Rotary Making a Difference President’s update Changeover dinner What a great night out we had last Thursday night with partners, dignitaries and associates at our changeover dinner at Big Hill Vineyard. We celebrated our achievements in the 2016-17 Rotary year, and introduced the 2017-18 Board. Emily Mudge was smooth as silk as our MC, and masterfully managed proceedings to a minute perfect conclusion. Chris Morley not only entertained us with his professional renditions of his ‘father’s record collection’, but also made a brief but inspirational presentation on his work and plans as a Missionary working with at risk children in Thailand. Thanks to Rod Spitty for ‘spotting’ Chris for us. We were privileged to be joined by distinguished guests District Governor Peter Frueh and Anne Frueh, Assistant Governor Cliff Downey and Maree Downey, and City of Greater Bendigo Mayor Cr Margaret O’Rourke. DG Peter spoke on future directions for Rotary in the context of Ian Riseley’s ‘Making a Difference’ theme, and the imperative of telling our story and driving recruitment. Cr Margaret O’Rourke provided insights into the relationships between the Council and community and service groups, and the priority the Council is giving to engaging effectively. I also appreciated having representatives from the cluster clubs along to celebrate with us. A highlight of the night was the naming of Tony Plant as a Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of his meritorious service. The Board resolved that Tony is a worthy recipient of a PHF recognition due to his service achievements over many years, culminating in his last two years as Club President. As President, he not only provided strong leadership and direction to the Board and the Club, but was a real dynamo in initiating and delivering on the ground, and fostering partnerships within the cluster and the community. Past President Ken Briggs OAM spoke eloquently about Tony’s achievements and attributes (Glenis told me she put the polish on the speech!), and District Governor Peter Frueh made the presentation. Congratulations Tony well deserved. The club was delighted when District Governor Peter Frueh awarded to Tony a District Citation for achievements of the Club against goals in 2016-17. A well deserved pat on the back for what the Club Members achieved under the leadership of Tony and his Board. Rotary – Making a Difference

President’s update Changeover dinner What a great night out we had last Thursday night with partners, dignitaries and associates at our changeover dinner at Big Hill Vineyard. Ian Ellis helped to recognise our Club traditions by bringing along a framed collection from the Club charter year (and we had fun picking which of the charter members in the photo was Bill Ashman), and Club Historian Bill Ashman brought the latest history scrap book. Great to see the club celebrating its proud history. The traditional presentation of the Max Ellis Award – the Club’s Presidential award ‘for dedicated and selfless service by a non-Board member’ (also known as the best and fairest award), could not be made in person at the Changeover Dinner as the recipients could not attend. Tony Plant again made a joint award, this time to relatively new members Clive and Jennie Hughes, at the 22 June 2017 meeting, as you would have noted in our last SignPost. Congratulations Clive and Jennie, you are providing great service to the club. Next week At our meeting next week Directors will convene their committees over dinner and finalise your plans for the coming year, and work out what is required to make them happen. There will be a Board meeting to follow. I will be attending a few more changeover dinners in the cluster. It is great to join with our partner clubs in their celebrations, and in particular I am enjoying building on the great connections the incoming Presidents have made through the President Elect training program led by Past District Governor Julie Mason. I will also be joining Greg Penno from the Rotary Club of Bendigo Strathdale on the regular Rotary slot on Phoenix Community Radio 106.7FM at 9.30am next Wednesday. See if you can find it on the dial! Coming up We will be supporting the Ironbark Gully Friends Group on National Tree Day on Sunday 30 July by planting trees and shrubs, and providing a community service BBQ for the community members who participate on the day. Please set this day aside in your diary if you can attend. More details later. Cheers Bernie Young -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Victoria Welsh Choir Concert

Ulumbarra Theatre and the Rotary Club of Bendigo South present The Victoria Welsh Choir on Sunday September 10 at Ulumbarra Theatre. The event is a fundraiser to support the provision of additional theatre facilities, as well as providing bursaries for talented local musical artists. The Victoria Welsh choir is well known by Bendigo concert goers and, with their beautiful singing in four part male harmony, and their entertaining and humorous concert presentations, is always a favorite event. For this concert, the choir will be joined by principal guest artist Silvie Paladino as well as Bendigo Senior Secondary College Musician of the Year award winners for the past 2 years, Aidan Purdy and Deanna Jerman. Silvie Paladino is one of Australia’s most versatile and talented musical theatre entertainers. She has had leading roles in many Australian productions, as well as performing at notable events in Europe and America. She is also well known as a regular in Nine Networks “Carols by Candlelight”. Aidan Purdy is a classical tuba player currently pursuing further musical training in Adelaide. Deanna Jerman is a vocalist currently pursuing further musical training in Melbourne. Tickets are now available at the Capital Theatre booking office, by phone on 54346100 or on line at www.gotix.com.au. Tickets will be on sale at 9.15am, Wednesday May 3.

Don’t miss out! Like a social outing PLUS enjoy some delightful music? Our Club has a couple of tickets left for premium seats at a reduced cost for the Silvie Paladino and Victorian Welsh Choir concert on 10 September. Be quick to advantage of this special limited offer!! See Greg on Thursday evening for a ticket. Better hurryyyyyy…………
