From the Pastor’s Desk Signs of Love! One of the most crucial areas of preparation for young couples seeking the sacrament of marriage is communication. Some people might be surprised by this fact, thinking that the church’s teachings about the marriage state or the spirituality of married life would be most important. The simple fact is, that a couple that does not communicate well with each other on the deeper level of sharing their concerns and feelings about themselves as well as their future spouse do not communicate well with God. This is not to say that they don’t pray but it is to ask; for what are they praying. A couple that expresses their love for each other in words and those obvious actions of love (like the giving of flowers) without giving of their deeper selves will soon find their relationship in jeopardy. The same holds true for our relationship of love with God in Jesus. To do the obvious expressions of love, like talk about how we love Jesus without offering our true concerns to the Lord about ourselves, our sinfulness, our weaknesses, and those ugly things we like to leave hidden will sooner or later leave us in a stale relationship with God. The need for contemplation that is, sitting in silence without Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, TV or radio; simply waiting on God is a must for every Christian. Not even words are needed. God hears our sighs and acknowledges our tears. God already knows what we want. How can we know what God wants when we don’t give ourselves time to listen? One sure sign of our love for God is the time you and I spend with God opening up the deepness of our hearts to God and being open to God communicating with us. At Mass, we give some example of this need for silence. The silence between the Scripture readings and after communion is not a “waste of time;” it is time for you and me to direct our thoughts to what we have just heard or the great Gift we have just received. This is uncomfortable to some people, so accustom are we to one type of noise or another filling every moment of our day. Silence gives us a chance to do more than think but to reflect; to give ourselves time to let God speak to each of us in our hearts. Sacristan Position Open. The sacristan position is a part time paid position working 20-25 hours a week. Persons interested in this position need to be familiar with the basics of the Catholic faith and the liturgy. They need to be able to receive Holy Communion. The position involves lifting and some physicality so persons interested must be able to lift 50 lbs. (a case of altar wine). Persons also need to be organized and have an ability to work with and supervise volunteers. If you are interested, please contact Fr. Marty, Fr. Gregory or Deacon Ron for a detailed job description.

Respect Life Ministry News

40 Days For Life Campaign

The Respect Life Ministry would like to remind everyone that there are 7 days (168 hours) left of the 40 Days for Life Prayer Campaign sponsored by Lake County Right To Life. The 40 Days for Life is a prayer campaign held world wide with a vision to access God’s power through prayer, fasting and peaceful vigil to end abortion. If you would like to take part in this 40 Days for Life Campaign, consider joining other pro-lifers “on the hill” at Planned Parenthood in Merrillville anytime between 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM for a peaceful, non-confrontational prayer vigil to pray for the end of abortion. There are 168 hours left of this campaign; can you give just 1 hour to stand up for life?

Peaceful vigil is not the only way to participate in this prayer campaign. If you cannot participate at Planned Parenthood perhaps you would be able to attend Ado-ration on Wednesdays, 1:00-6:00 PM, or just praying and fasting in your own home.

Today, Oct. 28th is the last chance to turn in those old shoes.

Containers are located in the gathering space and

by the chapel door. We would like to

thank everyone for their participation in this

very worthwhile project.

Dear St. Michael Family, First of all, I am so sorry that I’m writing this thank you to all of you so late, but it is sent with no less meaning and thoughtfulness. Deacon Jack truly loved receiving all of your thoughts and prayers, your cards, and mass card intentions. All of the cards that the children at St. Michael’s created were up on his bulletin board and displayed for him to see every day. He appreciated the time and talent that each of the children put into creating these beautiful cards. Daily he enjoyed receiving the cards and would love when the mail was delivered. A special thank you to Fr. Marty, Fr. Gregory, Deacon Ed, and Deacon Ron, for their support and guidance during this difficult journey. And to Father Marty who flew out to Texas to anoint Deacon Jack and then saying mass for Deacon Jack in our home after we made our twenty-hour journey back home via ambulance from Texas, as he was not able to fly due to the strokes he had. We were very appreciative and thank all of the Sisters of St. Michael’s convent who came to our home and prayed over Deacon Jack daily once he arrived back home. Thank you to Joan Hamnik and her team of sacristans who were cleaning the pews the morning of his wake. Thank you to Michaeline Gargas and Debbie Fotia for their guidance and support. I appreciated the calls and text messages supporting me during our six months living in Texas. Thank you to Rob and Sylvia Guetzloff and those of you who prepared and served the food at the wake service and Betty Hlad and her team of parishioners that prepared and served his funeral luncheon. We received many compliments on how everything was so delicious, along with the beautiful flowers that decorated the hall. Thank you to Debbie Mangione and the choir who sang so beautifully. Thank you to the Knights of Columbus who stood guard at Deacon Jack’s wake. Thank you to everyone who visited with us at the wake and funeral. The line never stopped at the wake for the entire five hours, which shows just how many lives Deacon Jack had touched. Thank you to the altar servers for serving at his mass as I know this had to be difficult for them. We cannot even begin to thank all of you enough for everyone’s team work in getting the church ready for his wake and funeral amongst the construction taking place. May God Bless each and every one of the parishioners at St. Michael Parish for the love and support we received during this difficult journey.

With Love and Gratitude, Michelle and Jacklyn Krol and The Family of Deacon Jack Krol

THE WORD (Readings for November 4, 2018, Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time)

I. Deuteronomy 6:2-6 Moses told the people they must follow God’s law. Above all they must know that the Lord alone is God, and they must love the Lord with all their heart, soul and strength.

II. Hebrews 7:23-28 Before Jesus all the priests died and had to be replaced, but, “because He

remains forever,” His priesthood does not pass away. Jesus saves “those who approach God through Him.”

III. Mark 12:28b-34 The greatest command is this: Love the Lord your God with all your heart,

soul, mind and strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself.

Dear Parish Members, Our Sunday bulletin is a primary way we use to communicate with you. The parish does not pay for the bul-letin printing because of the generosity of our advertisers-many of which are our own parish members. Most are members of our local community. Please support our advertisers with your patronage. Let the business owner know that you appreciate their support of our parish through their advertising in the bulletin.

A strong and vibrant parish is good for our community and a strong business community is good for our parish.

If you would like to advertise in our bulletin, please call Barbara at 219-427-4803.
