WESTRALIA's 'at home' in Newcastle

Ilaving arrived in Newcastle to re fit in J anuary this year, the Ship's company o r HM AS WESTRALIA (Commander W.F. Garner), can now call themselves NovaCllsl rians.

The people of Newcastle have gone to a lot of trouble to ensure the crew have not gone wan ting fo r anything. reports our correspondent .

"With most of us being West Austral ians - a long way from home - this has been ve ry .... elcome. W

While the ship has been sitting high and d ry in Forgacs noating dock , the troops have been silting just as high but not so dry in the friend ly surrounds of the RadiS$On Newcastle lIo tel.

The hotel sta ff ha"e coped exceptionally well in catering for some 70 sui lors and the unique demands they can make.

TIle involvement of WESTRA Ll A 's officers ~nd senior sai lors as guests.

ABCKs Sheppard and Thorjusson in l he kitchen and II n i ne·picce Navy con· cert band at a recent runelion wcloomins the ne .... lynamed Radisson Newcastle into the Radisson chain, demonstrated the strcnglh of the relalionship between lhe hotel and the ship.

The ship's company also had the fo rtune \0 be invited 10 a ba r~e hosted by Mr Stcven Fo rgacs. the owner o f the floating dock.

Held on his property just outside Neweastle , WESl :RALIA mixed with workers and managers doing the refit work.

Goulash. made according 10 Stevc'S mum's secrci recipe, was one of the highl ights.

Spending such an unusu·

a lly long time in the East has allowed the ship's company to participate in some otherwise predominantly ell5tern·based ship activities .

One example was the Old Windsor Cup Rugby Sevens competition.

Fielding a Rugby team from a ship full of Aussic Rules players was no small feat. but fortunate ly only a -sevensW team was required.

Despite their inexperience. the WESTRALlANs progressed to the second round . comfonably defeating J E RVIS BAY in the first .

Unfo rtunately success was to be shon-lived on encounte ring BRISOANE III

the next round .

With its 1solation and l' ''nquil waters the area was an excellent training ground for clandestine operations against hpanese forces in South East Asia.

Apart from numerous aouy gun baltcrics sprinkled along ihe wcstern Side of the island facing the Indian Ocean as part of the Pon of Fremantle's defences, Ihe only othe r inhabitants were the numerous tammar wallabies. carpe t and tige r snakes, along wi th other varieties of fauna and birdlife.

On the open sandy shores of Careening Bay were located two jellies. va rious workshops , mess and Nissen sto rage huts .....hich housed Weiman midget subm~uines and the motor submersible canoes. bener known as MSleeping Ikaut ies-.

The Federation is concerned that one aspect of the current redundancy programme is the lack 01 a leyel playing field concerning subsequent employment in the Australian Public SeMoe. Persoonel cannot be expected to make up their minds on such an importam Issue when part of the rules is likely to change. thiS needs 10 be resolved as a matter of urgency. Accordingly, the FederatIOn has WIlnen a letter to the Mtnislero! Defence Science and Personnel requesting his urgent recoosideration oIlh'$ polICY .

The Federation letter points oul that to gain employment in these recessionary I,mes is nea r impossible , without the added impediment of Iha II Service Commissioner effectively plaQng restrictions on the employment of redundant Defence Force personnel in the APS. (In 1992 an Army legal opinion doubled the legality of this decision and we believe thaI it has overtones of discnmination 10 the employment 01 SeTVlCe personnel),

Why cannol an individual accepl the Public Service Commissioner's Decision 01 December 23, 1992 as a confirmed condition lor lhe current redundancy programme?

It seems unfair that Service personnel, who initially joined lhe Service for a probable career, are having their employment shortened through no fault of their own. With these additional barriers put in place by the Public SeMce Commissioner, it would appear thaI the Serviceman, who receives a redundancy. is being severely disadvantaged.

---The inaugural ADF :

The 1993 Callbt-rn t' estival has brought out the competit ive spirit in some of the Nava l Materiel division members of the Defen ce organisatio n.

The lure o f the victor'S dais and the prospect of having some fun prompted a few 10 emer a team in the D ragon boal raeing carnival on Lake Burley-Griffin a~ part of the Canberra Day celebrations.

Cheered on by a la rge contingent of supporters and the social d ub patron RADM Hammond, the team won all four heats and gained second place in the final in the open Government category behind a team Imm City Parks.

The NAYMAT team's best time for the 500m course was two minutes 19 seconds, which was not bad eon~idering Ihe top h:am's tim.:s w.:re 2-06 through to 2-14.

After some h.:ctic practices at an un-Godly hour o n Sunday mornings in the preceding weekends, the NAVMAT Social aub team put in a creditable performance in both the hea ts and the fin al.

The competition was both fie rce a lld fu n-fi lled. One hundred and three teams fro m all over Australia and overseas competed in hundreds of heats and a dozen fin als.

It was the biggest Dragon boat carnival he ld in Australia.

n le Singapore men's team which won the in ternational final gave a lesson to a ll on how it should be done.

Each team was given four heats in which to race, with the averaSe time to complete all four detennining which teams would compete in the fina l.

The NA VMAT team was gillen a JO s.:oond boost (ie time reduced by to sec) after being rammed b) a compe1l1or in their first heat.

Thc final heattimcs were 2-19 (.Idjusted) . 2-28. 2-30 and 2-19 (actual) .

They had the best ave rage tim,· of any Governmem team and most of the r':SI of the field o f teams.

Business Review Weekly calls it u ••• one of the most secure long term investments available." We believe it is the ideal investment for members of the Navy.

Now you c.an buy an architect designed residential property with the security of a ten year lease with the Defence Housing Authority. As well as paying your rent every month for ten years the DHA will also manage the property on your behalf.

These "hassle free" investment properties are structured and arranged by Residential Investment Australia Pty Ltd.

With our combination of In-house Merchant Banking, tax and property development skills, RIA will tailor this investment to suit your own tax and cashflow position. We can arrange a competitive banking facility and oversee the design and construction of your DHA approved home. Your property will be fully landscaped and fitted out - right down to the TV antenna and fly wire screens!

RIA can structure these $135,000 - $195,000 investment properties to cost you as little as $35 per week (after allowing for all expenses such as interest, rates, insurance etc.)

By the time you leave the Navy you could be in a position to own one of these properties outright! It is an ideal tax effective addition to your super and gives you an edge in property for the future . The secret of successful long term property investment is in how it is financially structured .

RIA works in close consultation with DHA and we now have a number of approved DHA home sites in various growth localities which fall outside the zones in which Navy members cou ld be asked to live. Call either Murray Witkin or Sean Hoare on (008) 814 092 and ask for your own FREE tailored investment report and a comprehensive brochure that describes how this investment works.
