What a night we had Monday night! Even the Mitchell Medal count going on in the next room failed to dampen our enthusiasm!

Congratulations were extended to Gloria Moyle who is Coordinator at Goldfields Women's Health Care Centre. GWHCC won the Team award at the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Chamber of Commerce and Industry Business Awards last Saturday night.

I also congratulated Kim Eckert on Kalgoorlie Boulder Urban Landcare Group winning two awards on the night. One for Employers supporting people with a Disability and the second for Best not for Profit

Organisation.

Being 1 September, National Wattle Day, we celebrated with sprigs of wattle on the table and I made an Orange and Wattle seed cake which went down a treat. Some interesting facts about Wattle day: Wattle Day had its humble beginnings in Hobart, Tasmania in 1838 and culminated 150 years later in Canberra. 19 July 1910 a South Australian Branch of the Wattle Day league was founded, followed by a Victorian Branch in September 1910. in particular Justices of the Peace. Katrina was joined by her boss Ray Warnes who was in Kalgoorlie.

A highlight of the evening was introducing Kim Eckhart as our very first Friend of the Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie. Kim was also the lucky person present whose raffle ticket was drawn. She was not fortunate enough to draw the Joker from the pack of cards. So Angelo was very relieved the jackpot is still growing.

Visiting Rotarian, Steve Glover, from the Rotary Club of Northern Yorke Peninsula joined us for the meeting.

Next week's Guest Speaker will be John Bowler who will talk to us about life after Politics.

The Club still has some Climb for a Smile Raffle tickets. We would like to sell the remainder at the meeting so that the butts and money can be sent back to Perth. If you indicated you would purchase a ticket please do so

Monday or let Esther know you would like a ticket so one can be set aside for you.

September is Youth Service Month. We are currently seeking nominations from young people aged between 14 to 18 to participate in RYPEN from 24 October to 26 October. If you are aware of any young person who would like to nominate to attend please let Roger or one of the Youth Services Team know.

It is with sadness that I inform you of the death of PDG Frank Carter. A funeral service for PDG Frank will be held in Cunderdin at the Uniting Church Hall, Egeberg Street commencing at 11am on Thursday 11 September 2014.

Enjoy the rest of your week as you Light up Rotary.

What is RYPEN?

RYPEN stands for Rotary Youth Programme of Enrichment which, through a weekend live in seminar for up to 45 participants, aims to create in young adults an awareness of their place in and responsibility towards society.

Participants are sponsored and paid for (at a cost of around $285 pp) by the many Rotary Clubs within District 9465 who see RYPEN as a great opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to youth in their community.

Who Should Apply?

Teenagers between fourteen and seventeen years of age who have not yet experienced leadership positions, but who have the potential to benefit from such exposure.

What Does RYPEN Offer?

Increased motivation and improved life skills

Better self image and more pride in self

An understanding of how to set and achieve goals

The confidence to overcome failure and take control of the one's future

An opportunity to challenge personal boundaries

What Does it Involve?

RYPEN is an intensive programme which includes developing and implementing problem solving skills. At the same time participants from different backgrounds are interacting with each other and improving their teamwork

skills. Activities may include a low ropes course, a team building course, workshops, games and more done in an informal atmosphere, where questions and debate are encouraged.

Where is it Held?

The camp is held at the Baptist Churches of WA-Serpentine Camping Centre, 22 Transit Road, Jarradale

When is it Held?

Two camps a year are organised usually in May and October. The next two camps will be 24-26 October 2014 and 15-17 May 2015

As photojournalist Allison Kwesell walks through the narrow streets of an Indian village, familiarity sets in. She visited here four years ago, when she first met Samir and his family. He was two years old then and had recently contracted polio.

Kwesell approaches the front porch of a home when she hears an older woman yelling “Samir! Samir!” She runs toward the voice, wondering if she’ll recognize the boy. She sees six children playing chase on the dry earth, the dirt forming clouds around their feet. From afar she notices a young boy, not unlike the other barefoot children in the backyard overlooking patches of farmland, except for his slight limp. She moves closer and the children pause, half encircled around the boy. Kwesell recognizes him by his eyes. Samir is six now, and with the help of physical therapy, he can run and play with the rest of the children in his village on the outskirts of Moradabad.

Samir is one of the last children in India to contract polio. In March 2014, the World Health Organization announced that its Southeast Asia region is officially polio-free. The certification came on the heels of India’s successful fight against the disease: It celebrated three years without polio in January.

The nation’s achievement is the result of a grueling 36-year battle that sent millions of health workers down alleys, up mountains, and across deserts to reach every child in this sprawling country. Not long ago, India had more cases of polio than any other nation in the world. This milestone means that 80 percent of the population worldwide lives without fear of the paralyzing disease.

Samir’s mother, Fahmida, has seven children now. She worries about Samir, who will have to cross a busy road on his way to school when he starts later this year. He sometimes falls down when running too fast, but he always gets right back up. Samir’s doctor believes that his case was less severe than it could have been because earlier vaccinations against polio helped him build partial immunity. Fahmida is hopeful for his future; Samir wants to be a doctor when he grows up.

“For mothers, all of this hard work will mean fewer worries about crippling disease,” says Kwesell, a former Rotary Peace Fellow.

POLIO’S RETREAT

Months of physical therapy have allowed Samir to keep active with his siblings. He loves to play outside, and his favoUrite game is chase. Since 1995, when India held its first national polio immunization campaign, 2.3 million vaccinators have visited 209 million households to immunize 170 million children every year. Their efforts will help provide a polio-free future for generations to come throughout Southeast Asia.

Paraguay/Argentina - flooding

Overview: Heavy rains have caused flooding across six regions in Paraguay, including in and around the capital Asunción, affecting over 200,000 people. Many are in evacuation centres, or in makeshift shelters. More rain could fall in July, keeping the Paraguay and Paraná river levels high. The rains are also affecting parts of Argentina just across the border from Asunción.

Current team: Alan Monroe (US), Bill Woodard (US) and Brian Glenn (US).

The team has been working to distribute aid with the Paraguayan Red Cross in and around Asunción (Paraguay). A shipment of aid containing shelter repair kits and other NFIs (non food items) has been distributed across four different locations in the city of Asuncion. The team is also aiming to distribute aid in nearby Argentina once suitable forward logistics have been finalised.

490 shelter repair kits have so far been distributed across four different sites in Asuncion (Paraguay). The team(s) have also provided four tarps to assist the development of a child-safe space working with Plan. The team(s) have also distributed 1,000 ground sheets, 3,000 blankets and 500 kitchen sets as part of this same distribution.

Iraq - conflict

Overview: The rapid advance of militant fighters has thrown Iraq into crisis and has now led to overseas involvement in the form of aid interventions. The UN estimates that 1.2 million Iraqis have now been internally displaced by the crisis. Most recently thousands of people, largely religious minorities, were left stranded atop Sinjar Mountain after being driven from their homes by the advance of Islamic State militants in the region.

ShelterBox currently has prepositioned stock in Iraq and will be working with UNHCR and ACTED to move 500 UN specification tents to Duhok, near the border with Syria, to be used to establish a camp to provide shelter

for internally displaced people (IDP’s) such as those fleeing Sinjar Mountain.

Although daytime temperatures in the region are currently high the ShelterBox Operations team are making provisions to supplement the existing stock of shelter in Iraq with winterisation kits. This is more of a precautionary measure should the need for shelter sadly extend into the colder winter months.

Philippines – Typhoon Haiyan

Overview: Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines on 8 November 2013. With winds of 195mph, the typhoon was the largest storm ever recorded to make landfall and left the region devastated.

Current team: Toby Ash (Project Coordinator).

We have delivered aid to help over 7,000 families. Our Response Teams have worked in shifts to deliver aid to over 7,000 families, many of them in remote island communities. Almost 6,800 received tents, but ShelterBox also provided other non-food items including 10,000 solar lights, 870 water filtration systems, 2,300 mosquito nets, 445 tool kits and 30 SchoolBoxes.

Over 100 SRT members have been deployed. Now the need for emergency shelter has diminished, ShelterBox has turned its attention to providing other types of aid that are more suited to the current need in helping communities rebuild their lives.

Cameroon – conflict

Overview: The ongoing conflict in Central Africa Republic (CAR) is forcing thousands of people from their homes across to neighbouring countries including Cameroon.

ShelterBox is talking with various aid agencies to see how we can assist.

Gaza (Palestine)/ Israel – conflict

Overview: Israeli air strikes on Gaza and rocket fire on Israel has forced thousands to evacuate their homes.

Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie

OPERATIONAL UPDATE

Page 7: Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie - Club Bulletin - 8 September 2014

Thousands of Palestinians are seeking refuge in northern Gaza. A potential Israeli invasion could displace thousands more. Hundreds of Gaza based civilians with dual-citizenship have also crossed the border in to Israel. Several failed cease-fires have only mounted tensions and the situation has escalated in recent weeks. The International aid effort has faced many complex challenges and the feasibility of certain types of aid remains a difficult issue.

ShelterBox provides emergency shelter and other non-food items to families displaced by conflict and natural disaster. The disaster relief process related to conflicts is complex, and varies from context to context. Even the shelter sector has many different components, of which tented shelter is one. Other approaches include collective centres, re-build schemes, or the use of host families.

ShelterBox has been in contact with several agencies operating in Gaza, and also the UN coordinated Shelter Cluster. All indications are that, at this stage in the emergency response, tented shelter is not considered to be an appropriate form of aid. Gaza is densely populated, and therefore space for tent erection presents a significant barrier. Additionally the safety and security of beneficiaries is paramount, and there is concern that tents do not provide any protection from the on-going bombardment. Finally, due to limited access to Gaza, relief efforts are focused around the provision of food, health and medical care, and enhancing protection.

We remain in constant communication with informed and well-placed contacts, and when it is considered appropriate for ShelterBox to provide assistance to any displaced people in the region, we will be ready to respond.

Ukraine - conflict

Overview: According to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the ongoing tensions in Ukraine have displaced an estimated 10,000 civilians and the number

of people affected is set to keep on rising.

Current team: Alice Jefferson (UK) and Paul Crudgngton (UK)

ShelterBox is talking with International Federation of Red Cross to see if and how ShelterBox can assist the internally displaced persons. Talks are ongoing.

The team is also looking into whether winterisation of shelter is a necessary consideration with the onslaught of colder months ahead.

Niger - Flooding

Overview: Heavy rains and subsequent flooding have affected almost 28,000 people and killed 12 across the country since June. Niamey, Tillaberi and Dosso regions are among the worse affected. We are in discussions with Plan to see how we can meet the need of those affected in these regions.

ShelterBox is in discussions with PLAN to see if we can be of assistance to aid efforts. The first ShelterBoxes are hoped to be sent for distribution soon, pending final approval of the agreed MOU (memorandum of understanding) for the partnership with PLAN on this deployment.

Nepal – Flooding and landslides

Overview: Earlier this month communities along the Nepal-China border were submerged by rising floodwater. Meanwhile similar scenes have been witnessed along the Nepalese border with India and many districts in-between. It is now estimated that as many as 19 districts are currently underwater across the mountainous country. As conditions have worsened fears of a potential outbreak of cholera have now emerged.

Current team: Sallie Buck (UK) and Ryan Lampasona (US)

A ShelterBox response team has arrived and is assessing the need and feasibility of a response.
