Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie SEPTEMBER Youth Month

From president ESTHER ...

DO YOU KNOW SOMEOME WHO WOULD MAKE A GREAT

ROTARIAN?

BRING THEM ALONG TO OUR NEXT MEETING

GUEST SPEAKER

Chelsea Gillam - Postposed Unfortunately Chelsea was unwell and able to present to the club on 9 September. We will be rescheduling so that we can still hear all about Chelsea’s GSE experience.

The concept is simple. Take a few moments to look around your kitchen for those packaged food items that you and your family no longer want or need and bring them to one of our September meetings. You don’t need to knock on doors or ring friends! Spring Clean Your Pantry runs for the month of September. At the end of the month we’ll contact Foodbank WA (Kalgoorlie) and arrange for them to come and collect our donations or one of the members can deliver them to Foodbank. As a guide, one standard size can of food represents a meal for a person in need. Last year this program raised more than 1200 cans of food for people in need. This year Foodbank would like to collect 1500 cans to assist Western Australians who are struggling to make ends meet. Many of us have surplus food in our cupboards and Foodbank WA would love to have those three or four cans that you forgot you had and no longer want. Items can include:

Meals in a can

Pasta

Rice

Evaporated milk

Canned vegetables

Canned fruit

Cereal

Canned soup

Canned fish and meat Please join with Foodbank WA and your fellow Rotarians across the state and Spring Clean Your Pantries for Foodbank WA in 2013.

Information from District 9465 FROM THE GOVERNOR’S PEN Youth Service recognizes the importance of empowering youth and young professionals through RI programs such as Rotaract, Interact, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Rotary Youth Exchange and district programs such as Handicamp, National Youth Science Forum, Condophillips Science Experience, Roadsafe Driver Awareness, and Short Term Exchange Program.

Rotary Youth Service is the fifth Avenue of Service You can help develop leaders in our community and clubs by getting involved in Rotary programs and activities. You can also Empower young people through Rotary D9465 supported Youth Programs

My own experiences being involved with youth programs for four years as District Youth Director have provided me with many stories and experiences “My Rotary Moments” that have created a sense of achievement and satisfaction that ultimately encouraged me to nominate for the role of District Governor

Every Rotarian can also experience this sense of self-worth and achievement by getting involved in You th Serv i ce . The var ious committees running the District Youth Programs need your support and need you to become involved. Call Craig Alford or the program chairs if you can help.

I have very fond memories of RYLA as a committee member for 4-5 years and so many fantastic memories. I recall a few years ago in Busselton on a night hike during the storming part of the Forming Storming Reforming Norming leadership model our RYLAarians in the cold and dark , late at night, and in light rain saying thank you to me as each group separately trudged

past . I was on duty at a staging location able to get out of the cold and rain in my car and they are saying thankyou!

Through a strategic decision by the RYLA committee 5 years ago the linkup between Rotaract and RYLA occurred . The growth of Rotaract in recent years is no accident but rather reflects the impact of RYLA on our young participants.

At the recent GSE interviews two of the four outstanding applicants had previously attended RYLA as 18 year olds . Clearly this leadership camp has had a profound impact on them as the quality of our team currently in Denmark is outstanding.

Each of the Youth programs has a p ro found impac t o n t ho se participants who attend.

My own daughter several years ago attended NYSF through the Leeming Club in D9460 . She intended to study a certain field of science and upon discovering more about the field on the two week NYSF forum changed her mind and instead studied to become a Veterinary Surgeon. NYSF saved her from years of wasted study.

Elizabeth a young member of my own club and a former RYE student changed her mind on her chosen field of study while on exchange and became a language teacher. There are so many similar stories coming out of the RYE program.

At Handicamp I have seen first-hand the fun and excitement experienced by the campers but even more importantly I have seen the impact on the buddies those young adults who volunteer to help those with disabil i t ies. If you want to experience this yourself then come to the Handicamp Dinner in January. RYDA a program of driver awareness and is increasingly recognised as a program that impacts on young students just before the reach the driving age.

How many lives have we saved ? I can only encourage you all to get involved in all and every youth program you can and make certain the students come back to your club and tell their stories so every member can see first-hand the impact these programs have in shaping the lives of the participants. Engage Rotary and you will certainly Change Lives.

As we see on the news every day, the crisis in Syria is worsening. Over 2 million refugees have now fled Syria and over 4 million people remain displaced within the country. The majority are in desperate need of shelter and other vital aid, leaving their homes with just the few possessions they can carry. So far ShelterBox has sent aid to support over 4,500 families in Syria, Iraqi Kurdistan, Lebanon and Jordan. But as we hear first-hand from our SRT volunteers working in countries in the region, many thousands more need our help today.

So, what’s the plan? Shelterbox International has set a target of £2 million ($3.4 million) to provide shelter and other essential aid to a further 5,000 families over the coming months – that’s what! ShelterBox Australia wants to raise $500,000 to contribute to this total.

To help us do this, today we launched the SYRIA REFUGEE APPEAL – a national, public appeal asking for funds and support to help us shelter families fleeing conflict.

It’s a huge target, but we believe that with your help, we can reach it! Over the coming days and weeks, we will be contacting you regularly with updates on the appeal, letting you know as and when new materials become available and revealing a few exciting initiatives. A special fundraising account has been set up for the Syria Refugee Appeal (https://sna.etapestry.com/fundraiser/ShelterBoxAustralia/SyriaRefugeeAppeal/). Those that wish to sponsor boxes may still do so through the usual channels ..... we will continue to respond to other disasters around the world. Thank you in advance for your help and support – working together all of us here at ShelterBox believe we really can make an enormous difference to another 5,000 families fleeing conflict.

OCTOBER 2013

105th Rotary International Convention 1-4 June 2014 : Sydney www.riconvention.org

Do you belong to the Building Crew or the Wrecking Crew?

10 Rotarians getting along just fine - 1 disliked another - then there were 9.

9 Rotarians stayed up very late - 1 slept through the meeting - then there were 8.

8 Rotarians on their way to Heaven - 1 ignored our Objects - then there were 7.

7 Rotarians chirping just like chicks - 1 disliked the singing - then there were 6.

6 Rotarians seemed very much alive - 1 lost interest - then there were 5.

5 Rotarians serving at a store - 1 stopped a while to rest - then there were 4.

4 Rotarians each busy as a bee - 1 got his feelings hurt - then there were 3.

3 Rotarians knew not what to do - 1 joined the sporty crowd - then there were 2.

2 Rotarians, my rhyme is nearly done - differed with each other - then there was 1.

1 Rotarian can’t do much ‘tis true - brought his friend to join the club - then there was 2.

2 earnest Rotarians each won one more - doubled the number - then there was 4.

4 sincere Rotarians work early and late - each won another - then there was 8.

8 splendid Rotarians, if they doubled as before - in just so many meetings - we’d have 1024.

In this little jingle, there is a lesson true - you belong either to the Building ... or the Wrecking Crew!
