A question of strengthFunctionality and reliability of enclosed equipment are dependent upon the details. Electrical installations need to be reliable to cope with customer demands. Inefficient cable penetrations are a weak link. Eliminate that risk.

Roxtec entry seals are built to with-stand high demands of functional cable entry installations in cabinets and other enclosures. Besides pro-tecting sensitive equipment from hazards like water and dust, Roxtec´s sealing system provides unique features. Its design enables future cable additions, area efficien-cy with many cables and routing of preterminated cables. The system is module based, using adaptable seal-

ing modules with a frame and a compression unit to seal the cable entry. The uniqueness lies in the multidiameter module. Thanks to the multi layer technique, each module can handle cables of different dia-meters simply by peeling sheets away from its center. The result is a smart and reliable entry seal that can accommodate a large number of cables with different diameters in one penetration. ■

How it worksThe frame is mounted onto the en-closure, and cables are routed through the frame. The modules are then inserted around the cables insi-de the frame, creating an intrusion-proof seal by compressing the rub-ber modules after tightening. An existing seal can be opened and reconfigured in the same way it is assembled. ■

Assemble the frame to the cabinet. Insert the cables through the frame.

Adapt the modules to the right cable diameter.

Insert the modules around the cables.

Tighten the frame screws to compress the seal.

Adding real valueRoxtec cable entry seals meet the specified requirements and even goes beyond them. Our sealing system is developed with the user in mind. This is the result.

Future includedRoxtec facilitates adding or changing cables within an existing seal. Area efficiency Each frame can accommodate a large amount of cables in cramped areas, creating an efficient use of valuable space and at the same time providing a well-organized cable installation. The compact design of the sealing system minimizes the area used for cable penetrations.

Preterminated cablesRoxtec offers the unique capability of routing preterminated cables with their connectors attached during the installation. This saves installation time and ensures the undisturbed function of the system. The guaran-tee certificate from the cable supplier is valid and you avoid sources of error. ■

Flexible solutionsThe flexibility of Roxtec cable entry seals makes it simple to install sev-eral cables of various diameters. With only four module sizes you can seal cables with diameters from 3.5 to 32.5 millimeters (0,138-1,280"). Since the seals are supplied with a center core they can also be used to seal parts of a transit where no cables are inserted.

Shieldedapplications

Electromagnetic compatibility, EMC, means that electric and electronic devices can operate together in a common electromagnetic environ-ment, without causing malfunctions in each other. All electric and elec-tronic devices affect the electro-magnetic environment, often in a way which is detrimental to other such devices. Currents and volt-ages inadvertently generated by electric circuits are spread as unwanted currents, or as electro-

magnetic waves which in turn gene-rate currents in metallic objects. Such “electromagnetic garbage” is called electromagnetic disturbance, and it may cause malfunctions in other electric or electronic devices.

DisturbanceElectromagnetic disturbances may and do cause serious hazards by interfering with life support systems, navigational equipment, signal and security systems, radio, TV, and

telecommunications and computer systems.

Careful designFor practical purposes, EMC is the measure of two qualities in a device. 1) The level of electromagnetic dis-turbances generated – the less, the better, and 2) The level of immunity the device has to electromagnetic disturbances – the higher, the bet-ter.

Both qualities come at a price, since EMC requires careful design. Real life designs are, of course, a compromise between cost and per-formance. There will always be some electromagnetic disturbances generated. The fact that most elec-tric and electronic devices are inter-connected by cables and wires means that electromagnetic distur-bances are spread over large areas.

Shielded cablesIn electric and electronic installa-tions, EMC is usually a matter of stopping and neutralizing whatever electromagnetic disturbances there is. This is done by using shielded (screened) cables and by proper grounding.

GroundingThe cable screen protects the cable conductors from generated elec-tromagnetic disturbances by letting incoming electromagnetic waves

generate currents in the screen, on the outside of the cable, rather than in the conductors inside the cable. Vice versa, the screen blocks elec-tromagnetic fields generated by the currents inside the cable from reaching outside the cable. The result is that currents, stray cur-rents, will flow in the cable screen. The influence of the stray currents, is neutralized by providing them a path to ground. Ground, or earth, is an engineering term for a general reference point, 0 V, for most electric and electronic devices.

The Roxtec EMC system provides such a current path between cable shields and ground. The screen of the cables passing through the same cable inlet are grounded via the Roxtec EMC system modules and frame. Conductive layers inside the modules also stop elec-tromagnetic waves which would

otherwise pass between the cables from one side of the penetration to the other. These layers are also grounded via the frame which sur-rounds the modules.

Current pathThe frame itself is grounded to a designated grounding point via e.g.a ground wire. The grounding point is selected according the demands of each separate installation, after a professional analysis. ■

■ Natural tallow is used to lubricate the sealing modules and the inside of the frame. This provides a secure seal and brings ease to the installation.

■ Compensation modules can not hold cables. They are used to fill out the last 0.197" to 0.394" in an opening, if needed, or as a separator between modules.
