As much chance of an upset here as there is of Eddie McGuire ever apologising about anything. All Western Border netballers and anyone interested in what is going on with the players, officials and volunteers in our association are reminded to log onto our facebook page www.facebook.com/westernbordernetball to keep up with results and any other news as well as weekly photo galleries.

The association’s website should be up and running in the next fortnight. The changeover to a new system has been more problematic than originally thought but you will be the first to know when it is all up and running.

All results and other news will be available on both the facebook page and website from that point. Once again all clubs are reminded to forward any interesting news or stories, including milestones and special achievements by your members, to Di Gould at [email protected] and she can upload your information to the facebook page and website.

Don’t forget Pink Sports Day is next week (May 10) so break out the pink, rattle the tins and come up with your own ways to raise money for breast cancer.

Last week we travelled to West for Round 2. A grade had some good positives, just need to continue to lift our heads and play with confidence. Been a long time coming for A Reserve to beat West and what a fantastic game. You all stepped up and delivered! Great team effort B Grade, very consistent in attack and defence throughout the whole game. Well deserved win! C Grade got off to a messy start having to play catch for the 2nd half. All 17 & Under girls played a good defensive game and the goalies finished off well. Players adjusted to position changes well. Good to see the 15 & Under girls adapting to new positions. The defensive efforts all over the court were great and the second half was solid. The 13 & Under girls had their first win. You all worked hard and played well as a team. Well done! Under 12A achieved a fantastic win. Their disciplined defence was a key contributor to the win. Looking forward to seeing our improvements in games to come. Mary Wilson has made the South Australian U15 School girls state team, fantastic efforts and we wish her all the best.. - Daniela Waters

Well done to West Gambier for hosting the first Good Friday game which had its doubters and often we are told in life “that’ll never work” but unless people and clubs are brave enough to try new initiatives and move to create spectacle’s they won’t work. Well done to Pete and Gobbo on taking home the prize in first club 69 last man standing draw on ANZAC day. The last time those two were on a stage together also coincided with the last time the WBFL allowed reserves captains to speak into a microphone after winning a premiership. Needless to say all tickets were sold and there was an amazing show of skills, hardwork and luck with a special superhero even dropping by. The event has created a buzz and has now been instilled as an annual event. We welcome back to the kennel all those East and South supporters who join us at the Annual Fellowship dinner thank you for your support, it’s always a highlight of the clash with more football insight at the end of the dinner than the start. Best of luck to the 5 East boys that Damian Delaney worked with to assist in their SAPSASA football team being Austin Kitschke, Ben Just, Jake Biggs, Will McDonald & Henry Facy not a bad effort in a 22 kid team.

As a club we are privileged to be part of the ANZAC Day clash and once again the respect for the occasion and the strong competition on court made for another special day. It was good to see our netballers have a much more competitive outing against North than in recent history. Felicity was thrilled that her 13 and under team was able to really match it with the tough Tigers, only going down by four. The 15s came from behind for a good win with Katie and Issy getting the job done as best players in what was a great team performance. The 17s had a great day out, beating North by 10 built again on a supreme defensive effort from all seven girls on court. Liza and Megan Lawler were great through the mid court in what was a super even performance. The C grade had a super win with Tash Attiwill starring in her debut at goal defence to cover for the injured Brianna – feel free to ask her how she ended up on crutches!!!!!! The B grade suffered their second narrow loss – two goals in the first round, one in the second – logic says today should be a draw at worst. And for those that aren’t aware the A reserve had a win – despite the post match condolences from their OWN coach who thought they had lost – perhaps Lisa needs an intravenous drip of coffee to keep her alert all day. Great win girls with Toni and Kristie outstanding. Really competitive first half from the A grade but then the wheels fell off – plenty of work to do and kudos to Alyssa for doing a great job going tow to two with Audine with Nic also having a real impact. Bring on May 10 and normal game times!!!!! I know the 12bs are hanging to play at their actual allocated time and don’t forget May 10 is Pink Sports Day so we’ll be raising funds for breast cancer.

Round 2 saw us take on North in the traditional Anzac Day match. The Reserves started the day off and were quickly outgunned by North trailing by 7 goals at half time. Despite a fairly even third quarter it just wasn’t enough to overcome the early dominance and our B’s went down by 50 points. James Patzel scored two goals and Scott Fleming was our best on the field. After a rousing national anthem, the Seniors took to the field and quickly showed the Tigers what they would be up against. A very even first quarter had North with a lead of one point at the first break but South took off in the second and took a three goal lead at the main break. North came back hard in the third diminishing our lead to just three points at the end of the third quarter. Sadly that was all we had left as North stormed home with a 5 goal final quarter, taking the game by 25 points. Our main goal scorers were Brett Exelby with 4 and Ash Bryant with 2, and our BOG’s were Jak Ryan and Simon Berkefeld. Today we are under lights at the Kennel and will be looking to regain our footing against a winless East Gambier. Go Demons!

SATURDAY, May 3, 2014 “THE WESTERN”

NORTH GAMBIER champion, Scott Flett will this weekend join some of the luminaries of the Western Border Football League when he plays his 300th senior game.

Flett, who turned 36 earlier this season, has shown no signs of slowing down and has started the 2014 season in sensational form.

Now a dual premiership player after previously playing in four losing grand finals prior to the 2012-13 success the Tigers have enjoyed, Flett is a stalwart of a great football club that appears destined for even more success.

When he leads North Gambier out this Saturday against Millicent he will become the third Tiger in as many years to hit the triple ton, joining great mates, David Nulty and Garth Willoughby.

Andrew Close is a former North Gambier player and member of the famed WBFL 300 Club, but 169 of his 375 games were with cross-town rival, West Gambier.

What makes Flett's achievement even more remarkable is the fact he has never played a game in the reserves!

An in-depth account of Flett's amazing career at North appeared in The Border Watch earlier this week and current North coach, Justin McConnell should demand it as a must-read for his younger charges as it highlights what Flett has been able to achieve through sheer hard work, persistence, commitment and loyalty since breaking through for his first senior game as a skinny 16-year-old, late in the 1994 season.

Aside of Flett's two premierships, he also has a club record, seven best & fairest awards, two Western Border B&F Medals, 11 interleague representative guernseys, captain of the Tigers for eight consecutive years, Teal Cup (SA State) representation.

Playing 300 senior games will also automatically earn Flett playing life membership of the WBFL, joining such greats as Andrew Close, Mick Ryan, Wayne Fletcher, John Cunneen, Mick Jennings, Greg Stevens, Paul Beckman, Leon Kruger, Brian McGinley, Stephen Skeer, Garry Fox, John Beaton, Stewart Beaton, Trevor Sevior, Noel Doody, Renato Verbena, Adam Salmon, Trevor Younghusband, Tony Lithgow, Andrew Nitschke, Leigh Capewell, Jason Harvey, David Nulty and Garth Willoughby.

Before recapping round two, North Gambier Netball and Football Club congratulate senior netballer ‘Kerry Bilney’ on reaching her milestone 300th game today. Kerry is a tough, dedicated and dynamic team player who is a formidable sporting role model. The club is extremely proud of her success and wish her a stellar game today! Congratulations also to Meg Gazzard who plays her 50th game today. Last week’s Anzac Day clash against South produced some great wins. Well Done to Audine and her A Grade girls on another impressive win. The girls defeated South 42 to 27. Club awards winners were Abbey Duncan (Masters) and Meg Gazzard (Active 8). Special mention goes to Alannah Campbell who won her second consecutive Shirley Underwood medal for best on court. Our A Res girls went down to South by just two goals South 45 to North 43 and award winners were Maddi Day (Salon 7) and Christie McCourt (Plants on Sturt). Lisa Yates’s B Grade team got over the line by two goals (North 44 d South 42). Player awards went to Emma Kennon (Masters) and Georgia Mac (OK Pie Shop). The C Grade girls despite tireless efforts were defeated (South 51 to North 37) and the player awards were Emma Beames (Gambier City Pharmacy) and Brooke Willoughby (Active 8). Remaining Scores and awards for the day were: U17 South 41 def North 31- Graeson Kuhl (Fasta Pasta) and Sarah Hayman (OK Pie Shop) U15 South 28 def North 19 – Morgan Fisher (KFC) and Lauren Ross (Video Ezy) U13 North 26 def South 22 – Tyne Bosko (Domino’s) and Hannah Nulty (Red Rooster) 12A’s had a nice win over South – Emily Close (Hungry Jacks) and Sarah Nulty (Civic Video) 12B’s also produced a win – Tara Bryant (McDonalds) and Scout Elshaug (Wendy’s) We would also like to thank all umpires for their time and efforts volunteered.

Fantastic weather and a great spectacle of football was the order of the 12th Anzac day clash with South last week. The seniors look a little battle weary at halftime but with true anzac spirit rose to the occasion after halftime and complete and well-earned win. Great to see some of the younger brigade stand up. Great second half by tony cassidio medallist Richie OGrady, well supported by evergreen Scott Flett with other good players hamish Telford,Matt hensell, pat perry and nick mcinerney. The reserves had another resounding win although ugly after halftime.best players were Galps, hatt, hyphe, griff,Kennedy and willoughby. The u 17’s came up against well drilled unit that didn’t allow us to get our game going and they went down on the day. Best players were Matt mac,Matt Walmsley-pace ( first game), Dudley close , Christian magracia and Jordan Mansell. The under15’s came up against a well drilled South team and played well in patches but was overrun in the last quarter. Best players nick brown, max reeves, w ill Stafford, Kenny lam and Mitch Whan. Under 13’s boys played on Sunday due to Anzac Day scheduling and fought the game out valiantly with some encouraging signs against a strong south outfit. Best players samBruhn Joel Williamson Liam Pudney Ben Stanley and Harrison Kirsten. This weeks our first home game against Millicent. With milestones in both netball and football let hope for a great day with the tigers out on top. Go tigers

We travelled to Casterton last week and had a pretty successful day on the court coming away with 5 wins from 8 games. Our under 12s are continuing to improve each week; the b’s may have lost but they showed great enthusiasm and really put to practise the skills they have been learning over the pre-season. The 12A side continues to show some great skill with every girl on the court proving that they can play any position on the court. Our under 13s played tough netball all day coming away with a convincing win with Donna doing a fantastic job in mentoring the younger girls. The 15s also came away with the points but only by default as Casterton/Sandford forfeited. The 17s came away with the win in yet another close game, showing skill and determination. Both the C & B grade girls unfortunately lost however played consistent netball across all positions on the court. The A-res and A grade both came away with wins with the juniors stepping up for both teams. Today I am sure we will be pushed to the limit in some tough games against North at their home courts, let’s play hard so we come away with the points. Also Happy 18th Birthday to Melinda, have a great night! GO SAINTS!!

Bodily functions are normal and Smells can range from marvelous to horrendous and while that freshly baked cake smell is much accepted, that next day curry/red wine gaseous discharged will be scorned at. However the gas releaser gets a terrific relief and laugh at the disturbance he has created. Why does everyone ask who did it? Are there carbon tax fines? Noises in the toilet are hilarious and nobody knows why? If you are in a public toilet with several cubicles, and some are full, is the correct procedure to wait for a flush or distracting noise before you unleash Hiroshima on the enamel? If the cubicle along side you sounds like someone is ripping a bed sheet in half or the borderline speedway on a wet night, and you both complete the mission at the same time and catch a glimpse at the offending cubicle damager, do give him a tip of the head approval or a standing ovation? Hearing can be varied as that warbling bird is lovely but on a weekend morning you wish you had a rocket launcher. When your wife is telling you about her day, why after 13 seconds does your brain computer make you start thinking about “who shot Liberty Valance” and why feet have toes? This glitch can get you in trouble later when you forget to pick up that kid or ask a question minutes later and she says I told you before! Sight can vary depending on the time of day. Late at night something lovely can easily become horrid in the morning. Do you think this is where they got the idea for Cinderella? Perhaps Hotondo homes should have a house plan that has a “been drinking”room with no lighting or windows? Neil Brown

NEW

S

last week we hosted our first home game for 2014. Things were a little bit quiet, especially as the day wore on, with there being no senior footy. We had a day where the East girls certainly had the better of us, winning only the A and C grades for the day. We did, however, celebrate a fantastic milestone, with Lauren Holmes suiting up for her 200th game in the A res. Lauren has moved through the juniors, and has cemented her spot in the A res side over the past few seasons. She also made her umpiring debut down at Millicent - where from all reports she did a sterling job! Also good (??) to see the old girl don the uniform in the B grade - not sure how the muscles pulled up for the rest of the week!! Today we are again at home, playing host to the new Casterton/Sandford outfit. There will be teas up at the club and awards from 6.00pm. Please come along and support the club, and enjoy a great value meal and drink with your teammates. Thanks to all our wonderful sponsors, who make it possible to reward our best players each week, and remember players - please support all these fantastic businesses that support us each and every week. Good luck to everyone today!! Last week’s results: A Grade: West 58 def East 43 Best: Kahli and Amy, A res: West 35 lost East 51 Best: Sophie and Sammi, B Grade: West 49 lost East 55 Best: Georgia and Hannah, C Grade: West 43 def East 38 Best: Bec and Dee S, 17’s West 13 lost East 46 Best: Tahlia and Olivia, 15’s: West 19 lost East 32 Best: Georgia and Hannah I, 13’s: West 7 lost East 33 Best: Taylor and Hannah W, 12’s: West 1 lost East 33 Best: Emily D and Ella

Well, the experiment of Good Friday worked…. we think! The Gate for just two grades of footy was up about 30% on last year’s round against East. Thanks to James and his club for helping us support this day. Next year will be their turn and with lights capable of night games… who knows? The Seniors had a good win against a dogged East, who proved they will be no pushover this season. Tommy Holmes was our best followed by Elliott King, Brad Wilson, Steve Wenman, Rohan Fox and Levi Morton. Nic Allen kicked 3 Levi 2 as did Brad W. The Reserves had a cracker of a game with their Bulldog counterparts, unfortunately falling at the last hurdle, going down by less than two straight kicks. Lachlan Wookey was best in the ruck, Keanu Hawke must be knocking on the door of a senior game, Doug Lloyd, back from Uni, and Luke Patching were our best. Niall Easterbrook with 4 and Garrett Ha with 2 were main contributors. The next Saturday wasn’t as good for us, with results with the U/17 losing an entertaining and skilful game. Whoever said we haven’t recruited this year is right…. They are already in our backyard! Kyle Giddings, Aden Pfitzner, Ryan Hosking, Liam Beckman and Lewis Lean were our best, with Jackson Lock with 3 goals. The U/15’s were under siege by a very slick East outfit. Bailey Vonduve was our best for 4 qtrs, with Braidon Frost, Squiz Taylor, Shane De Jong and Jake Brown all battling under tremendous odds. The U/13 got off to a flier, but were pegged back East in the finish… Braeden Burston, Seth Lock, Reid Kuller , Lachie Jones and Brayden Olds were best with Mitchell Hann slotting 3

SATURDAY, May 3, 2014 “THE WESTERN”

Ask any player that has had to go toe to toe with North Gambier’s Kerry Bilney and they’ll tell you it was a

tough day at the office. Known for her strong work ethic and her ability to run all day, Kerry is one of the toughest competitors in the competition. Tight checking as a defender, Kerry has always ensured her opponent earns every possession and she is a player who has the ability to create a turnover just when it’s needed. A wing defender that nullified many a quality wing attack and a hard running centre, Kerry has returned in 2014 after a season off to have her first child – a daughter Payton. She is part of North’s A reserve line-up at the moment, after being an integral part of the A grade team for most of her senior career. This weekend against competition pacesetters Millicent, Kerry will clock up her 300th outing in the yellow and black after starting with the club as a junior in 1996. She was part of the North Gambier A grade premiership three-peat from 2003-’05 and played in four consecutive A Reserve premierships from 1999 – 2002. The consummate team player, Kerry has still collected plenty of individual accolades, including runner-up A grade club best and

fairest 2008 and ’11, and taking out the best & fairest in 2010. Those senior accolades, which also included the 2002 A Reserve club best & fairest, added to her 1996 15 & under club best & fairest, as she also represented Western Border as well in that same year and then again as a senior player from 2005 – ’07.Club legend Sue Sidebottom, who played alongside Kerry and coached her as well couldn’t speak highly enough of the Tiger with the never say die attitude.” Kerry was always an incredibly committed, reliable and hardworking player who would do and try anything to help her team to be successful,” Sidebottom said. Kerry now joins her mentor in the 300 club. Both are also life members of the proud club – Kerry being inducted last year.Marelle Bruhn is another Tiger great who has played alongside Kerry and coached her was also full of praise for the hard working midcourter. “Since beginning her netball career as a junior many years ago Kerry Bilney has been a loyal and dedicated member of the North Gambier Netball Club,” Bruhn, the current Western Border Netball Association president said. “As a player Kerry can be described as tenacious, committed, team-orientated, well prepared, skilful and courageous – all attributes of a fine netballer and qualities which epitomise the fighting tiger spirit at North Gambier. “Kerry was a pleasure to coach with her unwavering dedication to the team, her meticulous preparation, her ability to push through any obstacles which arose and to lift the entire team by leading by example.

300 Game Milestone - Kerry Bilney - North Gambier Cont.

Mary Wilson earns State call up

“As a team mate one could not ask for anyone more determined and dedicated to the team cause and as a result of her commitment Kerry has been fortunate enough to have been involved in numerous memorable premierships throughout her long career at North Gambier. “Kerry has been a loyal servant of the North Gambier Netball Club by taking on committee roles and has coached several different grades over the years, passing on her years of knowledge to many others. “ It has been an absolute pleasure to watch Kerry’s netball career develop from the early days up until today – 300 games later.”Kerry has been a coach of North’s15 & 13 & under tams on four occasions and served on the committee for a total of eight years over her 300 game career. Her 2012 coach Michelle Hosking was another keen to sing the praises of Kerry as the milestone approached. “Kerry is one of those girls you love to have in your side,” Hosking said. “She is a fierce competitor and never shies away from a challenge. “Kerry is dedicated to her team mates and gives her everything at training. “On court, Kerry is an experienced centre court player, a great steadier, with brilliant passes. “She is a huge part of the North Netball Club and 300 games is a fantastic achievement.”The congratulations have also come from opposition clubs with Millicent icon Donna Denton describing Kerry as a tenacious midcourter. “I'd like to congratulate Kerry on her 300th game milestone,” Denton said. “ Kerry was a key part of North's A grade premierships in 2003, 2004, 2005 playing mainly at wing defence and her ability to shut down her opponent, read the play and be a reliable attacker are her biggest assets. “She is very well respected around the league for her tough but fair nature on court and always displays great sportsmanship. “I'm sure the North Gambier Netball club would be extremely proud of Kerry's wonderful achievements and contributions she has made to their club and the whole league.”

Young East Gambier shooter Mary Wilson has just been named in the South Australian Under 15 Schoolgirls State Netball team.Mary received the good news at last Sunday’s final selection trial in Adelaide.Check out the gallery of Mary in action around the Western Border netball courts in the past couple of seasons on our Lifestyle1 facebook page.Mary has been a key part of East Gambier’s proud tradition of scooping the pool of junior premierships in the past few seasons.
