Rotary District 5810 Roundtable Meeting April 14, 2012 Jim Mills, Park Cities Rotary, gave the invocation. Marianne Elwell, North Texas Pioneers Rotary, led the pledge. Bill Perryman, East Dallas Rotary, led the Four Way Test District Governor’s Opening Remarks—DG Bud McBrayer DG McBrayer welcomed attendees and thanked everyone for the great turnout and asked club presidents, president-elects, AGs and later on the PDGs to stand and be recognized. April 21 is Spring Training at Booker T. Washington School of Performing Arts in Dallas. Keynote speaker will be Chad Hennings, Dallas Cowboy and Rotary District 5810 Luminary Spokesperson. Vickie Campbell was recognized as the district newsletter editor. DG McBrayer encouraged clubs to submit articles for the district monthly newsletter. Vickie’s email has been sent to each club president asking for 300 word articles. DG McBrayer toured the tornado damage in Lancaster and Forney. After contact with municipalities, District REDI director Bill Peterson is coordinating District 5810 Rotary volunteers to assist with sweat-equity second responder tasks. When first responders are finished, then second responders can come into the area. Volunteers will wear a bright yellow T-shirts with REDI symbol on the front and Rotary wheel and District 5810 on the back. Governor’s Aide George Elking, recognized Carl Stuckey, Frisco Rotarian and Embroider Me owner, for donating the T-shirts. Lancaster is ready to have volunteers. Monetary contributions will be accepted. There will be no May District Roundtable due to RI International Convention in Bangkok. The last roundtable for the year is June 9, 2012 and will be a recap of the year. Lisa Nolley was recognized and displayed the 2011-2012 GSE uniform for the outbound team to Northern France. Lisa and team members depart for Lille, France next month. GSE team members are Judith Guzman, Attorney Legal Aid of Northwest Texas, Rachel Key, English Professor Grayson College, Jamie Lassiter, Boles High School teacher, and Kristin Vilbig Grayson College Ceramics Professor. More information on the team members is attached at end of minutes. Lisa thanked JD and Barbara Grimm for helping with French, cards, and brochures. DG McBrayer requested all AGs have their final report submitted to Administration Director Craig Hutton and/or Lt Gov. Ginny Ryan for prior review and submittal to District Governor by May 25.

District Governor’s Opening Remarks—DG Bud McBrayerDG McBrayer welcomed attendees and thanked everyone for the great turnout and asked club presidents, president-elects, AGs and later on the PDGs to stand and be recognized.

The drop-dead deadline for the discounted hotel rates at the District Conference is Monday, April 16. PDG Tom and Lt. Gov. Ginny Ryan displayed the district conference shirts.

The Four-Way Test Competition will be April 28, 2012.

Immediate Past District Governor Linda ElliottFinished PETS training in March. PDG Elliott conducted the spouses program. Speakers and information for Rotary spouses was very successful and much appreciated.

District Governor Elect Sandra ForsterLone Star PETS was great. Thursday evening reception was enjoyed by all. Spring Training is Saturday, April 21 at Booker T. Washington School of Performing and Visual Arts. Registration begins at 7:30am and there is ample parking. Chad Hennings will be the keynote speaker. Clubs encouraged to wear team attire that day. Prizes for most club members in attendance and team attire. Some clubs have 11-15 members signed up. AGs will contact clubs that have not registered. Approx 250 people registered so far.

Governor’s Aide George ElkingReported for End Polio Now Director PDG Dave McSpadden. The program is making strides. George also thanked Brigette Elking for cleaning and making coffee at all the roundtable meetings this year. DG McBrayer thanked Peg McBrayer for all her help and advice this year.

Secretary Ron MartinEncouraged everyone to be at the District Conference.

District Parliamentarian—PDG Mark HealyNot present. DG McBrayer asked that anyone or any club proposing changes to the District Manual of Procedure (MOP) needs to submit proposal to PDG Healy before the District conference. Notice to club presidents has been sent out for voting at district conference.

Lt. Governors

Lt. Governor—Ginny RyanPDG Tom and Lt. Gov Ginny Ryan thank you all for your prayers and concerns for the passing of both Tom & Ginny’s mothers. Lt. Gov Ryan has a copy of a club report, AGs please see her about the report.

Lt. Governor Ryan recognized AG John Barrett, Bonham Rotary who stepped in to help be the AG for Commerce Rotary club.

District Conference—Jim DuffyDistrict Conference Chair Jim Duffy reported that registration is ongoing. www.regonline.com/5810dc The district conference will be May 17-20, 2012 at the Choctaw Casino and Resort in Durant, OK. You must call the hotel for reservations and Monday is deadline for discounted hotel rates. After Monday, the rates at the hotel go from $119 to $306 for Saturday night. There are no activities on Sunday.

Service Projects and Membership—Stephen StraughanStephen Straughan reported on the two service projects at the District Conference. Youth Services of Bryan County, Inc needs help painting 5-6 roomsand Larkspur Village senior living facility needs help planting flower beds. Both projects will be Saturday from 1-5pm. Wear old clothes and prepare to get dirty. In case of rain, Durant Rotary Club will assist with district Rotary projects that could not be completed. Details will be on the website. Registration to sign up for projects will be at the District conference.

Services--Beverly GroganBlood Drive—Daniel LongThe district blood drive goal was 5,812 units and 5,999 units were collected. Remember when you walk in to donate blood you must give them your club name for your club and the district to get credit.

International Convention--Karl ClausThe RI International convention is in 21 days. There are 14,000 registrations with 15 District 5810 Rotarians going. There will be a Cowboy Dinner cruise on Sunday night organized by Houston district. Houston 38 Rotarians attending. .

REDI—Bill PetersonWas not in attendance and DG McBrayer asked that clubs please send Bill their REDI coordinator’s name. Things would go a lot smoother in pairing up clubs and service projects by having a club REDI coordinator. Contact person for district work is Bill Peterson.

Lt. Gov Ryan reported that over 5,000 Royse City volunteers worked to help clean up the area.

Four Way Test CompetitionBeverly Grogan reported that Four Way Test Competition is April 28 at South Prairie High School. Contact Dr. Susan Gainer, Grand Prairie Metro and competition director or Beverly Grogan if you would like to help at the event.

Water Projects Chair Peter Fitzwilliamis back in the country.

New Generations—Jim DuffyTomorrow April 15 is the application deadline for RYLA campers. Everythingelse is on track with the first counselor meeting April 15.

Interact--Beth Anderson & John CurtisOn April 26, Carrollton-Farmers Branch Rotary will host a RYLA, Rotaract and Interact program.

April 28 is the Interact Spring Fling. There will be training and awards presented to all Interact clubs. An award will presented to the best Interact club project for the year. Interact clubs have submitted their projects and the Ryans are providing the trophy. During district conference, Interact achievements will be highlighted.

April 28 Spring Fling needs volunteer cooks and directional leaders. The event begins at 12:30 at the home of Debbie Holley 442 East Tripp, Sunnyvale. If you can help, please contact Beth or John.

DG McBrayer reported he just signed a club charter for Preston Center Rotary sponsoring West Dallas Interact.

Interact fall program looking for a new location. Does any Rotarian have a close connection with an ISD high school? Please contact John or Beth.

Rotaract--Daniel LongFirst Rotaract officer training was held on March 24. There was a small turnout, but a great group from 4 different Rotaract clubs. April 20 will be the Collin College Rotaract international potluck at Spring Creek Campus. The Collin College Rotaracts are also ready to help with REDI.

Youth ExchangeKenny Tyler introduced Youth Exchange student Val from Hannover, Germany. He has been here about 7 months and is sponsored by the Grand Prairie Metro club.

DGE Forster reported for Sam Zarro, Youth Exchange Director that in August eight inbound students will arrive and the he needs three more host clubs for students from Belgium, Germany, and Norway.

Lt. Governor John Johnstone

Public Relations—Jeff CrilleyNot present, Lt. Gov. John Johnstone and DG McBrayer gave report. Everything implemented for the publicity grant project. There are three billboards on I20 I35 and 820 in Ft Worth, PSAs on Channel 11 during Masters Tournament and other times. 6,000 posters are coming and will be distributed to each district club member to post in their community. George Elking reported that Jeff Crilley is promoting Rotary 5810 Facebook. John reported that district members can post items individually to get the word out about Rotary.

Todd Jones, Richardson Central, has program on social media for presentation to Rotary clubs. Contact Todd at [email protected] if your club is interested.

District Awards—Bill RolstonEight clubs have submitted applications and the committee is soliciting more applications before the April 20 is deadline.

Membership Lt. Gov. Johnstone reported the district has 2,887 members, 20 more than last year.

Foundation—Bill PerrymanClubs that contribute to RI Foundation through the club need to send the money in before June 30 or sooner. Foundation and polio reminders were sent out to club presidents to get the money into RI. Polio program reports 41 new cases year to date with India reporting no new cases since Jan 13, 2011.

The Gala committee is still working on final numbers approximately $55-57,000 profit will be sent to Rotary Foundation in name of attendees. Attendance was 500 people. Bill recognized Barbara Perryman for her work on the gala and Barbara passed out list of items that did not receive bids. Bud & Sandy Forsterwon certificate for the Chuck Cooperstein dinner and everyone had a great timeBarbara thanked Interact and Rotaract volunteers who helped at the Gala.

Director Perryman reported that two Polio immunization volunteers died on immunization trips one in Afghanistan and one in India.

John Moser requested clubs send members to Spring Training for the grant preparation seminar. Clubs need to be certified for the new grant program.

Announcements from the Floor

Necrology forms went out to club presidents. Clubs are requested to submit names and photos of Rotarians who past away between May 1, 2011 and May 1,2012.

Niels Johansen, Dallas North Rotary, announced the club’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of their charter club on May 17. All are welcome to attend.

Bill Perryman’s office is moving and there is an open house on May 10 from 4-8pm at 12221 Merit Dr. Suite 1660 in Dallas.

DG Bud McBrayer presented DGND Bill Dendy, DeSoto, a REDI T-shirt for his club helping out with tornado damage.

PDG Linda Elliott announced the White Bridle Society’s spring luncheon on May 5. The website for this equine therapy non profit and the luncheon is www.whitebridle.org

PDG Richard Gilman reported that LB Showalter’s proposal on attendance excuses will be voted on at Council on Legislation in 2013 along with 375 other proposals.

Dustin Kolb reported on the Rotary District Book grant for Plano Sunrise and North Texas Pioneers Rotary clubs and mentioned the Ride for Relief motorcycle ride on April 28.

Dan Neal asked us to keep in our prayers Travis Mills from Frisco who is in critical condition after walking on a land mine in Afghanistan during his third tour of duty.

OVS Barry Jordan commented that District 5810 has a higher level of awareness of military news of service persons and their families due to the connections of Rotary members in our communities.

Daniel Long needs information on all Rotaract & Interact clubs for RI.

Door prize was won by Fred Bemenderfer.

The next district roundtable will be June 9, 2012 at the Plano Chamber of Commerce.
