Dear Rotarians, How suddenly our lives have changed…in almost every way possible. The “new normal” is anything but normal! While we are faced with anxieties during the Corona-virus pandemic, we will persevere. We will be stronger. Together, we…Connect. We’ve all created alternative ways to stay in touch with your family and your Rotary family. Now is the time to keep engaged. Take a few minutes and visit www.Rotary5750.org and review some ideas to maintain engagement with your club. Social distancing and “Shelter in Place” (stay at home, except for necessary trips) should not stand in the way. Be creative and share your ideas on the district Facebook page. In this time of need, think of ways your club can help your community. Providing Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), food and toiletries to those in need., shopping for those who cannot or should not be out, mentoring and reading to students via online, and the list goes on. Again, share what your club is doing. Floyd Lancia, our Rotary International Director recently stated “From the strength of our economy, to the reliability of our political leadership, and to our individual resili-ence, we are now in a critical situation that will have profound consequences for how we work and act as citizens, neighbors and Rotarians.” He continued, “Rotary will be measured by its ability to have handled this adversity

DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE — CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE

...eradicate Polio. It sounds easy, but it won’t be. Many of us have made sacrifices before, but this time is going to be different. I believe as you do: If Rotary does not get involved, we will have failed in the most fundamental tenet of Rotary and this is, undoubtedly, the time to react.” President Franklin D. Roosevelt, stricken with polio at the age of 39 served our great nation during some of the most trying times, the Great Depression and World War II. He brought hope as he promised prompt and vigorous action. President Roosevelt helped Americans to regain faith by his words of encouragement. One of his quotes is so applicable today. He said, “The great fact to remember is that the trend of civilization itself is forever upward; that a line drawn through the middle of the peaks and the valleys of the centuries always has an upward trend.” Rest assured, together we’ve endured storms in the past; and we came out better because of them. What we learn from this adversity will grow our character and help us to rediscover what matters most. The future may be different than we planned, but it will be brighter than we’d imagined possible. So, keep doing all you can. Be proactive in helping your family, fellow neighbor and Rotarian. We are Rotary; and in times like these, I am so grateful for my Rotary family. Be safe. Yours in Rotary, Lance Singleton District Governor 2019-2020

TOGETHER, WE FIGHT CORONAVIRUS MATCHING GRANT OPPORTUNITY

During times like this is when Rotarians connect and make things happen. The district has created a match-ing grant opportunity for all clubs; and it is very TIME SENSITIVE. (Deadline: April 6, 2020)

The grant addresses a critical need for our first responders…hand sanitizer. The district purchased 275 gal-lons of Liquid Hand Sanitizer 70% v/v, Ethyl Alcohol/Water Mixture and will be packaged in gallon units. Your mission (should to choose to accept it, Mission Possible!) is to pick up a quantity and distribute to fire and police departments, sheriff, hospital and nursing home/assisted living centers.

The attached flyer outlines the core elements of the grant…in a nutshell, the district will match $1 for $1 on the cost of hand sanitizer. The grant has been authorized and all clubs need to do is complete the simple commitment form at the end of the newsletter and email to me.

Please distribute to your foundation chair and board; and make a quick decision. Supplies are limited! For clubs outside the metro Oklahoma City, you might want to entertain teaming up with a neighboring town and share in the pickup process. (An idea, Enid could pick up and then Alva, Woodward, Gage and Cherokee would pick up in Enid.) You know your neighbors, so work together and remember to maintain safe distanc-ing.

Looking forward to your replies; and please call, email or text me with any questions. Together, We FIGHT COVID-19.

    ROTARY PEACE FELLOWSHIPS

The Rotary Peace Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for an individual in your community to gain new

skills and contribute to Rotary’s mission. Your club is needed to help make this happen!

District 5750 is actively seeking applications for this year’s Rotary Peace Fellowships. Your Club can make a

difference by promoting the fellowship among your community networks and contacts. There is no cost to in-

dividual clubs or the District for any Fellows that are accepted.

    Overview of Rotary Peace Fellowships:

    1. Full scholarships available for Master’s degree program and professional development certificate pro-

    gram.

    2. Applicants can be new in career through mid-career professionals.

    3. Programs range from one year to 24 months.

    4. Eight participating universities in seven different countries.

    5. Applicants cannot be a Rotarian or related to a Rotarian.

    6. Completed applications are due to the District by May 31, 2020.

Our District Peace Fellowships webpage and the attached announcement provide more information and links

to useful resources about the program.

    How Your Club Can Participate:

Your Club is needed in two ways as we launch this work:

    1. Local Promotions: Identify a club member (or members!) to learn more about the Fellowship and oppor-

tunities for promoting it locally. This could be you, other officers or club members. I will follow up with them

directly to provide information and support.

    2. Subcommittee Membership: Identify any club or community member that you think would be interested

in serving on the District subcommittee. Experience with community development, education or social service

programs, promotional campaigns and conducting selection and interview processes would be useful. I will

follow up with them as we develop our subcommittee.

You can send your contacts’ info to me directly at [email protected]. My full contact info is below.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if there is anything I can do to support your club’s involve-

ment in the Rotary Peace Fellowships program. I would be glad to visit with your or your club. This is truly a

unique opportunity for our community partners.

RYLA ELECTRICIAN NEEDED! RYLA needs an electrician at Central Oklahoma Camp in Guthrie! We are in need of an electrician to update

a couple of things in the RV camping area. This would require an onsite visit to establish what is needed. We

are in a time crunch and any Rotary related referral would be appreciated.

Please contact Jeff Gabelsberg 904-509-4497 or via email at

    [email protected].

Thank you all for your support!

As the COVID-19 pandemic spreads uncertainty and hardship around the world, Rotary members and participants

are innovating, caring for those affected, and showing that even at a distance, there are ways to help.

As people of action, Rotary members are engaged in their communities — gathering for projects and offering help

to those in need. But in many areas, life is changing drastically. Health experts are urging people to maintain dis-

tance from others or even isolate themselves in order to slow the spread of the highly contagious virus.

Fighting disease is one of Rotary’s main causes, so members already support efforts to promote proper hand

washing techniques, teach people other ways to stay healthy, and supply training and vital medical equipment to

health care providers. Now they’re helping health authorities communicate lifesaving information about COVID-19

and donating protective gear and other supplies to clinics and hospitals that are under strain because of the pan-

    demic.

These are just some of the ways that members are supporting their communities right now:

    • In Italy, one of the countries that has been affected most, clubs in District 2080 are raising funds to purchase

ventilators and protective gear for overstretched hospitals. And when the worst of the outbreak was raging in

China, the district’s clubs raised more than $21,000 for protective masks to prevent spread of the disease

    there.

    • Clubs in District 2041, also in Italy, raised funds online to buy protective gear for health workers who will care

for COVID-19 patients at a 400-bed hospital being built at Milan’s fairgrounds.

    • In Hong Kong, Rotary clubs have raised funds, packed medical supplies, and visited public housing to distrib-

    ute masks and sanitizers.

    • Rotary clubs in Sri Lanka installed thermometers in airport bathrooms and produced posters to raise aware-

ness about the coronavirus for schools across the country.

    • The Rotary Club of Karachi Darakhshan, Sind, Pakistan, distributed thousands of masks to people in Karachi.

    • Clubs in District 3700 (Korea) have donated $155,000 to the Red Cross.

    • Rotary clubs in Nigeria’s Akwa Ibom state conducted a campaign to raise awareness about the threat of the

virus. Members shared information about the illness and how to keep safe at two schools and distributed mate-

rials about using good hygiene to stay healthy.

    • The Rotary club of Metro Bethesda, Maryland, USA, is contacting neighbors who live alone and are quaran-

tined. Volunteers are asked to contact at least five of those people each week to ask how they are and if they

need anything. Members are also leaving flowers on their doorsteps.

Tell us what you’re doing, so we share and stay connected!

CHANDLER—IRISH STEW DINNER POSTPONED Chandler Rotary Club has not been able to meet the last several weeks and had sold tickets to our annual

Irish Stew fundraiser that has happened for many years. All members are invited on the evening before to

prepare the vegetables and then return the next morning to begin the cooking of those vegetables, meat, and

homemade desserts that each of us bring. It brings our club together as no other fundraiser or program

has. We have not given up on it, as our club board decided to postpone it, not can-

cel. Even with all the changes we have seen, we will come together again and

continue to do those things when all of this over and it's safe again. So, from

Chandler, we send our greetings and prayers for all the clubs who have stories

similar to this until we are all able to meet again.

    BRICKTOWN—NEW LOCATION

Bricktown Rotary has a new home! After 16

years of meeting in upper Bricktown, the club

has moved to lower Bricktown beginning this

Spring. Lealon Taylor, President of the Club

    recently announced that Charleston's Restau-

rant has welcomed the members of Bricktown

    Rotary to their upscale facilities.

Taylor said "the management and staff of

Charleston's have greeted us with open arms

and are excited to have our group utilize their

    state-of-the-art meeting room" Dena Shackle-

ford, a charter member for the Club stated 'we

love meeting at Charleston's. The meeting

room has all the bells and whistles that we could

ever want or need. In fact, we meet in the room

that was Kevin Durant's personal party

pad! Even though he left the Thunder, he left

behind a great place for Bricktown Rotary to

    meet!"

The Club will be hosting an 'open house' and

inviting all area Rotarians to come check out

their new digs in the near future. Rumor has it

that adult beverages will be plentiful! Details will

    be forwarded to each club.

    BRICKTOWN—FUNDRAISER POSTPONED

Bricktown Rotary has postponed it's annual fundraiser,

which was planned to be held on May 8th in Oklahoma

City. Because of Covid-19 virus concerns, the Club an-

nounced that it's annual Wine and Whiskey tasting titled

"Grapes and Grains-2020" would be delayed until this Fall.

Mike Vela, committee member for the fundraising event

stated that "the Club had secured the CHK/Central Boat-

house to host the event as well as had obtained the local

OKC band 'Superfreak' for entertainment." He said that

"both the Boathouse and Superfreak management staffs

had been extremely understanding and will continue to

partner with Bricktown Rotary when the event is resched-

    uled".

Editors note: Bricktown always hosts a great party. So

plan to attend when it's rescheduled.

WEST OKLAHOMA CITY—WESTERN HEIGHTS SCHOOLS FOOD PARTNERSHIP

The West OKC Rotary Club Board met and voted to partner with Feed the Children to provide food boxes for

children and families in the Western Heights Public School District (WHPS). WHPS has one of the highest

poverty rates in the state with 100% of their students qualifying for free lunches. We have an opportunity to

engage during this crisis and meet a real need for a targeted area that has been greatly affected. Through

our partnership with Feed the Children and WHPS, we have two opportunities to serve these families:

First, we can give. The board committed to match the first $1,000 given by our members to provide much

needed food for these families. Feed the Children has created a giving link specifically for our club: http://

www.feedthechildren.org/worc. All donations received on this giving page are tax-deductible and 100% of the

funds received will go to provide food for children who attend WHPS.

Second, we can deliver. Members that are not in a high risk category have the opportunity to help the school

district deliver the food boxes to the families who need it most. All deliveries will be “no contact” and will be

done in partnership with WHPS. Please email Matt Evans, our volunteer chairperson, at

[email protected] if you’d like to help deliver food boxes (dates and times TBD).

It is an honor to serve this community with you. Thank you in advance for your generosity!

    In Service Above Self,

    Marc A. Long,

    West OKC Rotary President, 2019-2020

    ceutical sciences in the

STILLWATER—READING PROJECT AND PAUL HARRIS FELLOWS

For the past 25 plus years, Stillwater Rotary Club has supported reading in SPS. Each year, all third grade

students enrolled in the 6 Stillwater elementary schools were given a student dictionary. This year, cub mem-

bers modified the program and gave each school a check so that every third grade student would be able to

purchase books at the school’s book fair. Money for the project is raised by the club’s birthday fund and do-

nations from club members. Students were also given a bookmark engraved with Rotary’s 4-Way Test.
