Sponsoring Education for Children in Indonesia Our club every year sponsors five orphaned children in Indonesia through RWCS (Rotary World Community Services). Project #85 AP 030/06 provides Education for Children in Indonesia at homes run by The Salvation Army on the Islands of Bali, Java, Sumartra and Sulewesi and at Ambon and Kalamantan. A donation of $110 provides education for the child we sponsor. Of every $ 110 an amount of $10 is taken out to provide a Birthday and Christmas present for the Student, and these presents are usually items of clothing. Donations are received by The Salvation Army from a number

of countries such as Holland, Norway, Sweden, Canada, England, and of course Australia. Our Donation is sent in total to the Salvation Army Head Quarters at Bandung and assists to cover the cost of School books, School uniforms and School fees. We have just been informed that one of our students has finished their education and has left the program and we have been provided a new student. Her name is Novia Eliezer Kinanti (pictured) and her home is Turen Hospital.

Joke of the Week

A man is waiting for his wife to give birth. The doctor comes in and informs him that his son was born without torso, arms or legs. The son is just a head! But the father loves his son and raises him as well as he can with love and compassion. After 18 years the son is now old enough for his first drink. Dad takes him to the bar, tearfully tells the son he is proud of him and orders up the biggest, strongest drink for his boy. With all the bar patrons looking on curiously and the bartender shaking his head in disbelief, the boy

takes his first sip of alcohol. Swoosh! Plop! A torso pops out! The bar is dead silent, then bursts into

whoops of joy. The father, shocked, begs his son to drink again. The patrons chant, “Take another drink!” The bartender continues to shake his head in dismay as the boy drinks again.

Swoosh! Plop! Two arms pop out. The bar goes wild. The father, crying and wailing, begs his son to drink again. The patrons chant, “Take another drink, take another drink.” The bartender ignores the whole affair and goes back to polishing glasses, shaking his head, clearly unimpressed by the amazing scenes. By now the boy is getting tipsy, but with his new hands he reaches down, grabs his drink and guzzles the last of it.

Plop! Swoosh! Two legs pop out. The bar is in chaos. The father falls to his knees and tearfully thanks God. The boy stands up on his new legs and stumbles to the left, then staggers to the right through the door and into the street, where a truck runs over him and kills him instantly. The bar falls silent. The father moans in grief. The bartender sighs and says, “He should’ve quit while he was a head”.

Rotary International News

Time to think about February 2010

With the first quarter of the 2009/2010 Rotary year gone, clubs and Districts “down under” are reminded of the need to focus on February 2010 as the special time for

vital community promotion of Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign and the Gates

Challenge. At the 2009 International Assembly in San Diego, USA, Microsoft Founder Bill Gates committed the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to an additional $US255 million to Rotary’s Polio eradication campaign.

The eradication of polio is Rotary’s pledge to the children of the world and this amazing gift followed the Gates Foundation’s original pledge of $US100 million 12 months earlier to “kick start” the drive for the world to End Polio Now! Rotary International agreed to raise $US100 million to match the original gift and, in February, increased the pledge on behalf of clubs and Districts to $US200 million – to be raised by June 30, 2012. Rotary clubs and Districts around the world have responded magnificently and as of September had raised $US93 million.

Senior leaders in New Zealand and Australian-based Rotary Districts are following the lead of the RI Public Image Resource Group and promoting the week surrounding February 23 (Rotary’s birthday), 2010, as the

target for special community celebrations and to facilitate public fundraising. Current District Governors in Australia have been lobbied by Past RI

Directors to throw their full support and resources behind this major initiative. See pages 34-38 of the October edition of Rotary Down Under for an early insight into some of the exciting plans already under way.

However, the real message for clubs and Districts is that NO effective promotional campaign can be planned and staged without adequate

Page 9: ROTARY CLUB of CLAYTON Inc Rotary... · A list of all our 2009 Annual Charity Golf Day sponsors can now be found ... child we sponsor. Of every $ 110 an amount of $10 is taken out

budgets and funding! Check out the 100 ways to celebrate Rotary Day on the website (www.rotarydownunder.com.au). Choose the celebrations that best suit

your club or District and frame your budget accordingly. Plan now to hold special fundraising events to finance your club or District’s public celebrations.

Corporate support needed Similarly, PDG Dick Garner – RI Public Image Resource Group Zone Coordinator – is seeking $25,000 in corporate support for the production of the “primary schools End Polio Now television newscast”. This is a unique concept that will really appeal to Primary School-age children – and grab the attention of major media outlets in Australia. Anyone with leads to such sponsors should contact PDG Dick at [email protected].

Further, Rotary Down Under is keen to find corporate support to finance publication of the splendid Rotary International comic book, Amazing

Stories of Polio. Again, the cost of publication and distribution to Australia’s 6000 primary schools is estimated to cost $20-$25,000. One of the major hurdles in the final eradication of polio has been to spread the knowledge of the deadly impact of the dreaded virus. This comic book communicates the right message very clearly with young people. Again, take time to check it out on RDU’s home page: www.rotarydownunder.com.au

Virtuoso on board

If anyone needed confirmation that the worldwide End Polio Now campaign is really gathering momentum, it surely came with the recent announcement from Rotary International that world famous violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman and the world-renowned New York Philharmonic will present the Concert to End Polio on December 2.

Assistant Conductor Daniel Boico will lead the famous orchestra and the concert will take place in the Avery Fisher Hall at the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts in New York. Itzhak Perlman contracted polio at the age of four and has overcome serious physical challenges to become one of the world’s most celebrated musicians. He is the winner of 15 Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008 and said in announcing his support for the Concert and

fundraising for the End Polio Now campaign, “The fact that polio is still around is ridiculous. There is absolutely no excuse for anyone to get polio. This is an issue that has to be dealt with immediately”.

New PHF certificates Given the above emphasis on the End Polio Now campaign, Rotarians will

be interested to learn that all Paul Harris Fellow Certificates will carry the End Polio Now logo for the duration of Rotary’s $US200 Million Challenge. New Paul Harris Fellow recognitions from July 1 now include

the unique certificate – which is certain to become a treasured keepsake once polio is eradicated.

Glasses from heaven The Rotary Club of Taradale, NZ, has thrown its support behind Project Heaven – a hearing and vision screening program that has assisted some 340,000 students in Fiji in recent years. Rotarians Bob and Glenys McCaw presented a carton of 80 used reading

glasses to Project Heaven manager Fani Volatabu recently, as part of the club’s genuine effort to help people with eyesight problems. It is the second donation of reading glasses from the Rotary Club of Taradale to Project Heaven.

Wyman leads Probus New Zealand Rotarian George Wyman is the new chairman of the Board of Directors of the Probus Centre – South Pacific.

A member of the Probus Club of East Coast Bays Combined, George is also a member of the Rotary Club of East Coast Bays, and assumes the reins of leadership from immediate Past Chairman Bob Bensley, a member of the Probus Club of Blacktown and the Rotary Club of Prospect, NSW. The immediate past president remains on the Board for a further year of service. The recent annual general meeting of The Probus Centre marked the retirement of Past Chairman Chris Norwood (ACT) and Directors Graham

Lee (South Australia) and Bob Osborne (Victoria). Bob was also the retiring secretary of the Board.

Newly elected members of the Probus Board include Veronica Semmler of the Combined Probus Club of Barossa, (SA), Ken Brand, of the Men’s Probus Club of Hamilton, Vic, and Past District Governor Anne Louttit, of the Candelo and District Probus Club – and the Rotary Club of Bega, NSW. In a unique double for New Zealand Probus clubs, Vice Chairman for 2009-10 is Jean Burford, of the Probus Club of Mt Herbert Ladies, NZ. Other members of the new Probus Board of Directors include PDG John Thorne, of the Rotary Club of North Hobart and the Probus Club of Hobart Macquarie Combined, Tasmania, who is the Treasurer of the Board; PDG Merv Richens of the Rotary Club of Loganholme and the Probus Club of Springwood Inc, Queensland – who is secretary of the Board; Gary Blackler of the Probus Club of West Pennant Hills and the Probus Club of Coonara-Cherrybrook, NSW; Lois Bown, of the Probus Club of Bannister Creek, Western Australia; and PDG Geoff McLennan OAM of the Rotary Club of Deloraine and the Probus Club of Deloraine Combined, Tasmania.
