Our August batches of cookies will be due on Monday, August 15 by 3:00 pm. New bakers are always welcome! Any questions can be directed to Donna O’Connor at 617-524-4396. Thank you!
How you can evangelize The first step in evangelizing is to pray for someone. Perhaps a co-worker is worried about someone who is sick, just take time to stop into church and pray for them; say a decade of the Rosary for the person. Maybe you simply listen to a friend’s worries. We do not understand how powerful and helpful it is to lend an ear to a worried friend. I imagine you are already doing this. Or is someone in your family worried about their children? Give them a call. Let the other person know your concern. These are the small first steps that each of us can take for God into human difficulties and worries. Remember we are the hands and the feet, the mouth and the ears of the Body of Christ. Do you find that something inside you pushes you forward into these situations? Do you speak up with kindness? This is the Holy Spirit at work in you. Do not neglect such promptings. Start to evangelize with a prayer for someone else. Msgr. Frank Kelley

OPERATION BACKPACK St. Vincent de Paul has a special request that we would like to ask you - our fellow parishioners - for help with. We are being asked to help with the purchase of 30 backpacks for children in our school that need them to transport and protect the tablets they are using for school work. Each backpack costs approximately $45. These will be used during the school year by those in need. So we are asking our parishioners that are able, to ‘sponsor a backpack’ and contribute $45 to St. Vincent de Paul. Or sponsor 1/2 of a backpack. Of course any contribution of any size will help a great deal. Please send or drop off any contribution to the rectory. Make checks payable to St. Vincent de Paul Society. Your help for those in need is always appre-ciated. St. Vincent de Paul Committee

Please offer a welcoming hand of faith to your
friend….
Has friend asked you about your Catholic faith? Often people are looking to be asked to come to church. Extend the invitation. A simple way you can strengthen our Sacred Heart parish is by your invitation to a friend or family member to join us. In the next months we will begin again our introduction to our Catholic faith. Do you know someone who has inquired of you about our parish? Extend to them an invitation to join us. Per-haps they want to return. Or maybe they want our faith. You are God’s inviter. Extend an invitation to our wonderful parish life. We begin in the fall, new classes of an intro-
duction to the Catholic faith. Extend an invitation.
Let me know of someone who has talked with you.
I’ll be glad to contact them and welcome them to our
parish. I need you reaching out to welcome new
members. Msgr. Frank Kelley

FEAST OF ASSUMPTION, Aug 15 This was the day when my grandmother wanted everyone in the water—ocean preferably—for Our Lady’s blessings. That was how we remembered the holy day of August 15. Needless to say, going to the beach in August was a great treat, no one complained. Early on in life, we remembered Our Lady’s feast day. Mass for the Feast day will be on the 15th of August in the morning at 8:30 am. Join us for this special feast of our lady’s Assumption. What does the Assumption mean? The Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven, often shortened to the Assump-tion and also known as the Falling Asleep of the Blessed Virgin Mary was the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life. The Catholic Church teaches as dogma that the Virgin
Mary "having completed the course of her earthly life, was
assumed body and soul into heavenly glory". This doctrine
was dogmatically defined by Pope Pius XII on November
1, 1950, in the apostolic constitution Munifictentissimus
Deus by exercising papal infallibility.
This year August 15th falls on a Monday, so as it is close to Sunday, we do not have an ‘obligation’ for Mass, however join us for the Mass on Monday, August 15th at 8:30 am. FHK

A Relationship With God Is it possible to be friends with God? The answer is yes. The Bible assures us that it is possible to have a close relationship with our creator. Isaiah 41:8 says that God called Abraham :my friend. Let us also look at the invitation that He gives us in James 4:8, in which it states: “Draw near to God and he will draw near to you.” Everything indicates that our God is calling us and is always waiting for us to start a rela-tionship with Him. Now, how can we get closer to Him if we cannot even see Him? There are different ways to do this, such as: ♦ Reading the Bible in order to get to know God ♦ Praying and speaking to Him ♦ Following the Commandments and doing what
He asks of us If you make the effort to get to know God well and build a relationship with Him, you will know what He asks of us and will be able to please Him in everything that you do. Your relationship with God will be strengthened and your faith will flourish. He will get closer to you and fill our life with blessings. You see, God is always around, but it is up to you to get close to Him. Don’t ignore God’s calling! Draw near Him and you will be amazed by His marvels. God is wait-ing for you to begin this relationship with Him. Are you ready to begin? Isabel Dinzey
August 20, Feast Day of St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1091-1153) Man of the century! Woman of the century! You see such terms applied to so many today— “golfer of the century,” “composer of the century,” “right tackle of the century”—that the line no long-er has any punch. But Western Europe's “man of the twelfth cen-tury,” without doubt or controversy, has to be Bernard of Clair-vaux. Adviser of popes, preacher of the Second Crusade, defend-er of the faith, healer of a schism, reformer of a monastic Order, Scripture scholar, theologian and eloquent preacher: any one of these titles would distinguish an ordinary man. Yet Bernard was all of these—and he still retained a burning desire to return to the hidden monastic life of his younger days. In the year 1111, at the age of 20, Bernard left his home to join
the monastic community of Cîteaux. His five brothers, two uncles
and some 30 young friends followed him into the monastery.
His ability as arbitrator and counselor became widely known.
More and more he was lured away from the monastery to settle
long-standing disputes. On several of these occasions he appar-
ently stepped on some sensitive toes in Rome. Bernard was com-
pletely dedicated to the primacy of the Roman See. It was Ber-
nard who intervened in a full-blown schism and settled it in favor
of the Roman pontiff against the antipope.
The Holy See prevailed on Bernard to preach the Second Crusade
throughout Europe. His eloquence was so overwhelming that a
great army was assembled and the success of the crusade seemed
assured. The ideals of the men and their leaders, however, were
not those of Abbot Bernard, and the project ended as a complete military and moral disaster.
Bernard felt responsible in some way for the degenerative effects of the crusade. This heavy burden possibly hastened his death, which came August 20, 1153.
Quote: “In dangers, in doubts, in difficulties, think of Mary, call upon Mary. Let not her name depart from your lips, never suffer it to leave your heart. And that you may more surely obtain the assistance of her prayer, neglect not to walk in her footsteps. With her for guide, you shall never go astray; while invoking her, you shall never lose heart; so long
as she is in your mind, you are safe from deception; while she holds your hand, you
cannot fall; under her protection you have nothing to fear; if she walks before you, you
shall not grow weary; if she shows you favor, you shall reach the goal” (St. Bernard).

XX DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO
1ra. Lectura: (Jeremías 38, 4-6 . 8-10) El profeta Jeremías
sufre persecución y violencia por su fidelidad a Dios;
2da.
