I’m going to talk today about the 1
problem of boredom. Now, it’s true, we 2
encounter boredom less and less, with 3
all of our gadgets and with the totality of 4
human knowledge and artistic output 5
always available to us. When you can 6
always hear your favourite song or 7
watch a great film or read a great book 8
or text a friend because you can do all 9
of these things with the device that you 10
have at your side 24 hours a day, you 11
might successfully avoid boredom for 12
the rest of your life. But you might also 13
never discover what’s on the other side 14
of boredom. And you might not 15
recognise the price you are paying for 16
being compelled to distract yourself, for 17
having lost or having simply never 18
acquired a capacity for doing nothing. A 19
productive capacity for doing. 20
Once you learn to meditate, you realise 21
that boredom is simply a failure to pay 22
attention. If something as simple and 23
repetitive as breathing can become a 24
source of blissful contemplation, and it 25
can, and if the feeling of boredom itself 26
can become an object of intense 27
interest, and it can, there’s no way to be 28
bored, if you’re paying close attention to 29
your experience. So training in 30
meditation is the true cure for boredom. 31
It’s a kind of permanent inoculation. 32
Once you learn how to meditate, you 33
will never be truly bored again. Now, 34
this isn’t to say that you won’t still make 35
choices in life. Certain activities might 36
still feel like a waste of time, and they 37
might be a waste of time, given all the 38
other things you could do. So you might 39
still walk out of a movie or stop reading 40
a book because it’s, quote, ‘boring’, but 41
when left alone with yourself, how do 42
you feel? Are you desperate to be 43
distracted by some stimulus? Or can 44
you find a deep feeling of well-being as 45
an intrinsic property of just being 46
conscious? The gulf between these two 47
conditions is enormous and in my 48
experience only meditation allows us to 49
reliably span it. 50

mammaire. 4. Elle est passée sur le billard pour avoir réussi ses études, ce qui est

abdominoplastie quelques mois auparavant. 8. On avait conseillé à cet homme, dont le menton a été refait grâce à des injections
