn, wreaks havocon the neighborhood.

Chicago is a great city. But howcan it truly be great, when this “tale oftwo cities” provides such starkcomparison in the employment

opportunities among young people? Here’s an economic opportunity

that will be happening soon. TheBarack Obama Presidential Center isslated to be built on the South Side. There are two locations underconsideration. One is Jackson Park, south of the Museum of Science andIndustry, a park that is well-used forsummertime picnics, basketballgames, and many programs in thefieldhouse and other facilities. Theother is Washington Park, near theDuSable Museum of Afr icanAmerican History, a park with feweramenities which is in a neighborhoodthat probably could use moredevelopment help than the JacksonPark site. Plus, it’s right near theGreen Line elevated train route, making it easy for people to get towork at the Obama library or any ofthe businesses that are bound to growaround the new site.

I sincerely hope that the Obamasand those responsible for making thesite selection will make neighborhoodeconomic development a key factor intheir final choicen

Chicago isn’t a safe or profitableplace for young men of color, especially on the West and

South sides. That in itself is nothingnew. But a new report on black youthunemployment, coupled with recentsky-high shooting and murder rates, doesn’t leave young black men withmany options. Nearly half of all blackmales in Chicago between the ages of20 and 24 are neither working norgetting an education.

The statistics also were dismal forthe city’s black teenagers. The joblessrate for black 16- to 19-year-olds was 88 percent.R a t e s f o r t h e s edemographic groups arehigher than state ornational rates, or thanrates in other large citiessuch as Los Angeles andNew York. And all ofC h i c a g o ’ s h i g h e s tunemployment rates forblack teens and youngadults were on the Westand South sides, just asthey are for older adults.

These fac ts andfigures are from a reporttitled Lost: The Crisis ofJobless and Out ofSchool Teens and YoungAdults in Chicago, Illinois, and the U.S. It’s from theGreat Cities Institute, aninitiative at the University of Illinois atChicago College of Urban Planningand Public Affairs. Its mission is to linkacademic resources with partners toaddress urban issues by providingresearch, policy analysis, andprogram development. The reportwas produced for the city’sAlternativeSchool Network in conjunction withthe Chicago Urban League.

The jobless numbers provide onlyhalf the story. The Chicago Tribune isamong those that keep track of thecity’s shootings and murders. Its

online tally, updated a few times perweek, shows daily, monthly, andannual totals of shootings andshooting deaths. So far in 2016,Chicago has had nearly 300 shootingvictims and more than 50 homicides(there were nearly 3,000 shootingvictims in 2015).

Now compare that map to a mapfrom the Chicago Department ofFamily & Support Services that showsu n e m p l o y m e n t r a t e s i nneighborhoods throughout the city.Notice the overlap. The areas with the

highest number of shootings are thecity’s poorest and most segregatedareas and the neighborhoods with thehighest unemployment rates.

It doesn’t take a genius to connectthe dots. Young black men with fewoptions are getting shot in highnumbers—and that’s in the middle ofthe winter. Usually these kinds oftotals are more common in thesummer, when hot weather drivespeople outside.

You can blame the high incidencein shootings on easy gun trafficking

from other states (true) or the“Ferguson effect” (not true). ChicagoMayor Rahm Emanuel went so far asto blame the uptick in shootings on ananti-police backlash, saying Chicagopolice officers have pulled back onenforcing the law—in essence, thatthat they were forced into a fetalposition.

.............................You can talk about illegal drugs,

fa i led schoo ls , malnutr i t ion, substandard housing, and a host ofother issues. There’s truth in all of

those factors. But thebiggest culprit is lack ofeconomic opportunity.

Chicago is no differentfrom many other urbana r e a s t h a t h a v eexperienced job flightfrom the inner city. Youus ed to s ee la r gefactories throughout thec i t y tha t em ploy edhundreds of workers.N o w, t h o s e s a m eworkplaces are shutteredor torn down. And notmuch has been left in theirplace.

During my commutingdays, I always rode theCTA Green Line along theWest Side. The worstsight was the old Brach’scandy factory, which

closed its doors in 2001 after 76 yearsof making StarBrite Mints and MilkMaid Caramels, leaving 1,100 peopleout of work. The company movedmost of its candy manufacturing toEurope.

For years, the old factory satempty, a broken shell of a once-thriving company. Worse, the 12-storybuilding was awash with gang signsand symbols. It was finally torn down.

Sisters of Charity hospital right there in central PA.The lobby of the hospital now proudly bears his name:Abdul Wahhab, MD. My dad is a Pakistani, Muslimimmigrant. He never once put God before Country, and never will. Me either, but you sure are making ithard. You oughtta maybe give him a call and talk tohim about what it means to be a real American, Mr.Trump. Someone needs to show you.

My father's contribution to this country came at atime when our nation was in a doctor crisis, thereweren't enough to serve our small town and my fathernever hesitated to share his skill in the most destitutecommunities. His contribution and the contributions ofso many immigrants are amazing-the most amongthese are the patriotic American legacy of firstgeneration kids they have raised here. We are gratefulbeyond what is reasonable for what this country didfor and means to us.

Without this sense of inclusion into our Americancommunities, you are essentially leaving our kids towonder if ISIS, a group that does welcome them, is a

good call. This is not regurgitated rhetoric, but something Ihave considered very carefully as a privileged, rebelliousteenager myself - I see how careless interaction with arude person could turn me. I'm not kidding about that.We need to embrace our immigrant Americans as myfather was - emboldened by the American Dream, hewanted nothing more than to have goodAmerican kids.Without our common bond as Americans, we are just atribal nation like the ones my parents left behind.Mr. Trump, my people know how to operate in tribalnations. Instead of teaching you how to be an American,my dad will gladly teach you how to tie a rope bed andmake a clay house. I'm worried that this is what willhappen to my country should your rhetoric take hold.

Talk to us. We are an educated, civilized people. We are immigrant families. We are

American. We want this conversation.

An Open Letter toDonald Trump

Dear Mr. Trump,I want to introduce you to an American story that you might relate to as

your constituents may as well. I am the daughter of a real American. Myfather was raised on a farm, born poor and was smart enough to raise thecapital to get through college and eventually medical school.

A small town guy, he settled with my mom and my sisters and me inwhat amounts to a village in the coal region of central PA. You might knowPottsville as the home of Yuengling Brewery, "America's OldestBrewery"…it's a small town with values that extend to the core of whatbeingAmerican is all about.

I remember my father getting visits from farmers, and others withbarter items that they would bring if they couldn't afford the surgicalprocedure needed. He was thrilled to be taken on a fishing trip, given afarm fresh eggs, or shown the little nuances and hikes along theAppalachian trail in exchange for the barter he could offer - anappendectomy, gall stone removal, even ingrown toenail (ick) repair.

My father never drove a foreign made car. Never. I myself was proud todrive a Ford all through the nineties in my father's footsteps. When thelarger big box chains moved into town, and the mom and pop storesbegan to suffer, he would insist that buying a hammer at Ace was worththe extra $0.50 if he had it.

A staunch 80's republican, he and my mother would go to the fancy$1,000 a plate dinners, and proudly display framed photos of Tom Ridgeand the Republican Arlen Specter in our parlor. I loved watching themwatch the debates and how they always seemed to understand how thiscountry worked. My mother, no slouch herself, has her Masters' ineconomics from SUNY at Albany. I understood the politics of Reagan atthe age of 11, and I was a believer in the American Dream, my father wasliving it. A self-made man, with gumption, courage, and an education. Aman so humble, I often heard him describe himself as a laborer. "Me, I sewfor a living". He would rather hear your interesting story.

When I entered college along with my two sisters, we became staunchfeminist liberals. At break, we'd sit around the big Thanksgiving table andhave spirited discussions among the family about birth control, the right tolife, euthanasia and just about every political battle there was. We are infact, a very typical all American family. Today, my sisters serve theircommunities by having become a doctor and an attorney.

My father raised me with such love forAmerica that when I got married, not a single item on my Macy's registry was made on foreign soil (and I'm abrat that loves Noritake china). My father taught me to put my moneywhere my mouth is. It irritated him greatly when children of privilege tookthis country's wealth for granted.

My father is retiring this year after 42 years of service in a Catholic
