Designed by Dennis Purcell, author of Minor injuries: a clinical guide, this course is for practitioners with experience of musculoskeletal (MSK) assessment. It focuses on the assessment of minor hand injuries and the premise that healthy posture is built from the foot upwards so you need to know more about this area than how to diagnose a sprained ankle.

Aims and objectivesThis course will help you to:1 Gain a deeper understanding of upper and lower limb anatomy, with a detailed review of the MSK and neurovascular anatomy of the forearm, wrist and hand and the lower leg, ankle and foot.2 Understand the process of history taking and examination of the upper and lower limb, with the objectives of: discriminating between injury and disease in limb presentations; between injuries to bone, muscle and ligament; and assessing the posture of the foot and its relationship to problems in other parts of the body.3 Gain an awareness of common injuries and conditions affecting the limbs, and arising in other parts of the body from postural problems in the foot.4 Develop management skills for conditions in the hand and foot, including initial care and decisions on rehabilitation and referral.

What’s included• History taking/documentation• Upper limb anatomy, with emphasis on wrist and hand• Upper limb examination, with emphasis on wrist and hand• Upper limb injuries and conditions• Lower limb anatomy, with emphasis on ankle and foot• Lower limb examination, with emphasis on ankle and foot• Lower limb conditions and injuries, and other problems related to the foot• Treatment of common presentations• Decision making: when to refer and when to treat • EvaluationsWhere and when London15-17 May 2013: Guy’s Hospital
