It is sad times for both students and staff, but very exciting times as well for the Class of 2017. The group have been great ambassadors for our school and will be missed by our staff and the school community. We wish them every success in their exams and in the future. I thank all the families that attended the Parent Teacher interviews during the last week of the term. The recent Parent Teacher interviews has given valuable feedback on the progress of each student to their parents and some suggestions on how to further improve their performance. During assemblies, I spoke to the students about the importance of feedback. It is anticipated that students are using this information to set goals for themselves, supported by their families, as we finalise studies at all levels. I look forward to reading the progress made in the semester two reports of our students. We are also well into the student course selection process and looking forward to meeting our new Year 7 group for 2018. On Friday 17 th November, our teachers and support staff will be involved in our final curriculum day for the year. The purpose of the day will be to learn more about supporting students with special learning needs and for anaphylaxis first aid training. This will be a student free day. Parent Surveys Thank you to all the parents that completed the parent survey. More parents participated in the survey, which is good as it helps our school get a better idea on the areas that we should focus on to improve our school in the future. Library The library works have begun this term with the affected areas removed, as well as all equipment and materials cleaned from any contamination. The floor as well as layers of soil under the building will be removed to ensure that the building is safe. This work and the following refurbishment of the library, will take some time. Spring Concert Our music students and staff have spent all year working together to enhance the different music teams across the school as well as build the capacity of all the students in the program. The audience made up of family members, students and staff, were entertained with the wonderful music performances throughout the night. It was obvious that the students and teachers have an excellent relationship. The appreciation demonstrated by the students towards their teachers, was great to see and certainly depicts our school values. There were a number of students who were acknowledged throughout the evening; particularly, our Year 12 students who were performing in their last Spring Concert. Our Band Support Group remains the greatest supporters of our program. The team, had secured a number of sponsors that donated gifts towards the raffle. The dedication and hard work is much appreciated and demonstrates the partnership and encouragement from our parents at Belmont High School. To Rosemary Humphrey and all the music teachers, students and parents, well done and thank you. They should be proud of their achievements this year. Education Perfect Again, a number of our students performed very well in the Education Perfect online program in Mathematics, Social Sciences and Language. We have started to acknowledge our students at each of our General Assemblies this term. Several students received pins signifying their level of achievement from the organisation. Nikhil Mehta achieved 3 rd overall in the world in Mathematics. This is an outstanding achievement given the number of students (40,000) across the world that participate in this competition. ICAS Digital Technologies competition Several of our students sat the ICAS Digital Technologies competition. This was an Australia wide competition and our students performed extremely well. The following students received high distinctions, which puts them in the top 1 % of the participants for their year level. Congratulations to Ned Sweeney, Riley Rogers, Sam Phelps, William Moore for achieving high distinctions and to Gwyn Roberts for receiving the Principal’s Award.

CONGRATULATIONS Codey Funston participated in the National Inline Hockey tournament during the school holidays, and came away with a Gold medal for the 13’s Victorian team, and a Silver medal for the 15’s Victorian team. In addition to this, Codey was selected as part of the Australian team to play in the AAU Junior Olympics for inline hockey next July in California. We congratulate on his success. GOLD HOUSE NEWS Welcome to Term 4. We have hit the ground running, literally! Our final House Assembly on Monday recognized our Year 12s with a lovely reflection speech by our GOLD House student leader Joe Kelly. It was then time for fun with the Year 12s taking on the rest of GOLD House in a game of dodge ball! This was a fighting end for our very sporty Year 12 cohort. The Year 12’s have been very busy preparing for their final exams as well as planning and coordinating their Valedictory dinner, which was a lovely tribute to each student. A big thank you to Elise Brown who led the sub-committee expertly and compiled photos and videos into a wonderful presentation that will be remembered forever. Thanks also to Jonty, Zeke and Michael who came into school in the holidays to organize the night’s events. All of GOLD House extend our best wishes to our Year 12 students as they venture into the next stage of their lives. #STAYGOLDEN In our last newsletter report, we wished our debating team all the best for the House Debating for the Grand Final held next Tues, 12th Sept at lunchtime. Tash Walker, Clancy Conron, Beau Attard and Bridget O’Keeffe put on an amazing display of skill and intellect to professionally get across the argument that “The environmental movement has made little progress”. It was a very tight debate with GOLD and Purple House locked in the battle of excellent arguments and rebuttals. Our team came out winners after a very tight finish. What a fantastic team effort with thanks also going to Miss De Bruyn, Nathan McGlynn and Maisie Hill for supporting the debating team through their many lunchtimes of preparation. Charley Russell of 7G had a very busy Term 3, participating in the Tournament of the Minds team that made it through to the State Finals. Charley was an integral part of this team demonstrating outstanding organizational and creative skills. Well done Charley! Rain Wu of 10G was a standout at the BHS Multicultural day displaying her skills of playing her traditional instrument to a large crowd of students and teachers. Thank you to all the GOLD House students and their parents/guardians for really taking on the responsibility of notifying the school when absences occur. There has been a significant increase in the prompt notification of absences and we would wish all students good health so that they do not have gaps in their learning programs. A big thank you also for your patience and perseverance as we all learn to navigate the new compass system. We have also been encouraging and developing students ’ capabilities on this system so together, our communication can improve on many levels including learning tasks and attendance. Here’s to Term 4! Linda Jennings, Scott Mackenzie (House Leaders)

STUDENT HEALTH INFORMATION Head Lice Head lice or eggs have been detected. It is very important for you to check your child’s hair. If lice are found, it should be treated as soon as possible, using safe treatment practices. Please see website link http://health.vic.gov.au/headlice/, from the Victorian Department of Health. This website has up to date guidelines on detecting and treating head lice and eggs. According to the Health Regulation requirements, if a child has head lice, that child should not return to school until the day after appropriate treatment has started. This refers to those children who have live head lice and does not refer to head lice eggs. If you have any questions regarding this issue, please contact me in the Health Centre. Medical Information Update To ensure the health and safety of students at all times and to ensure that staff have necessary medical information, parents/ carers are responsible, in relation to their children for:

Keeping the school informed of any medical conditions, treatments and medical contact details.

Providing staff with appropriate information and instruction, where medical conditions require specialised treatment.

Updating the school on any changes in medical conditions and/or required treatments. For Students diagnosed with Asthma, Allergy, Anaphylaxis, Diabetes and Epilepsy: Parents must provide the school with an Action Plan and management plan completed by the student’s medical practitioner. Individual management plan: Parents of the student ’s diagnosed with anaphylaxis/allergy are required to make an appointment with the School Nurse to organise an individual management plan. Student health support plan: StudentS diagnosed with asthma and any other medical condition (requiring support at school) are required to make an appointment with the school nurse to organise a health support plan. This Plan is to be completed by the principal or nominee in collaboration with the parent/carer and student. Anchi Sherpa School Nurse

BYOD LAPTOPS BYOD devices owned by students in Year 12 or any other student who will not be returning to Belmont High School in 2018 need to be taken to IT to be decommissioned and re-imaged. Please remember to back up all data before this is done. This process will taken up to two days. Any queries can be directed to the IT Department.

EARN AND LEARN Thank you to all members of the school community for a great effort in collecting the Woolworths Earn and Learn stickers. We will have more information in the coming weeks reporting on the goods which the school will receive as a result of this campaign.

YEAR 7 AUTHOR VISIT In the last week of term 3 the Library was pleased to present guest speaker Michael Panckridge. Michael is a local writer who has had more than 30 books published. All Year 7 classes were fortunate enough to come to the Library to hear him talk about his early life as a mad-keen sportsman who hated reading (the only thing he would even contemplate reading was a sports almanac). He did become a reader later in life and when he started writing he thought of young Michael, who hated books, and decided to write fun, engaging, fast-paced sporty books that HE would have enjoyed reading. As a result, many of his books appeal to even the most reluctant readers. We have order forms available for any student (of any Year level) who would like to buy a signed copy of one (or more!) of his books. Please collect these from the Little Library and return them with cash payment by Friday 27th October. Michael’s website has information about all the books available to buy: http://michaelpanckridge.com.au/ Lee Suter Teacher Librarian

SCHOOL RAFFLE UPDATE Raffle tickets for this fundraiser have been sent home in the first week of Term 4. If you could please return the sold or unsold tickets to the school office ASAP it would be greatly appreciated.

VCE NEWS A message to the Year 12 students of 2017 and their parents: “I would like to say it has been a real pleasure in being the VCE Leader for 2017 and it has been great seeing each student develop into a mature young adult ready to take on the world. I hope the year has been one that you will always remember and that in some way I have been able to provide you with the support, guidance, and opportunities to assist you in getting to where you are now. I sincerely wish you all the best for the exams and look forward to sharing memories and events at the Graduation and later with your ATAR and other successes from year 12.

Good Luck. We are all very proud of you!

YEAR 9 DRAMA Congratulations to the Year 9 Drama students who participated in the Courthouse Youth Arts Theatre ‘The Suitcase Series’. It was impressive to see the effort put in by the Drama students in the lead up to the event (a weeks-worth of dedicated lunch-time rehearsals!) and the culmination of multiple creative minds on a final performance. Belmont High School performed a 20 minute play alongside two other Geelong Colleges before watching the same play performed by professional actors, and finished the day with a Q and A session with the Actors/Director and other theatre staff. It was a wonderful experience and I am very proud of the students for what they achieved! Izzy Perley CONGRATULATIONS Richard Egan, 12 Red, competed in his first marathon recently. Congratulations on a fantastic effort. Below is a brief personal account of his experience. “Last Sunday, after 3 hours and 36 minutes of pain I completed the Melbourne Marathon. A few highlights from the day include:

the 7:00 start.

the comradery between other runners I witnessed throughout the day, which was especially inspiring.

my fall at around 32kms (mostly my fault).

cramping so bad at 41kms that it felt like I’d been shot in the leg.

the final lap around the MCG (my personal favourite) It was truly an incredible experience, one that was worth every sacrifice.”

MUSIC NEWS The biggest event of the music calendar, our Spring Concert, was held last Tuesday at Geelong West Town Hall, and it was a fabu-lous celebration of all the music making that has been happening at Belmont High School in 2017. From the inspiring performances by our VCE students to our youngest students in Beginning Band, the evening was entertaining from start to finish. A massive thank you to everyone in the music community at Belmont who supported the evening by attending, making cakes, sell-ing tickets, helping move gear, preparing students and ensembles for performance, and of course the students themselves. A spe-cial thank you to Jarred Pagels, Jack Hudson and Callum Marriott who moved most of the equipment into the Town Hall, and to our stellar Band Captains Issy Peter, Cara Edwards, Ben Harris and Olivia Steele who kept the evening humming along so professional-ly. We farewelled 11 students who’ve given so much of their talent and energy to the music program over their time at school: Cara Edwards, Issy Peter, Ben Harris, Olivia Steele, Olivia Crichton, Lily Twyford, Sam Nolan, Berenice Duchemin, Tom Duchemin, Laura Firipis and Emily Chadwick.

We are all going to miss you ! , but hope you’ll always make a place in your life for music. Our Band Support team worked tirelessly behind the scenes, making sure everything was in place for the audience to have a great night. THANK YOU EVERYONE! This Thursday, the Intermediate Band will travel to the Geelong Show and compete in the School Bands Competition, and enjoying a little of the show atmosphere in between performances! On Thursday, the VCE VET bands will sit their performance exams, as do our VCE Solo and Investigation students over the coming weeks, and we wish them every success in their exams. Congratulations to Rhiannon Winsor, who was successful in gaining a spot in the “Foot in the Door” stage at the Queenscliff Music Festival. If you are at the festival in November, come along and cheer her on! Our theory students received excellent results in their exams in August, so congratulations to Deborah Walker, Elsa Lam, Samantha Bridges and Emily Ruge for all their hard work. Ensemble Transition Information All Beginning Band students are invited to attend a transition rehearsal next Tuesday October 24 th, after school in the Bandroom from 3.15 – 4.30pm. This is in addition to your Beginning Band rehearsal. If you cannot attend this rehearsal, please email Mrs Lin-ton via Compass to let her know. There will be no Senior band rehearsal next week due to the Art Show. The Senior Band transition rehearsal will be on October 30th, on Monday after school from 3.40 – 5.00pm. This will be followed by an important information meeting for parents and students to receive information about the Senior Band tour to Sydney in 2018. Beginning Band are preparing for their trip to the Victorian Schools Music Festival on Thursday November 16 th, so it is very im-portant that all Beginning band members attend every rehearsal so that they can give their best possible performance at the festival.

Alcohol and other drug information session for parents and carers

Hello, The Cats Just Think alcohol education program has been offered to your school and your young person may or may not have participated. Regardless, we would like to invite you to an information session that outlines the program and key messages (see below). The Just Think Program for schools We have partnered with Barwon Child, Youth and Family and worked with Deakin University School of Psychology to de-velop a day of information and activities based upon the Smart Generation alcohol education package for use in schools. The Just Think program has some very specific messages and as with Smart Generation, is informed by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Centre:

Consider having a no alcohol until 18 rule as a family policy Alcohol impacts the growing brain and can lead to lifetime deficits in memory and emotional regulation. Adolescent alcohol use increases the chances of injury, assault and motor vehicle accidents. Early uptake of alcohol can increase the chances that a person will struggle with managing their use over

their lifetime. It is illegal to supply a person under 18 with alcohol without the express permission of their parents.

Just Think aims to inform young people about the risks of alcohol use and how to minimise these risks of use to them-selves and those around them. The Just Think program does not talk to students about prescription or illicit drugs as we would not want to risk exposing someone to drugs and possibly encouraging a certain curiosity. Alcohol, we feel is different, being legal and widely pro-moted. The information night will consist of an outline of Just Think, its messaging and the reasoning behind it. We will also talk about illicit drugs and adolescent development and how to have conversation about alcohol and drugs and tips on setting family rules. If you would like a more detailed breakdown of the content, please email or call on the numbers below If you would like to attend the session, please email myself: [email protected] or feel free to contact me on 0419546265 or 5225 2480 to book in and/or discuss any aspect of the program.
