Weekly News and Announcements Hello Rotarians and Friends! What a wonderful Monday! We dodged a huge bullet this weekend by not getting any snow and now we are thawing out from the super cold temperatures we have been experiencing. Every car wash I passed on the way home was doing a booming business.
ROTARY NOTES
A publication of the Rotary Club of Warren, Ohio
Upcoming
Speakers
January 6 Jim Graham, Warren City Council President
January 13 Deryck Toles, Inspiring Minds – After School Program
January 20 Max and Zack Zitney – Jerky XP (a new employer coming to Warren)
January 27 Mark Rhodes, Cortland Rotarian, Animal Rescue Program
This week, Dave Smith took a page from the John Robertson book on Fellowship and gave us a history lesson about what happened on January 20th in history. Of course, his delivery is a bit different from John’s (we don’t always know where John is taking us until we get there), but we all went home smarter than when we arrived. We had a number of guests this week. Among them: Eric Thompson from Satoli Carpet, Sherry from Cortland Banks, Jason Leo (Rob Berk’s guest from China), and William Mowel (guest of Dan DelliQuadri). Rod Zeck from Cortland Rotary also attended this week and promises me that he will visit more often in the future. Rotarians with makeups: One – Bodor, Bollas, Bugos, Cumberworth, Ditch, Faulkner, Gibson, Iannucci, Jadloski, Jenkins, Jones, LaPolla, Levy, Masaki, May, Nero, Oblinger, Odille, Parsons, Powers, D. Sauer, Sexton, Straniak, Surin, Torisk, Vaughn, Verina, Warren, Wetstein, Woodall, and Zimomra. Foundation Board Meeting – The Foundation Board will meet on Wednesday, January 27th, 11:30 a.m. at Enzo’s. If any member is unable to attend, they should contact Cheryl Oblinger immediately. Pizza Challenge Tickets – Members were urged to get their ticket money turned in from the Pizza Challenge. We would like to close this event out as soon as possible. Expressions of Concern – We just learned that Tyra Ealy’s mother has passed away. While details were sketchy, we will be thinking of her and looking forward to her return. We urge everyone to keep her in their thoughts and prayers. Vote on Club Bylaws – As promised, we voted this week to approve the proposed changes to our Club Bylaws. After one correction from Bob Sauer, Tom Baker motioned and Diane Sauer seconded that we approve the changes as proposed and amended. The motion unanimously carried. Special Presentations – Mike Bollas presented Cheryl Oblinger with a special membership pin from Rotary International for proposing a new member to our club. Then, Julia Wetstein make a special presentation of a Rotary pin that she had in her personal collection with the flags of Albania and Italy on it. She told us how Nick Verina has a twin brother and he is always telling people that one of them is from Albania and the other from Italy. Now, he has a pin that recognizes their shared (but separate) heritage. How fabulous is that! Every Rotarian, Every Year - The Annual Fund is the primary source of funding for the programs of The Rotary Foundation. In order for us to continue doing so much good in the world, it is necessary for Every Rotarian to participate in the program and to support our Foundation Every Year. We ask that all Warren Rotarians give annually to the Every Rotarian, Every Year Campaign. Donations can be made in one lump sum of $100, $10 per month (September through June), or $50 two times a year added on to your dues payment. Checks, cash and credit cards are accepted. Those wanting to be a part of doing good in the world, should see Dallas Woodall or Cheryl Oblinger for more information.

We are Cordially Invited Rod Zeck from Cortland Rotary extended a personal invitation to everyone to attend the Cortland Rotary’s Polio Plus fund- raiser. Cortland has purchased the house at Trumbull New Theater in Niles on March 10th at 7 p.m. The show is a comedy called Drinking Habits and it looks like a doozy! There will be a social hour beginning at 6 p.m. with wine, cheese, and light snacks. There will also be door prizes and a 50/50 raffle. The doors open at 7:00 p.m. sharp. Tickets are $12 per person. The proceeds from this event will be donated to the Rotary International Foundation to be used toward Polio Plus. If you are interested in attending, please contact Rod Zeck at 330-502-9663 for ticket information, etc.
Here’s Another Invitation! The Bloomfield Rotary Club in District 7120 wants to award our District $500. Bloomfield is located in New York State, in the heart of the beautiful Finger Lakes featuring such highlights as Niagara Falls and the Corning Museum of Glass. The Bloomfield Club is inviting you and a spouse, other Rotarians, and friends to participate in a one week tour of the Finger Lakes next September 14-21, 2016. Perhaps you’ve already traveled to the Finger Lakes area. Here’s a chance to see the Finger Lakes “Rotary-Style”. Space is limited. So far, three Districts have individuals registered so don’t delay! For the District that signs up the most participants first (Rotarians, spouses, and friends), the Bloomfield Club will donate $500 to the Rotary Foundation in that District’s name. Signups will be accepted until May 31, 2016. For every Rotarian that signs up, the Bloomfield Club will donate $100 to the Rotary Foundation in that Rotarian’s name. Details can be found at FingerLakesShowcaseTour.com.
Jerky XP We were delighted to welcome Max and Zack Zitney as our speakers to talk about their new business in Warren. Max and Zack are twins, 23-years old, whose business plan is more than about making money. It’s about making a difference and giving back to the community.

Jerky XP is not a business you will see advertised on cable or in the newspaper. It is exclusively publicized in social media and their product can only be purchased online. Both guys attended Ohio State but dropped out in their fourth year because their business took off and keeps them very busy. As is the case with many young men their age, they were into online gaming and ate a lot of beef jerky while playing. Inspiration struck and they thought they just might be able to create a business tailored to meet the needs and desires of folks just like them. They located a business in the Columbus area that could make the jerky and ship it to them and they would fulfill orders from the online community. They said the first two years they were in business the jerky was delivered on pallets to their apartment (which we are sure made the FedEx guy very happy). Jerky everywhere! They wanted to expand the business and include a community service element, but needed money to finance their idea. Through Linked In and Chase, they were selected to receive $100,000 for the purchase of a building in Warren that will become their fulfillment center. Competition for the funding was fierce…more than 35,000 businesses applied. Work is underway at the building where Max and Zack plan to have a fulfillment center in the front portion of the building with offices in the rear. The business plan calls for their hiring second chance labor (those who were drug and alcohol addicted) and giving them an opportunity to start over. The business continues to adjust and change as they now have a subsidiary business called Jack’s Snacks, a line of dog jerky. The face of the product is Jack, their Yorkie, who is the “CEO” of Jack’s Snacks. Neither of the guys wanted their face on their products and by using Jack’s picture instead they have built the personal interaction between their clients and their company that they were striving for. Max and Zack were funny, smart and (as is often the case with twins) finished each other’s sentences throughout the presentation. We are delighted that they decided to locate their business in Warren and wish them all the success in the world. Anyone wishing to order their products can go to jerkyxp.com for product information and pricing.
