C ause for a Cuppa

Hello again … not from Orlando, Florida but from the Holmescarr Centre. Though we have just been back 3 weeks now from our time in the States, it has seemed a life time. I was pleasantly “shell shocked” by some of the kind comments that have come towards myself or Lisa (lollipop lady at St. Michael’s). One said she was “inspired”. I hope that

meant she was inspired to do something … to adjust an action, attitude or thought.

Though I won’t dwell on this for long, so many of you have walked this path, are walking it or will, I do want share a bit of my continuing learning/experience. I also hope this will be helpful to you. After Mum’s passing, I now face something I only spoke with others about or read in a book … grief. Grief is very real. It is an emotion … a process … a letting go. All of us deal with it differently. One of the worst things that can happen with a family going through grief is that if one person gets upset because others do not deal with it in the same way as themselves.

For myself, I have realised my grief process actually started the day I discovered mum had incurable (apart from a God-given miracle) cancer. It then kicked into high gear 10 months ago when she said she decided to refuse any additional treatment as the chemo ceased being effective. Over time, I have noticed that emotions will appear at any time, often at surprising places. As I placed the tribute we wrote for mum on my bedroom wall, the tears came. You see, it was not meant to be on my wall.. it was for her. Other times it just hits me… driving… reading..

We need to allow ourselves to grieve. Grieving requires room and time. Remember, it is a process. We need to allow ourselves to experience the emotions of letting go as well. Men, unfortunately, struggle with this. Growing up in coal mining West Virginia (USA), it just wasn’t proper for men to cry. But I came to find out they were wrong. I was wrong. God created men with the need to express emotions as much as women.

But along with the grief, I am choosing to celebrate mum’s life this Christmas time. I have determined to pull out some of her favourite Christmas baking recipes. She always had delicious cookies piled up when we (4 of us) would invade the little house on Cherokee Drive. Hey, Chase, Lisa & I are gonna have some fun. If I can get Chad off the computer, he can join in as well!

T ornedale infant School enjoyed a successful open morning on Tues 15th November. Agencies from around the local community were invited to attend and take up the chance to explain their services to parents & carers.

There were a variety of groups present: Rossington Children’s Centre, The Dental Health team, Homestart, The Aiming High Business Unit, Rossington Ark and Crafts group, and Rossington Early Learners pre – school group.

Doncaster Schools Catering team put on a selection of taster foods which visitors enjoyed, including pork meatballs in tomato sauce with pasta, pork and stuffing pie, tomato bread and chicken goujons. There were also cupcakes apple flapjack and Tornedale children’s favourite “Chocolate Crunch.” As a result of the positive feed back schools catering received from parents they are looking into the possibility of providing school lunches for Nursery aged children in the future.

Visitors took up the chance to wander around school whilst lessons were in progress. Comments were made to staff about the lovely atmosphere in classrooms, and how friendly everyone was. Some parents commented that they wished their school had been so exciting to be in when they were children!

Mrs Wild the headteacher was pleased that the morning had provided a lovely opportunity for all parents to see how our school works with families. It also gave a good chance for those parents of children who are due to come to Tornedale to see school at work, and an opportunity for all parents to find out more about support they can access in the local community.

The school hopes to build on the success of the first open morning in the future.


M etal & Cable Thefts South Yorkshire Police are asking residents to

be more vigilant regarding metal and cable thefts.

Currently metal prices are very high and this is having a knock on effect with the criminal fraternity. We are experiencing more metal crime than ever before.

There is very much a danger element to unlawfully taking cables and types of metal from business units, so we ask that all residents who see any suspicious activity around this type of crime to report it to South Yorkshire Police on 101

If the crime is happening there and then please ring 999. We also ask that residents become vigilant around their own properties where there may be metal items about.

R ossington Main Cricket club Current and forthcoming events relating to Rossington Main Cricket Club. On Saturday 12th November Stewart Groves and Michael Richardson will be attending

the South Yorkshire Senior League presentation night at Rotherham Phoenix. Stewart will receive the Division 1 wicket keeping award and Michael the Division 4 bowling award. Well done to them both.

The Club presentation night will be held at Rossington Welfare on Friday 18th.November, more news on that in the next edition.

The Chigers Indoor team are enjoying an unbeaten run in the competition held at All Saints on Sunday evenings, having won four out of four.

Plans to improve the playing and social facilities down at the ground are ongoing and I will bring news of them as they happen.

R ossington Wheelers – December news As I mentioned in last months article one of the major events in the club’s calendar takes place in December – being the annual Rossington Wheelers Cycle X-mas event. The poster below includes the basic information but any further details can be obtained from the club

sources detailed below. It promises to be a good event for competitor and spectator alike and some top class riders have been testing themselves out in the earlier rounds of the league, so come down and support or better still ride!

Back into late October now and the club rounded off its main riding activities with a rapid 100miler over Humber Bridge. ‘The Curtain Call Century’ provided recent club addition Tony Hickey with his first century ride on his 60th birthday and 8 members were around the route and back in just over 6 hours riding time! Tony had ridden a London to Paris charity event earlier in the year as an almost novice and liked it that much he’s now a permanent figure in the club.

Another debutant and possibly a ‘ringer’ - Shaun Randall took the following days Hill Climb Trophy by just 1 second from Colin Taylor, pretty impressive the day after another maiden century but Shaun was later spotted buying timekeeper Paul Jones a huge cake at the cafe so the jury may be out yet on this one.....only joking, all integrity remains intact!

The club continues to expand healthily and has 3 times broken the 20 rider barrier on Sunday morning club runs this month!

The next planned ‘introductory ride’ as a stepping stone up to full club riding is 4th December and there will be plenty of extra curricular cycling on top of this over the festive period also that will be gentle for obvious reasons, so keep an eye on the forum at www.rossingtonwheelers.co.uk and the club facebook page or ask Les at Hudson Cycles on King Avenue if you prefer about upcoming rides or the club in general. “Merry Christmas and safe riding in 2012!”

Rossington Parish Council News

Thanks to the joint working of the Parish Council, the Neighbourhood team and the Welfare the Community Bonfire was a huge success. There is a large cost to providing this, £2,500 for the fireworks alone. But it was worth every penny and it was enjoyed by all.

The Parish Council also supported the Youth Club for the events held on Halloween, mischievous night and bonfire night. These helped in reducing potential ASB on these nights.

The joint Strategy and Regeneration committees have decided that the 'Triple A' committee (this will replace Rossington Forward) will consist of Chair John Gibson, Vice Chair John Adam, Carol Beaumont, Malc Clark and Bill Reynolds. Others may be seconded on as necessary. 'Triple A' stands for: Attitude, Action and Achievement. These represent the regeneration strategy that will be developed to improve the lot of Rossington. Their first task will be to develop a Neighbourhood Plane in line with DMBC's local development framework.

The Projects committee have instigated the Rossington in Bloom project, and will by next spring have all the plans and action points in place to brighten up the village. The committee will be working closely with DMBC Neighbourhood team to make this happen. The Christmas lights have gone up with an extra 6 on Queen Mary's. It is planned that in future years and as we can afford it that we buy more and more so that all parts of the village have lights. After a minor glitch, the Christmas Fayre will be bigger and better than ever. This year Santa will be a bit warmer, inside the Methodist Hall.

The Regeneration Committee recommended that a £5,000 budget should be for the Triple A committee. Discussions took place regarding the Allotment regarding Statutory status, the water usage, changing the rent year to November and having a allotment association. Problematic allotments were discussed and letters will be sent out to users and those on the waiting list.

The Strategy awarded grants to the Royal British Legion, Rossington Environmental Association, The Epilepsy Project, Rossington Youth Centre and to Doncaster South Boxing Club. The Section 137 budget for grants was proposed at £5,000. Section 137 grants are for projects that enhance Rossington.

George Sheldon, chairman of the Projects Committee, has arranged for the Steam and Vintage festival to be moved from Hayfield Lake to the Welfare. This will take place at the end of May.

At the Parish Council meeting held on Tuesday 8th November there was a bit of excitement; the Parish tricycle that had just been stolen was recovered by the Police along with two youths who were riding it. The Police made the youths, who had 'found' the tricycle, apologise to the Parish Council. Justice indeed. Thanks Police!

Rossington Councillor's Update Bankwood Play Area has been delayed due to the vandalism reported last month, the slide that was set on fire has had to be scrapped and a new one purchased. Any information on the culprits would be gratefully received. Please contact me if you know anything, anonymity guaranteed.

Thanks to Recycoal Ltd. who have sponsored the flowerbeds outside St Michaels. They do look nice. The other flowerbed around the village will be planted shortly.

Operate Anticipate was a success and ASB was kept to a minimum. Thanks to all involved.

Bonfire night at the Welfare was a huge success with a good firework display and yet again an excellent bonfire itself. Thanks to Steve Thomas and DMBC's Neighbourhood team. There were 500 more people there than the previous year, about 3,500 to 4,000 in total, a good turnout on a day of rain, and a bit of mud (it is November) didn't hurt anyone. The only disappointment for me was the lack of a hot chestnut stand!

The work to move the library to Holmescarr is about to start. The work should take about three weeks or so. This will be joined on to the Opportunity centre and will have all the facilities needed.

Council Officer Steve Lelew, of the Neighbourhood team, has received a GEM (going that extra mile) award for supporting the Doncaster South Boxing Centre. He has worked tirelessly over the last few months to get it going.

Radburn Tara group have recently secured £2500 for Drama with support from Council Officer Sally Dean, of the Neighbourhood team. Dave Atherton put together a funding application to St Leger Homes Estates Improvement Fund and was delighted with the news. The money will provide a number of Drama sessions at a much underused community facility for local children. Sessions started on Thursday 10 November and run for 6 Weeks. The times are 5 - 7pm at the Ragusa Centre, Radburn Road for ages 8 years onwards.

In preparation for this year's community bonfire, Council Officer Carley Smeaton-Smith, of the Neighbourhood team, organised a Guy Fawkes competition. Pheasant Bank School pupils unleashed their artistic flare by creating the life like guys. Three fantastic designs were chosen and winners received a £10 gift voucher. Well done to all who took part.

Owners of Rossington Hall, Gary and Michelle Gee are devastated that the restoration of their magnificent Victorian hall, which they hope to turn into a wedding venue next year, has been hampered by the actions of heartless thieves who have stolen a large amount of metal from the house and grounds.

Metal theft has been an ongoing problem in Doncaster and nationally for some time and is well reported. With the price of lead and copper particu-larly high at the moment it is no surprise that drain lids, copper earth strip and roof lead are the main losses, causing leaks and damage to newly renovated rooms. On this occasion, however, the thieves have also destroyed and taken original metal railing from around the lily pond, which is under renovation. The thieves may be happy with the scrap value they receive for the railing, but the replacement cost for the renovation project will be high indeed. Gary and Michelle are committed to bringing Rossington Hall back to its former glory, repairing original features and commissioning original style pieces where possible. Replacing the railing will mean taking casts from the small amount that is left and the cost of this alone is likely to cost several thousand pounds.

Regrettably it is particularly impactive on people when historical items are destroyed simply for their scrap value. It seems on this occasion the thieves were not happy just to take the metal and as well as breaking windows they stole a magnificent original stone feature from the walled garden, again only replaceable at substantial cost.

Rossington Main Football Club Well there were certainly no fireworks on display at the Football Club on November 5th. as both sides suffered 3-2 defeats after very impressive runs in their respective Leagues. The 2nd. team were losers for the first time this season when a late goal resulted in a League Cup defeat at Hatfield Main. They have a 100% record in the Premier Division however and hopefully this defeat will not set a trend The 1st team, after going unbeaten since September 24th, also lost by the odd goal in 5 at the hands of Worsbrough Bridge from Barnsley. This was only our 2nd defeat in the League this season and we still retain 5th spot in the League with games in hand. It was noticeable that this was undoubtedly the wettest day of the season so far and even the usually firm surface on the Welfare pitch was claggy and heavy after days of constant rain, a disadvantage to a side that strives to play flowing football. We shall have to adapt our style of play if we are to encounter a similar winter to previous years.

The U.19 and U.17 sides are both struggling for some consistency so far this season and after recording impressive opening wins in October they have both failed to capitalise on these successes.

Last month I stressed the point that we were very much an amateur Club and we were dependant on developing local players through the junior ranks to eventually represent the senior teams. The Club is dependant on local volunteers and is financed through the Welfare Lottery Draw, income from gate and refreshments on match days and the odd sponsorship deal. Expenditure can exceed income if we fail to get a reasonable attendance and so we are always grateful for sponsors to step forward to assist the running costs of the Club. This year both senior sides are kitted out in new home and away strips (the first time since 2008) and special thanks to Powertec Ltd. and Eagley Plastics Ltd. for their sponsorship of the 1st. team. The 2nd team have also acquired excellent support from Swimstars and Dolphins Swim Schools

There are other obvious expenditure issues annually as we pay rent and meet our own energy and water bills as well as the maintenance of the ground and transport costs, and it would sur-prise many how much League and Cup fees cost four teams per season. Naturally as a Club we would wish to thank our regular supporters who contribute towards these overheads through attending games and purchasing a raffle ticket and a half-time cuppa! It all helps to keep us afloat. Should any firm or business be interested in setting up any kind of sponsorship deal of any kind to assist the Club then please contact any official of the Club. In the past 2 years we have had numerous cancellations due to the inclement weather at this time of year and the heavy snow of last winter kept us inactive for 6 consecutive weeks through-out late November, the whole of December and early January. Should the weather be kind to us then we shall be hosting our first game over the festive period for four years when local rivals Askern Villa visit Oxford Street on Boxing Day. Traditionally, attendances would increase over the holiday period and we are hopeful that we can attract a good crowd on Dec. 26th. At the moment we are trying to arrange an 11-30am kick-off for this game and also considering an admission reduction in an attempt to encourage more people to come down to the ground to see what is on offer. At this present time therefore I can only confirm the following fixtures for December; Sat. Dec. 10th 1st v. Worksop Parramore 3-00p.m. Mon.Dec.26th 1st v. Askern Villa t.b.c. Times will be confirmed in the local press or displayed at the ground and in local establishments. Our remaining games in this League next month are away from home. On Dec. 3rd we travel to once-famous F.A. Cup giant-killers Emley and on the 17th we visit Hemsworth. The Club's 2nd team are very likely to be at home on these latter dates with a 2-00p.m. kick-off but their fixtures are published monthly and we shall not receive details until mid-November, which is beyond the deadline for this article. Incidentally 2 of our most recent goals were captured on video and can be seen on the website (both are quite impressive..) We must now get footage of the goals we concede and show them constantly to our defenders!

Carnival The Rossington Carnival in august this year was again a massive success. On behalf of the Rossington Community Carnival association we would like to give special thanks to all that were involved in making the carnival an enjoyable event, especially to Kevin Binks for his largely generous donation and sponsorship of the carnival and also to the parish council for their funding.

A n update from Tickhill & District Lions

First of all a huge thank you for all who attended the bonfire & fireworks night at The Oak on the 5th of November. The night was a tremendous success and with an estimated 1000+ people coming along it was by far our busiest bonfire event yet.

A quick reminder about our annual Grand Christmas Draw which as usual has a host of fantastic prizes; 1st prize: Kindle 3G e-reader, 2nd prize: Wilfreda city break for two, 3rd prize: £100 Food Hamper, 4th prize: £100 fuel voucher, 5th prize: 15lb Turkey. Plus there are lots of other prizes too! Tickets are on sale in many shops around the area (look out for the posters) and the draw will be made at 9pm on the 13th of December at The Travelers’ Rest pub in Tickhill. Please feel free to come along to the draw and don’t leave it too late to buy your tickets! We’re also selling ‘Magic Reindeer Food’ for your little ones to leave out for Santa’s reindeer on Christmas Eve, and again this is on sale in local shops. Rossington Under 9’s Junior Football Team (pictured) was recently selected to receive a sponsored Santander football strip courtesy of their local Santander Agency in Rossington. Isolex Financial Ltd, who also has an agency in Tickhill, donated the kit as part of a new Community Sponsorship Programme launched by Santander. The Manager of the agencies Michelle Newton said “we pride ourselves on delivering a first class banking service to our local residents and it was a real pleasure to be able to provide the local team with a new strip and support them on their fun day.

Derek Peckett, Rossington’s U9’s Manager was grateful to receive the kit and equipment and said the boys loved the kit and were very thankful for the support.
