The Rotary Club of Singapore established The Entrepreneur of the Year Award (EYA) 29 years ago – and it has come a long way since those modest beginnings. Tonight, along with our fantastic partner, ASME, the Award is very proud to celebrate the achievements of the 17 Winners of 2017, and to continue to inspire entrepreneurship in Singapore. The EYA prides itself for its rigorous rounds of judging to identify entrepreneurs that have truly outdone themselves. With the theme of “Transform; Reinvent” this year, the Award has identified visionary business leaders that have transformed their businesses to seize new markets, develop new products and achieve greater growth. in Singapore, the World and certainly Rotary. For everyone here tonight, as you further contribute to society in the coming years through your respective CSR programmes, I openly declare that, at Rotary, we will always be a happy and supportive partner to you – just call! (actually, my millennium staff tell me you should just Whatsapp!) The journey of enterprise requires great passion and commitment, and is a continuous learning process. Many entrepreneurs, when they first start out are like “raw diamonds” – they may be newly discovered or mined, but they are ambitious with a clear sharp vision to create their own mark of success. Given heat, pressure and the right opportunities, these “lumps of carbon” with the right exposure, experience and industrial hard work – with cutting and polishing - emerge as glittering business leaders. As they say No heat, No pressure, No diamond! To emphasize my diamond analogy, Messrs Kavin Ng and Eric Lim of Richz Technology are great examples who have shown passion and determination to excel and shine. They have enjoyed success in their niche business of producing lab-grown diamonds. Using an innovative machine, the diamonds that are created are identical to high quality mined diamonds and are more eco-friendly, sustainable and socially responsible. Music to my ears. Just like all the Winners and leaders here this evening, businesswomen and men today should be constantly challenging themselves to look for new markets and products in the current competitive business environment. The EYA looks forward, in the coming years, to honour more business leaders, be they emerging or established entrepreneurs, who have shown outstanding performance in their respective industry fields. Before I am forcibly removed from the stage for overrunning my time, on behalf of the Rotary Club of Singapore and the Award, I would like to thank our main sponsor OCBC Bank for their continued support of the EYA. Interact Coordinating Committee Meeting – 15.11.17

The Interact Coordinating Committee had a good meeting on 15 November 2017 at Hwa Chong Institution. The meeting kicked off with "ice-breaker" games. The games, though alien to us Rotarians were refreshing. The presentations by the clubs were well thought out, outlining the work done, their plans and challenges faced. Lastly, the support was tremendous. More than 80 participants from 15 schools and clubs, our Youth Service Committee and Youth Corps Singapore attended the meeting. Overall, a very well organised meeting by the Interactors! The Interact clubs represented were from: Anderson Junior College, Angle-Chinese School Independent, Catholic Junior College, Hwa Chong Institution, Raffles Institution (Yrs 1-4, Yrs 5-6), Victoria Junior College, Bukit Gombak Eagles, Pioneer Junior College, Anglo Chinese Junior College, SJI International, Greendale Secondary, Yishun Junior College, Evergreen Secondary School and National Junior College.

Philippine Medical & Dental Mission 16 – 22 January 2018 By PP Perlita Tiro We invite all Rotarians to join us in this Rotary year's medical and dental mission in the Philippines, which will consist of three segments to be conducted in Metro Manila and Cauayan, Isabela:

1. Women's Health, to be headed by PP Dr Yap Lip Kee, which will primarily consist of a Half Day Lecture series (International and local doctors) on hysteroscopy and laparoscopy, with operative demonstrations. He will also participate in a screening program and using a Zeiss colposcopy machine.

2. Dental, to be headed by PP Dr Oliver Hennedige, and assisted by dentists in both Singapore and Philippines.

3. Eyecare, to be headed by ISC Chair Dr Rupesh Agarwal. In view of the very limited role a foreign doctor or eye specialist can play in the Philippines, Dr Rupesh has decided to set up a "collaborative and feasible and practical set up" between Philippines and Singapore, by way of a regular internet and tele-consultation session on a regular basis for complex patients, starting January 20th.

We shall work with our sister Clubs, RC Rizal West for the Metro Manila mission and RC Cauayan for the Cauayan. We shall spend two nights in Manila and three nights in Cauayan. At the invitation of President Keith, we may spend another optional night in San Narciso, Zambales. After completion of the Cauayan trip on 21 January, we shall return to Manila then proceed to Singapore at the evening. Those who wish to extend to the fourth purpose of the trip may extend another evening in Zambawood resort, courtesy of President Keith and his First Lady Rachel. President Keith will drive us from Manila to Zambawood and the following day, visit the "End Polio Tree" to which Rotarians have donated, as well as the venue for the proposed training school in the town area. This is a proposed Zambales Global Grant for the training of facilitators and teachers for the autistic children. They will be driven back to Manila by President Keith, in time to catch the evening flight back to Singapore. Those who are interested in joining the mission are requested to contact PP Perlita at [email protected] or Rtn Deepti at [email protected] to indicate your interest and make direct flight bookings as appropriate. We are still compiling alternatives and shall provide you with the suggested flights to take, as soon as they are finalised. We shall make the hotel bookings in Manila, on your behalf. Accommodation in Cauayan will be arranged by RC Cauayan.

President Keith extended a warm welcome to members and Guest Speaker, Ms Ayesha Siddiqua Shelley. Toastmaster, Rtn Stuart Pearce called on members to join him in a toast to Rotary International. Subsequently, members were informed that the Speaker, Ms Ayesha Siddiqua Shelley was in fact a member of the E-Club of 3310. President Keith then invited members to join him in raising a toast to the E-Club of 3310. Later in the meeting, the Club welcomed visiting Rtns Hasan Md Monoaroul and Hiromitsu Naruse.

ERRATA In issue no. 18 – Page 6, New Member’s Induction – 2nd paragraph should read as follows: In his introduction, PDG Philbert noted that there were four sets of two-generations of Rotarians including himself, as his father was a member of the Club. NOTICE OF NOMINATIONS President Keith announced that Notice of Nominations was circulated on 1 November 2017 for nominations for the position of President for Rotary Year 2019/2020. He added that nominations closed at 12.00pm on 29 November 2017. He was pleased to advised that one nomination was received for the abovementioned post for Rtn Deepak Nagrani. Formal adoption of the nomination will take place at the Club’s Annual General Meeting at the weekly meeting on Wednesday, 13 December 2017. CSC VISION FOR ALL PROJECT President Keith advised on behalf of Community Service Committee (CSC) Director Rtn See Mee Lee that the project was successfully completed on 26 November 2017, and warmly thanked members for their support in making the event meaningful for all. President Keith also presented the tokens of appreciation which were received from Ms Low Yen Ling, the Mayor of South West District.

HEARTIEST CONGRATULATIONS! President Keith was pleased to advise that Honorary Member (HM) PP Koh Choon Hui received the Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer Award, the highest accolade for volunteering from the Ministry of Social and Family Development. The Award recognises PP Choon Hui’s 40-year dedication with Singapore Children’s Society in helping over 70,000 children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Our heartiest congratulations to HM PP Choon Hui!

[email protected] President Keith called on Rtn Dr Irina Francken who was pleased to be able to introduce Rtn Ayesha Siddiqua Shelley whom she has known since 2014. She noted that Rtn Ayesha is a diplomat and founder / head of the advisory committee of the Blue Sky Charitable Foundation (BSCF), a non-profit organization operating to help disadvantaged breast cancer patients in Bangladeshestablish a supportive eco-system that enhance the individual’s recovery. She added that Rtn Ayesha is also an author who writes poetry, as well as a breast cancer survivor herself.

Rtn. Ayesha gave an overview of BSCF’s mission and vision to eradicate cancer and minimise its impact by preventing cancer and saving lives, diminishing suffering and enhancing the quality of life of those living with cancer in Bangladesh and its region. She noted that 40,000 Bangladeshi women are affected with breast cancer each year and it accounts for 69% of cancer deaths in women. Rtn Ayesha shared that she too lost her elder sister to cancer.

Rtn Ayesha highlighted BSCF’s plans to arrange awareness programmes; to establish a world ranked cancer hospital and research centre asa well as to start a humanitarian assistance fund to help deserving breast cancer patients with major financial difficulties in collaboration with other humanitarian organizations. President Keith invited PP Perlita Tiro to extend the Club’s vote of thanks to Rtn Ayesha. PP Perlita warmly thanked Rtn Ayesha for

sharing her personal ordeal with breast cancer and that of her family.

Closing Remarks: President Keith noted that there were many calls for resources, one of which was the enfolding volcanic disaster in Bali, instituted by the District. He called on members for their donations and pledges. He also encouraged members’ attendance at next week’s meeting. President Keith advised that the programme involves Club’s Rotaractors who would be conducting healthscreening, promotion of their projects and assistance to members with training and downloading of the ClubRunner admin system.
