PRESIDENTS REPORT

I am privileged to present to you the second President's Report of what is the combined entity known as theRoxburgh Park Broadmeadows Cricket Club ("RPBCC").

Before proceeding to talk to our on and off-field achievements, challenges and future strategic direction, I must callout and thank specific individuals both personally and on behalf of the club's membership:

· thank you to my fellow Executive in Anthony Rosta, Steve Ramadge (Vice-Presidents), Pas Sciulli(Secretary) and Geoff Turner (Treasurer).

The diversity of their respective skill sets ensured a rounded Executive in Season 2013/2014.

Anthony was an incredible source of calm and balance as my sounding board often fielding three to fourseparate phone calls a day from myself (12 months of the year) on all things RPBCC related (the cricketSeason does NOT end at an Executive level and, in fact, personally - I find myself more busy with cricketcommitments in the months outside of the Season).

Whilst less visible, in a physical sense, Pas again undertook a mountain of work that ensured the cluboperated with good governance and due process. Pas is uncompromising in his non-negotiable values of clubfirst philosophy and the commitment we have to our immediate members (Senior and Junior) as well as ourcommitments to the game of cricket and Cricket Victoria and the VSDCA as governing and affiliatedbodies. Additionally, Pas' effort (for a 2nd consecutive Season) in hosting our International Cricket Vanuatuimports is an impost that no member of the club can truly comprehend and/or appreciate. Pas was a mostdeserving winner of the Best Clubperson Award.

Steve Ramadge undertook the dedicated and specific roles of Bar and Merchandise Manager. Whilst Steveoften removes himself from broader strategic debate, the sheer commitment of man hours that he volunteersto the club is something to behold whether reconciling bar monies, stocking the bar, serving at the bar or co-ordinating our 22 separate items of merchandise.

For the 7th consecutive Season, Geoff again oversaw all the monies coming in and out of the club (for a clubof our newly combined size, there is a considerable volume of transactions and sources of both Income andExpenditure)

· thank you to the broader General Committee for your efforts in contributing to the go-forward entity that isthe combined RPBCC

· thank you to Bruce Fordham, Luke Maguire and the Hume City Council as a whole for the continuedcommitment to our club through ongoing capital investment but, more so, buy-in to what our longer termstrategic view is with regards to the club and our commitment to the game of cricket and the localcommunity that is Hume. Later in this report, I will talk too pending "in-principle" capital investmentcommitments and proposed redevelopment works

· thank you to the VSDCA and Cricket Victoria for their support of our club as a VSDCA Affiliate, throughCricket Victoria Dividend, as well as ongoing resource commitment to a club that plays such an integral rolein Cricket Victoria and VSDCA planning given our place within one of Victoria's "growth corridors".

Our members would be unawares of the explicit involvement of these bodies in ensuring that our club is bestengaging both the cricket and local communities as a whole in the growth corridor that is Hume. In manyregards, we have a greater responsibility to the game of cricket and the community at large than our ownimmediate interests

· thank you again to the Cricket Vanuatu Board and CEO, Mark Stafford, in particular for the ongoingpartnership with the RPBCC through the ICC Future Stars Scholarship program. This Season, we wereblessed to host both Patrick Matautaava and Trevor Langa through this Scholarship program

· thank you to our club sponsors; the Broadmeadows Sporting Club, Bendigo Bank - Strathmore Branch, Sand J Smash Repairs, Grashan Sports and WindscreenTech. Without the financial support of the

Page 6: Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows Cricket Club Inc.rpcc.vic.cricket.com.au/files/1156/files/14/annual report 2013-2014... · The diversity of their respective skill sets ensured a rounded

aforementioned partners, the financial viability of the club and the affordability of play for our playingmembers (Senior and Junior) would be an entirely different proposition

· thank you to our plethora of volunteers that are too numerous to mention all. However, specifically, clubdarlings Jimmy and Di in addition to Sharyn Ramadge, Lisa Rosta, Lee Elms, Ian Hudson all require specialmention.

Additionally, thank you to our dedicated Team Managers in Gary Manefield and Geoff Brewer who ensurecontrol, structure and professionalism on a weekly basis in our 1st and 2nd XI's and allow our Captains inthose respective teams to concentrate, exclusively, upon the on-field

· thank you to our Social Committee, again lead by Liam Patrick, with significant support this Season mostnotably from Lisa Rosta.

We must also recognise the efforts of Ben Rose and Tim English in co-ordinating the club's major fundraiserof the Season in the Reverse Draw Raffle.

The Social Committee again tried to deliver a diverse social program that would provide something foreveryone.

The highlights of Season 2013/2014 undoubtedly being the Barefoot Bowls Day, the Reverse Draw Raffleand the Season ending gala event that is Presentation Night.

As we enter the new Season, I am conscious that there will be some change at a Social Committee level. It isincumbent upon our members to involve themselves in this capacity to ensure that our functions meet theneeds, brief and interest of all. Additionally, our members must make a more concerted effort to support ourSocial Function activity given, as will be explained later in this report, the correlation between SocialIncome and the covering of the existing "gap" between playing fees compared to playing expenses. Putsimply, if Social Income continues to dwindle, the cost of playing cricket (subs and match day fees) needsincrease to better cover the cost, per player, of fielding Senior and Junior XI's

Moving on from the much deserved recognition and appreciation as above, I now need specifically talk too both theoff-field and on-field for the Season gone as well as the Seasons ahead.

Off-field

Financials;

1) for a second consecutive Season, the club has incurred an operating loss. Whilst not ideal and, in many regards, onthe surface, alarming - background context and understanding is required. In Season 2013/2014, the club continued toinvest in what is essentially a start-up club. Investment in one-off and start-up assets including new Rollers andMowers for the new turf facility at Lakeside Reserve (an investment just shy of $18,000), investment in new clubapparel to ensure a consistency and continuity of brand across the merged playing group were the most significantnon-standard Expenses.

Additionally, the impact on bottom line was also contributed to by a halving of the Cricket Victoria AnnualDistribution.

Combining the non-standard and once off investment in turf maintenance assets and apparel as well as the CricketVictoria Dividend Reduction results in a bottom line impact of approximately $25,000 to $30,000. As such, in manyregards, through prudent fiscal management, the club was able to mitigate and minimise the end Loss position.

That said, as any club member can appreciate, despite significant capital cash holdings at time of merge, an inabilityto stem annual losses will question the club's go-forward viability and sustainability and, as such, we must be mindfulof this moving forward

2) Understanding of "gap" between Playing Fees (Subs and Match Day Fees) and Playing Costs. Over the past 2months, the club has undertaken a considerable book of financial forensics in seeking to understand the "true cost",per player, compared to the "true fees", per player.

Put simply, what is the "gap" between what the club collects via way of player payments versus what it costs to put a

Page 7: Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows Cricket Club Inc.rpcc.vic.cricket.com.au/files/1156/files/14/annual report 2013-2014... · The diversity of their respective skill sets ensured a rounded

player on the park (including but not limited to; ground rental, insurance, utilities, Umpires, balls, training, equipment, maintenance, Association expenses, etc).

The outworking’s of these investigations were alarming to say the least. The average "true cost", per player, isapproximately $1,100 per Season. The average "true fees" collected, per player, is $500. The current gap betweenCosts and Fees is just under $600. Essentially, for every Senior player of the Falcons, it is costing the club $600 toput you on the park. This is unsustainable moving forward. You will note that earlier in my report I called outongoing Social Function support. In many regards, this identified "gap" of $600 is somewhat covered by SocialActivity; players supporting functions, fundraising activity, the bar, Thursday night, meals, etc. However, unfortunately, there is a changing face of local sporting clubs and most players these days want to train and play and,as such, this "gap" is not addressed through Social Activity support. As such, there are two methods of address; 1)increase the costs to play (subs and match day fees), and/or 2) ensure greater Social Activity support. Playersassuming that merely paying their Annual Subs and weekly Match Payments ensures that they meet their personalcosts at a club level are mistaken. The club will continue to explore, in coming months, options that we have toaddress this "gap" moving forward

Cultural Growth and evolution of OUR club

1) It is testament to our members; Senior, Junior, playing and non-playing as to all that our club has been able toachieve in its infancy following merge. There are many things, off and on-field that we have not got correct. However, on the whole, the achievements, developments and progression of the club in such a short period of timeare profound and, resultant, the collective good outweighs the bad. That said, we need ensure that we are movingforward, both on and off-field. In many regards, what could be classed as the "honeymoon" period of the combinedentity is over and the faux goodwill that accompanies this has been diluted. This is NOT a bad thing as it allows us tounderstand as to where we are truly at, the challenges we have before us and how best address.

Key topics of consideration for our members as we look to maintain our mantle as the most progressive and dynamicclub in North/West Victoria:

§ address of financial considerations as above

§ working towards a balance of elite level cricket, all-ages and abilities participation and social. This mustbe better balanced by our on and off-field leaders/influencers as well as our club members.

Primarily, we are a cricket club where cricket, success at cricket, development of players - Senior andJunior, is paramount and above all else. Social is secondary. That said, we must also understand andappreciate that, without social integration, there are significant impacts upon the financial stability ofthe club as well as its cultural core.

We are never going to deliver a platform/vehicle that meets the needs of all and, as such, the keyconsideration with this regard is that we must work together towards a collective end outcome asopposed to pulling in different directions

§ I have spoken, at length, as to the need to move past what were two former entities with unique profiles, cultures, systems and processes in what was formerly the Broadmeadows or Roxburgh Park CricketClub. These individual clubs are NO LONGER. We are now the combined entity that is the RoxburghPark Broadmeadows Cricket Club.

Too often in Season past I witnessed examples/challenges associated with members refusing to moveforward to what we now have and, rather, stay tied with what once was. To be brutally honest, attitudessuch as this only hamstring the club, your fellow members, your club mates, your team mates andyourself.

Change Management is a specialist skill set and most people are reluctant to embrace change. However, that said, two years after merge it is time to either embrace the new and move forward to the picturesquehorizons that lay ahead or, alternatively, move on to an alternate vehicle that offers you what youmiss/crave. Unfortunately, it is that simple. That said, I have every confidence that our members will beable to fully embrace and buy-in to what is the new and move forward as a collective unit

Page 8: Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows Cricket Club Inc.rpcc.vic.cricket.com.au/files/1156/files/14/annual report 2013-2014... · The diversity of their respective skill sets ensured a rounded

Redevelopment

1) as our club members have been advised, the Hume City Council has provided the club with an "in-principle"commitment of $1m to be invested in new Social Rooms with work to commence at Calendar Year end 2015. Thiscommitment of $1m towards new social rooms follows previous investment of $180,000 in Lakeside Drive (Top) turfconversion and $250,000 investment in carparking, pathways, surrounds. Financial investment already spent and/orcommitted within Council budget of $1.5m is SIGNIFICANT. Anyone who has acquaintances at other local clubscan ask their friends/acquaintances as to challenges other clubs have in securing amounts of $10,000 for improvednets or new centre wicket synthetic. As such, the investment (both incurred and committed) is material dollar costrepresentation of the unwavering support the new combined has from the Hume City Council

2) at the time of preparing this report, there is a current Council proposal with regards to potential immediateredevelopment of Lakeside Reserve and further investment in the club's immediate and longer term development.Given the confidentiality of these present proposals, I am unable to elaborate at this juncture, however - it is hoped atthe time of the AGM that I will be able to talk through this capital investment, timing, considerations, etc at length

On-field

1) Coaching; thankyou and recognition, on behalf of all playing members, needs be extended to our Coach's inSeason 2013/2014 in Mitch Johnstone and Tim Branagan.

As all members are now aware, Tim will be relinquishing the Coaching reigns entering the new Season andconcentrating exclusively upon his on-field contribution as the incumbent 1st XI Club Champion. Whilst, personally,Tim did not have the on-field Season of success that he would have liked - his commitment to the role of SeniorCoach never waivered (despite considerably trying times at a personal level) and this is testament to his character andsense of self.

Mitch Johnstone made an immediate impact, as expected, on the club in Season 2013/2014. Already recognised asthe premier elite Junior Coach in North/West Victoria, Mitch oversaw our Senior Squad and delivered a level ofprofessionalism, preparation and commitment the envy of 27 other VSDCA clubs.

Whilst Tim will be concentrating upon his playing pursuits, exclusively, in Season 2014/2015, I am delighted thatMitch will be covering this loss in overseeing and co-ordinating ALL that is on-field

2) a sincere thankyou and call out of recognition to our Junior Coach's and Team Managers. Our Junior program isthe lifeblood of the club moving forward and those who dedicate themselves, tirelessly, to the development of ouryoung player talent warrant all the thanks. Additionally, I would specifically like to recognise Lee Elms who assumedthe role of Junior Co-ordinator which resulted in immediate and marked improvements in communication andprocess

3) Our on-field leaders in Mitch Johnstone (1st XI), Tim English (3rd XI), Anthony Rosta (4th XI) and AdrianD'Cruz (5th XI) need be formally recognised. Leading teams, particularly at lower XI levels, is a thankless and timeconsuming task where the Captain often finds himself as a taxi service, team manager, financial broker, counsellor, etc.

Our Captains often go without recognition and acknowledgement and this is wrong. As such, I thank each of Tim(who confronted many challenges and obstacles in the Season past, often foregoing his own game), Anthony (whotook a team that perennially finishes near the bottom of the table to a game out of finals) and Adrian (who throughcunning manipulation and an unparalleled commitment to the cause and belief in the success possible) was able toachieve the Premiership that he so passionately craved. However, above all else, kudos to Mitch Johnstone who so,very nearly, returned our 1st XI to the VSDCA Finals (where a Round 13 loss to Yarraville only saw us "drop out").This was a remarkable turnaround from a team who, the season earlier, had bordered on non-competitive at times. The most telling attribute of any leader is the material demonstration as to what he can achieve from his playingresources and, with this regard, the amazing contribution of Mitchell Streiff has to, somewhat, be credited to Mitch'sleadership

4) Hatch; so close, yet so far. A heartbreaking Semi Final loss to eventual Premiers, Oakleigh, broke the hopes anddreams of Mitch and Mick Streiff, Lee Elms and Kurt Brandt and Daniel Patrick. So laconic by nature, the passionand conviction that Mitch has towards his Hatch boys is something to behold. I have rarely seen him as personallydisappointed as he was following that last over Semi Final defeat to Oakleigh.

Page 9: Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows Cricket Club Inc.rpcc.vic.cricket.com.au/files/1156/files/14/annual report 2013-2014... · The diversity of their respective skill sets ensured a rounded

As good a Coach as Mitch is, the RPBCC Hatch program and success of this program would not have been possiblewithout the efforts and contributions of Mick Streiff, Kurt Brandt and Daniel Patrick but, most of all, "mother hen"Lee Elms who commences her pre-planning 6 months out from Hatch start. On behalf of all club members, you madeus so very proud this year

5) Curation; thankyou to Ian Hudson and his "2nd in command" support, Jimmy Earp. The commitment to preparingthe best wickets possible at both Lakeside and Progress Reserves demonstrated, as with previous years, a purecommitment to pride in your personal work. Both Ian and Jimmy are respective ornaments to our club and bestrepresent the cultural integration in acknowledging what was past but, more so, embracing what is new

6) Recruiting; by now all members would be aware of the tremendous success that club Captain/Coach has had insecuring commitment from new player talent for Season 2014/2015. I am also conscious as to the confusion andambiguity that notice of these new playing members may have caused and, as such, I wish to address (briefly) asPresident.

To secure 14+ new players, led by Adam Yates and Maddy Bisht, is an incredible achievement by Mitch andtestament to his personal brand and reputation within the cricket community.

Many players making a commitment to move to the Falcons are not coming across to play 1st or 2nd XI but, rather,to best develop and fast track their cricket on turf, within the VSDCA and through our elite panel of Coach's. Theyhave come for opportunity and because our club offers a vehicle that offers the best opportunity for development andgrowth.

The recognition of the club and Mitch, personally, to drive the commitment of 14+ new players is something weshould derive a sense of pride from. Any existing club member concerned as to their place entering Season2014/2015 should note two points; 1) whilst Mitch has complete autonomy over player development and growth, both Mitch and the club will ensure that all players (new and old) are on an even keel basis of consideration. Thosewho commit to pre-season, ensure that they are financial, demonstrate the right behaviours, etc will be providedpreference over those who don't (irrespective of whether a new, existing, young or old player). Whilst it shouldn'thave been necessary, I felt it appropriate to clarify any ambiguity and confusion with this regard, and 2) in the twoseasons following merge, the club has struggled on-field. This is and has been unacceptable. In many regards, upwards of 20 to 30 players on a weekly basis have been playing a grade above where they are best suited via way ofcontribution and their own development. The club finishing 5th last (of 28 clubs) within the VSDCA ClubChampionship is unacceptable. By comparison, the Oakleigh Cricket Club had all 4 VSDCA sides compete in theirrespective Grand Finals and their 1st XI competed in their 13th consecutive finals campaign. This is a club who is abeacon of sustained success and a club for whom we should strive to become, on-field. When assessing your ownSeason contribution, the following "minimum pass mark" benchmarks should be noted; if a specialist batsmen - aminimum of 250 runs, if a specialist bowler - a minimum of 20 wickets, if an all-rounder - a minimum of 150 runsand 15 wickets. If not having hit these benchmarks, it would be fair to conclude that at better performed clubs, youwould not have retained your place

In concluding, Season 2013/2014 was a year in which inroads were made, both on and off-field, challenges wereconfronted and overcome and milestone achievements reached. That said, there is an enormous book of work, on andoff-field, to be undertaken in the coming Season if we wish to ensure that we avoid accepting mediocrity ofperformance and/or culture. ALL members must ask themselves as to whether they buy-in to the new combined and,if so, what tangible contribution they can make to the strategic direction we are heading and/or, if not, what arealternate vehicles better suiting your needs from a cricket club.

As always, yours in cricket

SOCIAL REPORT

Season 2013/2014 saw a season of continued growth of our club, both on and off field. It was fantastic to see theinflux of new players and their appreciation for the social sides of the club, nobody will ever be able to forget someof Jed’s outfits over the course of the season – truly up there with some of the “best” seen in many a year!

As always the social committee works to encompass our wide demographic and seek to create a welcomingenvironment with something for everybody across the course of the season. This is without doubt a difficult taskwhilst still working within a socially and fiscally responsible manner! We commenced the year with a Karaoke nightwith professional hosts finishing with a rousing rendition of the newly minted club theme song; we followed this witha family afternoon hosted by the Broadmeadows Sporting Club’s bowls club. An action packed day of barefootbowls culminated with a “nearest to the pin” challenge where Mick Streiff stepped up and suggested that perhaps hislawn bowl talents may surpass those he showcased on the cricket field! We rounded out 2013 with a Christmas partyin the rooms to simply enjoy each other’s company and celebrate a great calendar year for the Falcons. Post-Christmas we had a fantastic and nail biting Reverse Draw which was well attended and enjoyed by all, this wasfollowed by a Pink Stumps Day Ladies Luncheon in support of the McGrath Foundation and their ongoing worksupporting patients and families battling breast cancer. At the completion of the last round we held a vote countevening which was evenly contested amongst players from all elevens.

Finally we held our season ending presentation night at the Highland Hotel in Craigieburn. An ENOURMOUS thankyou must go to Lisa Rosta who put in 6 months of incredible work and effort in pulling together the evening – fromnegotiating with the venue, to organising menus, centre pieces and the guest list. Lisa did an absolute power of workand without the night could not have gone ahead let alone been the great success it was. Thankyou Lisa!

The social committee this year consisted of Lisa Rosta, Tamara Lingard, Tim English and Kurt Brandt. Thank youall for you efforts in planning and building the season – the hours of work before, during and after to make the eventsa success.

Furthermore thankyou to the following people who assisted with the bar, room set up or many other small things thatmade the season social calendar possible and unfortunately often go unnoticed and unrecognised – Lee Elms, SteveRamadge, Sharyn Ramadge, Peter Gaff, Ryan Gaff, Jimmy and Di Earp (who also fed the masses at every possibleopportunity with fantastic meals!), Pas Sciulli, Ben Wood, Ben Rose, Anthony Rosta, Mark Garland, DianneGarland, Janelle Lynch and many others – apologies as I am sure to have missed somebody out as we have so manyfantastic volunteers at our club.

Thank you to all who attended social functions this season, on behalf of the whole social committee we hope youenjoyed yourselves.

Bring on 2014/2015!Liam Patrick – Social Secretary

COACH’S REPORTFalcons,

With the 2nd season of the combined entity coming to a close it is satisfying to see the club moving in the rightdirection. We are already seeing the hard work and commitment from all players and officials to create a strong, competitive and enjoyable environment for players of all ages to prosper in our region. If we continue along thistrend then our club will become the envy of other clubs in the area and success will be a natural part of thatenvironment.

On a personal note, this year represented a massive challenge both on and off the field, and it’s with greatappreciation that I thank all people involved with the club for their support during a personally challenging time. Inparticular I would like to thank Mitch, Ben, my teammates and the committee for providing a supportive environmentduring this time.

On the field the club showed great improvement and enthusiasm this year, with some experienced players showing ushow good they can be, with some new colourful characters coming on board as well. Most satisfying of all, wasseeing a real competitive edge begin to develop within the playing group, which will ensure that in any situation wefind ourselves we will always be competitive.

This year we saw improvement across all 5 teams, assisted by 5 dedicated captains and one of the youngest playinggroups going around. In particular it was great to see our 5th 11 taste ultimate success with a fantastic win at FortressLakeside in front of a capacity crowd. The pleasing part of this win was the mix of experienced players gelling wellwith our talented youth, ensuring that in years to come those 11 guys will have a unique tie to bring them together. The year ahead poses a strong test on whether or not we as a club can continue to maintain the momentum which wefought hard this year to gain. How we begin our campaign will be a good sign as to how the club will succeed thisyear so I am looking forward to seeing strong numbers at preseason to ensure we as a club continue to strive for theultimate glory.

We saw plenty of new names go up on the partnership board this year, highlighting the commitment to being betterand delivering the desired results. It was also pleasing to see so many bowling trophies for a lot of players whocelebrated key milestones.

Two key results that should be highlighted is Mitch Streiff’s great result on the Hatch Medal night. It was a fantasticresult for a talented player and hopefully just a taste of things to come. Special mention also goes to Connor Garlandwho took out the league bowling average in our 5th 11. A great result for a young player at the club and someonewho we hope to see come up through the ranks moving forward.

With Mitch Johnstone now leading the club as head coach and senior 1st 11 captain, he will set a strong example onwhat it takes to be successful, and with the numerous signings we are seeing on social media, success will be comingsooner rather than later.

I would like to thank everyone for the great experience the past 2 years as coach has provided me. Plenty of greatmemories and experience, which I look forward to continuing in an assistant capacity moving forward.

1st ELEVEN REPORTIt is fair to suggest that the 1st XI experienced one enormous rollercoaster of a season. The highs were incrediblyhigh, but the lows unbelievably low. When playing to our full potential we were as good as any team in thecompetition, however conversely when we were off our game we played like a bottom four side. Our bowling attackcomplimented each other exceptionally well, including three bowlers featuring in the top ten wicket-takers at the endof the home and away season. Only once did we concede over 200 runs in an innings, which is testament to thequality of our bowling attack. Conversely, our batting was a major disappointment with only one player averagingover 20.

The season started off with a bang with comprehensive wins against Endeavour Hills and Mt Waverley, before wewent through a horror patch where we beaten comprehensively in four successive games. The losses against Sunshineand Noble Park in particular would come back to haunt us at season’s end and contribute to us missing the finals. Werebounded with an excellent come from behind victory against Melton, while we thrashed Williamstown despitemissing a few key players. We then endured another horror patch, this time being thumped by Oakleigh andBayswater, before responding with two clutch victories against Box Hill and Altona. As we entered the last home andaway game in the top six and with it all to play for, we succumbed to our batting woes yet again by failing to chase amoderate total against Yarraville. We ended up finishing 7th and narrowly missing the finals, a disappointment but anaccurate and fair reflection for a very inconsistent side.

In terms of individuals, it is hard to look past Mitchell Strieff. Already a club stalwart and VSDCA veteran at just 22,Mitchell enjoyed a personal best season. He topped our batting averages and played several fantastic knocks, such ashis match-winning 75 versus Box Hill or his 81 versus Werribee in a losing cause. His bowling was equallyimpressive, including spells of 7/21 against Noble Park and 5/21 versus Box Hill. The interesting thing to note is thatMitch’s best Cricket is ahead of him and it will be fascinating to see whether he can take his game to the next level.

As part of our partnership with Cricket Vanuatu, we were fortunate enough to have Patrick Matautaava and TrevorLanga play for us. Patrick’s season was simply outstanding, being our leading bowler and chipping in with severalmatch-winning cameos. His ever-present smile and quiet, unassuming nature (as well as his outstandingperformances) meant that he really hit it off with his team mates. His fellow countryman Trevor undoubtedlyunderachieved with the bat and would be disappointed with his output, however the primary reason for Trevorcoming to Australia to play Cricket is to learn about himself and his game, and there is little doubting that Trevorwould have gained much from his experiences.

A player who came into the program at the eleventh hour, Jed Kanagasabapathy injected some spunk and characterinto the team, and was often our barometer. His innings of 78 on a poor wicket against Williamstown was one of thebest I have seen. For Jed to take his Cricket to the next level, he will need to bridge the gap between his best andworst, something he is aware of. Much will be expected of him next season as arguably our most talented batsman.

Bryce Preston was certainly a surprise packet in the 1st XI season, and flew under the radar for many oppositionteams by taking some big scalps. Bryce is also an excellent team man and provided a laidback element to anotherwise highly structured team. He is certainly a player who we will look to build around next season.

A player who the club has invested heavily in through basically three full seasons in the 1st XI, Kurt Brandt showedsome positive signs throughout the season and looked in form at all times. As a young batsman, Kurt will take time tomature and develop, however he must continue to improve and hone his game to guarantee his spot. With the strengthof character he possesses and an improving understanding of what it takes to become a better player, it is nowincumbent on Kurt to take the next step.

Two of the more talented players at the club, Bradley Lynch and Daniel Patrick, showed some glimpses of theirpotential at various stages of the season. Bradley would probably be underwhelmed with his output as a specialistbatsman but is now more aware of the standards and expectations placed on 1st XI Cricketers. Daniel receivedminimal opportunities and played an unglamorous role with a minimum of fuss, however will need to continue toimprove to warrant a 1st XI spot next season.

Club coach and 2012/13 Batting average winner Tim Branagan had a disappointing season compared to his exploitsof the previous season, however there were several mitigating circumstances which had a profound impact on hisCricket. Tim’s strength of character and resolve through some tough times were admirable and he is keen to makeamends next season. As our most experienced senior player, we will need Tim to lead from the front next season.

Page 14: Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows Cricket Club Inc.rpcc.vic.cricket.com.au/files/1156/files/14/annual report 2013-2014... · The diversity of their respective skill sets ensured a rounded

Despite playing support roles to a strong bowling attack, Tristan Plunkett and Naythan Lynch performed stronglywhen presented with opportunities. Tristan’s statistics were excellent but commitments external to Cricket preventedhim from playing a full season in the 1st XI, while as a young spinner Naythan will take time to develop his craft, however he certainly showed good some good signs in the second half of the season when presented with moreresponsibility in the 2nd XI.

In the latter stages of the season, Lester Herathge and Tom Manefield came into the team and injected much neededenthusiasm and energy. These two experienced players appeared to enjoy another taste of 1st XI Cricket and will behungry to play the majority of next season in the 1st XI.

Senior batsman Ali Hussain probably performed below expectations, partly due to residency concerns and Cricketbeing a secondary focus, however played some nice innings where his class could not be disputed. Young recruitJacob Hazledine played several games in the 1st XI as a specialist batsman and showed some positives signs at times, however study commitments and flagging motivation afflicted him and this reflected in some of his performances.

To the players, I would like to thank you for your total support of me and commitment to the cause. Not once did anyplayer complain about being demoted down the batting order or dragged from the bowling crease. One thing that wecertainly have going for us is a strong team culture which will hold us in good stead heading into the future.

I would like to thank Gary Manefield for his tireless work as team manager. Gary was totally dedicated to the teamand would do everything to ensure the members of the 1st XI were comfortable and ready to play. On behalf of theplayers, thank you very much for your outstanding efforts. By extension, thank you to our supporters including Mickand Glenda Streiff, Darren Patrick, Ashleigh Sedevcich, Kellie Del Pozo and Kim Branagan (to name a few).

To club coach Tim Branagan, it was an absolute pleasure working alongside you this year and your love and passionfor the club is there for all to see. Despite you having increased work and family commitments, I look forward toworking alongside you again next season as we search for club wide success.

I am also grateful for the support of the executive, and in particular, President Ben Wood. Our almost daily (andlengthy) discussions demonstrated your unabashed passion for the club and we are in good hands under yourleadership. I look forward to working closely again with the executive next year as we chase sustained success.

Moving forward, I implore all players in all grades to seek to better themselves and improve their output. We madesignificant strides in 2013/14 however we have a long way to go. Progress needs to continue to be made with ourcollective skill level, consistency, understanding of the game, fitness standards and accountability. As with everyseason there will be player turnover, however there will be numerous players coming into the club and thecompetition for spots needs to be fierce. There cannot be any complacency amongst the playing group and all spotsare up for grabs. We have laid a solid foundation for years to come, it is now time for the players to deliver.

Mitchell Johnstone1st XI Captain

2nd ELEVEN REPORTA Season that started so promising, with a Round 1 victory versus Endeavour Hills, amounted to a Season of; "whatif's" and failed opportunities. Put simply, our Season win/loss record should have, undoubtably, been better than itwas and we suffered through an inherent lack of confidence or understanding as to how to win games when theopportunities present themselves. With this regard and without discrediting our opposition, we SHOULD havedefeated all of Mount Waverley, Sunshine, Altona and Yarraville given positions held in those respective games.

Whilst there was positives, team and individual, for the Season - it is fair to conclude that Season 2013/2014 was oneof the more disappointing Season's, collectively, for the 2nd XI.

Individuals requiring specific mention (in no particular order):

Geoff Brewer - as Team Manager, Geoff is the heart and soul of the 2nd XI. As I have positioned many a time, ifplayers dedicated themselves to the cause with as much passion and conviction as Geoff, we would win more gameseach season than we lose. Geoff, personally, I thank you for your support over the past 3 Seasons and hope that, incontinuing the role, you experience the team success that you deserve and your efforts warrant

Page 15: Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows Cricket Club Inc.rpcc.vic.cricket.com.au/files/1156/files/14/annual report 2013-2014... · The diversity of their respective skill sets ensured a rounded

Tom Manefield - had a stand out Season. At Christmas, Tom sat comfortably in the top 3 VSDCA 2nd XI run-scorer's. 3 half centuries for the Season, 292 runs at 33 and a 2nd XI Batting Average pay testament to Tom's outputduring the Season. That said, aside from the material numbers, it was the intangible contributions by Tom thatimpressed most; his leading from the front in preparation and commitment as a VC, the manner in which he made hisruns and when he made his runs. Tom thrives on pressure and made "tough" runs throughout the Season. Many ayoung RPBCC batting talent could learn a thing or two from Tom. Tom does not make "pretty" 60's and 70's once aplatform is laid but, rather, Tom makes tough runs in trying conditions and circumstances. Tom also developed as aleader throughout the Season

Nick Brandt - statistically, Nick's Season was nothing to crow about. However, for a kid who at Season start was outof his depth at VSDCA 2nd XI level, Nick matured and flourished come Season's end. The most impressive featureof Nick's Season was his unwavering commitment to accept the unglamorous role in which he was assigned; number9/10 batsmen and 6th/7th bowling option. In an age when Generation Y is all to often exclusively focussed onthemselves and what others can do for them - Nick's understanding and embrace of sense of team was second tonone. Never once did Nick complain about the role in which he was assigned and, at such a young age, Nick can beclassed as a true club person and one of the most solid team mates anyone could have. Personally, I was delightedwith some of Nick's personal contributions including 34no versus Box Hill and a match winning 14no versusEndeavour Hills in Round 1. Nick needs work on the consistency of his bowling (as I often admonished Nick duringthe Season; "you are NOT quick enough to not bowl consistent lines and lengths") as well as his fielding to becomethe bona fide 2nd XI all-rounder that the club needs. That said, Nick's thirst for learning and bettering himself isunparalleled and he is sometimes forgotten given his quiet and unassuming nature. Nick - you are a great kid andhave all the attributes to be a long time all-round contributor at the Falcons

Lester Herathge and Steve White - have bundled these two "old-timers" together given the consistency of comment Ihave with regards to both. In a Season in which the commitment and emphasis was on youth, at various times, bothLester and Whitey proved themselves as the few consistently good 2nd XI cricketers that the club had and furthercompounded the issue that the 2nd XI was reliant upon players in the twilight of their career (and Tom). Lester's halfcenturies versus both Noble Park and Williamstown were, put simply, innings' that only Lester con play; controlledaggression bordering on the explosive. When Lester is in form, there are very few 2nd XI batsmen in the competitionwho are as destructive as Lester. Much like an Adam Gilchrist, if set a platform - Lester can take the game away fromthe opposition within 30 to 40 minutes. Whitey was, well, Whitey; a solid all-round contributor who is solelyfocussed on the development of the next generation as opposed to his own game. Once again crippled with soft tissueinjuries and either missing games or being hamstrung during games, Whitey religiously made 20 to 30 everytime hebatted as well as contributing with the ball when the body and occasion allowed. I am conscious that Whitey will bestepping down from 2nd XI cricket this coming Season and what is a great all-round gain for the 3rd XI becomes amassive hole for the 2nd XI to fill in hard nosed cricket

Naythan Lynch - since his arrival in the 2nd XI at the start of Season 2012/2013, I have no qualms in stating norapologising for the fact that Naythan has always been a pet project player of mine. Naythan grew as a cricketersignificantly in the Season past. His end output of 14 wickets at 28 does not really do his Season's contribution thejustice it deserves. Naythan was the pick of our 2nd XI bowlers in most One Day games played and was clearly, overall, our best bowler after Christmas. Naythan's talent is not questioned but, given his young age, must learncricket smarts; lines to bowl to certain batsmen, when to attack, when to defend, how to bowl to fields set. WhenNaythan learns the nuances of his own game, undoubtably, only the sky will be the limit. His development during thecourse of 2013/2014 only was exceptional and if he continues this trajectory of development, he will quicklyestablish himself as a VSDCA 1st XI option/weapon

Young brigade coming through - in a commitment to developing the next generation of Falcon, significant game timeopportunity was presented to the likes of Shashin (73 runs at 12), Cam D'Cruz (19 runs at 3), Bodi Duxson (14 runsat 3), Jacob Hazledine (47 runs at 6), Tristan Plunkett (3 wickets at 40), Brendan Hoornweg (7 wickets at 38) andJarrod Elms (2 wickets at 53) to varying degrees of success. Through no fault of many of the younger players listed, many found themselves, through lack of depth at the club, playing a grade higher than would have been best for theirdevelopment. Brendan showed glimpses during different games but must work on the consistency of his all-roundgame and body language when not directly involved in the game. Shashin showed moments in his return to the 2ndXI for the last 4 games of the Season in getting a start on each occasion. Tristan Plunkett, despite a lack of wickets, showed he is capable of being a very good bowler at 2nd XI level and a capable/serviceable 1st XI option. If being100% honest, the hyped arrivals of Bodi Duxson and Jacob Hazledine proved, unfortunately, to be unmitigatedfailures (for different reasons). Cameron D'Cruz, despite a poor output of 19 runs from 7 games, showed on differentoccasions that he could bat, bowl and keep at this level. As I have discussed with Cameron, he needs focus on hiskeeping/middle or lower order batting to derive the most of his talent for team and self. That said, for mine - given his

Page 16: Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows Cricket Club Inc.rpcc.vic.cricket.com.au/files/1156/files/14/annual report 2013-2014... · The diversity of their respective skill sets ensured a rounded

outright competitiveness, cricket smarts and commitment to the team; Cameron is the one to watch with regards tothe next generation of young cricketers who tasted 2nd XI cricket this Season for the first time. With this regard, Ibelieve that Cameron has the ability and attributes to, one day, play VSDCA 1st XI cricket.

A quick call out to recognise and thank the experienced collection of Ian Lynch (7 games), Ben Rose (6 games) andRhys Ashen (4 games) who contributed, not just with bat and ball, in most games they played. Their collectiveexperience and understanding of the game was a significant help as the side endeavoured to mould and develop theyoung player talent so prevalent in the side most weeks.

All said, I truly consider Season 2013/2014 a most disappointing year with regards to results and whilst the 2nd XIhas not been flush with success in recent years - the fact that the team was in a position to win 6 or 7 of the 13 gamesthat we played, yet only one two, is most disappointing.

The 2nd XI will move in a new direction in Season 14/15 with a new leader. Again, this team will be littered withyoung playing talent that is complimented by an older head or two. I look forward with immense expectation as towhat this group can achieve individually and collectively, moving forward, as the club seeks to enter a new era of allgrade competitiveness/success. As the club continues it recruiting in the off-season, our young players (across allgrades) should accept the fact that there will now be competition for their places. This is a good thing. Many playersacross all grades, including the 2nd XI, were playing a grade too high in the Season gone and the rectification of thisthrough recruitment will allow the individual to better develop/grow through both personal and team success. I onlyhope and trust that the foundations of tough, uncompromising, competitive cricket laid down by myself over the past3 years contributes, somewhat, to future successes that the 2nd XI are bound to enjoy.

Yours in cricketBen Wood2nd XI Captain

3rd ELEVEN REPORTThe season of 2013/14 was a tough year on field without much success. Unfortunately we finished 12th with 3 wins,2 draws and 8 losses, with one of those losses being an outright loss. Throughout the year we had 33 players comethrough the 3rd 11, which in my view is way too many. To be a successful and consistent side, we need to have atleast 8-10 regular players available each week so the future captain can set out some sort of batting and bowlingstructure and be confident each week with his batting/bowling orders. On a positive note, we won more games thanthe previous year where the 3rd 11 didn’t win a game.

Training- I believe last season there were too many players in the 3rd 11 who couldn’t make training on a regularbasis, including myself. Players who are more committed should get more of an opportunity in the higher grades, sothose players will know their hard work off the track is being rewarded. I also believe the lower grades need moreexposure to better quality batsman and bowlers on a week to week basis. One thing we found in the 3rd 11 this yearwas when we come up against a higher level bowler or batsman at time, they seemed to dominate the top orderbatsman/bowlers and basically tore us apart. This happened in 3 games where i believe lost us the games before westarted basically. Being 4 or 5 for bugger all nearly every week makes it hard to put a competitive score on the boardand exposes the middle-late order batsman too early, which happened on too many occasions.

Selection- Next season we need to make it clear at the start of the season that player are to play where selected, noquestions asked. This killed the 3’s this year.

Game day- Being based at Progress Reserve presents many challenges for captains. Next season i believe we try ashard as we can to get a team manager for the lower grades, even if 2-3 people are alternating each week. It puts a lotof pressure on Anthony and myself getting to the ground early, trying to set up cones, scoreboards, opening rooms, ensuring drinks and morning tea is organised, making sure money is collected and given to the umpire etc. One of thehardest tasks on a Saturday was getting every player to the ground on time. I don’t think there was one occasionwhere all players were ready to take the field for a warm-up on time. This stuffs up the preparation for the game andyou’re eventually rushing to take the field after the warm-up because you’re trying to get as much out of it as youcan.

Individual performances/Batting- Unfortunately it was a terrible season with the bat with only 2 players making over100 runs for the season and myself winning the batting average with 17.76 is not good enough. I had a terrible season

Page 17: Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows Cricket Club Inc.rpcc.vic.cricket.com.au/files/1156/files/14/annual report 2013-2014... · The diversity of their respective skill sets ensured a rounded

with the bat, very inconsistent which is one thing i believe the captain of the side should be. Asif at times playedsome good innings, but let himself down too often throwing his wicket away with some terrible outs. Nath Ramadgeput his hand up on a couple occasions to open the batting. This didn’t work as well as we’d like but i was verygrateful one of the young guys put their hand up for the side. With a bit of work with a specialist batting coach, ibelieve Nath can become a good solid opening batsman, as he will always play for the team. Liam struggled this yearopening the batting in the 3rd 11. At times i believe he was out of his depth but as we all know, he bleeds for the cluband will do whatever is required for the team. He is a solid batsman but struggles to put bad balls away, which putsmore pressure on him to try and score which results in bad shot selection at times. Ando had a shocking year with 87runs at 10. Like myself still trying to get the hang of the turf wickets and will only get better from a full seasonplaying on it. Sri also had a shocker like the rest of us.

Individual performances/Bowling- Bowling was probably the only highlight for the season. There were many gameswhere we would bowl sides out for low scores but out batting performances let us down. Matt English was thestandout with 28 wickets at 22. He was always consistent with his lines and lengths, something i believe the youngerblokes should take a leaf out of his book. Lack of games with most bowlers makes it hard to assess, but all the youngblokes bowled extremely well and will only get better with more and more bowling on turf. Jarrod ended up beingone of our strike bowlers and took the job with both hands. Kyle is going to be a gun, needs more work on his rhythmbut when he builds up some strength and matures a bit, he’s going to be a very handy bowler in the top grades. Mowas a breath of fresh air in the games he played. He’s a very hand bowler and very enthusiastic on the field.

Lastly i would like to thank Stephen Ramadge, Lee and Gary elms, Jimmy and Di Earp and all the ladies who helpedout with afternoon tea, scoring and just general help. I would also like to thank Anthony Rosta and Tyson Sinclair forcoming up to the 3’s to help me out in the latter part of the season. Eric Russka and Dave Lawson for having a gamewhen required and helping notch up our first win. Shaun Anderson, Dave Grant, Liam Patrick and Matt English forhelping me out with the on field captaincy decisions throughout the year and the committee for backing me to captainthe 3rd 11.

Tim English3rd XI Captain

4th ELEVEN REPORTFirst and foremost I would like to personally thank each and every player who played in the 4th XI this year. Yourcommitment and enthusiasm made it a very easy and enjoyable job to captain the team this year.

Team success is generally measured on games won and/or finals played in, but in the case of the 4th XI, with thechallenges presented each and every week to place a team on the field, I feel the best measure of success is seeing theimprovement week to week in each player. That not only relates to the juniors coming up through the ranks but alsoto the older players, not just out there to win but also to improve their games and guide the juniors and youngerplayers on their course to greater achievements.

I would like to extend a special thank you to all the off field helpers who made my job so much easier each week.Gary and Lee Elms whose help in scoring and setting up tea was greatly appreciated and also to Jimmy and Di Earpfor their help with tea.

On field, I would like to thank Dave Grant and Tyson Sinclair, whose help week to week with setting up and packingup cannot go unnoticed.

Also, whilst I was unable to be a part of the last 3 or 4 games, I would like to thank Javed Warsi, Ian Wilkins and IanLynch for leading the team in my absence and continuing the culture we had established earlier in the year.I would also like to make mention of the all the juniors who made themselves available each and every week andnever once let themselves or the club down.

It was a real pleasure and highlight to watch them all play and improve week in, week out. Finally, I would like to congratulate Javed Warsi (batting) and Ian Wilkins (bowling) on their individual awards thisyear. I truly enjoyed playing cricket with each of you and hope we play many more games together.

Unfortunately I will not be continuing in the role next year, so I would like say thank you to everyone from thecoaches and committee, right down to the supporters who have made this a fantastic year and I hope to see you allagain next year.

Anthony Rosta4th XI Captain

5th ELEVEN REPORTFirstly, I would like the match selection committee of Ben Wood, Mitch Johnstone and Tim Branagan for appointingme as captain for the season 2013-14. The challenge to develop and nurture the younger players had finally paid offand along with the other senior players , it was a fantastic season of cricket culminating with winning the premiershipfor the first time. Thanks to Mitch Johnstone and Tim Branagan for the support and coaching throughout the season.

I would like to thank all the players who played under me and working hard right to the end, special thanks to Dave’sfootball friends viz., Dean , Corey, Mitch and Brian who helped us field a team at the start of the season.

The season was competitive and dominant for most of the season . This is mainly due to the fact that our top 4batsmen scoring 1500 runs between them and our bowlers taking wickets consistently to help us win our games ,special mention to the leading wicket taker of the whole competition Connor Garland.

Connor Garland, Adi Berry and Lachlan D’Cruz - I would really like to commend the efforts of these young playerswho played with me given they play in the mornings and come back to play in the afternoons. Their perseverance anddedication was a pleasure to watch and I was very fortunate to nurture them and see them grow into fine youngcricketers for the future.

I would also like to mention the following performances throughout the season:

Jihad Mourad and Brock Heathcote for their commendable batting at the top of the order which set the platform forthe lower order to set up some formidable targets for the opposition. Sean Fernandes was a constant inspiration to theteam with very consistent batting that carried on right through the finals.

I must also say that it was great to have Mark Garland play alongside me and advise me during match days aboutfield placings and other on field tactics . Thanks to Brian Grant too for coming and playing with us throughout theseason.

I would also like to thank Peter Gaff , Lee Elms and Steve Ramadge who helped update the scores online. I know itwas tedious at times to tally up but do appreciate the effort of all to try and rectify the book and make the scores tally.

Last but not least I must thank the match selection committee of Ben Wood , Rosta and Mitch Johnston for putting ateam together throughout the season .

I look forward to the next season and thank all club members for helping throughout the season , for all on and offfield activities.

I would like to thank all the coaches and their assistants, this includes the parents who assisted each week withscoring and square leg umpiring , without the assistance of parents there would be no team, a huge thank you to PeterGaff, who does a ton of work behind the scenes every week, opening the rooms for training and on game day/night,marking the grounds, arranging for the pitch to be mowed for the U10 game, handing out the game balls and umpiremonies to coaches each week, putting the scores and stats in to mycricket.

Lee Elms (Ms)Junior Co-ordinator/Administrator

HATCH SHIELD REPORTThe HATCH shield is open to all eligible U15 players. Players are invited to try out to represent the RPBCCFirstly, I would like to thank the coaches Mitchell Streiff (Head coach), Daniel Patrick and Kurt Brandt (AssistantCoaches) and Mick Streiff (Team Manager).

Approximately 45 invitation letters were sent to 45+ elite players from within the NWMCA region. After several try-outs 13 players were selected:

Alex Mills (Capt.), Kyle Newnham (V/Capt.), Reshan Wijayanayake (V/Capt.), Thomas Baker, Mitchell Eilers,Rohan Gandhi, Kannan Kanj, Marcus Luisetto, Daniel Mathew, Kavin Mendis, Anthony Noto, Ravi Paligaru andAnthony Ricupero

The squad consisted of players from 7 NWMCA clubs (Aberfeldie, Craigieburn, Greenvale, Pascoe Vale Sports,Roxburgh Park Broadmeadows, St Francis and Strathmore).

This year’s competition was played during some very extreme heat, one game was abandoned others werecommenced earlier with over’s reduced. The team’s morale, enthusiasm and attitude at training and in matches was very good and Mitchell and his coachingstaff I think got the best out of the team. The boys in the games played hard but within the spirit of cricket and were acredit to our club and their parents.

We were very unlucky to just miss out on making the grand final
