Ignition The National Rally at Methven was another great event to be part of; the comradery, the cars and the enthusiasm, it was just great. There was a great collection of cars driven in from all over the country. On display day it was an impressive sight at the Methven show grounds, never have I seen so many Landrovers in all their various guises in any one place before. For Roverites it was a great day celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Rover Car Companies most successful model, the Landrover. The Rover Jet engine on display was a crowd puller. It was fired up at various times during the day drawing in people from all directions as it slowly but powerfully wound up to a high-pitched scream. There was a lot of technical ‘paddock’ talk when it was quiet enough to hear one another about practicalities of an engine like that in your everyday car – slow to get up to speed but once there braking in time to bring the beast to a halt at the next set of traffic lights. The previous day we were treated to an impressive display from the Landrover club as they took to the waters of Lake Hood in a Series 1 Landrover. It was wrapped up in a tarpaulin, loaded up with four passengers some paddles and a small outboard motor and away it went, not too fast, steady and slow to keep it on an even keel. This as you would expect attracted a large number of onlookers. Jane took the long way home from Methven we continued over to the West Coast drove to Invercargill, spent a few days over at Stewart Island then home – no inci-dents and we had nice leisurely drive. However, would you believe it? The Car Show Gods were obviously looking out for us, the National Jaguar Rally was in full swing and parked up either side of the main walkway in the lovely Queens Park Gar-dens were 250+ Jags. Without going overboard or be disrespectful to my own dear Rover marque…… this was amazing - all my favourites were there, by the dozen, that’s all I will say about that! Being privileged to be at both events (the latter purely by chance) it’s important that we do everything we can to support future rallies, events and the Clubs that host them. It’s a buzz for us members serving our own passions but it’s also (often not recognised) part of our history and heritage and there’s more to real life than the distractions of a cell phone. Safe Motoring - Alan Also Memorial Run - Sunday May 27th Meet at John Wilson Drive for a drive down the Otago Peninsula. This will include a visit and tour of the University Marine studies Centre at Portobello but there is a $15/person charge for this and it would be useful to get an idea of numbers before-hand.Final details start times etc will be made available at our next meeting and will appear in the May newsletter.

Apologies: Jan Smith, Bill & Gaynor Falconer, Bernie & Steph Halford, Kevin & Jenny Phillips

Minutes of the previous meeting held on the 6th of March 2018 as detailed in the newsletter circulated. There should have been an apology from Jan Smith. With this amendment it was moved by Ray, seconded by Joe, that the minutes are a true and correct record. Carried Matters Arising: Club promotion. Ray suggested we get some hi-vis vests with our club logo on the back and front to wear when helping out at Best of British rally, ARCC rally, Auto-Spectacular etc. This would help raise our profile and promote our club to potential new members. After discussion it was decided that Ray will get prices for 4 – 6 vests in 2 sizes and report back to the next meeting. Club business cards were again discussed. It was decided Rebecca will get a price to have some printed and report back at the next meeting. Classic Car magazine club profile was discussed. Alan has given Rebecca a copy of his club report for the recent ARCC AGM. Rebecca will use Alan’s report to write a draft profile and supply it to the next meeting. We need to decide what photos to send in with the profile. Correspondence: Email from Rover Club Auckland re oil pressure transmitter wanted for Rover V8. Phone call from club member John Reynolds to say if we have any spare P6 workshop manuals, he is keen to buy one. Newsletters received from Canterbury, Rover Car Club of Australia. Email from someone selling 1962 P4 100 engine. Email regarding a 1999 Rover 75 2.5 V6 for sale for spares or repair. $350, car is in Mosgiel. Next year it will be held on the second Sunday in March. Email regarding a Rover 2000 TC workshop manual available for the price of postage from Timaru. Email from someone wanting a tail light assembly for a 1996 Rover 200 con-vertible. Email from David Raven regarding the winding up of the Manawatu Rover Club due to dwindling membership, aging members, no new members on the horizon. Letter from IRD reminding us to file a tax return. We haven’t had to file a tax return in the past. Ray will contact IRD to confirm whether we need to file a tax return this year. Finance: March bank statement was tabled. Recent and future expenses were dis-cussed. Ray suggested we transfer $500 from our savings account to our cheque account to cover expenses until subs are received after the AGM. Moved, Diana, seconded, Ross. Carried

The Treasurers report be received. Moved, Alan, seconded, Norman. Carried. General Business

Ray - Perhaps the winding up of the Manawatu Rover Club should be a wake-up call to our club. Our membership numbers have dropped over the last 5 years from 54 to 35. We also have an aging membership and we have not been attracting many new members. It was suggested that we advertise in the Star newspaper and investigate having a presence on Facebook to help pro-mote our club to a wider audience. Ray will look into a Facebook page and report back to the next meeting.

Up-coming events were discussed. All British day at Highlands Motorsport Park, Cromwell on 20th of May and our club Memorial Run on May 27th. Alan reported on the 2018 ARCC AGM. Minutes of the meeting will be pub-lished in our newsletter

Meeting closed at 8.52 p.m. Next meeting Tuesday the 1st of May 2018.

The 2018 ARCC National Rally is now behind us and I believe our cele-bration of the 70 years of Land Rover was a success and enjoyed by all. We were blessed by good weather and that made a real differ-ence for the Sunday's celebration. It also helped those floating the Land Rover that they didn't have to contend with 30 knot swirls. The local Methvencare Community Trust benefitted from just on $2000.00 from the gate takings at Sunday's Land Rover Celebration and I pass like to thank Paul and his local spit roast catering for this. The Methven Community Centre was a perfect and superior venue, and all the accommodation providers should be thanked for keeping us largely together in this pleasant town.

Electric Cars Major Source of CO2 Emissions By Roy Hughes, National Secretary NZFOMC

Trailing tonnes of CO2 emissions 120 weather scientists from 59 countries flew into Christchurch in March to add more hot air to the never ending discussions of the alleged causes and cures of the curse of climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Working Group on Land was enthusiastically welcomed by our Climate Change Minister, the Hon James Shaw who promised New Zealand will achieve net zero emissions before 2050 by upgrading to 100 per cent renewable power generation and increasing the uptake of electric cars. But the expectations that electric cars will solve the climate change problem are not supported by recent research or experience. Even just the manufacture of batteries for electric cars is not environ-mentally friendly. The Swedish Environmental Research Institute, IVL Svenska investigated the global warming impact of lithium-ion batteries and found that for each kilowatt-hour of storage capacity emissions of 150 to 200 kilograms of carbon dioxide are generated during the manufacturing process. The Nissan Leaf has a 30 kWh battery and the Tesla Model S 100 kWh of power storage. So when you buy one or the other, CO2 emissions of approximately 5.3 tonnes for the Leaf and 17.5 tonnes for the Tesla, have already been released before they are driven even one kilometre. An IVL researcher compared the CO2 emissions of average petrol or diesel cars and found one could be driven for 2.7 years before it matched the carbon dioxide emissions released in manufacturing a battery for a Nissan Leaf and 8.2 years for a Tesla size battery. Recent reports here in the New Zealand Listener suggest Leaf owners may be very lucky indeed if their batteries were still functional in 2.7 years as a number have been experiencing diminishing recharge capacity and a loss of range.

Page 13: Rover Car Club Of Otago Tribune · There was a great collection of cars driven in from all over the country. On display day it was an impressive sight at the Methven show grounds,

So by any measure a classic car owner still using a Morris Minor, or even an old Rover, for daily commuting in effect makes a much greater contribution to reducing CO2 emissions than any current or potential electric vehicle driver. And research by the Australian Auto-mobile Association has found that the “real world’ performance of Prius hybrids does not match the promised results. The petrol con-sumption of the plug-in hybrid vehicle was 166 per cent higher than the official figures with a full state of charge and 337 per cent higher when tested from a low state of charge. The Prius was just one of around thirty passenger and light commercial vehicles which failed to match their official test results when subjected to on road “real world’ measurement of their emissions and fuel consumption. The AAA has been concerned about the growing discrepancy between the real world fuel consumption figures and performance in laboratory tests to meet CO2 regulations. On average they found the vehicles used 24 pr cent more fuel than was established in laboratory tests. Most came nowhere meeting the EU standards with which they are claimed to be compliant, and the worst emitted four times more carbon dioxide and seven times more nitrogen oxide. The Australian tests also established that any keen environmentalists determined to reduce their carbon footprints would be better ad-vised to drive a Lamborghini or a Hummer than a Tesla. That is be-cause in Australia and elsewhere around the world, 68 per cent of the 2 million electric cars on the road are still dependent on coal power to charge their batteries. So with even our Climate Change Minister apparently misadvised as to the real benefits we can expect from converting to electric Powered cars there is both an opportunity and an obligation im-posed on the FOMC and heritage motoring movement to ensure our precious fossil fuelled vehicles are not fruitlessly sacrificed to fulfill unachievable objectives. And if CO2 emissions really are such a threat perhaps most of those 120 weather scientists should stay home in future and just send one with a report on their findings.
