Golf Inventions That Have Changed The Game

Continued on page 4

The world of golf has seen a lot of changes evolving from a simple outing to an analytical and tactical masterpiece. Most of these changes have been initiated by inventions that have revolutionized the way the game is played. From altering the club head to creating novel tees to patenting an infrastructure for that perfect swing, golf inventions have come a long way. Here are some of the most interesting inventions that have taken golf as a pastime sport to an elevated level of professionalism and continued gadgetry.Golf Ball Launcher

A lot of people, especially the elderly do not play golf due to muscular or limb inoperability or weakness in the same. The golf launcher takes the game to a whole new level as you can use the shotgun-like launcher and the allied 12v mini-hand-pump with ease. Now you only have to have your logistics right as you aim to hit the hole in the best trajectory possible.

WassupThe 1999 Nike ad that had Tiger Woods dribbling a ball on the head of his club for what seemed to be an eternity, has in fact led to another invention in golf. An 18-inch string with an attachable plastic clip for the club hosel, nothing now can stop you from becoming a professional dribbler with this invention.Green (Solar) Golf BuggyTouted the Best New Prod-uct of the year 2009 at Pro-fessional Golfer’s Associa-tion Merchandise Show in Florida, the Green Golf Buggy run by solar panels is one of the most cost-effi-cient and eco-friendly golf carts invented yet in the professional golfing indus-try today.Golf Ball Lifting ApparatusPreventing golfers from back strain or unnecessary stress, the golf-ball lifting apparatus is a simple golf ball carriage that can be inserted into a golf hole (with-out digging or scraping around). When a ball falls into the cup, the carriage automatically ascends to a pre-de-termined height and allows the golfer to take the ball, eliminating the need to bend down.

Light-Emitting BallHow many times have you lost a golf ball while playing in the dark, especially in the dusk? And with the esca-lating prices of golf balls, this is quite a hazard for pro-fessional golfers practicing well after sunset. Therefore, the light-emitting ball, with a light module inserted within and a timer set, the ball can never get lost even in the darkest of conditions.Low-Error Golf BallsThe shallow dimples of a golf ball are not to make it look good but have a lot to do with performance. The dimples help the ball get struck better and also allow it to cover more distance by streamlining the air flow around. However, as recent studies have suggested that grooves in the golf balls can help the performance become sharper, the latest golf ball to do the rounds in the professional golfing market is the grooved golf ball, developed in the Seoul National University, Ko-rea.Swing Thoughts WristbandAlthough more of a luxury than a necessity, the swing thoughts wristband is supposed to help the golfer focus on the swing rather than anything else through content matter on it.

Golf Inventions— Continued

Golf Swing Muscle StrengthenerThe golf swing muscle strengthener is a large appara-tus, modeled to help the professional golfer master the swing before hitting the ball. Designed such that the muscles used in swinging the golf club is strengthened and fine tuned to perfection, the apparatus contains a swing arm assembly based on a platform that has an-other vertical apparatus offering resistance. For those who think that a stronger arm might help them per-form better in golf, this is the invention to try out.The world of golf has been enriched by some of the most intelligent and zealous inventions and by the afore-mentioned examples, we can easily understand that the spate of inventions and innovations have no intention to stop anytime soon!

• July 13, 1936. The Bears in Yellowstone National Park are called to their meals

with a dinner bell. The Bear feeding grounds at Old Faithful were eliminated and reestablished at Yellowstone Canyon, and all that was necessary to trans-port the bears to their new lunch counter was to transfer the bells and the food.

• August 4, 1936. George Wilderspin, a Texan cowboy, roped a cub bear in Yellowstone National Park. The mother of the cub chased the cowboy, who dropped the rope and ran. The cowboy was arrested and fined $50. He could not pay, so was sent to jail for 25 days

Pelican Bay (Brookings) For a number of years, "Cleft of the Rock" was the only official pri-vate lighthouse on the Oregon Coast. That all changed when Bill Cady decided to have a lighthouse added onto his cur-rent home in 1990. Then in 1997, Mr. Cady moved the

home to its current location, perched on the cor-ner of a 100 foot cliff above the Pacific Ocean. This octagonal tower is 141 feet above the ocean and can be seen from as far as eleven miles away. After receiving approval from the federal govern-ment, this house was lit for the first time at 11:03

pm on July 4th, 1999. The lamp is a fixed acrylic Fresnel lens. It turns on at dusk and off at dawn.Cape Arago ( C h a r l e s t o n )

-Cape Arago’s tower is 44 feet high, and was illu-minated in 1934. However, there were two other lighthouses built earlier on Cape Arago. The first tower was lit on November 1, 1866, and was Or-egon’s second lighthouse in operationUmpqua River (S. Reedsport) The Umpqua River, an area of diverse countryside, was ex-pected to be a central region for trade in Or-

egon. As a result, the first lighthouse along the Oregon coast was located on the north spit of the Umpqua Riv-er. Its light began to shine six miles south of Reedsport on October 10, 1857.Heceta Head (N. Florence) Heceta Head is named after the Spanish explorer Bruno de Heceta, who explored the Pacific Northwest during the late 18th century.Cape Blanco (N. Port Orford) This Lighthouse lit its lamp on December 20th, 1870. Cape Blanco is a spur that stretches one and a half miles off the Oregon Coast. At the end of it, Cape Blanco’s lighthouse sits majestically on a 200 foot cliff.Yaquina Bay (Newport) listed on the National

Register of Historic Places in the United States of America. Cleft of the Rock lighthouse is privately owned and not open to the public, you can see the lighthouse Highway 101 near mile marker 166 on the north-

1st Cape Meares Oceanside

There are eleven lighthouses standing strong along the Oregon coast. Many of these have been restored, and offer a look back into Oregon's past. Two of them, Cleft of the Rock Lighthouse and Pelican Bay Lighthouse, were created by lighthouse enthusiasts.

The American Paint Horse Association

The American Paint Horse has a history unlike any other breed in the world. Once disregarded by some for its bold markings, that very characteristic makes each Paint Horse a one-of-a-kind favorite with thousands of proud APHA members today. In fact, the American Paint Horse Association is the world’s second-largest equine breed association. The American Paint Horse’s combination of color and stock horse conformation is not the breed’s only noteworthy attributes—Paints are also valued for their temperaments, versatility and athletic ability. While the colorful coat pattern is essential to the iden-tity of the breed, American Paint Horses have strict bloodline requirements and a distinctive stock-horse body type. To be eligible for registry, a Paint’s sire and dam must be registered with the American Paint Horse Association, the American Quarter Horse As-sociation, or the Jockey Club (Thoroughbreds). To be eligible for the Regular Registry, the horse must also exhibit a minimum amount of white hair over unpig-mented skin. Each Paint Horse has a particular combination of white and any color of the equine spectrum: black, bay, brown, roan, buckskin, dun, gray, grullo, perlino, smoky cream, chestnut, cremello, palomino, red dun, sorrel, or champagne. Markings can be any shape or size, and located virtually anywhere on the Paint’s body. Paints’ coat patterns are also varied—Paint Horses are either overo, tobiano, tovero or solid. These colors, markings and patterns, combined with stock-type conformation, athletic ability and agreeable dis-position, make the American Paint Horse an invest-ment in quality. The American Paint Horse Association was founded in 1962. With only a few hundred horses registered by the end of that year, the association now boasts more than one million Paint Horses and records new regis-trations at the rate of about 15,000 per year.Tobiano(pronounced: tow be yah’ no)The dark color usually covers one or both flanks. Gen-erally, all four legs are white, at least below the hocks and knees. Generally, the spots are regular and dis-tinct as ovals or round patterns that extend down over the neck and chest, giving the appearance of a shield. Head markings are like those of a solid-colored horse--solid, or with a blaze, strip, star or snip. A tobiano
