Dear Parents,

The IAPS Fencing Championships seems to have taken place an age ago when in actual fact it was only last weekend. Eva,

Christopher and Emily performed particularly well having travelled all the way to Millfield in Somerset to compete. My thanks to

their parents and Mrs Lloyd for supporting them during the weekend.

The Croydon Performing Arts festival was in full swing as well with many Junior School children performing in a wide variety of

categories. We had good success with recorders and guitars and my thanks to Mrs Moseley, Miss Fox and Mr Davies for

accompanying and preparing the children.

Year 6 transformed into a DT factory this week as they busily set about constructing working fairground rides aided and abeted by

teachers and some willing (??) parents. My thanks to Mr Barton, Mrs Thurbin, Mrs Wood and Mrs Peart-Smith for lending their

expertise to the children.

Tomorrow sees us host the IAPS National Trampoline Championships in the sports hall. Over 200 competitors will be bouncing

from 0900 tomorrow and we wish all of our trampolinists the very best of luck. My thanks to the estates team for turning the hall

into a competition venue and to all the volunteers who are helping out tomorrow. Not forgetting Mrs Lloyd, who is once again

masterminding the whole event.

The Junior School hall will be ‘calling’ to the voice of Mrs Moseley this evening as the sold out Barn Dance takes place. I am sure

there will be a great deal of fun had by all involved and my thanks to the 1853 Society team for putting on the event.

In amongst everything else this week we have had the House times tables challenge, Y5 have visited Shoreham for a field study,

Year 4 visited the Tate Modern and Year 5 parents found out all about the Isle of Wight trip in September, alongside an introduction

to the senior school transfer process….and breathe now!

I have no doubt many of you will be glued to the TV tomorrow either watching the Royal Wedding or The FA Cup Final and of

course our best wishes go to the happy couple Harry and Meghan.

Have a great weekend one and all.

Best wishes.

James C Thompson

Join in 21st to 25th May

To promote Walk to School Week, staff will be at the Heathfield Car Park in Riesco Drive (along Ballards Way) to receive your children between 8am and 8.15am if they should wish to walk some of the way to school with us.If you wish for your child to join us on these walks, please ensure they are handed to a member of staff to be registered.

At 8.15am, staff will walk the children to school.By handing your children over to staff, you are consenting to us accompanying them between Riesco Drive and school. We are promoting walking and in the interest of health and safety, we request that children travel on foot rather than on wheels for this activity.

We will also be organising optional walking activities during playtimes for children to join in with if they wish. Many thanks for helping us to promote healthy, physical activity and reduce traffic flow in and out of the car park.

In order to promote walking as a healthy, environmentally friendly, physical activity, we would like to invite you and your children to support our Walk to School Week between Monday 21st – Friday 25th May.

If you can avoid driving your car through the school gates, please do so, using public transport, walking, cycling or scootering instead of driving.

If you plan to drive and walk some of the way to school, please avoid parking on Ballards Way or Hollingsworth Road as residents use these roads for parking.

Upper Junior House

Drama

On Tuesday 8th May, we had our first House Drama Competition. Everyone had so much fun! First, we auditioned to take part, and

the best got through. After, we had an amazing morning of planning, then we went up to the PAC where we had help

putting our play together from some of the Senior School Drama Scholars. Then we showed our piece to the Upper Juniors.

Every group was awesome, but Exetercame out on top. Thanks Miss Frisby we

had a great day.

I wonder who will win next year?

You could be exposed to ticks whenever you are outdoors and enjoying the countryside, even in your garden or the local park.

Ticks attach themselves to animals to feed and sometimes this can include people.

You can prevent tick bites by walking on clearly defined paths, using insect repellent and performing regular tick checks.

Some tick bites can result in infection so it is important to remove ticks as soon as possible.

Ticks can be removed safely with tweezers or a tick removal tool – ensure it is completely out.

If you have been bitten or recently spent time outdoors and start to feel unwell, please see the school nurse or GP

Year 5 trip to Shoreham Village

Year 5 braved the nice, but somewhat chilly, weather and embarked our a trip to Shoreham Village, to compare the village to the town we have already visited. It was very pretty and quiet, especially during our traffic survey.

There were more than a few expectant faces waiting for the rush of cars, and, even a quiet cheer when a mobility scooter passed! We ambled through fields, along bridle paths and along the river.

Wandered passed cottages, grand houses and pubs. The children were full of fresh country air after a great geographical field trip.

The Under 11 Girls Football Team began the defence of their National Title in fine style last Friday at Ardingly College.

Needing to make the final to qualify for the prestigious tournament at St George’s Park, the girls did just that. They then went one better to win the South East Qualifying tournament with a fine win against a strong Blackheath Prep side.

The Under 13 team have also now qualified for National Finals and we look forward to what could be a momentous day for the girls and the school.

In the second innings we upped our game again and scored a massive 15 rounders. The fielding was simply brilliant and with only a slight improvement of 1 ½ rounders Orchard House were all out again. Final score 22 ½ to 7 ½, wow. This is the first time we have won an IAPS Rounders match!! Congratulations to the whole team who were so supportive and a pleasure to watch maturely play against a very polite and lovely team. Fielding POM Zeena taking some fab catches and batting POM Millie for scoring 3 Rounders off 3 hits in a row! Such a great afternoon, well done girls. Into the final 16!

IAPS Rounders HISTORY!Wow what an amazing game in our first match of the IAPS Rounderscompetition. After a bye in the first round we were straight into round 2! Orchard House were our opponents and we were batting first!

With a score of 7 ½ we needed to rely on our excellent fielding to hold them at bay. With a few big hits we held our nerve and took some amazing catches. The whole team were working superbly well together making great calls and going for every catch and opportunity to get them out. Once into the game Orchard House could only score 3.

On Sunday Eva and Emily were up. Eva had a brilliant morning winning 6 out of 8 fights. Emily in her first competition battled well and picked up key hits. It was the girls turn for DE and unluckily both girls were knocked out in the first round. Well done to the team and thanks to the parents key support, especially Mr Holland our coach for the weekend!

IAPS National Fencing ChampionshipsLast weekend the fencing team travelled to Millfield for the IAPS competition. On Saturday Christopher had an amazing morning winning 6 out of 8 fights seeding him 7th out of 30 U9 boys. Next was DE- direct elimination (win to survive!) Christopher fenced brilliantly into the top 8 with another 2 wins! After a close defeat he finished in a simply awesome 7th place, even more impressive as he was against Y3/4 boys too!

Croydon Performing Arts Festival - GuitarRoyal Russell’s “Performing Arts Centre” was the venue for this year’s guitar classes in the

Croydon Performing Arts Festival. 25 Junior School children from years 2 to 6 took part

and enjoyed a great day of guitar playing.

The entry was organized by Junior School guitar teacher, Roger Davies. A delighted

audience of parents watched as the children played a combination of performances. Some

performed on their own, others as part of a duet with Mr Davies. All the children then played

as part of an ensemble, some as trios, and others as part of a school group.

A special Year 2 guitar group was put together for the occasion to complement the Junior

School’s existing junior and senior guitar groups.

Some fine performances were given by the children, all achieved Merit, Commended and

Distinction certificates.

12 children took part in the Woodwind section of the Festival. The children played in groups showing a range of skills including “playing in a round”, “unison playing” and “playing in 2 part harmony”. The advanced group, who played Descant and Treble Recorder, were awarded a Trophy for their performance of 3 songs.

Nicholas, Alec and Oliver performed in the Solo Workshop Classes and received expert tips and tuition from the adjudicator, Rachel Gregory, who is an accomplished Recorder player.

Then 9 children performed recitals of several songs to show the breadth of their talents. These were competitive classes and after everyone had performed, Uliana and Ava were awarded joint 1st Place and medals in the Grade 1 category, and Dihain was awarded 1st Place and a medal in the Grade 2-3 category.

It takes a lot of courage to stand up and perform to an audience, and several children were nervous at doing so, but Mrs Moseley is immensely proud of them all. Congratulations to all the children for their fine performances and special thanks to Miss Fox for accompanying the

children on the Piano.
