Welcome To Tyler County!

Tyler County is a progressive community located at the crossroads of US Highways 69 and 190, approximately 60 miles north of Beaumont, Texas. The county has a popula-

tion of over 20,000 residents resulting in a population density of 22.30 residents per square mile. That low population density means a lot of beautiful country and recreational possibil-ities. You can explore some of those recreational opportunities in the pages of this magazine. Tyler County has something for every member of the family to enjoy, from fishing and camping at nearby Steinhagen Lake, to turn of the century (that’s the 19th and 20th cen-turies) themed Heritage Village and Museum, Allan Shivers Library and Museum which houses memorabilia of former Texas Governor Allan Shivers, a rapidly expanding Cultural Arts District with an Art Gallery featuring the works of 125 artists. Tyler County also has events year round for visitors of all ages, including the Annual Tyler County Dogwood Festival which attracts thousands of visitors each year over three weeks in late March and early April. During the summer months, you can cool off at Lake Tejas in Colmesneil. Colmesneil also offers tours of the historic Colmesneil House and a railroad museum. There are plenty of places to stay while you are here, including two motels and eleven (yep, that’s 11) Bed & Breakfasts in the county. And we have excellent restaurants to enjoy meals. Whether you are looking for a place to tour and vacation that’s close to home, or you are looking for a new place to settle down in a beautiful rural setting, come on down and take a look at what we have to offer. You’ll find a lot of friendly folks, too!

An Art Gallery in Tyler County? Visitors to Tyler County are often surprised to find out that there is not only a Gallery, but also a thriving art community!

Over the last few years, the county, and Woodville, has claimed fame as the newest art community in South East Texas, and has a growing Cultural Arts District anchored by the Tyler County Fine Art Centre & Gallery and the Emporium For The Arts.

The art gallery is the showcase for the Tyler County Art League, an organization which has grown over the last seven years from a gathering of nine artists back in 2003 to a membership of 475 today. The Art League completed the purchase of the gallery building last year, and is now focusing on upgrading the facility.

The gallery is filled with art representing 125 artists with work crossing many genres, from painting and sculpture to photography and pottery. Whatever your interest in art, you will probably find it represented in the gallery.

The Art League is working hard in 2012 to expand its service to the community by expanding its mission of education. They will be bringing more artists into the schools to work with students and art teachers. Several county schools have strong arts programs, and the League wants to sup-port that effort.

The League will also continue to support the artists, and plans to enhance their offerings by offering live artist demonstrations, promoting “open studio” opportunities, and other innova-tive opportunties in addition to the many art and music classes they currently offer at the Gallery.

The Art Gallery is located at 210 W. Bluff (Hwy. 190 west) in Woodville and is open Tuesday through Saturday.

Emporium For The Arts

The Emporium for the Arts is younger than the Gallery, but in the time it has been around has made a signficant contribution to the arts

in Tyler County. A seperate organization from the Art League, the Emporium shares its mission by providing a venue for the perform-ing arts in the county. In its first year, the Emporium has presented four plays and hosted several concerts. It has also hosted lectures and demonstrations, Summer Art Workshops for kids, and a Shake-speare Workshop with 19 young people participating. The Emporium stage is currently located next to the Art Gallery, but is expanding this year into a new, larger venue! The group has purchased the old Western Auto building on W. Bluff in Woodville and are in the process of converting it into a 200 seat theatre with three times the stage area of the current faclity. The existing location can only seat 90, and has been filled for the last four plays presented there. In 2012, the Emporium has plans to move into the new build-ing, and expand on its offerings of last year. They are committed to bringing quality performing arts entertainment to Tyler County. The Emporium has numberous events planned this year, from mu-sic to theatre and beyond.Check with the Art Gallery and Empo-rium for other musical events and educational opportunities during the year. Both the Tyler County Art League and Emporium For The Arts are committed to enhancing the availability of Fine and Perform-ing arts in Tyler County. They both offer numerous opportunties not only to be a viewer of the arts, but also to participate through performance and education.

Most Tyler County folks know the Cooper-Reid house in Woodville as the big house on West Bluff St. that’s just always been there. In fact, for anyone

born in the last 160 years, it re-ally has. Originally built around 1850, the house’s appearance today reflects changes in style forged by time and the tastes of the five families that have owned it. Paul Pendleton, the current owner, bought the place in 2001 and insists he considers himself only the caretaker of the historic home until he passes it on to its next owner.

The 6,500 sq. ft. home sits on approximately six acres of land, has 15 rooms, four bed-rooms, five bathrooms and three fireplaces. It has Pecan floors throughout and is positioned on six acres of land. A simple read-ing of the floor plan, though, does not convey the real charm of the East Texas Antebellum Mansion. Pendleton has filled the home with antique furniture, collected over decades, many of the pieces contemporary with the period in which the home was originally built. It contains numerous collections, including many clocks and 19th century

fine art paintings that the owner has acquired over the years.

The original house was built as a simple log home, the former residence of State Senator and

U.S. House of Representative Samuel Bronson Cooper. But as opportunity, and the vari-ous owner’s fortunes changed through the years, so did the house. Cooper lived there dur-ing the last part of the 19th Century. The property was later sold to S.H. Reid, a local busi-nessman. The Reid family lived in the home until the early 1980’s.

“ T h e house was or iginal ly built as just a minimal kind of a s t r u c t u r e and just evolved as the grand old houses of the time often did,” Pendleton explained, sitting in the house’s library where well known East Texas historical figure John Henry

Kirby once worked as law clerk for the home’s original owner. “If you had good crops that year, or your family enlarged, or if by luck both happened at the same time, you would build on a new room, and the house would grow.” Many changes and reno-vations were done over the years, and Pendleton feels his owner-ship of the home is just part of that continuum. “The Reid fam-ily purchased the home from Samuel Cooper in 1902 and I

finished my restoration of the home in 2002,” he said. “The house has had a lot of loving care over the years by all of the owners.” The floor plan has changed very little since the 1950’s and Pendleton has done no significant restructuring to the home, only restoration. He has restored one of the large columns on the front of the house, and added ce-dar shakes to the roof, consistent with an early photo of the home. The only significant remod-eling he has done inside

the home is the kitchen where he has updated to modern ap-pliances and furnishings. The house’s structure is extremely sound, too. There are huge hand hewn beams under the oldest part of the house, and the sec-ond floor has been reinforced over the years.

One of the landscaping fea-tures that required major reno-vation is the large grape arbor

on the property.“The old grapes on the ar-

bor back there are some of the

oldest grape vines I have every seen,” Pendleton said. “When I came to the property that arbor was very nearly falling down, so we had Otis Fortenberry mill us some local cypress and we re-built that thing of locally grown cypress and stone columns.” He explained that replacing the ar-bor was a difficult job. “In order not to destroy the vines, all of the cypress beams across the top, which weigh 600 lbs each, were hand placed, lift-ing up the existing vines, and placing the beams under them, but one look at them shows they deserve some respect.” The grapes growing on the arbor are scuppernog grapes, a white ver-sion of the Muscadine grape that grows all over Tyler County.

Pendleton has owned and restored several other historic homes, but he speaks of the Cooper-Reid home with obvi-ous love. “The time I’ve owned the home has been a very mem-orable part of my life,” he ex-plained. But he is ready to move on to another goal in his life, to travel extensively. He has placed the home and furnishings on the market with hopes that someone who will care for the house as he has will take over and oversee it for many more years.

“A new chapter in the home’s history is to be written soon,” he said. “And some way or other a new caretaker will move in and add his own indelible mark to the house.”

The Cooper-Reid Home is filled with antique furnishing the own-er has spent years collecting. Many are from the period of the home.

The main foyer (upper left, this page) features a sea grass rug over Pecan flooring (you will find Pecan flooring throughout the home). There is also a Herschede wall clock from around 1850).

The centerpiece of the front par-lor (left) are two matching verde marble cocktail tables. The marble clad woodburning fireplace, nu-merous oil paintings and col-lectibles contribute to the room’s beauty.

Page 9: Routine Special Section

The centerpiece of the upstairs music room (above) is the 1908 Winklemann grand piano.

The study in the rear of the home (left) features warm and com-fortable furnishings, another of the homes three fireplaces, mak-ing it a perfect place to spend a cool winter evening.

An elaborately carved mahogany dining suite sets the tone for the formal dining room (below) on the first floor.

Toronto Blue Jays major league baseball pitcher, Chad Beck, was born and raised in W o o d v i l l e , Texas. “I still share the same house I grew up in with my brother, To-ronto Blue Jays minor league pitcher Casey Beck. “I owe my success partly to my brother, who has always been a better baseball player than me,” said Beck. “One day, my brother heard about MLB Bureau

tryouts going on in Beaumont and he needed a ride because he did not drive yet,” said Beck. “My pitching was clocked that day and I started getting calls to play baseball. Beck’s baseball coach during his senior year of high school, Neil Hennigan, remembers telling Beck about his potential for professional baseball. “I knew that although Chad was my number two pitcher at the time, he had a ‘high ceiling’, meaning with his 6’4” frame and pitching ability, he had the potential to grow into the prototype MLB player and the rest would be up to him,” said Hennigan. “Of course he did grow up to 245 lbs., increased his pitching speed and also matured mentally. He has made it.” “In high school, I was following in my father’s footsteps,” said

B e c k . “ H e w a s an All Ameri-c a n football p l a y e r a n d I got

several offers my senior year to play football on a four-year scholarship. I signed with University of Louisiana in La-fayette to play football. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed play-ing baseball to pass the time, but I was driven to play foot-ball.” Beck’s mother, Tammy, who passed away while he was in college, was a big baseball fan and pushed her boys in that di-rection. With his mother’s en-couragement and Coach Hen-nigan’s advice, Beck went on to accept a baseball scholarship from Panola Junior College and then the University of Louisi-ana at Lafayette.

After five years in the minors, Beck was called up to the major leagues in September of 2011, and will begin his first train-ing camp as a MLB player in February. During his down time, Beck continues training at Woodville High School and Angelina College in Lufkin. “Professional baseball is just like any other craft,” said Beck. “You have to continue practic-ing regularly to maintain your skill level and improve. I went into college pitching 85-92 mph and today I am pitching 95-98 mph.” Beck talked about the sacrifices made following the

dream of professional baseball. “I spent a lot of time on buses, eating cheese nips and drinking water with very little pay and a lot of time away from home and loved ones,” said Beck. “I have matured over the last sev-eral years, so even though I am playing MLB and traveling first class with my choice of lobsters tails and Corona, I keep it all in perspective. I know this is a job and a lot of other people want my job. Some younger players do not get this, and I have seen over 200 excellent players dis-missed over the past five years.”

Alot has been said about his abilities as a pitcher…even from baseball great and Chad Beck fan, Pete Rose. “I watched Beck play a lot while in Las Ve-gas and he is a stand out,” said Rose. Blue Jays General Man-ager Alex Anthropoulos went on to say Beck started for them in New Hampshire and even Vegas. “We think he’s got some ceiling and some upside as a re-liever, he’s got a very good arm, throws very hard,” said Anthro-poulos.

In August 2011, after Beck was brought up to triple A and just before he was called up to the majors, www.sportsnet.ca had this to say about Beck. “One arm that has fast-tracked through three levels this year, although mostly as a starter, has been right-hander Chad Beck, who checks in at 6’4”, 245 lbs. I had not heard of him until recently when his name was brought up to Buck Martinez by none other than Dave Stieb, who was taking in the pre-

game by the Blue Jays dugout in Oakland. Stieb, who has been in uniform from time-to-time in Las Vegas, was impressed by Beck, where he has been used as a starter in Las Vegas. He cer-tainly has the size for the role.”

Beck’s eight-year journey to get to where he is today, took him all over the United States. He was first drafted by the Ari-zona Diamondbacks and spent the next three years in Yakyma, Washington; South Bend, In-diana; and Visalia, California. At the end of his 2008 season, Beck was traded to the Toron-to Blue Jays, which led him to Lansing, Michigan and then to Dunedin, Florida. In one sea-son, he moved up to AA for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, then to AAA for the Las Vegas 51’s and finally to the major league Blue Jays team.

Other inter-esting infor-mation about Beck’s journey to the majors: He was ac-quired by the Toronto Blue Jays from the Arizona Dia-m o n d b a c k s on August 31, 2008 for in-fielder David Eckstein (who is a world se-ries mvp). Then, Beck

was selected by the Diamond-backs in the 14th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft. He was selected by the Blue Jays in the 43rd round (1,285th overall) of the 2004 Draft but did not sign.

Beck will be getting married in the fall of 2012 to his long-time girlfriend, a teacher in Houston. The couple will re-side in Texas. “We have looked at houses in Houston, but I love Woodville,” said Beck. “I told my fiancé we could get a lot more house for a lot less money if we live in my hometown…we will have to see what happens.” Maybe Woodville will have to get some recruiters of its own to entice the Beck family into set-tling in Woodville.

Ervin and Ruby Daniels raised their family in small town USA, not realizing their second child and only son, Irwin, would be des-tined to success far beyond the city limits of Woodville. Daniels graduated with honors from Woodville High School in 1997. Dur-ing the same year, he represented his school as the regional champi-on power lifter and went on to win third in the state. Still dedicated to fitness, Daniels conducted this interview while on the treadmill during his regularly scheduled morning workout routine. Daniels also owns Teagen Rose Fitness and instructs boot camps, training, and designs and prepares nutritional meal plans to meet an indi-viduals fitness goals. Find out more about this by visiting www.teagenrose.com. “When I was 18, my Dad loaned me $2000 to start my own “pay-day lending” business in downtown Woodville,” said Daniels. “It was successful from the beginning and between 1997 and 2003, I became owner of 60 stores across the United States”. Daniels ac-knowledges his entrepreneurial tendencies drove him to business ownership early, leading him to make a conscious choice to skip college. “I have always been interested in credit...business and per-sonal,” said Daniels. “I started another business, FDR Management Group, where I counseled people, especially college students who needed their credit repaired.” Daniels did credit seminars for four years during this time period. “When the credit industry crashed, I started looking at new ideas for a business,” said Daniels. “I was ready to get involved in some type of busi-ness that gives back. My business part-ner, Allen Roland came up with the idea of a popcorn business because he loves to eat the stuff. I do not like popcorn and I could not imagine making money on such a small ticket item. To convince me, Allen made popcorn that tasted like my all time fa-vorite flavor, cook-ies & cream. It was great and immedi-ately I envisioned POParazzi’s Gour-met Popcorn. We began with a basic menu of 35 flavors, and within two months, we were

POParazzi’s Gourmet PopCorn

up to 70 flavors.” Today, POParazzi’s has 200 flavors and Daniels names them all. According to Daniels, some of their most popular flavors were mistakes. For example, Nutty Buddy, Rocky Road and their latest, Spicy Ranch Dorito flavor. “I have always loved the Houston Oilers and now the Texans, so opening our popcorn shop directly across from Reliant Stadium is a bonus for me,” said Dan-iels. “We sell to players and coaches all the time. In 2011, we got an email from the Daytime Emmy Award Show organizers, wanting to put our popcorn in their famous S.W.A.G bags. It was an honor and also a challenge, getting 1700 bags of popcorn, some chocolate flavors, shipped to Las Vegas during 100 degree heat.” Daniels has a unique story about how he met his business partner of eight years. “When I was 16, I was very picky about my hair-cuts (I still am),” said Daniels. “I found an African American bar-ber shop, Kuttin’ Edge, in Sharpstown Mall and started travelling to Houston every weekend from Woodville. At age 19, I had the opportunity to meet the owner, who became my business partner in 2003 when I became part owner in the barbershop. Today, our shop is in the Galleria and we are frequented by a large majority of Houston Texans and Rockets players.” In addition to athletes, many celebrities can be seen in the shop on any given day. “We are known by many celebrities as ‘the’ place to stop when visiting from out of town and before performances or games,” said Daniels. Daniels two sisters, Jackie and Arianne, are also involved in the business. “Jackie has been my righthand partner in most of my businesses since childhood,” said Daniels. “She lurks quietly in the background, but I owe a lot of my success to her…she is definitely my better half.” Currently, POParazzi’s is in closing negotiations to open in the Gal-leria. The gourmet popcorn will be sold at Robert Redford’s Sundance Theater in Houston and also be franchised around the U.S. All Hous-ton Texans Luxury suites are stocked exclusively with POParazzi’s Gourmet Popcorn. Anyone can order POParazzi’s online at www.po-parazzispopcorn.com. It is always made fresh with the finest, all natural ingredients. The store location in Houston is 8236 Kirby Dr. #150.

When Tyler County folks want to cool off during the hot East Texas summers, they don’t have to go far. Lake Tejas in Colmesneil has been the favorite swimming hole around here since before most folks can remember! The 100 ft. “Wet Willy” slide is just one attraction at the lake. It’s all about family fun, with camping, recreation, numerous campsites and pavillions, a conscession area and many other things to do. There are also cabins and self-contained units. For more information phone (409) 200-0402 or visit the website at http://www.laketejas.net/

Take a step back into 19th Century Tyler County history with a visit to Heritage Village, and see how folks lived here at the turn of the century. Located on Hwy 190 West in Woodville, Heritage Village Museum transports the visitor back in time to when the General Store and Church were the center of community life. Owned by the Tyler County Heritage Society since 1987, the Village hosts thousands of visitors each year from around the world to see blacksmithing, quilting, archeological and Indian col-lections housed there. Heritage Village also houses the Whitmeyer Genealogical Li-brary, a valuable resource for those researching their family’s past. Located off the gift shop, the library has grown to be a major East Texas research facility. Another addition to the Village in recent years has been the “Buggy Barn.” The Village acquired a large collection of restored buggy’s from another museum and built a huge building to house them. There are examples of many different types of buggies from

the turn of the 19th Century. Currently under construction, a new “Fiber Arts” building will be completed soon that will allow a greatly expanded area for the exhibition and demonstration of this fascinating art. Spinning, weaving, quilt making and many other disciplines already go on at the Village, and the larger facility will provide space for more

classes and demonstrations. Heritage Village is also the location of numerous Tyler County Events throughout the year and a great place to bring the whole family. Heritage Village Museum and The Pick-ett House Restaurant are located on Hwy. 190 West of Woodville. Phone (409) 283-2272 for more information.

“It’s Dogwood Time In Tyler County.” Every year, Tyler County folks have celebrated Spring for over 60 years with the Annual Tyler Coun-ty Dogwood Festival. This year will be the 69th time Tyler County has

hosted the event. The festival, which celebrates the Dogwood Trees that can be found throughout the county, spans three weekends from mid March through early April and is enjoyed each year by thousands of visitors from all over Texas and the U.S.

The Dogwood Festival was found-ed back in the 1940’s by lifelong

Tyler County resident James Edward Wheat and has been held continu-ally since then except during World War II. This year’s event will kick off with the Festival of the Arts at Heritage Village Museum on March 20 & 21, followed by Western Weekend March 26 & 27, and the Queen’s Weekend on April 3. Plan to attend each weekend. There are always new things to see and do. Heritage Village Museum, and downtown Woodville, is the place to start your day during the Festival of the Arts weekend. The Village, located on Hwy 190 on the Western edge of Woodville is a living reproduction of a 19th century village in Tyler County and features 19th Century buildings with displays depicting life in the county at the end of the 19th century. A main attraction at the Village is the large showing of handmade quilts on display. You will also find blacksmithing demonstrations, the “Spinners and Weavers,” music of every kind and food vendors for the hungry! You can also visit Tyler County Art District during the Festival and watch artists in a variety of mediums at work. Be sure to take a tour of the Tyler County Art League’s gallery while you are in town. Western Weekend always brings lots of folks to Woodville for a weekend of fun that includes a parade featuring one of the largest trail rides in the state. The riders converge on Woodville on Saturday. The Main Event during Western Weekend, though, is two nights of

Tyler County Dogwood Festival

A Celebration Of Spring

Lion’s Rodeo action. Last year’s Rodeo brought out record numbers to watch some fast-paced action in the arena. The Lion’s Club, who sponsor the rodeo, promise this year will be even bigger and better. The Western Weekend Rodeo Queen is crowned during the Saturday night rodeo event.

The weekend also features vendors of every kind, from arts & crafts to all kinds of food. They are located on and around courthouse square in down-town Woodville. Bring the family and plan to spend the entire day enjoying the festivities.Queen’s Weekend is the showcase of the three week festival. Saturday offers a full day of fun. You can spend all day shopping in the arts & crafts of every kind, enjoying the Classic Car show, and joining hundreds of folks who line W Bluff in Woodville to watch the annual Queen’s Weekend Parade.

Then you will want to head out to the amphitheater for the Queen’s Pa-gent and Coronation, featuring the oldest outdoor drama in the south. The event is held in a 2,500 seat outdoor venue. The 2012 Tyler County Dog-wood Festival Queen will be crowned at this event, followed by a play and ending with a spectacular fireworks display.

Thanks to the hard work all year long by many volunteers, the Tyler County Dogwood Festival is a “don’t miss” opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of Tyler County.

Kelsey Langham (upper left) was named Dogwood Festival Queen during the 2011 event. The Pageant is the crowning event during the three day event. Other photos show participants from Festival of the Arts and Western Weekend rodeo.

W.T. Colmesneil Library & MuseumThe House A Train Conductor built

Jerri Smart hated seeing all the businesses and buildings

that she had grown up with in Colmesneil disappearing one

by one. Colmesneil had once been the largest

town in Tyler County, but its history was going away. So in 2002, she convinced her friend Billy Gregory, who had already secured the old Colmesneil train de-pot and had been collecting railroad memorabilia for some time, to go in with her to buy the the oldest house still standing, the decaying home of W. T. Colmesneil, the conductor on the first railroad train that came through the area and the person for whom the town was named. The house was a mess, but four years, and a lot of work (and help from volunteers) later, the home was ready for the grand opening. It is filled with beautiful antiques and small treasures. The Colmesneil House is at 601 South Pitzer Street. Take Highway 256 east from Highway 69, turn south on Pitzer and look for the sign on the right. Phone 409-837-9946 for informa-tion and hours.

Allan Shivers Library & MuseumPreserving The History Of A Texas Governor

Allan Shivers Library & Museum cer-tainly offers a look back on its past through its collection of memorabilia from former Texas Governor Allan Shivers. More than that, though, it looks forward in its com-mitment to serve the Tyler County com-munity through the library. Governor Shivers (1907 - 1985) might have been born in Lufkin, but he grew up in Woodville, so Tyler County folks con-sider him a “native son.” The building housing the museum was built in Woodville by Robert A. Cruise in 1881 and moved in 1963 to make way for a hotel. The Shiver’s secured the building and moved it to its current location, where they restored it and converted it into the mu-seum. At the same time they built a com-pletely equipped library. Allan Shivers Library & Museum is lo-cated at 302 N. Charlton Street in Wood-ville. For more information phone (409) 283-3709.

Two very successful non-prof-it organizations make up the hub of Woodville’s “Art Dis-trict”. e oldest organization

is the Tyler County Art League which was established in 2002. Its Art Gallery is located at 210 W. Blu in Woodville, Texas.

Works of art by TCAL mem-bers is on view and available for purchase. All the traditional mediums are represented, in-cluding oils, watercolors, acryl-ics, pastels, photography, pen and ink and charcoal drawings. Other mediums on view include collage, wood sculpture and ce-ramics and stained glass jewel-ry. Hours are 10 AM to 5 PM Tuesday thru Friday and 10 AM - 3 PM Saturday. e Emporium for the Arts, inc. focuses on the performing arts and is located next door to the Art Gallery. For the past 4 years the Emporium Stage at 212 W. Blu has showcased live

theater productions and musical concerts. With the purchase of the old Western Auto building at 216 W. Blu , plans for expan-sion of a larger theater facility are underway. e new facility will have exible seating with a seating capacity of 250. is expansion will accommodate larger live theater productions, dinner theater and concerts along with space for music and visual art classes. It is the vision of EFA and TCAL to provide the community and visitors the capabilities to experience all av-enues of the creative arts. Stroll down to the Art District and drop in to watch the action.
