Mark and his son, Eric with Kilimanjaro behind them.

At over 19,000 feet above sea level, ShelterBox USA supporter, Mark Dyer looked out at theincredible view from the top of the highest freestanding mountain in the world and was proud hemade the journey with his 17 year old son, Eric. The Dyers, residents of Elmhurst, IL, were joinedby 10 other ShelterBox Response Team members, the volunteers that deliver aid to disastersurvivors around the world, to raise funds and awareness for the organization. The goal was to raise a dollar for every foot of elevation of the Tanzanian mountain. By the end oftheir epic climb, the team exceeded their mark by raising more than $20,000. ShelterBox is an international relief organization which provides shelter, warmth and comfort withdignity to disaster survivors worldwide. Each iconic green box delivered/deployed/provided containsa family tent, means to purify water, a cook stove, a kitchen set, mosquito nets, tools and otheressentials. "To be able to share this experience with my son and the ShelterBox crew was amazing," said Dyerwho deployed to Africa twice in the last two years to deliver ShelterBoxes to disaster survivors. ShelterBox has provided shelter to more than 110,000 people and has responded to 38 disasters inAfrica alone while providing shelter for more than a million people worldwide in its 10-year history. Before their ascent, the team spent a couple of days in the town of Moshi at the base of themountain acclimatizing to conditions. During that time they worked with a local school handing outnew textbooks bought with some of the funds raised in honor of the climb.

Eric delivers a ShelterBox Children's Activity Pack to a student.

"The books the children were using were so tattered, they were almost unusable," said Dyer. "The math and English books along with the ShelterBox children's activity pack will go a long way inthat community. We even brought soccer balls and proceeded to lose at a game of football. It wasa great day."Dyer and his son are no strangers to service. Both father and son received their Eagle Scout Awardand have a dedication to helping others. The funds raised by the team mean that more than 20 ShelterBoxes will be sent in response to adisaster. The full team of climbers were as follows: Sharon O' Keefe and Chris Donald (bothNewquay, England) Sean Jarvis and Steve Blunsdon (both St Agnes, England) Phil Duloy (Falmouth,England) Lizzie Treglown (Helston, England) Richard Mcsweeney (Hayle, England) Marc and EmilyEccles (both Truro, England) Dave Achtemichuk (Canada) Mark and Eric Dyer (USA).

6440 ShelterBox team top national fundraisersby Reese Mates

Service Above Self: Six Rotarians LeadHumanitarian Fund for ShelterBox USA

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. , August 30, 2010 - A team of volunteers from the greater Chicago area were amongthe top fundraisers in 2009-2010 securing shelter and life-saving equipment for more than 305 families displacedby a disaster - placing this team as the leading team in the USA and one of the top 10 teams in the world.

The team consists of 6 people. Representatives Donna Gulley, Dick Hattan, Andrew Kuby, Reese Mates, RossSpencer and Cynthia Tomusiak have taken the ShelterBox message well beyond their home Rotary District.

With the help of this team ShelterBox has become the largest Rotary Club project in the world and the premier aidorganization to immediately address the need for dignified shelter following a disaster.

In the last ten years, ShelterBox has firmly established itself at the forefront of international disaster relief, providing aid to survivors of over 140 disasters in more than 70 countries. In the last few months alone,ShelterBox has distributed aid to more than a quarter of a million people displaced after the Haiti earthquakewhich devastated the island nation. Concurrent to the Haiti response, ShelterBox has responded to 13 otherdisasters since January 2010 including the Pakistan and Brazil floods, earthquakes in Chile and Mexico and avolcano eruption in Guatemala.

The charity sends aid in the form of iconic green ShelterBoxes which contain equipment essential to survival such

as a family tent, mosquito nets, cooking equipment, water purification tools and a tool set among other items.

This past year, Gulley and her team spearheaded the first Rotary District Matching grant, a task which came tofruition two months after the devastating Haiti earthquake. The grant was responsible for $122,000 or 122ShelterBoxes.

" Every time a box is sponsored, I sleep better knowing up to ten more people have shelter, warmth, dignity andcomfort," said Gulley. "Multiply that time 122 and you will have an inkling of how I felt!"

Gulley and the rest of her team worked hard to promote ShelterBox at Rotary Club meetings, public fairs, schoolsand during parades.

" It takes a village, or a district, for our team to be identified as the top fundraising team for ShelterBox. It isn't me,Andy Kuby, or Ross Spencer that made this happen, it is all of the great Rotarians in the district that helped toprovide shelter for more than 305 families," said Gulley.

When asked, Gulley describes her fellow teammates with pride. According to Gulley, Kuby not only keeps theteam organized but also fabricates anything from a parade display to a miniature cart to keep the team fromlugging all of the box's weight. Spencer is also a passionate member of the team who, even though he wintered inHilton Head last year, was still very active in the Chicago area for ShelterBox. While in Hilton Head, however,Spencer managed to recruit and train three new representatives for ShelterBox where there were no volunteersbefore.

" It is through the work of individuals and teams such as this that ShelterBox is able to maintain a stock of boxesenabling them to respond to disaster immediately after it strikes," said Veronica Brandon Miller, executive directorfor ShelterBox USA. "ShelterBox extends its sincere thanks to these individuals for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to this project. "
