President Adam called the meetinghouse order at 12:15 Attendance was marginally better than our last meeting. Thanks to Marlene for hosting as Lynda was not able to attend. Pres. Elect Garry sent his regrets as well.

President Adam started us off with a groaner. A fella visited his doctor (obviously it wasn’t under covid restrictions) and complained of something weird going on with his leg. The doctor questioned his patient and

the patient said it would be best explained if the doctor listened to his thigh. The physician put his ear to the fellow’s thigh and said, “I’ve never heard anything like that. A voice asked me to loan him $20!” he exclaimed. To which the patient replied, “That’s nothin’ doc, now listen to my knee.” The doctor did so and found that the knee had a voice too. It wanted to borrow $10. The doctor said again that this was a totally unknown affliction and began looking through journals (definitely before Dr. Google) The patient said, “so listen to my ankle too doc”. The doctor again listened and heard “I really need $5. Can you please loan me $5?” The doctor was baffled. He thought for a moment and looked the patient in the eye saying, “ There is no medical reason for your affliction but what my many years of experience in giving diagnoses leads me to suggest is, Your leg is broke in three places.”

President Adam’s Updates:

As of this writing, the Rotary Foundation Gala is past. If you did not attend the Gala, you can still contribute to the Foundation. If you are unsure of what options there are or how to contribute, contact John Coxon.

The Rotary International Convention will be held June 12-16 and it will again be virtual. This link will take you there. https://vimeo.com/513498000 If you haven’t been to an international convention, this may be an opportunity to get a taste without the expense of travel, hotel etc. Registration before the early bird date will also save a little. There are also a few pre-convention conventions at a cost of $20 each that might be interesting to attend.

President Adam will have boxes of End Polio Now tulips available in the fall. Now is the time to plan. They are only $25 per box and about half the purchase cost goes to the campaign to end polio. Over the duration of the program, Rotary has donated over two billion dollars, and many, many volunteer hours. The progress is slow but is proving not only that the goal is worthy, but that vaccines work.

😊 Larry was happy with the Mother’s

day dinner he ordered from the golf course.

Our Guest Speaker, His worship, Mayor Andy Lethem joined us to give an update and a “state of the union” synopsis.

Andy reports that information varies and can be confusing but generally our communities have fared reasonably well in the last little while. People have generally followed the rules and the police report not too many infractions. Our hospitals have not been overwhelmed. Vaccinations continue to roll out and he expects the efforts to ramp up in the next few weeks.

Financially, the city is a little ahead with a surplus in both ‘19 and ‘20, a further surplus is projected for 2021. Some capital projects have been postponed to 2021with others being held off until 2022.

Main street construction in both Lindsay and Fenelon Falls is progressing slightly ahead of schedule.

Future development looks promising with a 300 million dollar ‘cell’ project going well and 1400 residential units as well as a projected golf course development near Cameron and commercial development on the Orsi property.

The Wellness Centre in Coboconk will answer a need for community service and health related retail. Andy did not “Jump in the Lake” during the recent

fundraising campaign. He said the water temp was barely above freezing. He also said that the City is working on getting funding from other sources as well.

There continues to be interest in development properties in our several communities.

There was time for a couple of questions.

The ATV or ORV (off road vehicle) task force is working and realizing concerns. We have to work with the “shared trails” concept. Council is attempting to find something that works by putting a temporary program in place that will be revisited for change as fits.

The down town construction will be modified for the summer. Kent St. in Lindsay and Lindsay St. in Fenelon Falls will be opened for the summer and construction will be resumed in the fall. Further side street construction will continue during the summer in Lindsay.

There being nothing further for the good of Rotary, the meeting was adjourned.

Whatever Rotary may mean to us, to the world it will be known by the results it achieves.

Paul Harris

Polio: There is no cure. It results in paralysis and death. It affects children. It is preventable by immunization.

If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.

What impact can one donation have?

It can save a life. A child can be protected from polio with as little as 60 cents. Our partners make your donation go even further. For every $1 Rotary commits to polio eradication, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has committed $2.
