We snail mail it out once a year so you have all the important details (or directions to find the details) regarding 4-H camp, special 4-H activities, important project deadlines, judging events, and optional events at your fingertips. • Read the Family Hotline (this newsletter).

• Put important dates and deadlines on your family calendar.

• Know your club meeting dates/times, project requirements, weigh-in/tag-in dates, and judging dates.

• Work on your projects and complete your books.

• Camper Round-Up is May 9 from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM. After that, camp fee increases $20 to $150/camper. June 1 is the last day to register for camp. NO EARLY registrations accepted.

• Bring in your completed creative Writing Projects by July 1.

• Non-Market Livestock Fair Registration Forms and Home Grown Rabbit Certificates due by July 15.

• Think ahead! You will need lots of forms (available on website, from your advisor, or the office) and they may need your advisor’s signature.

LOOK FOR FAIR BOOKS IN JUNE

ROSS COUNTY ENDOWMENTInterest earned through the endowment has recently provided over $8,000 to the 4-H program. Interest has been used to provide four $1000 college scholarships, pay for camp counselors to attendcamp without expense, scholarships for adults and teens to attend the Ohio 4-H Conference, and assist in paying for the county award trips—Leadership Washington Focus, Citizenship Washington Focus, Leadership Camp and Camp Canopy.Need a great gift for graduation, birthday, anniversary, or memorial tributes for friends and family or how about recognizing those outstanding accomplishments like Grand Champion Animal? Engraved Gift Bricks are available with a donation of $100 to the Endowment. How about a brick with your club name on it? Clubs receive extra honor club points for Endowment Donations.Larger donations receive recognition in the Ross County Endowment Plaza and by the Ohio 4-H Foundation and The Ohio State University and may provide donors a chartable income tax deduction. Honor the Past, Celebrate the Present, Invest in the Future! Donate to the Ross County Endowment Fund.

EVENT CANCELLATIONS: If an event must be cancelled or postponed, we will notify the local radio station WKKJ/WBEX immediately. We will also post notifications on our website, Facebook, and make every effort to notify participants.

Ohio Special Needs CampA camp for children with disabilities will be held at Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp from July 5-7. Each camper will need to be accompanied by acaregiver. Shooting Sports CampAre you interested in archery, rifles, shotguns,living history, pistols, or hunter education? ThenOhio 4-H Shooting Education Camp is for you!Ohio 4-H Shooting Sports offers two shootingeducation camps each year. Junior Camp is June 28-30 for ages 9-12 and costs $225. Senior campis July 14-19 for ages 12-18 and costs $325. Bothcamps take place at Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp.Scholarships (typically $50 reimbursements) areavailable through the Ross County 4-H AdvisoryCommittee. Camp ScholarshipsScholarship Donations: Lend a hand and help send 4-H’ers who might not otherwise be able to attendby submitting a donation in the form of a charitable income tax deduction. A contribution in anyamount will help defray camp fees for members who qualify.

Scholarships Available: Need assistance for camp registration payment? Through donations andthe Ross County 4-H Committee funds, there are scholarships available to families that qualify.

4-H CAMPING OPPORTUNITIES

HALLOWEEN CAMPOUTSept. 27-29 – Ross County FairgroundsRegistration Deadline is September 1The 4-H Halloween Campout is an award winning Ross County 4-H only event. It is open only to 4-H members, volunteers, and their families. You must register to camp with a club unit in order to participate. If your advisor or your club does not participate in the event, you are allowed to camp with another club, if they have an advisor camping AND are willing to be responsible for you the entire time. The event features decorated fairgrounds and camp sites, pumpkin decorating, pumpkin chucking, pie eating, costume contests, games, crafts, and much more fall fun! We will also have wagon rides, haunted camp sites and trails, and fun with family and friends. Ask your club NOW about participating in this fun event! Cost is $50 per campsite which includes up to 5 people. There is a $5.00 fee for each additional person allowing for up to 10 people per campsite.NOTE: ANYONE planning to participate in the event (grandparents, etc.) MUST be included on the camping registration form. For security purposes, visitors will not be allowed to come watch trick or treating, game/contest participation, etc. if not pre-registered on the camp forms. REMINDER: ALL REGISTRATION WILL BE ONLINE AND ADVISORS WILL PAY WITH ONE CHECK AT THE MANDATORY MEETING—MORE INFO IN CAMPOUT PACKET AVAILABLE JULY 15, 2019.

COMMUNICATIONS CONTESTThere will be no local Communication Contest this year due to low enrollment the past several years. Youth are still encouraged to participate in District Health and Safety Speaking and Skit Competitions (Winners are eligible for State) and Communication Contests at the Ohio State Fair.

Health and Safety Speaking and Skit District Competition: July 2 at the Ohio 4-H Center and finalists there will compete at the Ohio State Fair. Ross County entries are due to the Extension Office and must be received no later than July 15. Entries will be judged during Ohio State Fair. Communication Days: Wednesday, July 31 and Thursday, August 1, 2019 at the Ohio State Fair. Entries must be made by the Extension Office in each county by July 22, 2019. More information can be found in the Ohio State Fair Non-Livestock Guidebook: http://go.osu.edu/communicationday

4-H Marketing Division: (Thank You Cards, Holiday Cards, Infomercial) Members do NOT accompany these entries to judging at the contest. 22nd Annual Scioto River Waterway Cleanup Plant Pride…Not Litter! Join the Chillicothe Green Team and clean the banks of the Scioto River Saturday, April 27th, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. Meet at the last parking lot to the right in the Chillicothe Annex. Teams will also go off site to clean the river banks at StrawserPark. Participants should wear old clothes, rubber boots, and bring gloves! The river cleanup will take place Rain or Shine, unless severe weather develops. If the weather is questionable, please listen to WKKJ radio station for cancellation of the event. There is NO RAIN DATE scheduled.

LIVESTOCK MOVE INALL LIVESTOCK MUST BE IN PLACE IN BARNS ON THE FAIRGROUNDS BY 4:00 PM ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 3, 2019. NO EXCEPTIONS.

DUNF FORMSAll market poultry, market steer, markethog, market lamb, market goat, dairygoat and dairy cattle livestock projectsmust complete Drug Use Notification Forms (DUNF) certifying their animalsare drug free.

Forms must be presented prior toweigh-in. Some species will be requiredto turn in at registration on Saturday. Incomplete forms = no show/no sale.

State laws require all market animals bedrug-free on the date of show, sale andslaughter. This includes residue fromdrugs and medicated feeds. If your animalis treated during the fair for any approvedreason, you must submit a new DUNF.

FAIR VETIf your animal needs a Vet during thefair, it is the exhibitor’s responsibility to contact and pay for a Vet’s service. All Vet’s must be approved by the fair vet on call before providing care.

*NEW* VET STALL TAGS/RELEASE TAGAt the vet check, exhibitors will be handed a neon sticker that will need to be added to their official name stall card. This is proof of having been checked by the Fair Vets at the entrance gate.

KEEPING IT CLEAN! Keeping your animal’s pen clean during the fair is your responsibility.It’s important for the health, safety and wellbeing of everyone – including youranimal. Here are some barn rules you need to know:•Clean animal pens out daily.•No tack, show boxes, feed, bedding, etc. will be permitted in any livestockpens. This allows better air movement. Special areas will be designated fortack in the hog, sheep, and goat barns. Make room for everyone – keep your things neat & compact.•Do not leave water buckets or pans in pens. It creates a mess. Instead,water your livestock several times each day.•Hogs should have a PVC waterer.•All stalls must be cleaned out by Sunday, August 11 at 12:00 noonor you will be ineligible to exhibit an animal the following year.

HEALTH REQUIREMENTS• At the fairgrounds, all livestock

must go through a veterinarian check at the gate. Animals should be displayed in a way as to be easily seen. Blankets and other coverings must be removed prior to the vet check.

• Any animal having problems such as ringworm or warts must be taken care of prior to fair. Health papers are only required for dogs coming to the Jr. Fair Dog Show.

• It is your responsibility to take good care of your animal prior to and during the fair. If your quality of care doesn’t meet Ross County Senior Fair Board standards, you will be dismissed and not allowed to exhibit livestock the following year.

STALLS, PENS & TACKNo stall/pen changes will be permitted without special permission granted from the specie Jr. Fair Superintendent. See rule under the Jr. Fair Livestock Rules in the Fair Book for details. This applies to designated club/aisle tack areas as well. NO tack is to be removed from the Sheep, Swine, or Goat Barns before 12 noon on the last Saturday of the fair.

NO VEHICLES/ TRUCKS/TRAILERS are to line up around the barns before 12 noon on the last Saturday. NO VEHICLES are to be between the goat/sheep barn and hog barn.

Spring Tag-In Goats, Sheep, and Hogs will be tagged in at the Ross County Fairgrounds May 4 from 8 AM -11 AM and May 6 from 5 PM to 8 PM.

Goats/Sheep will enter Gate 1 and proceed to the Beef Barn for tagging and weighing. Hogs will enter Gate 2 and proceed to the Show Arena for tagging. All species will exit Gate 3.

If you are bringing more than one species, order doesn’t matter. You will go through one specie tag-in and then circle out through the fairgrounds and get back in line for the next specie needed.

Please follow signs and be patient with our volunteer youth and adults.

Skillathon 2019Tuesday, July 9 @ Fairgrounds or Saturday, July 20 @ Fairgrounds*All animal exhibitors are required to participate in Skillathon in order to show/sell at the Ross County Jr. Fair 2019. There are TWO date options to attend. Horse Skillathon is held separately.**Plan to attend your club’s assigned times. Study guides are available online for every species-- every question that could be asked is covered on these study guides!

Skillathon AwardsCompletion- All exhibitors must participate in Skillathon in order to show/sell. No minimum score is required in order to show/sell but we do hope exhibitors try their best.Activity Voucher- All exhibitors who earn a 75% or better on their Skillathon will receive an “Activity Voucher” that can be cashed in during the fair in addition to their three “Project Vouchers.”

Premier SkillathonSame time as Animal Skillathon both daysTest your knowledge of all livestock species! This optional contest is open to youth ages 12-18 (as of January 1). Members will complete one *SENIOR* level station in every species Skillathon. This will test exhibitors’ general knowledge or application of knowledge of the 10 species listed below. There will be a booth by the Sale Arena to pick up a score card and exhibitors will proceed to rotate through every barn to complete the assigned stations. Winners: 1st place- $300, 2nd place $150, 3rd place- $75 provided ((SPONSOR NEEDED)). Get Your Premium $$$ at the FairThe Ross County Senior Fair Boarddistributes premium money to 4-H andFFA members for up to 3 projects eachand for top place in certain Junior Fairactivities. This money serves as a“thank you” for your participation andexhibition of projects at the fair. Here’s how Premiums work:▪ When your project is judged, you will

receive a project voucher, based onyour grade, to redeem at the fair foryour premium money.

▪ Vouchers will be void if your project isnot exhibited at the fair per projectrequirements in your club booth or miscellaneous area.

▪ Write your name and project on thevoucher and put it in a safe place.

▪ You may redeem a maximum of three (3)4-H Project Vouchers.

Ross County Jr. Livestock Judging ContestDate: August 7, 2019Time: Immediately following sheep exhibition Location: Large Animal Show Arena

Description: The General livestock judging contest will consist of 8 classes. The classes will include both breeding and market classes. Breeding classes may also require the evaluation of EPD’s. All contestants will be required to answer 5 questions on four classes they evaluate. Senior questions will be blind.

Rules:• There will be 2 divisions to the contest. Junior division (8-13 years old) Senior Division (14 years-18 years)

All ages are based on 4-H age. Awards will be given to each division. • A team will consist of 4 members where all 4 scores will be tabulated• No junior fair organization is limited to the number of teams they can enter• If you do not have a team, you may judge as an individual• A Committee of Judges will place all classes and answer the questions. A selection committee will select

all classes for the contest and decide which classes require questions.• All contestants must follow the Ross County dress code• All placings, cuts and question scores provided by official judges will be final. All team and individual

placings set by contest officials are final

Scoring:Scores will be based upon a possible score of 50 points for placing each class and 50 points for each set of questions answered. All contestants will judge 8 classes worth 400 points. All contestants will be required to answer 4 sets of 5 questions for a total of 200 points. Therefore, each contest will be worth 600 points

A. Teams and individuals will be ranked in order of total score (placings and questions) for the classes comprising each species or award category. The team or individual having the highest score will be declared the winner in each category of the contest.

B. If there is a tie for overall team or individual awards, the contestant or team with the highest overall questions score will be awarded the higher placing.

Cost: $5/pre-registered by July 31. $10 for late/day-of registration.
