Route du BonheuR "60 YeaRs of Relais & Châteaux"Created in 1954, reinvented in 2014 for the 60th Anniversary of Relais & Châteaux

The Route du Bonheur has been part of the DNA of Relais & Châteaux

since 1954, when the fi rst gourmet route was created to link the eight

founding properties along the famous Nationale 7.

The Relais & Châteaux Owners, Maîtres de Maison and Chefs are the ambassadors

of this Route and accompany you for the (re)discovery of their region. They have lived in the

region many years and it remains close to their hearts. They tread its paths daily, know all its

secret secrets places, hold the keys to its treasures… Who better to share with you the most

beautiful regions of the world?

“One day the Route du Bonheur will span the world” was the claim of the fi rst ad by Relais

& Châteaux – today it has become a reality. Relais & Châteaux boasts more than 60 Routes

du Bonheur on the fi ve continents: Peru, from Lima to lake Titicaca via the Machu Picchu;

discovery of the Cyclades in Greece by boat; the Mont-Blanc by Grand Chef Emmanuel

Renault; the Canadian West Coast from Lake Louise near Calgary to Vancouver; Japan from

Kobe to Osaka…let’s go!

The Routes du BonheurMythic – Authentic – Unique

Route du Bonheur “60 Years of Relais & Châteaux”

The story of our Maison was written alongside that of Relais & Châteaux. My father, Pierre Troisgros, was an active member of the Association for a long time. He initiated the development of Relais de Campagne and the French haute cuisine. This wonderful idea was at the heart of the creation of Relais Gourmands, a label that identifi ed the Association’s best restaurants, and promoted the chefs.Located in Roanne, across from the train station, our property was one of the few provincial Relais & Châteaux located in a city.Roanne was - and still is - on the Nationale 7, the “Sun Route” sung and painted by the greatest artists. In 1954, it was a major axis, a straight North-South line that ran through city and village centres, and created endless traffi c jams during the holidays…Today, the Nationale 7 plays hide-and-seek with the GPS and any detours you might wish to make. Trying to follow it could be mind-teasing. You can still fi nd the twin-lines of plane trees, abandoned service stations, and traces of the painted ads of the day on the walls of old farms. After Jean-Baptiste, after Jean and Pierre, after us, our sons César and Léo will probably take our place…In a short time, in a noble and agricultural area, not too far from the Roanne train station, our Maison will take a new form. We’re in the habit of saying that the nice weather follows the Nationale 7. So, I invite you to follow us along the Route du Bonheur…

Auberge des Templiers, BoismorandAs the starting point of the fi rst Route du Bonheur in 1954, l’Auberge des Templiers is the memory keeper of Relais & Châteaux. Sixty years later, the magnifi cent half-timbering, red bricks, and fl oral park located at the footsteps of the Loire Valley and Sologne provide an unchanging image of the Association’s spirit. “In the beginning, the Route du Bonheur allowed its members to become better known”, recalls the owner Philippe Dépée. “With time, the two became closer. As with any association that lasts, it’s just as much the members who forge the identity as the association that infl uences the identity of its members”.

Close to the property…The Sancerre and Pouilly Vineyards“The cellar has always been one of the Auberge’s most important places”, says Philippe Dépée. “I like the vineyard work. Perhaps because like mine, it’s done with love of the place, of the land, and the insistence on excellence”. On both banks of the Loire River, the Sancerre and Pouilly vineyards offer their most beautiful colours. Some of the fi nest Sauvignons blancs and Pinots noirs in the country are produced here. The fi nestwines are to be found on the restaurant menu of the Auberge, run by Grand Chef Yoshi Miura.

The Briare AqueductIt is described as “an Eiffel Tower of the waterways”. For over a century, the steel Briare aqueduct was the longest in the world. Built between 1890 and 1896, today the construction rises over the River Loire and the old lateral canal dug out during the reign of Henri IV. At the time, Briare was an important site of the river traffi c. Today, it’s the leisure boats that take advantage of this stunning scenery. Looking at the boats from high above, you feel like you’re fl ying…

Mythical residence with a contemporary spirit

Maison Troisgros, RoanneWhen my grandfather Jean-Baptiste decided to move to Roanne in the thirties, the city was fl ourishing because of the textile industry. While the textile business may no longer be what it was, we have remained faithful to the city. Here, the produces are beautiful and varied - between the plain, the river, the lakes, the forests, and the mountains. Located opposite the train station since 1930, our Maison will move a few steps away in 2017. Just because tradition, to last, must renew itself…

Close to the property…The Hervé Mons Tunnel, AmbierleHervé Mons is a good friend and one of the best maîtres affi neurs (experts in cheese ripening). A Meilleur Ouvrier de France (Best Craftsman in France), he knows all the country farms inside and out, traditions, and expertise. Over the years, he has become a reference in the profession. Over a hundred producers from all around France and elsewhere entrust the ripening and marketing of their cheeses to him.

The Livestock Market, Saint Christophe en BrionnaisIt’s a beautiful trip through wooded countryside interrupted here and there by villages proud of their Romanesque churches. Every Wednesday, at noon, the market attracts a number of Charolais breeders who present their livestock for sale. More than 70,000 animals are sold here annually.

The Côte Roanne vineyard Shared by fi fty independent wine growers, this vineyard has enjoyed an AOC appellation since 1994. My father worked for a long time with Robert Sérol in Renaison. Today, I share “Les Blondins”, a two-hectare property with Gamay vines, with his son, Stéphane Sérol.

Lyon Contemporary Art BiennalePassionate about artistic creation, I never miss the Lyon Contemporary Art Biennale. The fi rst one was held in the early ‘90s in the Halle Tony Garnier. In 2015, the American Ralph Rugoff will act as the curator of the Biennale.

VONNAS2 DAYS, 2 NIGHTS

The Georges Blanc Hotel Restaurant, Vonnas“Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Relais & Châteaux in Vonnas is even more moving for me as I’m certainly the last living witness of the fi rst Route de Bonheur drawn together at my uncle’s on12 May 1954”, reminisces Georges Blanc. The Blanc family not only founded an institution, they created a village entirely dedicated to the art of living and gastronomy. With over 135,000 bottles, the property also holds one of the most beautiful cellars in the world.

Close to the property…Musée départemental de la Bresse, Domaine des Planons, Saint-Cyr-sur-MenthonSet in a magnifi cent 18th-century farm extended by a contemporary-style building, this museum dedicated entirely to Bresse heritage presents rich collections including costumes, jewellery, and local food specialities. Devoted to the region, Georges Blanc helped set up a real on-site Bresse poultry farm. A vegetable garden was also re-created. In 2014, a large exhibition is dedicated to the Bresse enamels worn by fashionable aristocratic ladies of the 19th century.

Hameau du Vin, Romanèche-ThorinsFrom the vine-growing process to the wine-making process, you can explore the whole world of wine in this hamlet created by Georges Duboeuf in the heart of the Beaujolais. In fi fty years, this passionate man has gone from simple bottler to one of the biggest Beaujolais wine merchants. The story of the vineyards and of the wine unfolds throughout almost 30,000 m2 of park and exhibition sites. Two thousand years of history and expertise, concentrated in a glass of wine to taste.

Parc des Oiseaux, Villars les DombesGrey-crowned Cranes, Dalmatian Pelicans, Scarlet Ibises, Rainbow Lorikeets, Cockatoos, and Marabou Storks… There are so many bird species to observe in this 35-hectare park set in the heart of a bird sanctuary. There’s a very beautiful show of birds born and raised here that allows you to admire the birds in fl ight.

LES BAUX DE PROVENCE 2 DAYS, 2 NIGHTS

L’Oustau de Baumanière, Les Baux de Provence “I was born in 1945, the year my grandfather Raymond Thuilier created l’Oustau de Baumaniere”, explains the famous starred chef Jean-André Charial. “My family very quickly became involved in the Relais & Châteaux story - from a few properties along the Nationale 7 in the ‘50s, to its current expansion across the continents”. During these sixty years, L’Oustau de Baumanière became a must-visit destination, frequented by personalities like Brigitte Bardot, General De Gaulle, and the Queen of England.

Close to the property…Le Moulin Castelas, Les Baux de ProvenceThe Moulin Castelas is where Jean-Benoît Hugues produces perhaps the best olive oil of the Baux-de-Provence valley. On the 45 hectares extending along the sun-kissed slopes of the Alpilles four varieties of olive are grown: Aglandau, Grossane, Salonenque, and Verdale. Jean-Benoît works his oil like wine, with the same passion and precision. Here, at the Moulin Castelas, the fruit transforms into an elixir.

Carrières de Lumières, Les Baux de ProvenceOn this exceptional site of the old Baux quarries, the works of the most prestigious artists are presented. Filmed in 1959 in Cocteau’s The Testament of Orpheus, the quarries make an extraordinary setting today. There’s more than 6,000m2 of space where shows are projected, featuring the paintings of Gauguin, Monet or Van Gogh. In 2014, Klimt and Vienna will have the place of honour.

L’Affectif, le vin de Jean-André CharialOn the Lauzières Estate, in an isolated little valley in the south of the Alpilles, Jean-André Charial produces a rosé or red wine named “L’Affectif”. Why L’Affectif? This designation goes back to a conversation with my friend Wolinski about a politician. “He’s driven by the affective”, he told me. I remembered this term for the fi rst vintage of this new red wine that I adore, and which boasts notes of prunes, blackberries or red berries.

La Chèvre d’or, Èze“The history of La Chèvre d’Or is closely linked to that of Relais & Châteaux. Their DNA is similar”, explains Maître de Maison Thierry Naidu. La Chèvre d’Or opened its doors on the cliff of Eze in 1953, and joined the prestigious Association only three years later. Hidden behind solide old stone walls lies the refi nement and elegance of La Chèvre d’Or. Away from the public eye, the big blue sea is all yours…

Close to the property…Nietzsche’s Path, ÈzeThey say that the famous philosopher who once lived nearby conceived the third part of his monumental Thus Spoke Zarathustra along path that now bears his name. Following the steps of Friedrich Nietzsche, you can walk between the low, dry stone walls, and the cypress and bougainvillea trees, all mixed with the fragrance of myrtle and rosemary. The Mediterranean gives itself freely to a perfect postcard setting.

Rothschild’s Ephrussi Villa, Saint-Jean-Cap-FerratTransformed into a museum by 1938, this magnifi cent Renaissance-style palace is one of the most impressive monuments of the French Riviera. A great collector of art, its owner Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild was known for her refi ned tastes. Inside the villa, one can still explore the baroness’s living rooms and apartments, that house an exceptional collection of French porcelain. Be enchanted by one of the nine “remarkable” gardens (as classifi ed by the Ministry of Culture in 2005), which cover almost seven hectares.

The Maeght Foundation, Saint-Paul-de-VenceModern and contemporary art fi nds its most generous ambassadors here. With this incredible building, Aimé and Marguerite Maeght provided an exceptional setting for the works of artists like Giacometti, Chagall, Miro, Léger, and Braque. The Foundation will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and will revisit the masterpieces that marked its history….
