    Can I redirect mail from anywhere?

    We can redirect your mail from most UK addresses to any other UK or

    overseas* addresses, including British Forces and PO Box addresses.

    *Redirections to European Union destinations (excluding the UK) are

    subject to VAT at the standard rate.

    We can only redirect mail from an address you've actually lived at.

    Redirecting mail without proper authority is a criminal offence.European Countries (excluding the UK) which are members of the

    European Union are:

    Bulgaria Hungary Portugal

    Cyprus Ireland (Republic of) Romania

    Czech Republic Italy Slovakia

    Are there any types of mail that can't be redirected?

    We cannot set up a redirection service from overseas to UK addresses.

    We may be required by law not to redirect social security and other

    benefits mail. We can also be required by law to pass on your

    redirection details to the Benefit Agency or Local Authority.

    We can't redirect business mail if you apply for a home redirection.

    Special Delivery and Recorded Signed For items cannot be redirected

    abroad.

    We also can't redirect items delivered by other delivery services,

    including Parcelforce Worldwide and courier companies.

    We reserve the right to pass on your Redirection details to selected

    organisations to help prevent fraud and money laundering.

    International Mail - Any item bigger than Letter format over 25mm

    thickness & over 100g that clearly contains goods cannot be redirected

    abroad.

    Any Letter format items or Large Letter format items obviously

    containing printed-paper up to 25mm thickness & 100g can be

    redirected abroad.

    Will my redirected mail arrive late?

    Yes, usually one day later than normal post however redirected items

    are treated as first class.

    How do I change my redirection details?

    To make a simple change like a spelling correction, call our CustomerService Centre on 0845 7740 740 (or +44 1752 387 116 if calling from

    abroad) and we'll make the change straight away.

    For other changes, please write to your local Redirection Centre - their

    address will be on any letters you've been sent about your redirection. If

    you can't find it, please call the number above.

    If your redirection has started and you want to change the forwarding

    address, you'll need to reapply.

    We'll write to you two to four weeks before it runs out to let you know.

    Then you can either renew online or through the post using the Freepost

    envelope we'll send, or you can do it over the phone and pay by credit

    or debit card.

    We're sorry, but currently you cannot renew your redirection at the PostOffice.

    How do I cancel?

    You can cancel at any time. But we can't refund any payment if the

    service has already started. You'll need to write to your Redirection

    Centre - their address is on any letters you will have received about

    your redirection.

    What happens to my mail if I cancel?

    At the end of the agreed period, we'll deliver mail to where it'saddressed. So if it's your old address, that's where it'll go.

    What if I move again while you're still redirecting my mail?

    You can either:

    Cancel your first 'A to B' redirection and set up new 'B to C' and 'A to C'

    redirections. You'll need to pay for two new redirections, and we won't

    be able to refund your initial payment. But mail from address 'A' will still

    reach you just one day later.

    Or

    Keep your original 'A to B' redirection and add a 'B to C' one. You'll onlyhave to pay for one additional Redirection, but your mail from address

    'A' will take a bit longer to reach you as it's being routed via 'B'.

    How do I set up a Redirection?

    All you need to do is fill in a redirection form, available from your local

    Post Office.You can pay by cash or cheque (with a guarantee card).

    And you'll also need two forms of original ID:

    one of each from the list on your application form

    dated within the last six months (for bills, statements etc.)

    ID for each different surname at the same addressNext, just pop it in the post along with your payments and ID - using the

    Freepost envelope provided. We accept joint cheques and ID, as long as

    both surnames are shown clearly.

    Don't forget:

    If everyone on the form has the same surname, we only need to see ID

    from the main applicant

    Everyone who wants their mail redirected must sign the aplication form

    Children under 16 need their forms signed by their parent or guardian

    Make copies of all your ID before sending the originals to us. We'll return

    the originals to you in ten working daysWe'll write to confirm when your redirection will start

    How long does it take to set up?

    Normally five working days from receipt of your application, as long as

    we receive your fully completed form, along with your ID and payment.

    We won't accept applications without valid ID for each surname.

    Booking an appointment to enrol your biometric information

    Enrolling your biometric information - postal applications

    This page explains how you can book an appointment to enrol your fingerprints and facial image (known as

    'biometric information') at one of our public enquiry offices or biometric enrolment centres, if you have sent

    us an application by post to extend your stay or settle in the UK.You can book an appointment using our online booking service or by phone.

    You do not need to enrol your biometric information unless we have sent you a biometric notification

    lettertelling you that you must do so. For more information and other options for enrolment, see the

    Enrolling your biometric information page.

    Before you start, we advise you to read all the information provided on this website about your type of

    immigration application, and the relevant guidance notes.

    You should only book 1 appointment, for the date and time that you need. If you cannot attend the

    appointment that you have booked, you should phone 0870 606 7766 to cancel the appointment and book

    a new appointment.

    You should not book a family appointment for a group of unrelated people. Family appointments are only

    for people who are applying as a family unit under 1 application. Groups of students or employees making

    separate applications must not book a family appointment, even if they are living at the same address.

    They must book separate individual appointments. If a group of unrelated people book and attend a family

    appointment, they will be told to re-book their appointments separately.

    Online booking

    Online booking is a fast, simple and convenient way of securing an appointment, allowing you to book

    when it suits you.

    The online booking service can be used by individuals and by family groups of up to 10 people who are

    applying together. You can securely:

    search for an appointment based on date, time, location and application type;

    request and confirm an appointment slot;

    receive a request confirmation; and

    view and print your appointment booking after it has been confirmed.

    You can find a link to the online booking website on the right side of this page.

    Before you can book an appointment, you will need to register to use the service. You will then be sent

    login details, which will allow you to return to the website and book your appointment.

    Requirements for online booking

    You can book your appointment online if:

    you have a valid email address;

    there are not more than 10 people in your family group (including yourself) who require an appointment;

    and

    you have a case reference identification number, provided to you in your biometric notification letter from

    the UK Border Agency.

    Booking by phone

    Our phone booking service is the only way to book an appointment for large family groups of 11 people or

    more who are applying together. It is also available to any customer who prefers to make an appointment

    by phone.

    What will happen on the day?

    Applying in person

    This page explains the process you will follow when making an application at one of our public enquiry

    offices. The processes vary slightly, depending on which office you attend, but the following is a general

    guide to what you can expect.

    The times given are approximate ones for Croydon and may vary depending on the number and type of

    applications we receive on the day. You should allow for the possibility that your application may take

    longer. At Solihull, Glasgow, Liverpool and Sheffield your wait may be shorter than this.

    Premium applications

    Arriving at the public enquiry office

    Follow the signs to the public enquiry office. (At Croydon, follow the signs to 'Appointments'.) You musthavebooked an appointment in advance.

    If you are applying at Croydon, please arrive with photocopies of your supporting documentation, and bring

    your original documents with you so that we can compare them with the photocopies. If you do not do this,

    we may take longer to consider your case. Photocopies do not need to be notarised or certified by a

    solicitor.

    Security - 10 minutes

    For your own safety, you will go through an airport-style security check. Your personal possessions will all

    be scanned, and any sharp or dangerous objects will be taken away. Please do not bring penknives.

    There is nowhere for you to leave luggage. If you bring large bags, you will need to carry them with you at

    all times. We strongly recommend that you do not bring luggage into our Cardiff office, owing to the size of

    its waiting area. There are lifts at the Liverpool office. At Croydon, lifts are available for the elderly, people

    with young children and people with disabilities. The Solihull, Glasgow, Cardiff and Sheffield offices are on

    the ground floor.

    Reception - 10 minutes

    You will be called to a counter at reception, where an officer will complete some preliminary checks on your

    application. Please have all your documents ready. The officer will tell you whether your application can be

    considered in the public enquiry office today, or whether you must apply elsewhere or provide extra

    documentation.

    To ensure that you are prepared when you arrive, please look at the information on this website, read theforms carefully and phone our immigration enquiry bureau on 0870 606 7766 if you have any queries.

    If you are applying as a student under Tier 4 of the points-based system, please ensure that your education

    provider is a registered sponsor. We will refuse your application if your education provider is not registered.

    We will only accept original documents. Any computer printouts must be validated. For example, a printout

    of your bank statement must be validated by your bank (which means that someone at the bank must

    officially stamp and sign the printout).

    If your application can be considered on the day, your application form will be stamped and you will be

    directed to the payment desk. At Croydon, we will give you a ticket and tell you where you need to go.

    Please keep this ticket handy, as you will need to show it to both staff and security throughout your time in

    the public enquiry office.

    If you need to obtain a biometric residence permit as part of your application, we will remind you that you

    must provide your biometric information.

    Paying your application fee - 10 minutes

    For information about application fees and how you can pay them, see theHow much does it cost? page.

    You should ensure that we will accept the method of payment you wish to use.

    If you are paying with a credit card or debit card that is not in your name, the person named on the card

    must be present to authorise the transaction.

    After payment, you will be called to a counter to have your application processed or (if you need to obtain a

    biometric residence permit as part of your application) registered.

    Registering your case - 5 to 15 minutes

    If you need to obtain a biometric residence permit as part of your application, we will register your

    application on our immigration database before you enrol your biometric information. You will be asked to

    wait until you are called to the biometric enrolment booth.

    Enrolling your biometric information - 10 to 30 minutes

    When your case has been registered, you will be called to provide your biometric information. We will ask

    you to sign an acknowledgement form, to confirm that you understand what you need to do. We will then

    ask you to place your fingers, followed by your thumbs, on a fingerprint scanner. When your fingerprints

    have been recorded, we will take a digital photograph of your face. You will then be asked to wait until you

    are called to a counter.

    Considering your case - 30 to 45 minutes

    At the counter, an officer will examine your papers and make a number of checks on our immigrationdatabases. You will be asked questions about your application, and your case will be considered according

    to the current Immigration Rules and regulations.

    When the officer has confirmed that your application can be processed, you will be asked to wait while your

    passport and documents are taken to another area.

    We will then notify you of our decision on your application. If we approve your application, we will:

    insert your residence permit into your passport (see below), if you do not need to obtain a biometric

    residence permit as part of your application; or

    tell you that you will receive your biometric residence permit by post, if you need one. We will not give

    you your biometric residence permit on the day of your appointment.

    If we refuse your application, we will give you the appropriate notice of this, and tell you whether you have

    any right to appeal.

    We continue to process applications until we have seen the last customer, but we lock the doors at closing

    time for security reasons. You will still be able to leave the building after this time.

    Inserting a vignette into your passport - 60 minutes

    If you did not need to obtain a biometric residence permit as part of your application, we will:

    scan your passport; and

    insert a sticker (known as a 'vignette'), which states that you have permission to stay in the UK into your

    passport.

    The vignette will include the photograph that you provided with your application. You will be called to a

    counter, where an officer will return your passport and documents. In our Cardiff offices your passport will

    be returned to your correspondence address by special delivery.

    You should check your vignette to ensure that all the details are correct.

    Issuing your biometric residence permit

    If you did need to obtain a biometric residence permit as part of your application, we will not insert a

    vignette into your passport. Instead, we will send you a biometric residence permit by post a few days after

    your appointment. If you need to travel abroad before your permit can be sent to you, you will need to apply

    for a visa from abroad before you can return to the UK.

    What will I need to do if I am making a postal student visa extension

    application?

    The way the process will work with postal applications is that the UKBA will wait until theyhave processed the fee for the extension application before writing to ask you (and yourdependants) to make an appointment to attend one of 7 centres, to give fingerprints and havea facial image taken (the centres are in Croydon, Sheffield, Liverpool, Birmingham, Cardiff,Glasgow and Armagh).

    You must respond straight away to any letters from the UKBA asking you to make anappointment to give your fingerprints and have your photo taken. You must book anappointment within 5 working days of the date of the letter and attend the appointment within15 working days. If you do not respond in time, they are allowed to refuse or disregard yourextension application. This could result in you not being able to stay in the UK. For thisreason, it is sensible not to move address while you are waiting for an extension application

    to be processed. You will have to prioritise attending the appointment over everything else,however important those things are.

    You will probably receive your documents from the UKBA before your receive your BRP.Remember that you do not have your visa extension until you have the card, which will besent by post later. Do not make any arrangements to travel until you have the card, as you donot know how long it will take. Normally you should receive your BRP within 4 weeks ofattending your biometric appointment.
