ROTARY INTERNATIONAL what it does – what it represents – what it accomplishes – Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united world- wide, who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace everywhere. Rotary was founded in Chicago on February 23, 1905, and now consists of some 1.2 million service-mind- ed women and men belonging to more than 32,000 Rotary clubs in nearly 170 nations. Rotary’s motto is “Service Above Self” – Rotary concerns itself with truth, fairness, and improving relations between people and world nations. The avenues of Rotary service include community and interna- tional volunteerism through club activity and participation in all vocations. Rotary clubs are nonreligious, non- governmental and open to every race, cul- ture and creed. Club membership repre- sents a cross-section of local business and professional services. Rotary clubs are autonomous and deter- mine their own service projects based on local needs and the interests and abilities of members, who meet weekly to initiate and plan service activities. SERVICE PROJECTSOpportunities for enhancing communi-

ty spirit, patriotism and citizen involve-ment are both numerous and ongoingthroughout the four seasons. Active par-ticipation in voluntary choices of servicepromotes a healthier living style for every-one ...

Adopt-A-Highway: Two times a yearCanandaigua Rotarians voluntarilyremove litter from two miles of Route 5 &20 east of Canandaigua working in con-junction with the NYS-DOT highwaysafety and ecological program.

Bike Safety: Each spring at the elemen-tary school a bicycle safety rodeo is heldallowing students to demonstrate theirriding skills. Rewards and recognition aregiven to all participants while the spon-sors again emphasize safety techniquesand procedures for all age groups.

Dictionary Distribution: Rotary gives freedictionaries to third graders in localschools, providing educational resourcesand sending to the students our messagethat all levels of education are important.

Scholarships: Each year four Canandaiguahigh school students are awarded club-funded scholarships for their academicsuccesses and contributions to the com-munity. Quarterly, the club also recog-nizes a “Student of Excellence”.Canandaigua Rotary also awards onescholarship each year to a Finger LakesCommunity College student.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing: Our clubsupports the Salvation Army’s holidaybell ringing fund raiser by staffing sites tobolster the kettles. In the spirit of friend-ly competition, a tally-total is comparedto the Kiwanis Club’s similar efforts.

Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion: Asection of the rose beds in theSonnenberg New York State Historic Parkis nurtured by the club. At the annualArts in the Gardens, an ad hoc commit-tee staffs a refreshment booth support-ing the Sonnenberg program.

Charitable Requests: A committeereviews special requests for one-timefinancial assistance to organizations.Special situations can often be remediedwith our help. In the past this has result-ed in funding city beautification pro-grams, equipment for a playground, andworthwhile building funds.

Bowl-A-Thon and Bowl For Fun: Kiwan-ians compete with Rotarians for braggingrights in a bowl for fun contest. TheBowl-A-Thon pits an individualRotarian’s team, made up of family andfriends, against all other teams.

Reforestation: The club celebrates ArborDay by bagging several hundred pineseedlings which are then given to ele-mentary school students who plant themon the property of their choice.

Interact Club: Every other week afterschool a group of Canandaigua highschool students hold Interact meetings,the high school version of Rotary.Interact introduces students to princi-ples of Rotary and gives them a chance toserve their community as they practice“service above self”.

Rotary Foundation: All InternationalRotary clubs contribute to the“Foundation” which is a trust fund whereits income is dedicated to fund manyhumanitarian works. The foundation’smost significant world-wide project hasbeen Rotary’s commitment to vaccinationagainst polio, which has virtually eradicat-ed the disease through our ‘Polio-Plus’campaign.

Camp Onseyawa: During the 1950’s,Rotary clubs from Ontario, Seneca, Yates,and Wayne counties initiated CampOnseyawa, a two week-long stay at a sum-mer camp for children with serious hand-icaps. The idea was to give these specialneeds children camp experience whichcould not be delivered by traditional sum-mer camps. The camp’s website iswww.onseyawa.org.

Holiday RPO Concert: For several yearsnow, the Rochester PhilharmonicOrchestra has performed at theCanandaigua Academy, bringing superbtalent. The CA Chorale joins with the RPOand sings traditional Christmas music,ushering in the holiday season in splendidfashion.

Holiday Dinner: Since 1992 Rotary hassponsored a free holiday dinner each yearon Christmas day, guaranteeing that thosewith limited resources or alone in theworld have a generous meal with music,gifts and personal interaction.

Ten Thousand Dollar Winner! Fifty-FiftyJackpot Drawing: Members sell tickets forthe early summer drawing, when seven-teen thousand five hundred dollars ofcash is awarded, with one lucky winnerreceiving the grand prize of $10,000.
