‘Quality is never an accident’New quality products are the blood that carries oxygen to the contractor professional and in Rough Construction 2011 you will find 29 pages of pertinent product information and industry insight.

With manufacturers continuing to raise the bar when it comes to building products in order to ensure a better quality home, I am reminded of a famous quote attributed to an American named William A. Foster: “Quality is never an accident. It is the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.”

This is particularly true today with the ongoing evolution of Building Codes both at the federal and provincial level relating to the many product categories you will find in this publication. These include roofing, flooring, tools, gypsum, insulation, siding, engineered lumber, asphalt surfacing and housewrap and of course an assortment of breakthrough energy efficiency offerings.

Everyone is in search of energy efficiency and as Dow notes on page 12, there is a good reason for this. The firm estimates that heating and cooling account for 63% of all residential use in Canada and “this in turn represents a significant portion of most household budgets. It is not surprising that many home buyers are highly interested in a home’s energy efficiency features.”

The company goes on to explain that energy loss can occur in many areas of the home and that two of the largest areas are the above grade exterior walls and the below grade interior and exterior basement and foundation walls.

On page 16, meanwhile, John Mansville concludes that energy efficiency “helps conserve our natural resources and reduces our carbon footprint. In fact, leveraging the proven technology of fiber glass building insulation to reduce energy consumption is one of the easiest, most cost-effective ways to minimize impact on natural resources.”

Finally, whatever your next building project entails, my hope is that the content contained in this edition of Rough Construction will truly be beneficial.

Wood swells when it gets wet. It’s a law of nature. For instance, when OSB panels are used as subfloor and it rains during the construction process, or the panels are otherwise exposed to moisture, they typically swell when water wicks into the edges. But as every builder knows, sanding subfloor is an added expense that runs at least a couple hundred dollars, to say nothing of the nuisance of scheduling the sander and dealing with the annoying chips and dust.

OSB manufacturer Ainsworth decided to tackle this issue, in an attempt to accommodate the effects of swelling before the OSB panels get on-site. Ainsworth’s technical team undertook multiple experiments to re-engineer the OSB panel edges to minimize their response to water absorption and potential swelling. It turns out that milling off a thin layer of the highly compressed surface wood fiber along the panel’s edge removes the part of the subfloor that’s most prone to swelling. In the event of natural water absorption that’s expected of all wood fiber, you can expect the resulting new Ainsworth pointSIX Flooring products to hold the wood fiber expansion to a dimension that would essentially “fill up to flush” the taper milled into the panel. As a result, it won’t require sanding, which Ainsworth actually guarantees on its premium-level product.

Theproof:aremarkable14-dayfloorTesTTo test the performance of the new T&G pointSIX subfloor products, Ainsworth performed a “flood test” on the products. They flooded the pointSIX subfloor panels with water for 14 days, simulating severe, wet

jobsite conditions. After the pointSIX subfloor panels dried, the average edge swelling was contained to just 0.01”, or 0.25mm, not much more than a sheet of paper.

That’s nothing short of remarkable performance in its own right, and a dramatic improvement over OSB alternatives that don’t have the pointSIX treatment.

Ainsworth now backs its pointSIX product line with guarantees that are unique to the industry. For Ainsworth’s superior pointSIX Durastrand Flooring, typically found in a custom home environment, Ainsworth offers a Lifetime Limited Warranty against delamination (an industry first) and a 180-day No-Sanding Guarantee. For Ainsworth’s standard pointSIX Flooring, it’s a 25-year Limited Warranty.

doesITCosTmore? No.The new APA-approved pointSIX tapering treatment is now available in two product lines: pointSIX Durastrand Flooring, an upmarket, enhanced-recipe subfloor and standard pointSIX Flooring. But with the premium performance, will there be a premium cost? No. Ainsworth believes that subfloor with edges that offset the effects of moisture should be what every dealer and builder should expect as standard, baseline performance. Accordingly, Ainsworth now offers pointSIX – with all the guarantees – for the same cost as its previous subfloor products.

Is OSB Edge Swell a Thing of the Past?

PointSIX technical illustrationThe technical team at Ainsworth determined that milling off a thin layer of the highly compressed surface wood fiber along the OSB’s edge will remove the part of the subfloor that’s most prone to swelling.

Ainsworth performed a “flood test” on pointSIX, flooding the subfloor for 14 days, simulating extreme, wet jobsite conditions. Yet the OSB experienced swelling equal to not much more than a sheet of paper.

To achieve its swell-resistant edge, Ainsworth mills the four edges using a new, patented process to achieve the unique taper.

Page 7: Rough Construction June 2011

The outlook is always sunny for builders who install pointSIX™ Flooring. And no wonder. With pointSIX Durastrand Flooring, there’s no sanding, no cost surcharge, and no headaches caused by edge swell thanks to a patented tapered-edge technology. There

are no guarantees on weather. All the more reason to choose flooring that’s guaranteed

for life. You can’t predict the weather. But you can choose better flooring.

In Canada, pointSIX Flooring and pointSIX Durastrand Flooring are available through

your local Castle Building Centre.

Cost more? No. Work better? Yes. End of story.

Heating and cooling accounts for 63% of all residential energy use in Canada.* This, in turn, represents a significant portion of most household budgets. It is not surprising that many homebuyers are highly interested in a home’s energy efficiency features. And as a bonus, “greener” homes reduce their impact on the environment. Energy loss can occur in many areas of the home. Two of the largest areas are the above grade exterior walls of the home and the below grade interior and exterior basement and foundation walls.

aboVegradeeNergylosssoluTIoNsWith STYROFOAM™ Brand CLADMATE™ and CLADMATE™ XL Insulation and integrated system components from Dow Building Solutions, homebuyers can benefit from value-added, proven, greener solutions that can help reduce energy loss and save money. Homebuilders and re-siding professionals can offer their customers enhanced energy efficiency.

STYROFOAM™ Brand CLADMATE™ and CLADMATE™ XL Insulation covers the entire exterior wall surface – helping to alleviate conditions that can lead to energy loss, including:• Air infiltration• Moisture intrusion• Thermal bridging through wood framing• Air convection in the wall cavity• Wood frame and mechanical detailing that reduce

the amount of cavity insulationAir infiltration accounts for 25-40% of the energy used for heating and cooling a typical home.** For a tight build, it is also crucial to consider the home as an overall

system that should be insulated and sealed against air infiltration through major areas (walls and roofs) as well as gaps, cracks and penetrations. In addition to rigid foam insulation, a host of integrated system components from Dow work together to help protect the home from air and moisture intrusion: • WEATHERMATE™ Plus Housewrap• FROTH-PAK™ Foam Sealant***• GREAT STUFF PRO™ Gaps & Cracks Insulating

For Construction Pros, Eco-Friendly is Business-FriendlySavvy construction professionals understand their customers’ concerns and know what to look for in eco-friendly building products:

■ No VOCs (volatile organic compounds) or CFCs (chlorofl uorocarbons), both of which deplete the ozone and contribute to the greenhouse effect

■ No other dangerous substances or chemicals like formaldehyde that can cause respiratory problems and are toxic to living creatures

■ Recyclable products that are made from recycled materials

One of the most popular renovation projects currently sweeping across Canada is the home theatre. With large screen televisions and wall-shaking surround sound speakers, renovators need to offer an affordable and “green” sound-proofi ng product. One option is Building Products of Canada Corp.’s patented acoustical sheathing product, Enermax.

Canadian designed, developed and manufactured, Enermax minimizes airborne noise by preventing interior sound from spreading room to room.

An all-natural product, Enermax is free of VOCs, CFCs, formaldehyde and other toxic substances, making it perfectly safe for humans and pets. This insulation material is also completely biodegradable so it has no negative impact on the environment. Enermax can also contribute to a home’s overall energy effi ciency, leaving far less of an environmental footprint.

Often, homeowners think of insulation, they only think about heating and cooling. But sound insu-lation is a cost-effective, simple renovation that provides an incredible difference in any home. Enermax fully delivers in both of those areas.

In today’s eco-conscious society, socially responsible renovation is an affordable option that most Canadians will choose. It not only adds value to their home, it also helps ensure that their home will be a healthier place to live for years to come. That’s how construction professionals can turn an eco-friendly message into business-friendly results.

Now more than ever, homeowners are asking their contractors to use environmentally friendly products in their home renovation projects, large and small. Today’s ecology movement has convinced them that “green” products will not only help reduce energy use, they will also make their homes safer, healthier and more enjoyable places to live.

JohNsmaNVIlleIsdedICaTedToThehealTh,ComforTaNdqualITyofThehomesyoubuIld.Johns Manville launched its building materials business over 150 years ago. Today, they operate 40 manufacturing facilities in North America, Europe and China. Based in Denver, Colorado, they are the leader in fiber glass insulation solutions and are known for their focus on healthy and safer building environments.

healThIer,saferJmCerTIfIedformaldehyde-free™fIberglassINsulaTIoN.A healthy living environment is important to all of us at home, in the workplace, in our schools and buildings. Reducing the overall amount of formaldehyde creates a healthier indoor living environment, and using JM Formaldehyde-free™ insulation is one way of achieving that goal.

Research shows that when given a choice, 89% of homeowners prefer insulation made without formaldehyde, and 79% would be willing to pay up to 10% more for it.1

eNergyeffICIeNCymaTTersCloseTohome,aNdbeyoNd.Properly insulated homes and buildings require less energy to heat and cool. That energy efficiency helps conserve our natural resources and reduces our carbon footprint. In fact, leveraging the proven technology of fiber glass building insulation to reduce energy consumption is one of the easiest, most cost-effective ways to minimize impact on natural resources.

Properly insulating and sealing air leaks is the single most cost effective way for a homeowner to save energy. It’s typically far more cost-effective than installing CFL’s or thermal windows or even buying a hybrid vehicle.

Because the Formaldehyde-free™ product line is made without formaldehyde and contains at least 50% recycled glass, JM Formaldehyde-free™ insulation is the only line of bonded fiber glass insulation that can meet the current requirements of the Environmental ChoiceM Program.

Innovative insulation solutions from JM JmeasyfIT®perforaTedfIberglassINsulaTIoNJM EasyFit® insulation features vertical perforations that allow installers to separate sections by hand, rather than cutting the insulation, to quickly and easily fit any width cavity either as a whole batt or in a combination of pre-cut widths. EasyFit batts allow contractors and installers to significantly increase their installation productivity. • Fast, easy installation – installation is 10 to 20% faster in sidewalls

Today’s insulation technology is more advanced and economical than ever. By installing the recommended amount of fiberglass insulation according to your geographical location, you may reduce your heating and cooling costs up to 32%. It pays to give some consideration to the fiberglass insulation installed in your home – for the life of your home and the comfort of your family.

Theproperr-ValueIskeyInsulation is specified by its thermal resistance, or R-value. “R” means resistance to heat flow; the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power, the greater your potential savings on heating and cooling costs.

ComforTbaTT™Roxul ComfortBatt™ is a high density batt insulation designed specifically for exterior wall thermal applications. This stone wool based insulation is made from natural stone and recycled materials, which gives it the properties that other insulations can’t match. Roxul ComfortBatt is fire resistant and can withstand temperatures up to 1177c. ComfortBatt does not develop smoke or promote flame spread, even when directly exposed to flames.

Other the past 30 years, there has been significant changes in the way people live. Houses are bigger, with more synthetics, and contain a wide variety of manufactured products. Synthetic materials are now the norm with regards to textiles, thermoplastic enclosures and engineered materials. These changes can result in faster fire growth, therefore reducing the time for a safe escape. Roxul ComfortBatt can help provide those extra minutes to escape during a fire.

Roxul has also recently launched ComfortBoard FS – a high density fire separation board for party wall construction in multi-unit housing. ComfortBoard FS reduces the time, labor and material costs normally associated with using double-layer ½” gypsum as the fire stop, and also delivers sound –absorbing qualities for increased acoustic performance. Comfortboard FS fire separation board complies with 9.10.16.3(2) of the National Building Code and exceeds the minimum density requirements.

Visit www.roxul.com for more information and to watch a fire burn video with Roxul insulation.

CaVITyroCk®-INsulaTIoNThaTdrIVesbuIldINgperformaNCeArchitects that have traditionally been specifying urethane for insulating cavity walls are discovering a better way. CavityRock® from Roxul is specifically engineered for use in cavity wall applications. Its low moisture sorption enables CavityRock to maintain R-value and allows for effective drainage of water that penetrates the exterior wall. In addition, because CavityRock is noncombustible, installation of a fire stop may not be required depending on local building codes. It’s even compatible with most air/vapour barrier systems, adhesives and wall ties.

The key is Roxul’s stone wool technology. Pioneered by Roxul’s parent company, Rockwool International, stone wool insulation has been proven in projects around the world. In fact Rockwool International is the world’s leading producer of stone wool insulation. As with all Roxul products, CavityRock is non-combustible and is able to withstand the heat of flames up to 2150° F (1177° C) without melting. CavityRock also repels water, so it won’t rot, corrode or promote the growth of fungi. It actually creates an assured drainage layer within the wall cavity. In addition, when an air barrier is used with CavityRock, it creates an effective means of controlling airflow as well as an extra layer of protection against outside moisture seeping into the envelope.

CavityRock is very easy to install and extremely versatile, so contractors can install CavityRock themselves, eliminating the need for a subtrade and increasing job profitability. Another advantage to CavityRock is its eligibility for LEED®

(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) points. The demand for more environmentally conscious buildings continues to grow and CavityRock can help builders, architects, and owners build greener structures and earn valuable LEED points. The LEED Green Building Rating System recognizes and distinguishes those builders striving to achieve projects with a lighter environmental footprint and positive impact on their communities.

All Roxul insulations are created using natural, inorganic materials with a high-recycled content. They are HCFCfree, and do not contain blowing gases which helps the environment and contributes to sustained, long-term thermal performance. Enhancing drainage while providing consistent R-value and fire protection is performance.

Earning LEED credits for green building projects is performance that goes to the wall.

Georgia-Pacific’s DensShield® Tile Backer gets a thumbs-up from contractors in the field.

If you want to know how a particular construction product really works, talk to someone who has lots of experience with it – in the field with real-time applications. Take Tony Sherman, president of Sherman Interiors http://www.shermaninteriors.com, an 18-year-old tile company in Sugar Hill, Ga. Here’s what he says about his experience with installing Georgia-Pacific’s DensShield® Tile Backer:

“More than 10 years ago, I switched from cement backer board to DensShield Tile Backer. Since then, my company has installed over 3 million square feet of DensShield on walls and floors [in over 14,000 homes]. And we haven’t had a call back yet.”

Or check out one of the many Q&A forums and blogs where construction pros talk quite honestly – no last names needed and nicknames allowed – about products and practices. On the Fix-it For ‘Em http://www.bobvila.com/wwwboard/ on BobVila.com, “Locklan” posed a question to his fellow contractors on the best type of tile backer board for an area with moisture problems. “HomePro” answered: “DensShield is the perfect product for your moisture issue. The moisture barrier has top test results.”

In the string of replies, “Thomas M” said: “Hands down DensShield is far superior to cement board, [which] allows water to pass through. It has a great acrylic moisture-proof coating . . . is easy to cut…”

Of course, knowing that a product has proven itself worthy in the field is one thing; making sure it’s used in the right applications – and installed correctly -- is another.

DensShield Tile Backer can be used on tub and shower sidewalls, ceilings, in high-humidity areas, on countertops and floors, and in appropriate fire-rated assemblies. It’s a substrate that can be used for tile and non-tile installations, in wet or dry situations. It is not appropriate for exterior walls. According to Georgia-Pacific, it’s the first board in the industry with a built-in moisture barrier and a water-resistant treated core, which prevents moisture from seeping through porous grout and damaging a wood subfloor or wall cavity. It scored a 10, the highest level of performance for mould resistance under the ASTM D 3273 test method. DensShield is GREENGUARD listed for microbial resistance, too.

Detailed installation specs and warranties are available at www.densshield.com, but here are some questions that often come up.

Q: How do I finish DensShield Tile Backer joints?

A: Apply standard two-inch 10-by-10 woven glass mesh tape over joints and angles. Then, embed the tape with the same material used to set the tiles. Do not use all-purpose drywall compound. Pull setting materials tightly over the joints to reduce crown in the joint area.

Q: To which side of DensShield Tile Backer should I apply tiles?

A: The DensShield panel should be positioned next to framing with the coated (gray) side facing away from the studs. Apply mortar or mastic and tile to the coated (gray) side of DensShield panel. The acrylic coating stops moisture penetration on the surface.

Q: Why should I apply thin-set mortar to the subfloor before putting down DensShield Tile Backer?

A: The application of thin-set over plywood eliminates any air gaps between the subfloor and the back of the panels. If this step is not completed, air gaps could cause movement and crack the grout lines or tile.

ADVICE FROM THE PROS

Page 23: Rough Construction June 2011

THE WAY TO GET AHEAD IS TO HAVE FEWER STEPS IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Let’s take it from the top. The first and only step: select DensShield® Tile Backer. Now look what follows.

Suddenly, you don’t need those special fasteners. You don’t need an extra moisture barrier–DensShield Tile

Backer’s moisture barrier is built right in. You don’t need special cutting tools, since a simple drywall knife

will do. And you won’t need mineral wool to achieve a fire rating. Someone once said, well begun is half done.

Whenever starting into a construction project, there are two objectives that everyone shares; to finish with a quality structure of sound construction, at a price point providing the best result for the money spent. To those two goals, wood construction remains one of the best materials of choice. Easily workable with readily available tools and trades, more than well-recognized by local and national codes regulations, readily available, and all at a price-point that continues to make wood-based products the on-going standard in residential and light-commercial construction.

In addition, wood-based products, as produced by socially responsible manufacturers, are one of the best environmental choices of all building materials. Unlike steel and concrete that add to the net amount of carbon in the atmosphere in their production, wood-based products capture and store more carbon from the atmosphere than is released in their manufacture. And as the timberlands from which wood-based construction products are harvested are then replanted and regenerated, more carbon is captured back out of the atmosphere, making wood the right choice for all of us.

When it comes to wood-based building materials, one of the best versions, are engineered lumber products (ELP). A family of value-added products, each specially made for a particular use in the construction project. I-Joists - manufactured in an “I” shaped section are ideal floor and roof joists, combining strength, long-lengths without bulk and added weight. Beam & Header products such as Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) Parallam Strand Lumber (PSL) and Laminated Strand

Lumber (LSL) make ideal beam, header and framing materials including tall, two-storey window walls.

Engineered Lumber Products provide very consistent strength properties, piece to piece, with none of the natural flaws of knots and grain, while being readily available in long-lengths and large sections as required by your construction project These products, combined with software design and sizing programs will greatly assist anyone on achieving the two goals of a quality project, at a good value.

Castle Dealers carry and represent the Trus Joist® brand of ELP, as produced by the Weyerhaeuser Company. Anyone from professional building contractors to do-it-yourselfers can bring a set of architectural drawings to a Castle Dealer, who can either directly, or from support by their distributor, turn the architectural drawings into a structural plan, complete with a bill-of-materials through Weyerhaeuser’s proprietary design software, Javelin®.

While often more expensive when compared on a “per-lineal-foot” basis than dimension lumber, because engineered lumber products are so reliable, designs can be optimized to various levels of quality and performance to match the target budget for the project. As a result, projects constructed with engineered lumber often can be done with fewer pieces, there by saving costs on both materials and labour in the construction.

All things considered, wood-based materials continue to be the right choice for construction, with engineered lumber products offering a superior option for both cost and quality. To find out more, see your local Castle Dealer.
