GUEST EDITORIAL: In October 1905, a miracle of aeronautics took place: the Wright brothers’ third aeroplane, stayed in the air for a whole 39 minutes! This fact alone demonstrates how different that year was to 2010. Communication, too, was primitive compared to the electronic means of today. The pace must have been much slower and yet the first meeting organized by Paul Harris on 23 February, with undoubtedly, only local ambitions, led to a national, and then international organization within a relatively short period of time. Only seven years later, the first clubs outside the USA were formed, in Canada and Britain. By 1914 there were already 1,128 Rotarians in Britain! Harris had, obviously, come up with a concept with wide appeal and the appeal has lasted 105 years! The appeal of Rotary lies to a large extent in the fellowship that business and professional people are able to share with each other. With the quality of members the organization attracted, it was inevitable that ethics and service would become major emphases. With the destruction of life and property caused by the two world wars, peace, goodwill and understanding also became issues. To address all these aspects, Rotary has grown into a complex organisation with many programmes and priorities – far too many some will say. It’s just impossible for any of us to get involved in all aspects of Rotary. How do we manage our involvement in Rotary, then? Let’s get back to the reason for Rotary’s rapid growth and longevity – its appeal. Each of us should ask ourselves the question: What is there about Rotary that appeals to me most? This is what each of us should concentrate on, because this is going to make us both happy and effective Rotarians. And what is more, what more do you need to attract new members than a club full of happy and effective members? Albie

We are well in to March and reading Rotary Africa I see that it is Literacy month. To be unable to read or write in today’s world must be extremely difficult. Imagine not understanding what signs meant, what you are buying etc etc and the frustration this brings.

Interestingly, according to U.N. studies in 2003 it was estimated that 86.4% of South Africa’s total population over the age of 15 could read and write. That would indicate that over 6 million South African were illiterate. By 2010 things may have improved but for sure there is a huge number of people in our country that cannot read or write. As a matter of interest it is estimated that in 2005 there were some 785 million people in the world that could be defined as illiterate. They are in three main areas, the Arab States, South & West Asia and Sub Sahara Africa. Which brings me to our Books in Homes Project: It is a wonderful project that our club is involved in. It was with pleasure that I saw many teachers trying to improve their knowledge at Penreach and then buying books sold to them by our “wrinkly” brigade. What a service they perform. I would like to encourage all members to assist our wrinklies in their requests for assistance. I think we should all make an effort to see where and how the books are printed, where they are stored and how they are distributed. JD, Alan, Mike, Marie, Rob, June and others involved, we salute you, may you continue with this project for many years and hopefully, with time, more of us will become involved – not necessarily with the credentials of a wrinkly, of being over the age of 65, having had a heart bypass etc! Another project about to begin on the 24th of March is Camp Quality. Many of us have been roped in and hopefully we will all assist the main organizer Ed, with this most worthy project. Then behind Camp Quality we have a Duck Race to arrange and a golf day. Please do your best to help the organizers with these much needed fund raisers that allow us as Rotarians to do our work in the Community. Phew! Then there is the District Conference. Let us register and give a strong showing at the conference and also rally behind the Conference Chairman Brian. Let’s work together in making our Community a better place to live in. The Future of Rotary is in our Hands. Brian

After a two month break over Christmas and New Year, the Anns swung back into action at the beginning of February. Jackie Robson hosted the first meeting of 2010 and Neha kindly sat in the Chair in my absence. By all accounts it was a fun evening with several spouses, and a few extra ‘Danns’, enjoying Robson hospitality as well. Thank you Patrick and Jackie. The Anns did manage to get some business done: the roster for our first week of sandwiches for the primary school was drawn up; there was discussion with regard to Conference and the ‘Goody Bags’; June Coombes was a welcome guest and she spoke about Camp Quality and ways in which the Anns can be involved. June Sykes and Mara Smythe will be helping June with the ‘housekeeping’ each day, so that she can join in with some of the trips with the children. After all these years, I think that’s well-deserved! The election of an Ann President for the next year was also settled at the meeting. Ricky Pott has been on the lookout for an Ann President during his tenure in the ‘hotseat’ and Lucielle Dermauw has kindly agreed to take on the job – again! Lucielle was Ann President for Rhodes Abell and Alan Ranson so is really proving to be a Rotary stalwart. Thank you Lucielle! Although the Anns did not meet in December and January we did enjoy fellowship with the rest of WRRC and it was our sad pleasure to help with catering at Jimmy and Tony’s funerals. Marie and Sharon are both special members of the Club and they can be assured of our love and support in the difficult months ahead. Being quite a small group, we do feel it when an active member of the group moves away and we were sorry to say goodbye to Viv Middleton. Not only was Viv a Past President, but she was always willing to do her share of the work. On Monday 22 February we joined the Rotarians for a Partners Evening and Sybil kindly took on the Sergeant’s duties for the Anns. Her ‘family’ theme worked very well and she managed to hold her own in a very full and entertaining programme. Thank you Sybil! And to end, I leave you with the quote on today’s page in my diary: “Never fear shadows. They simply mean there’s a light somewhere nearby.” Ruth E. Renkee

NEW MEMBER Rotary White River welcomes a new member, Kossam Dongo and his family as new comers to our area. Kossam, or Kosy as he prefers to be called, is Director: Research, Information Services and Infrastructure Development and Maintenance with the Department of Agriculture stationed in Nelspruit. Kossam and his family were living in Ermelo for the past 12 years prior to his move to the Lowveld. We wish them well in all areas of their lives. President Brian welcomes Kosy

RETARDED GRANDPARENTS (This was actually reported by a teacher) After Christmas, a teacher asked her young pupils how they spent their holiday away from school. One child wrote the following: We always used to spend the holidays with Grandma and Grandpa. They used to live in a lovely big 2 storeyed house but they got retarded and they moved to a retirement village. Now they live in a box sort of house and have rocks painted green to look like grass. They ride around on their bicycles and wear name tags because they don't know who they are anymore. They go to a building called a wreck centre, but they must have got it fixed because it is all okay now. They do exercises there, but they don't do them very well. Sometimes they sneak out to golf but their bits are getting stiff. Also they need operations to fix some of their parts. Especially poor old Grandma. There is a swimming pool too, but they all jump up and down in it with hats on. At their gate, there is a doll house with a little old man sitting in it. He watches all day so nobody can escape. Sometimes they sneak out, and go cruising in their golf carts. Some of the people can't get out past the man in the doll house. Nobody there cooks, they just eat out. And, they eat the same thing every night --- early birds. The ones who do get out, bring food back to the wrecked center for pot luck. My Grandma says that Grandpa worked all his life and so did she to earn their retardment and says I should work hard so I can be retarded someday too. When I earn my retardment, I want to be the man in the doll house. Then I will let people out, so they can visit their grandchildren.

MASOYI SPECIAL CARE CENTRE There is lots to be grateful for with regard to the Masoyi Special Care Centre at the moment, so much so that I wanted to share it with you all:

I am still amazed, as we drive in the main gate, at the beautifully grassed play area, paved driveway, colourful flower beds and ramp up to the main building that greet us, courtesy of our Mpumalanga Premier, who adopted Masoyi as one of his beneficiaries this year.

Patrick Robson generously allows Lucy and her team to fetch as many vegetables as they can use from his farm on a weekly basis.

They have recently been donated a fridge/freezer and a washing machine by well-wishers through Sue Adams, an Uplands parent.

R1000 has been donated by a donor from Switzerland, with more funds coming soon.

Frances Hyson has visited Masoyi to help Peter Matsabe with his schoolroom activities. There is also a retired teacher who helps them out on a regular basis.

The Uplands community service and Interact kids continue to visit on a weekly basis. Wednesday afternoons are a highlight for the children of Masoyi. It is completely out of the comfort zone of the Uplands kids, but they respond with compassion and maturity.

Therapists from Themba Hospital visit Masoyi on a monthly basis to train and give advice to the care-givers and Uplands kids. They have made arrangements for several of the children to visit Themba regularly for occupational therapy.

Lucy, Peter and Liffie (care-givers) have all enrolled in a pre-school course at Penreach. They will be going once a month for the rest of the year, starting 27th February. Also, Oupa, a deaf boy, will be doing a Sign Language course at Penreach.

Lucy and I have had a meeting with a representative from the United States Peace Corps who is helping organise a Volunteer to be seconded to Masoyi for two years, starting March 2011.

CHARLES PENTZ -- A TRIBUTE Of the current crop of WRRC members, very few remember Charlie Pentz - most have never heard of him, never mind met him. He was inducted into WRRC in 1962, and served Rotary actively, with dedication and distinction, until about 1998 when deteriorating health sidelined him. He remained an honorary Rotarian until he died on 20th February 2010.

Charlie was born in 1936, from parents of German origin, and grew up in Johannesburg. He was sent to Volkskool Heidelberg where he matriculated. After national service he improved his English by studying dentistry at Wits. He met Yvonne Pentz (no relation) in Johannesburg and they were married in 1960. After qualifying with distinction in 1961 he bought the dental practice of Dr Bruwer and the couple settled in White River. Although a city boy, he had great love for “platteland” life and the bush, and they both wanted to raise their children in contact with nature. At first it was difficult to gain the acceptance and trust of the close-knit community. The English part saw him as an Afrikaner, the Afrikaans part saw him as “Engelsman” ( and a Rotarian for good measure!!). He persevered and eventually built up a very successful practice. Three children were born – Francois in 1962, Anton in 1964 and Andrea in 1965.

Charlie was mentored by Rotarian Jim Pike into becoming a trout fisherman (he was bitten by a strong bug) and then into becoming a Rotarian, and he was inducted in 1962 at age 26. In those days for an Afrikaner to join Rotary was seen as heresy. He took to Rotary like a fish to water and, like every venture he tackled, did it with great enthusiasm, dedication and distinction. He served two terms as president (1968-9 and 1978-9), led a GSE team to Taiwan in 1982, served on the District Youth Exchange and GSE committees for many years, received a Paul Harris award from WRRC (at a time when it was regarded as a highly prestigious recognition) and was asked on a few occasions to be DG, which he could not accept, having a one-man dental practice to run. During the 70’s and 80’s he was always one of the leading stalwarts of Rotary in White River – one could even say he was the public face of Rotary in White River.

In addition he played many other roles in the community : a justice of the peace, chairman of the National Party, member and president of the Eastern Transvaal branch of the Dental Association, president of the SA Dental Assoc for a year, he served for many years on the White River Irrigation Board, and White River Estates Conservation Board until recently, President and Honorary life member of the Lowveld Angling and Boating club, founder member of the Billfisher club, Honorary nature conservation officer, President of the Eastern Transvaal Provincial Karate Association, founder president of Lowveld Chess club, and dental officer to the White River Commando. This list is not exhaustive!

Rotary played a major role in his life and that of the Pentz family. Of all his commitments and responsibilities, apart from the Conservation Board and fishing, Rotary probably meant most to him. He lived his life by Rotary principles. At a time when South Africa was the polecat of the world, he tried so hard to improve inter-national understanding and peace through GSE and YE. Andrea was a long-term Exchange student to Idaho, USA. He was so ably supported by Yvonne, who was behind him all the way, and gave so much to the Rotary Anns over the years.

Francois lives in White River, and works in Nelspruit. He is a CNC machinist. Anton is a mechanical engineer and lives in Pretoria. Andrea lives in Pretoria and is owner-manager of a remedial school.

Charlie is survived by Yvonne and his mother, who live on their plot Lubeck, the three children and nine grandchildren. Our condolences are extended to them on their loss, and we pay tribute to a great Rotarian of his time. MikeL

On 23rd February 1905, Paul Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Hiram Shorey, and Silvester Schiele met to talk about their personal and professional experiences. Harris then unfolded his general plan for a club. Out of this simple beginning sprang the world's first international service organization, which has now grown to include more than 1.2 million members in over 33,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.

Rotary clubs around the world found a variety of creative ways to celebrate Rotary's birthday, also known as World Understanding and Peace Day; for example:

• Members of Rotary clubs in Nepal took part in a peace rally in Biratnagar. • The Rotary Club of Scottsbluff/Gering, Nebraska, USA, celebrated Rotary's

105th birthday by marking the 90th year since it received its club charter with a fundraiser to expand the local library.

• The Rotary Club of Canton, Georgia, USA, holds its weekly meeting on Tuesdays and celebrated with a large cake, complete with big 1, 0, and 5 candles. The club will also be donating $105 to PolioPlus.

• The Rotary Club of Tumkur City, Karnataka, India, has conducted a free dental checkup for children at a Red Cross school for the deaf and mute.

• The Rotary Club of Milledgeville, Georgia, USA, invited Rotarians, families, veterans, and community members to a large Peace Day celebration at the peace monument at the county courthouse.

• All 21 districts in Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland took part in a Thanks for Life Week to raise funds for End Polio Now.
